Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope

The lull in domestic proceedings affords us time to check in with the latest batch of miscreants on the Suspension Tightrope, with a number of players still very much at risk of a ban.

As highlighted by the FA website, anyone who reaches ten yellows by the second Sunday of April (inclusive) will be subject to a two-match suspension.

With Gameweeks in each of the upcoming two weekends, in addition to a full set of matches next midweek, we essentially still have three lots of league fixtures to navigate.

The only sides that this does not apply to are Crystal Palace and Arsenal, who face off in the final fixture of Gameweek 32, which takes place on Monday April 10 – ie, one day after the cut-off date.

As evidenced by the lengthy list in your sidebar on the right of the site, three players are just one caution shy of reaching the ten-card mark – Joe Allen, Craig Dawson and Mark Noble.

Sitting in 10% of Fantasy Premier League squads, the Potters’ midfielder is the most popular of that trio – he still has to steer past clashes with Leicester City, Burnley and Liverpool to avoid a place on the naughty step.

Dawson has been drafted in by over 11,000 on the back of two goals against Arsenal last time out but must avoid falling foul of the referee’s wrath against Man United, Watford and Southampton.

Noble missed the Gameweek 29 loss to Leicester through injury, though has since returned to training. Nonetheless, with Pedro Obiang ruled out for the season, it remains to be seen whether Slaven Bilic will immediately rush his captain back for encounters with Hull City, Arsenal and Swansea City.

A further 19 players sit on eight yellows.

For those Fantasy managers eyeing up double Gameweek 34, this also includes Palace’s Jason Puncheon, United’s Paul Pogba and Middlesbrough trio Martin de Roon, Adam Clayton and Gaston Ramirez, who all play twice in that round of fixtures.

If any of that quartet were to earn their tenth booking in Gameweek 32, for example, they would trigger a two-match suspension and therefore miss their respective sides’ first match of double Gameweek 34.

Although Pogba is still struggling through injury, those considering the likes of Puncheon or Ramirez as cheap midfield options will have to keep a keen eye on their discipline.

Twenty players currently boast seven yellow cards apiece.

Among the big names here are Chelsea pair Diego Costa and Pedro, who are still at risk should they pick up a caution in each of the next three (CPL, MCI, bou).

While that feat is more than achievable by Costa, in particular, his 39% ownership will be somewhat soothed by one booking in his last nine league outings, while the 10%-owned Pedro has gone eight league outings without collecting a caution.

In saying that, it’s still worth noting that should either player contrive to somehow earn themselves a suspension in such fashion, they would only miss one league match (against Man United in Gameweek 33) as their FA Cup semi-final clash with Spurs takes place prior to a Gameweek 34 derby with Man City.

The same scenario applies to the 13%-owned Raheem Sterling.

Should the City wide man be booked in the next three league fixtures against Arsenal, Chelsea and Hull to resultantly trigger a two-match ban, he’d still be available for the Gameweek 34 derby against United as he would instead miss the Gameweek 33 match with Southampton and ensuing FA Cup semi-final with Arsenal.

United’s Antonio Valencia – the most transferred in player for the Gameweek – is also on seven yellows.

Now up to 14% ownership, the Ecuadorian could conceivably still miss the first match of double Gameweek 34 if he’s booked in the next three league matches (WBA, EVE, sun).

Ironically, Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who is also on seven cautions – will avoid toppling off the tightrope due to the fact that he is currently suspended.

The United forward serves the last of a three-match ban in the Gameweek 30 encounter against West Brom, meaning he can only accumulate two further bookings, in Gameweeks 31 and 32, and move onto nine cautions at most before the cut-off date is extended.

Hull’s Tom Huddlestone, meanwhile, will remain on seven cautions until the cut-off date passes as he will sit out the next three matches due to suspension after being sent off in the Gameweek 29 loss at Everton.

As mentioned, Palace will only play twice before the April 9 cut-off date, so both Yohan Cabaye and Damien Delaney are safe on seven yellows apiece ahead of their double Gameweek 34.

