The Digest – Gameweek 24

The case for Lukaku, Hull City’s Silva lining and the form vs fixtures battle over Jesus. These are the key topics that draw a close to Gameweek 24.

The Player

What is left to be said on Romelu Lukaku?

For all the hype surrounding Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus, there is no doubt that the Gameweek belonged to the Everton striker.

Second only to City’s Brazilian for transfers ahead of this weekend’s deadline, many of those punished by Lukaku’s 21-point haul have moved to correct matters.

As we’ve mentioned previously, while it’s tempting to dismiss his claims and avoid “chasing points”, the case for Lukaku appears strong, even if the Bournemouth haul is dismissed.

Now leading the Golden Boot chase, Lukaku has significantly improved both his shot accuracy and goal conversion this season.

Compared with his rivals at the top of the goal charts – Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Jermain Defoe – the Belgian is hitting the target more often, and converting more of his shots to goals.

He shows a 51% goal involvement at a time when Everton have top scored over the last six Gameweeks, ranking fourth for goal attempts over that spell.

Unlike the three teams above them in that pecking order, Everton have both a guaranteed Gameweek 26 and 28 fixture – home matches, against Sunderland and West Brom.

The argument for Lukaku appears bulletproof. To avoid him on the basis that he is unlikely to repeat Saturday’s haul is both stubborn and a decision which risks further anguish.

The Team

Marco Silva was an unknown quantity. While some notable pundits were lamenting Hull City’s decision to oust Mike Phelan and opt for a Premier League newcomer, the rest of us sat back, anticipating change but unsure on just how Silva could possibly navigate the Tigers away from the relegation trapdoor.

They appeared doomed on arrival of the Portuguese boss, but in his four league matches in charge, Silva has steered the Tigers to seven points – more than their total return over the 18 outings prior to his appointment.

Even the loss of key asset Robert Snodgrass has failed to disrupt the renaissance. Silva has moved to make seven January signings, backing up his tactical overhaul with a cast of new faces.

Everton outcast Oumar Niasse has already benefitted – his goal that sealed an unlikely 2-0 victory over Liverpool at the weekend his latest retaliatory blow.

Elsewhere, we will keenly monitor the progress of Liverpool loanee Lazar Markovic and Polish maverick winger Kamil Grosicki – they could be next to produce for Silva and tempt Fantasy investment.

But, like Silva, our focus is the defence.

Back-to-back clean sheets against Manchester United and Liverpool have forced our interest: over his four matches in charge, Silva’s influence on the Tigers’ rearguard has been remarkable.

Hull’s backline have reduced the number of attempts conceded from open play from 14.1 per match, to just 8.8.

Eldin Jakupovic is back installed as a favoured budget option in goal, with the news of Jordan Pickford’s imminent return for Sunderland failing to distract from the fact that the Swiss stopper has the price, form and fixtures to offer stronger returns over the coming weeks.

Similarly, Harry Maguire can be a rough diamond.

A towering colossus of a centre-back, the former Sheffield United defender is an attacking force. Adept with the ball at his feet, Maguire can threaten from both open play and set-pieces.

Since his run of starts began back in Gameweek 15, no other FPL defender has fired in more attempts – not even the buccaneering Marcos Alonso.

Maguire also tops Hull’s ranks for clearances, blocks and interceptions during that period – indication that, should further clean sheets arrive, bonus point returns will surely follow.

Hull City not only offer fixtures in both Gameweek 26 and 28, they arguably boast the kindest run-in of any Premier League side from this point on, with an array of home matches that can help Silva complete his improbable rescue act.

There are no longer doubts surrounding the merits of Silva’s appointment. Instead, Fantasy managers are now thankful that his arrival has promoted Hull as an unlikely option at a time when we’re scrambling to fill our squads with active assets.

The Talking Point

Those impending blanks have clearly impacted on the current transfer activity, with both the top owned assets currently among the top six most sold assets.

While Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexis Sanchez sit out Gameweek 26, early planning and preparation has driven some to part company, even with home fixtures against Watford and Hull City scheduled this weekend.

On the flipside, such concerns appear to have been ignored by those flooding to Gabriel Jesus. The City striker again seems destined to be the top transfer target for a second successive Gameweek.

