The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 29

Alexis Sanchez is taking his turn as the latest heavy-hitter to cause us consternation.

Brought in by more than 91,000 Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of today’s trip to West Brom, the Chilean produced a typically superb goal for the Gunners that, ultimately, was to prove a mere consolation.

Interrupted by recent postponements, his first half strike in the 3-1 defeat means that Sanchez has now provided a goal or an assist in eight of his last nine Gameweeks – a record that ensures he remains the top scoring FPL asset.

An inevitable transfer target with Arsenal due to play another 11 matches over the remaining nine Gameweeks, today nonetheless provided further food for thought for those holding or considering a Sanchez acquisition.

His performance at The Hawthorns started so brightly – the goal punctuating a superb opening period of the game for Sanchez, full of endeavour and neat flicks.

If there were any concerns surrounding his performance levels dipping as a result of recent speculation surrounding his future at the club, they were dispelled in those opening 30 minutes

Then came the clattering challenge from West Brom’s James McClean, a tackle that delivered a blow to the ankle that perhaps should have seen Sanchez immediately withdrawn.

Instead, he played on until half-time to emerged for the second period.

Unable to impact on proceedings as the match slipped away from Arsenal, Sanchez was clearly affected by the injury, eventually giving way on 78 minutes.

A forlorn Arsene Wenger gave a brief verdict on the injury post-match, simply stating that Sanchez’ ankle “doesn’t look good”, later describing it as in “a terrible state”.

Due to depart with Chile for two World Cup qualifiers, including a vital clash with Argentina, we surely won’t have long to wait until we have a fuller prognosis, with Wenger insisting that if there is ligament damage, he will not travel.

But as we know, Sanchez is a player who refuses to bow to injuries. A factor behind his second-half appearance, his desire to play through pain will also doubtless govern the decision to depart to Chile.

Wenger and his Fantasy owners will then face a nervous wait for Sanchez’ return ahead of a Gameweek 30 clash with Manchester City.

But, there are also further concerns surrounding Arsenal’s form and confidence. On today’s evidence, Sanchez will need to carry Arsenal to victories over their remaining matches.

While this would seemingly guarantee him appearances, if fit, over the remaining 11 matches, we perhaps have to question whether his points output can be maintained.

With Sanchez subdued, the Gunners faded badly in the second period, created little and mustered just two efforts on target all match.

Even Sanchez, for all his incredible talent as a player and Fantasy asset, may struggle to go on producing in an Arsenal side so bereft of confidence and creativity.

Wenger’s press conference comments, promising an imminent end to the speculation surrounding his future of the club may now be key to a revival.

That will no doubt be the focus for the media over the international break, leaving us to monitor Sanchez’s fitness and assess whether the alarming Arsenal malaise can be lifted so that the season’s ultimate heavy-hitter can truly shine and deliver.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Folks, early thoughts on transfers?

    Heaton / Valdes
    Alonso / Walker / Coleman / Brunt / Olsson
    Sanchez / Mane / Sigurdsson / Son / Lanzini
    Lukaku / Llorente / Barnes

    1 FT, 5.7m ITB.

Thinking of a swap to Gabbiadini and/or Vardy.

Judging by your posts, I just think you are worrying too much whom he brings in. He's obviously doing very well, but I feel he's been a bit rash in the number of hits he's taken under the guise of being aggressive. It's working out well for him right now and so there's not much you can do. But may be you go uber-conservative (no hits) and hope to capitalize on the 8 point/12 point head starts he seems intent on giving you weekly?

I can't control who he brings in. He really wanted Sanchez so took the extra hit and cleaned up FM and his Pool mids. At least the DGWs give more chances to find differentials. Might even WC earlier than him if I can find a good plan. My team needs to change a bit so a hit weekly isn't the worst thing. Llorente has hurt me a lot, even Carroll scored an assist on his bench.
Pool play B'mouth in a few weeks so that could help.

Yes and no. Way too early for that really. Even a personal best may not be enough to beat him so I may as well do the best I can. He is winning in the differentials atm so need to strengthen the weak spots. He has certainly had some luck this season. My luck was the Mawson goal last GW and benching Mawson this week.