One player not yet mentioned – Watford’s Jose Holebas – remains way out in front for total bookings earned. The wing-back sits on 12 cautions for the season, just three short of the 15 required before he would suffer a three-match ban. No player has ever earned 15 bookings in a single Premier League season; Watford’s reluctance to break that record may well explain why the Greek defender was benched at Crystal Palace in Gameweek 29.

    Jaku (Henn)
Alonso Walker Maguire (Funes Mori, Nyom)
    Mane Coutinho Eriksen Sterling (T.Carroll)
    Kun Lukaku Llorente

    2FT £2.8m

    A) Funes Mori > Yoshida and save FT (frees up cash for Ibra and Sanchez next week)
    B) Sterling + Kun > Sanchez + Vardy (next week Llorente + Sterling > Ibra + JWP, which means playing JWP more than I'd like until I wildcard)

Lol, Mark talks about Toby on the Scoutcast and now the Toby posts begin. Reminds me so much of the Coutinho wagon for GW28. Almost like everyone watched the Scoutcast, woke up the next morning and agreed that Coutinho is the new Sanchez.

It's really down to whether you think he overperformed last year, or has underperformed this year (so far), as his stats are still pretty similar in terms of goal threat

Not saying he's a bad pick, but the sudden posts recommending/asking about Toby is funny. Quite obvious where it's coming from.

Literally no one was talking about him before the Scoutcast.

Yup. Happened in GW28 too. No one wanted Andy Carroll until Mark talked him up.

Yeah, there weren't that many striker options for GW28 though. Lukaku, Llorente and Carroll. Coutinho was the standout since there were quite a few midfield options in Mane, Firmino, Antonio, Lanzini, Barkley, Siggy, King etc.

I only remember the Carroll one because I wanted to get him (and did) and pretty much everyone on here told me no. Then Mark mentioned getting him on the Scoutcast and everything changed. Carroll went from being a firm no on here to being a very popular pick.

    Kane - injured
    Replaced by Gabbiadini - injured
    Coleman and RFM - injured

Not been a good few weeks for my boys. More importantly, is there any news on Gabbiadini? I saw that Saints tweeted a video of him, Tadic and Redmond doing some bits for a Sure advert, but it involved running and shooting - what are the chances that this is recent and wasn't filmed a fortnight ago?

It possible, but thinking about it...

He'd been at Southampton for fewer than seven weeks when he was injured. He would have needed to have scored some goals before Sure wanted him in their advert. Realistically, it could only have been filmed between the EFL cup final and the injury; or after the injury.

    Double gameweeks:

Does anyone know when the other doubles are likely to be scheduled for?

Some teams have 2 doubles to still be rescheduled, Southampton and Arsenal...

How do we know al the doubles will be in week 37 not earlier?

      37 is a non-Euro midweek so a natural slot for DGW's.

    3. Football Weekender
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

All of the remaining double gameweeks will be in GW37, with the exception of Southampton vs Arsenal, which will be in GW35/36.

We know this as after GW34, GW37 is the only midweek which doesn't contain Champions' League fixtures. The Premier League avoids rescheduling games to clash with CL fixtures unless absolutely necessary.

      1. I Member

I understand this but couldn't the fact that they have no chance but to reschedule Southampton vs Arsenal in 35/36 change this? They're already rescheduling in a European week, with that being the case would it make much of a difference to them if they put another game or two there?

        1. Football Weekender
          • 7 Years
          7 years, 1 month ago

People who have done way more research into this than you or I seem very certain that they'll all be played in GW37 apart from Saints vs Arsenal. That's good enough for me.

            • 13 Years

True. If this was the case though the could have fixed the dates for these already. Why do hey need to wait until 7th April to reschedule?

            1. Football Weekender

I don't think rescheduling a game is a simple as picking a date and announcing it. Think of all the logistics involved in a match day - staff, policing, ticketing, accessibility, local authorities etc. Once everything is confirmed they can then announce it.