His fixture at Bournemouth undoubtedly tempts investment, although more than 14,000 of his 126,000 new owners have made the direct switch from Ibrahimovic: from one Gameweek 26 blank to another, with the risk of rotation around Champions League ties about to kick in.

As we attempt to form the optimum plan for navigating our squads through testing schedules, such behaviour seems puzzling.

Following Gameweek 26, once the FA Cup fifth round is played out, we will at least handed greater clarity on the big picture.

We will know if any unexpected exits for Premier League clubs will hand us new options, perhaps helping us revise and finesse plans.

Until then, it’s perhaps wise to show caution – preserving transfers for assets assured of starts.

Jesus is an anomaly – an exciting, potentially explosive prospect who looks set to be a key figure through the remainder of our season.

It appears that his time is now, but City’s fixtures and Pep’s penchant for the unexpected perhaps tells us otherwise.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Surely no one thinks a player blanks because of their personal moves? It is a trend being confirmed by their personal history with a player. Imo sig is a consistent choice, as his overall points tally demonstrates

I'd like to agree. It's when managers think there's a trend based on one incident... then that's irrational in my opinion... if the player has a history of underperforming given certain conditions then that's fine 🙂

Sanchez to Hazard or Antonio/Snodgrass before GW26?

Hazard will prob have the 28 blank but will he score more than Antonio / Snodgrass in 26/27?
Going Antonio / Snodgrass frees up cash but puts the team out of balance and harder to sort out midfield in GW29.

    Thoughts?

If there are a lot of teams involved in a DGW does that mean people don't need to wildcard the week before as you will by default have hefty coverage and careful planning will yield commensurate results?

Therefore, if there are two double game weeks and one has fewer teams doubling, is that the one to target with a wildcard especially if it's late like GW37 and you're not wrecking your team ?

Build for DGW34 and (TC), then wildcard GW36 ready for bench boost DGW37 seems to be the favoured tactic. I did it the other way around last year and think it was a mistake in hindsight.

There can't be a fixed tactic becsuse football does not work like that. We can't know the state of 37 now - maybe several top teams will have nothing to play for and the dgw will not have the guaranteed gains assumed by many. Keep the wc to near the doubles unless you need it now. I played mine early and have gone up 260,000 places since. It all depends on your team- do not get caught up in singular narratives.

      Every year is different though.

This season we are going to have Utd and City players on both DGWS.

Depending on how hard you are going in on 28 then your team will be better off wildcarded early rather than late.

My team was a disaster for the last 3 weeks, from 2nd on my ML to 6th. I am on wildcard, what do you think?

    Grant
Alonso - David Luiz - Walker - Coleman
    Siggy - Sanchez - Eriksen
    Jesus - Lukaku - Carroll

    Subs- Jaku - Nyom - Snodgrass - N'Diaye

Plan: Jesus to Costa, then play 8 players for GW28. Ideas?

Defence very strong but in need of surgery first gw28

I would prefer the below for the time being.

      Alonso Brunt Coleman Mckauley

      ( 3available gw 28)

If you really want a goodie then Valencia worth a shout. Cheaper than Walker whose attacking potential effected by Rose and Vertonghen absenteeism.

I like your midfield 3 players gw 28.

Caroll would be my biggest concert here. He looks 1/2 min away from an injury all the time. Even now, is he injured or not, no one really knows. If not not far away from one.

You could consider a punt on a hull forward if trying to go easy on the funds. No time like the present.

Lukaku Jesus for now with swap to Costa seems nice too.

Your choice at the end of the day.

Anyone considering Sanchez to Barkley next week as opposed to Hazard to help set up for GW28? Barkley also has a decent fixure on 26 and I think I'd rather captain Lukaku over Hazard that week anyway.

On another note, I want to wait until the FA cup fixtures are over before making a transfer to see how things look for 28 but Sanchez price will plummet and may drop .3 by the time they come around where as potential replacements will go up, that's quite a swing in TV to consider. Anyone else concerned about rapid price changes ?

