Scout Report – Luka Milivojevic

After signing Jeffrey Schlupp and Patrick van Aanholt earlier in the transfer window, Crystal Palace completed their business with the capture of Serbian international midfielder Luka Milivojevic from Greek side Olympiakos for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth around £11 million.

Speaking to the club’s official website prior to the weekend loss at home to Sunderland, Palace boss Sam Allardyce provided an insight into how Milivojevic may fit into the Eagles midfield:

“He’s a defensive midfield player with great ability with both feet and is a really good passer. I’m not sure that Yohan and Punch’s roles are in that sitting position but this lad loves to play there and sees it has his main position. There’s no guarantee he’s going to jump straight into the Premier League and be fantastic – we hope he is – but I’m looking forward to working with him and getting him up to speed as quick as we can.”

The History

Milivojevic began his career at hometown club Radnički Kragujevac, making 17 appearances during the 2007/08 season, and scoring two goals, before moving to top-tier side FK Rad ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

Over the next few seasons, he made 54 appearances, scoring three goals, prior to joining Red Star Belgrade in December 2011.

He stayed with Red Star for around 18 months, registering seven goals and six assists in 47 matches, before moving to Anderlecht in July 2013.

Milivojevic never really settled in Belgium, though, managing just two assists in 25 matches, before joining Olympiakos initially on loan in September 2014.

The Serbian was a regular starter for the Greek side, and joined on a permanent basis in June 2015 for a fee of around €2.3 million.

Over the course of his two-and-a-half seasons in Greece, Milivojevic racked up 15 goals and seven assists from 94 appearances, and helped the club to two league titles.

Milivojevic represented Serbia at U19 and U21 levels before making his senior debut against Chile in November 2012.

He currently has 19 caps to his name, but has yet to open his account for his country.

The Prospects

Having missed the weekend loss as untangles red tape surrounding a working visa, there’s hope that Milivojevic could be available for Palace’s upcoming clash with Stoke.

Discussing the new boy after Saturday’s chastening defeat, Big Sam reckons that the Serbian’s screening presence in front of the back-four will be vital:

“I think Luka will bring a bit of stability into midfield, and we need that. Teams keep getting through our midfield far too easily and far too many times. I didn’t see that at Bournemouth, but I have seen it again. The second goal [from Didier Ndong] was a stunner, but the disappointing thing for me is the third and fourth goals we told the centre-halves, you can’t let Jermain Defoe run behind you. And what have they let him do, they’ve let him run in behind them.”

Clearly, then, Milivojevic should help fill what has been a troublesome position for Palace since the departure of Mile Jedinak to Aston Villa last year.

Both Joe Ledley and Mathieu Flamini have been tasked to sit in front of the back four, or as the holding midfielder in a double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1 formation, and have struggled to make an impression.

Fellow central midfielders Yohan Cabaye and James McArthur are far better going forward than they are in terms of their defensive contributions, so the addition of the tenacious Milivojevic should help provide greater protection in front of what has been a vulnerable Palace defence.

Palace have conceded 45 goals in the 24 matches they’ve played so far, with only three teams boasting a worse defensive record. Indeed, last Tuesday night’s 2-0 win at Bournemouth was just the second time this season they have registered a clean sheet.

While Milivojevic’s goal scoring is very reasonable for a defensive-minded midfield player, due mostly due his shooting prowess from distance and dead-ball abilities, it’s unlikely he himself will be a viable Fantasy asset.

He’ll be battling with the likes of Cabaye and Jason Puncheon for set-piece duties, and is probably unlikely to force himself to the front of the queue.

The 25-year-old’s qualities were neatly summed up by Allardyce, who said the Serbian was “a talented two-footed player with intelligent passing ability as well as being very strong defensively, in and out of possession.”

He’s been handed a price tag of 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but with team-mate Wilfried Zaha, who has registered four goals and eight assists so far this season, available at 5.5, it’s the latter who should provide us with the strongest option from the Palace midfield.

But if he can provide a formidable shield in front of the Eagles rearguard, then the appeal of Palace defenders could rise once again.

Scott Dann reminded us of his abilities with a third of the season against the Cherries, while Van Aanholt and Schlupp (if played out of position on the flank) could also be viable options for our five-man backlines.

Palace’s schedule (sto, MID, wba) remains kind in the short-term, while they face favourable home match-ups against Leicester City, Burnley and Hull City during the final month of the season.

So while it’s unlikely that Milivojevic will pop up on our radars, he could well provide greater balance to the Eagles midfield, and become a key component in Allardyce’s ongoing quest to shore up his troubled defence.

You need to sort that bench asap. How many FTs?