He brought in FM for a hit and got him out for another hit. Same I assume with Coutinho. So, there's plenty of mistakes being made too and points being wasted. Gets easy to focus on everything he's doing right, like you mentioned with the Carroll assist. Just saying, if he brought in Sanchez, you could have risked not getting him in for a hit yourself and banking the 8 points he gave you up front. Kinda think, you being reactive with hits yourself, gives him the freedom to take more. May be if you don't react with hits yourself, he starts thinking twice about points he's giving up, which could throw him off his uber-aggressive streak. But, he's doing very well regardless and you can't really complain too much if you're trailing someone in the top 1K. That's just a very good season.

Fair enough, 2 weeks until the next battle. Hopefully today isn't too painful.
I even sold Brunt over FM and Holebas. Looks pretty bad in hindsight now.

Llorente has definitely been a problem for me too.

How about bringing in Alli for a slightly more explosive Spurs option that Mark doesn't have?

Yeah he's a bit manic- he convinced one poor boy to bench boost in the first gameweek!

Look at it this way. In the doubles, you can have 15 players playing twice. That's 30 players x 90 mins to score points and 6pts max bonus etc (as an upper limit). Compared to 15 x 90 on a normal game week with 3pts max bonus.

Big teams will have DGWs then and you watch those without wild cards trying to scramble Ibra, Agüero, Sanchez and other costly guys in without hitting themselves into the ground.

What are people's strategies for the GW34 blanks? It's a rubbish set of teams again except for United (de Gea, Valencia and/or Ibra) and Liverpool (any of the midfield 3).

If Walker drops by 0.1, I can bring in him or Valencia for Baines if I downgrade McAuley to Yoshida plus bring in Ibra for Defoe and Gabbi for Llorente. Question is, who would you prefer out of Walker and Valencia?

Get both... but if you have to choose... Valencia because Spurs have many options available to fill up your three (Eriksen Alli Son Rose soon and maybe Kane in a month)

Can't afford both without downgrading another midfielder or not getting Gabbi. I'd like to. Sound logic about Valencia. Cheers.

First and foremost you should wait two weeks. The most important question is who do you plan to captain currently and who would you like to captain?

Yes most definitely waiting out until next deadline as funds not an issue..honestly i do not really have a captaincy option from the current lot..siggy probably being the closest..heart says vardy and C..but being just inside 10k i'm fearing costa C from the masses and at almost 40% ownership to not even own him could be quite damaging..i wished i had enough to do both for a hit..

I would struggle to go without Costa next week but then again I'm quite the dullard... I'd want to captain Hazard at least though

Hazard C was the initial plan..and would have made it an easier decision to get vardy ahead of costa..but removed him for sanchez -4 near the deadline after reading posts that he was ruled out..looks like (C)osta is the sensible play..

According to the Mirror, Southgate to make Kane captain. This is a sad state of affairs for English football when a 23 year old is to be made captain. That said, who else is there?

Yeah I don't like keepers as captains. The only international team with a keeper as a captain that I can think of is France. IMO a captain should ideally be a central defender or DM so they can see the whole game in front of them but also get about the pitch a bit.

Shouldn't really take an armband to prove you are a leader though should it?

In a way keepers are ok. They are used to bossing their defence and can see the whole pitch from where they are

Why is that sad? The guy is a colossus when in form and surely that'll rub off on his teammates. It just needs him to strike red hot form during an international tourney and there'll be confidence flowing through the entire team. Look at Spurs with Kane.

Because only at school is the best player made captain. Aguero is never captain for City and he is the best striker in the league. He seems like a nice bloke and he is clearly our best striker but hardly an inspiring leader, as you'd expect at just 23 years old.

I am inclined to agree. There is a lack of metal and leadership about this England team it needs leaders all around the pitch to take control of the game and there is a lack at present. They are what allow the boys with the skills to do their thing.

I think lack of leadership has been a problem for a real time. We used to have some good ones and they weren't that long ago. What happened to the JT's, Rios, Gerrards, Campbells. They could all boss it

Becks was the only captain from the more skillful type I recall. Admittedly I did like him as a captain he led by example right enough

This^. If we had a Terry in defence, a Gerrard in centre mid and kept Hart in net then we would have experience and/or leadership through the spine of the team meaning your Sterlings and Kanes could just concentrate on getting a haul of goals every game.