Thats one of the reason I want to play WC next week... 😮 Already have low TV and with likes of Sanchez, Ibra dropping in price coupled with potential Alonso, Costa, Luka, Hazard, Snodgrass rise, I probably wont be able to afford my desired team.

If you need cash, Barkley is a decent pick.

If you want sanchez back though, do you not also need to consider the effect of losing 2 transfers and the lack of movement allowed elsewhere? Or even hits caused by using extra transfers? You could just hold him and move out less important players

Good point and I've considered this. I could bench Sanchez and field a 4-4-2 replacing Amat with Maguire instead. If he got that goal he has been threatening and a clean sheet happy days but having an extra midfielder that week whose points ceiling is higher (such as Barkley) could work out well, particulary as he plays in 28 too. Sanchez could come straight back after the blanks are over as cash wont be dispersed elsewhere, even if it means a hit to get Sanchez back, the extra points earned (hopefully) through having another midfielder during the blanks as opposed to a defender could well make it worth while.

I am fearing that and I will move early and get rid of sanchez too for that reason.

Considering it but don't really want triple Everton at White Hart Lane in GW27. Haz has a much more appealing trip to West Ham that week.

I'm going to make my move before the FA Cup fixtures are over. If I'm losing Sanchez I want to bank some of the profit I made.

West Ham have been pretty terrible at their new stadium though and Hazard has produced returns in his last two away games.

The fact that Arsenal are playing Sutton is exactly why I feel okay making the move early. No chance they lose that. If anything, the player I'm bringing in (Hazard) has a much better chance of featuring in GW28.

    I can field this team:
    Foster
    Baines, Alonso, Coleman
    Davies, Philips, Siggy, Sanchez
    Defoe, Kane, Ibra
    Bench: Pickford, Stanislas, Love, Jones
    3.7m itb but no FT.

Is it worth any hits to improve the following:
    Stanislas > King
Ibra/Kane or Defoe > Lukaku (with a second transfer needed to ditch Davies to give me the Everton spot)
Jones > someone given likely blanks in GW26 & 28 and fact he's unlikely to play this weekend either.

Scoutcast last night discussing the whole Leicester form and confidence in Ranieri thing. Missing the same thing that almost all pundits have overlooked: Leicester's form in the CL. When Leicester want to play (CL) they're far better than when they don't want to play (PL). Most of those players will never play in the Champions League again. It's a bigger competition and a bigger shop window than the league. They don't want to get injured. Simple as that, they're not trying. This may be causing a division between team and manager, but it's the CL at the root of it. When they're out their form will pick up. If they go far they'll go down because every team team in the league will knowthey can outfight them. I dare say Derby will beat them tonight unless Leicester play a second string

I think that is a bit of a simplistic reading no, rather than being as 'simple as that'? There are plenty of teams across previous seasons and across leagues with clear disjunctures in European and domestic form. It is not merely a case of worrying about injuries. It is about the quality of the team's player, the confidence in respective competitions etc etc. Wigan won the FA Cup and went down. I saw my Everton pull off superb results in Europe, including two unlikely wins against a flying Wolfsburg and continue to play badly even after we were eventually eliminated by Kiev. Leicester are playing without confidence, and their defence is denying them in a way it wasnt last season. That was also clear in their final UCL game, and when Leicester play a top team in the UCL they will go out.

That final UCL game was dead rubber and didn't really tell us anything about Leicester.

Leicester are not just lacking confidence out of nowhere. They're lacking any inclination to fight for games. You might say they have no confidence in each other as a result of this and as soon as they go a goal down they completely give up

If anything, their attitude suggests they have complete confidence they can just pick up their form when they absolutely have to

I have no idea how you can say that their attitude suggests they have complete confidence? And you've not addressed have other comparable disjunctures between league and European form demonstrated by teams like Everton? Do you think merely that all these teams have players trying to put themselves in the shop window? or is the situation not more complex, as it invariably is? And what is a more effective shop window - an EPL game against United, or a UCL game against Copenhagen? I cant understand your logic.

The lack of confidence is obvious, and is apparent in the displays. Tight results against Copenhagen and wins against Brugge do not demonstrate what you are saying. Surely you can see the massive difference between their quality, and the quality of the better EPL teams? They beat Porto at home, but were very fortunate, and this Porto is their worse manifestation in a long while. Leicester's thrashing away from home illustrated the clear lack of depth in their squad, which is preventing them from changing things up currently.