Something like Aguero, Evans, Amat to Kane, Coleman/Baines and Robertson will do the job

    Hi All,

    Thinking doing Alli/Mane >Hazard.
Minus 4 is it worth doing knowing Alli has Stoke next week and Mane has Leicester. Hazard has Burnley Swansea.

    What do you all think?

    Good morning all!

I've been having a bit of a think about the blanks and double game weeks, whether we should be looking to load up, take hits etc. I think Jonty touched on taking hits which can mostly be recouped on the last Scoutcast.

I'll preface this post with the fact everyone's teams and aims are different so this might not apply to everyone but I'm starting to think a good hit next week could be well worth it in the long run.

My team for example has 4 x Man United and Arsenal, as well as Amat who isn't playing and Crouch who has Spurs (a) in GW26 and Man City (a) in GW28 - not keen on playing him in either (some may say this is just bad planning but I can't worry about what's gone, just have to look ahead to how I can fix it).

I've already done Mirallas to Sigurdsson this week so next week I'm still going to be lumbered with the 6 I mentioned above.

Next week I'm looking at a -8 to take out Mkhitaryan, Jones and Amat. I'll go for those not blanking at all of course - West Ham midfielder most likely, Coleman and Maguire. Even if those 3 players get 2 points each I've only lost out on 2 points, but potentially I could earn back more than my 8 point spend, at the same time I have 3 extra players guaranteed to play in GW28 as well as having good fixtures anyway. Greenwindmill has pointed out that one of those transfers is free so technically it's a -8 for 2 players which is a little worse but still worth it I think.

I know there's talk of not wanting to load up on players for GW28 from bad teams but players like Maguire and Funes Mori already fit in with most team structures under 5m in defence and could be benched when we don't need them.

    Hull - (GW26) Burnley (h) - Leicester (a) - (GW28) Swansea (h) - Everton (a) - West Ham (h) - Boro (h)

    Everton - (GW26) Sunderland (h) - Spurs (a) - (GW28) WBA (h) - Hull (h)

With 5 spots in our squads and some good fixtures to come I really think we should look to defence to help us navigate the blanks. There's plenty of good options that will help us field 11 and fit in current team structures without filling our side with awful players and the hits we take in GW26 could be good long term moves when considering GW28 as well.

I'm looking at 5-4-1 in GW26 which means keeping Ibra and Sanchez, although that's partly because I have so many other problems to deal with.

        I like Ibra v Bournemouth (h) in GW27 though

        Yup that makes sense.

It's all well and good saying we should look at defence of those not blanking next week but FA Cup could change everything if some of the bigger teams get knocked out.

it's not out of the question.

Spurs might field a weakened side against Fulham (as they did in FA round 4) because of their fixture congestion with 2 Europe League games.

I'm actually looking at saving a transfer before 28 and just field 8 players. (The alternative is to bring in someone like Maguire)

Not very keen on investing heavily in the teams playing, and without a WC I think I'll be better off using the freebies preparing for the DGW's later on - which will include far better prospects than the ones in 28.

i prefer Robertson over Maguire because there are a few weeks when i will need the Hull defender to play for sure.
          Robertson is 100% nailed.

the last 2 PL games Hull played 4 at the back. Michael Dawson is in the picture again and Rannochia looked magnificent against Liverpool . . . with Maguire, that's 3 players for 2 spots, unless they go 3 at the back with wingbacks.

Roberston is nailed in either case . . . is Maguire?

i have a sneaking suspicion that Rannochia is their 90 minute man every game for the rest of the season.

but that is speculation since he's only played one game, and i have to make this decision this week most likely. hence, i think it's Robertson for me right now.

if i had more time, i'd like to see it the Italian's performance against Liverpool was one he can duplicate consistently . . . he had a great game.

Yeah makes sense, I was considering Robertson until I saw those stats yesterday, Maguire definitely the one to get in my opinion at .1 more. I'll most likely play 4 at the back in GW26 and bench Sanchez who is the only big hitter I have really been considering ditching until after the blanks.

Well in GW26 and GW28 for sure I'd say. Potentially against Leicester too.

The key to Maguire may well be to ignore his price and just keep checking the stats 🙂

I'll be honest and say I've not seen much of Hull so not sure how attacking he's been but the table I linked above looks v.good.

I think WC next week can set our teams nicely plus better idea of BGW28 plus we can make early move avoiding any price fluctuations plus save those 8/12pts... Dont think it would be a big deal to get players for DGW as we will already have players from those DGW teams. But thats just me, my words doesnt make sense most of the time 😛

I'm going with Coleman/Banies, Brunt, Siggy, Antonio and Lukaku as my main players who should do well regardless, then I'll just populate my bench with cheap none blankers. Don't want to make too drastic of a change for 1 GW that will probably end up being a low scoring affair considering the teams involved.