Probably should figure out a way to get Milner to come out of retirement and be the captain. The question would then be where to put him in the lineup, and at whose expense

Yup. Also said this above too. For me, I'd play him as a CM in a 433. He can defend and score and he has a motor on him - best box to box we have IMO
                ............Hart
                Walker X X Rose
                ...........Dier
                .....Milner Alli
                Antonio..........Sterling
                .............Kane

Really can't decide on central defenders. Jones? Stones? Cahill? Terrible.

          Messi is captain of Argentina
          Ronaldo is captain of Portugal
          James is captain of Colombia
Neymar was captain of Brazil (bad results)

teams make their best player the captain fairly frequently

Messi and Ronaldo are the two best players in the world and they are the best because they are unbelievably driven. It makes sense for them to be captain of their respective teams. Ronaldo, like him or not (and I don't), is one of the most driven players I have ever seen. When he was injured in the Portugal game for the Euros and he still came out and was running up and down the pitch motivating his team.

I know I know, just pointing out teams do make their best player the captain 🙂
Argentina is a good example though because no disrespect to Messi, but Mascherano seems to be more of a natural leader personality. Messi seems to be just forced into that role by virtue of being the best player

Argentina have, on paper (IMO), the best team in the world. I agree Mascherano may be better but I doubt it because of leadership, for me it is his position. As mentioned above I think DMs are perfect candidates (depending on personality) to be captains. Messi's influence in the changing room will be immense. He carries the team when they're not doing well (World Cup, Copa America) and his team mates will love and respect him for that.

Neymar got bad results, as you say, Silva should have been the captain but Neymar is a prima donna (I lived in Brazil at the time of the World Cup too). Colombia usually have Falcao as captain but he was injured and the other players are quite young still.

The fact that he was made captain and how you utterly mock it, shows how overrated a football captain is in the first place. If it were that important, they'd not be playing musical chairs with the armband. Also, you are just assuming that a great defensive mid/ centre back is automatically the best captain choice. The defense plays as one, when it comes to offsides etc and so they have to be on the same page and yes, a leader in defense is essential to shepherd the entire back line. Now, thinking that a defender will inspire a striker is as equally debatable as if I make the claim that an in-form striker inspires the entire team.

A good striker doesn't (or at least shouldn't) need inspiring as they should already be hungry to score goals. They're not playing musical chairs with the arm band either. Hodgson had his favourite, Rooney, and now there is a new manager with a new set of circumstances surrounding Rooney i.e. he doesn't play for his club anymore and he captained 2 out of 3 abject tournaments. Every manager will have their own captain. Sven had Beckham etc.

I think the captain is important if you have a team with very few leaders. If you have a team with strong leadership, England in 96 for example, then I think it is less important.

I am not mocking Kane for being captain, I just think it is an odd choice and reflects where the England team are overall.

A young captain is not necessarily a bad thing in of itself. Kane seems to be quite level-headed, mature, and Poch trusts Kane with the armband when Lloris isn't playing. He doesn't have a Neymar-esque temperament

      1. The Big Fella
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

Yeah but Spurs are a young side and they seem to have the same problem as England do in that there are no natural leaders so obviously it will go Lloris. Arsenal is suffering from that this year too. The rest of the team in cruise control cashing in 100k a week with Sanchez being the only one who drives the team forwards.

    1. who is the best replacement option for baines ??
    a. valencia
    b. bertrand

    2. Don't u think gabbiadini is pretty much overrated for the double gws since southampton has too many forwards in their team and now austin is getting ready for the comeback, his gametime might be curtailed

    3. who is the best replacement for coutinho ??
    a. ayew
    b. tadic

Depends on your squad. My ideal back 3 moving forward would be Alonso, Valencia and Walker.

Gabbiadini might regress in terms of goals/FPL points but whilst he keeps scoring he will start upfront and play a lot of minutes.

Again depends on your squad - your priorities are spurs and a Chelsea mid, but I do like Tadic as a differential option.

All depends on how the Liverpool mids go but I'd give you a fair chance

Having just gone from 50k to 70k (san(c)hez over Lukaku skipper), I hope Alli and Sterling (along with Kun and Gabbiadini) help us swap back 😉

Any returns has to be a positive. The only bad captain is a blank captain (or those two times this season that Kun returned negative points)