Here is my prediction: They will lose comfortably to Seville because 1) of a lack of ability 2) a lack of confidence that will not be limited to EPL football. It will be like Everton against Kiev: We had vulnerabilities, also apparent in European competition, that were inevitably going to be exposed.

"I have no idea how you can say that their attitude suggests they have complete confidence?"

I didn't. You said that. I said: Leicester are not just lacking confidence out of nowhere. They're lacking any inclination to fight for games. You might say they have no confidence in each other as a result of this

"And what is a more effective shop window - an EPL game against United, or a UCL game against Copenhagen?"

They're now in the last 16. That's a bigger shop window and a competition most of these players will never again play in

"And you've not addressed have other comparable disjunctures between league and European form demonstrated by teams like Everton?"

Why should I. They don't demonstrate in any way that Leicester haven't downed tools in the league

"Surely you can see the massive difference between their quality, and the quality of the better EPL teams?"

I can. It's not sufficient to explain why they have 21 points instead of the 30-40 they should reasonably be expected to have.

"Here is my prediction: They will lose comfortably to Seville because 1) of a lack of ability 2) a lack of confidence that will not be limited to EPL football."

            1. Agreed
            2. Completely disagree. They were playing poorly in the league and absolutely walked their group

            Time will tell.

I forgot it was Sevilla. They are out then. To be honest, the extent of Leicester's collapse might be surprising, but not the collapse itself. Simpson, Huth, Morgan and Fuchs are hardly inspiring, even if they over-reached last season. The defence is weak, and whilst Vardy, Drinkwater, Slimani and Mahrez have talent, they are not of the quality of many of the top 4 teams and Vardy and Mahrez are confidence players. I expect them to escape though, but they need to find that big result from somewhere.

No, you don't go from winning a title to being 'not very good' and getting relegated, despite losing a very important player.

I don't know how you can imagine that simply 1 year on and one important player down they get from Champions to 'not very good'. It's like excusing Chelsea last year or United the year after Ferguson left as simply being past-it in some way.

        1. I Member

Leicester winning the title was a massive accomplishment and they deserve all the credit in the world for it but it was an incredible over-achievement by a group of players who are simply not even comparable to the Chelsea and United squads you just mentioned. And let's be honest, in terms of quality last season was one of the worst in Premier League history. Not a single one of the big sides performed except for Spurs.

Leicester were one dimensional in their way of playing and somehow it worked all season. Teams have figured out how to stop Vardy and Mahrez, and that defensive solidity they had last season is gone. This regression was inevitable but I didn't expect it to be as spectacularly drastic as it has been.

Teams have not 'figured it out', Mahrez had downed tools. His recent performances have been as disgraceful as last year's were sublime.

I've not claimed they would ever win the league again or even finish particularly high, but their abject performances this year are about priorities and they simply do not care about the the PL.

I can see how it would be easy to mistake that decision for a lack in confidence. People did it last year with Chelsea when in reality the players priority was forcing a managerial change

How do the examples of Chelsea and United apply to what you are saying? You've used the UCL as a reason for Leicester's poor form, which does not apply to Chelsea and United. Although many of United's players were past it, as every season that has followed is demonstrated. They needed, and still need to a degree, extensive restructuring after Ferguson papered over the cracks in the final season on the back of the confidence and belief he so wonderfully instilled.

Leicester over-reached last season. Incredibly. Just as Everton did when they managed fourth at a time when the league was a lot less equal, and the better teams less vulnerable. Everton fell away afterwards. European leagues given similar examples of smaller clubs pulling off incredible feats on the back of form and confidence. Greece did it in the Euros too. But it does not continue because confidence and form change, because the successful clubs become targets, and because successful strategies are negated by teams who perceive weaknesses across time. The strike rate of Vardy, and the performances of Mahrez, could not continue. They will lose to Seville, and they will continue to struggle in the epl, although I think they will escape because they are better than relegation. They are a mid-table side playing below par because the confidence and belief has been diminished and the pressure has got to them.