Defense is where the players can fit for the potential blanks, mainly as the attacking options are so poor from the teams we kno wplay

      Attacking ( mids and fwrds)-
Hull, no interest for me right now
      West Brom, Phillips
West Ham, Carroll and one of Snod/Antonio
      Everton, Lukaku
      Bournemouth, no real interest
      Swansea, Siggy

Add in a 1/2 West Brom defense, 1/2 EVE defense and if you want a Hull/ SWA defender and thats enough imo

The Everton and WBA defences look like the best options due to the fact they are good options regardless, the problem is they play each other. Don't know if I can watch the match hoping for a 0-0 with Lukaku in my team.

Hull's new defensive style is looking like it could be a good option now for sure.

I think you're on to something since other than Lukaku, there's no striker I would otherwise want who doesn't blank GW28 (assuming all PL teams go through).

I guess things will become clearer soon but 4 or 5 at the back looks the way to go. I need rid of Ake so I'll replace with a Hull defender.

Another thing I'm thinking about is with Spurs & United having the Europa League campaign start again, how keen am I on having too many of their players after they've played Thursday night. I can see Stoke possibly being a tight game at home for Spurs post-Europa.

it's the exit strategy after GW29 that I can't balance with putting out 11 players.
It maybe a help that 4 of the sides definitely in GW28 place each other in GW 29 - Everton v. Hull & Bournemouth v. Swansea.
I've had 3 WBA for a while but would really need to shift Foster & Phillips for GW29.
Personally I've got 7 already but that includes Holgate & Stanislas. Need to shift Cedric & P.Jones. So I can get in 11 if I need to without too much hits damage.
Posted earlier that looking at my mini-leagues many have only got 3 or 4 in place now. SO they are going to have to ride it out with short sides or take multiple hits.
I've got a good side for GW26 already so I think I am just going to wait it out, carry FTs and see what actually happens in the cup.
Hoping for an Arsenal game in GW28 as that means Sutton beat them and I'll hear less about how they beat my lot (Coventry City) in their last cup run 🙂

Other issue I can't quite sort out is there much of a pts ceiling with only 3 games even if you have 11 players.
If your keepers & defenders are going well then the chances are your mids & forwards aren't or vice-versa.

Wanted to slowly add Siggy and Lukaku to my team over the next 2 weeks but the goal explosion from Lukaku and the Siggy goal has forced me to take drastic action on Sunday. Too late now, but what do you all think? good moves?

OUT - Mkhitaryan, Defoe, and Lallana
IN - Lukaku, Siggy, and Antonio (-4)

    Leaves me with:

    Grant (Pickford)

Brunt | Alonso | Coleman (Nyom, Amat)

Sanchez | Alli | Siggy | Antonio (Meyler)

Probably okay for the long term but this week Defoe is playing a Southampton side without VVD.

Mkhitaryan has Watford (h) and after the performance against Leicester I'm hopeful for another return.

Lukaku also has a match away to Boro who are fairly tight in defence. I'm personally not expecting much from him, but it's easier that I already own him of course.

1 FT transfer, nothing in the bank. Stuck!
Starting 11 is fine, but got a couple of deadwood players. Don't want to take a hit, so..

    A) Friend >> Who?
    B) Stanislas >> Who?

Don't really expect points returns at that value, just need some fodder that actually plays and might retain value.

So basically it's come down to this, not making all the transfers this week but all of them will be in place by next week.

Which option do you prefer for the next 5-6 weeks?

    A) Alonso - Hazard - Kane - Llorente (-8)

    B) Alonso - Hazard - Kane - Defoe (-8) (But this means I will get Alonso next week instead of this week)

    C) Baines - Hazard - Costa - Defoe (-8)

    D) Baines - Hazard - Costa - Benteke (-4)

    Have Luiz & Coleman.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

I think Defoe wont outscore Benteke by 1 goal, thats why -4pts can be saved... Not much in it I guess, both are playing for poor teams, can go either way

Defoe has much better chance of scoring against a Van Dijk less Soton defence whereas Stoke at home is a tough team to break down specially for Palace.

Benteke to Defoe will be for free this week.

-8 will be to bring in Alonso, Hazard & Kane for Mee, Sanchez & Ibra next week.

769th. Was buzzing because I've had an awful season in general as well, just not been able to feel my way through it like I have in past years. This week took me from an overall rank of about 1.5million, to about 900k.

I'm not normally that high up, but I usually end up in the top 200k or so by the end of the season, not gonna happen this year. After the season I've had I'm happy with maybe a top 20% finish and beating as many of my mates as I can.