Doesn't this post suggest that it's not quite as simple as throwing all of them in GW37? The logistics could mean it's easier for a game or two to be played in 35/36. I'm not saying this will happen, it probably won't, it just seems a bit premature to say all of the games will be rescheduled in 37 apart from Sot-Ars.

I'm happy to go with what the DGW boffins have told us mate and it seems pretty cut and dry to me but if you're unsure then I guess hold off any transfer plans which maybe affected until the announcement on 7th April.

I can't decide with my Coleman replacement.

Valencia - wasn't rotated lately but with all those games played in short time plus a lot of games in April makes me think that he may be benched soon. Maybe not next game as there is a lot of injuries in ManU (less chance for CS too) but soon imo. Up side is that he is very attacking but his last points were lucky.
Walker - good fixtures and strong team. More expensive than Vertronghen but more attacking. I think that Spurs fixtures are better than ManU even that MU has DGW.
Bertrand - much worse pick than the previous two when looking at the fixtures. He has nice form so mayby some assist but don't count on many CS

I think that Rose would be the best pick but he is still out.
I want Spurs def defo so Walker may be the best choice as I think that he will outscore Valencia.

Walker is a better bet than Toby in the current 3-4-2-1. Plus our set pieces are even worse than usual at the moment, so Toby isn't getting many chances at corners.

    Hi, please rate my team:
Jaku, Alonso, Walker, Valencia Alexis (c), Mane, Alli, Siggy
    Costa, Lukaku, Gabbi
    (Heaton, Baines, T Carroll, Wasilewski)

This week I play H2H with this team:
De Gea, Monreal, Bellerin, Cahill, Kingsley
    Sanchez (c), Firmino, Milner, Capoue
    Costa, Rondon
    (Schmeichel, Allen, Stuani, Verthongen)

    I'm consider to replace:
    - Gabbi with Vardy
    - Mane with Tadic
It will cost me -8 pts, but I think it will my team stronger for next week and Gabbi won't play (but I don't want to lose this week either)

    Hold or execute transfer?

BUT shifting Gabbi for Vardy for 2 weeks might just pay off...I actually think it was the Scoutcast that has led me to this thinking...and also chasing...

I need help. On WC and have problem with 4th def long term.
    Currently have:
Alonso (to become best, in-form, nailed Boro defender pretty soon)
    Walker
    Valencia
    X
    Holgate

    The choice is between:
    A. Kaboul/Proedl/Holebas (great fixtures but poor defensive performance)
    B. Roberston (decent fix, cry in gw37, but no DGW)
    C. Yoshida (worst fixtures of them all, but under threat of Caceres and VVD when fit for 2DGW's)
    D. Other to 4.6 option

Please let me know what think and why.
    Thanks.

Have a butchers at this... Do you reckon it's worth ditching Mane for Alexis after these round of games are over?

Ideally i would ditch Coutinho but short on funds.

    Foster - Pickford
    Alonso - Baines - Valencia - PvA - Robertson
MANE - Coutinho - Dele - Siggy - De Roon
    Lukaku - Costa - Carroll

Downgrade Costa for Gabbi/Deeney/Defoe and then rid Cout - bob's your uncle.

Just the latest on Siggy for those wondering....

It appears there's still no firm reports of an injury concern associated with his absence from last night's friendly - both the club's official site and local press just state he missed the match but offer no details of anything sinister.

"The attacking midfielder sat out the friendly win over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin and Swansea will hope that decision has him rested and ready for the game against Boro."

I think with so little on the game it made sense/good relations for club and country. The Kosovo win was the be all and end all.

      And the very latest...

      http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/martin-olsson-trains-swansea-city-12816302

Gylfi Sigurdsson also trained on Wednesday as he returned to Fairwood fully fit after international duty with Iceland, having sat out their win over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Tuesday night.

      So no injury it seems.

To do away with the constant flag-gate controversies, wouldn't it be better to eliminate flags altogether?

      1. dark91
        • 8 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

I don't think that is the best solution, cause sometimes you only get to know if a player is a doubt or not or suspended for example by checking if he is flagged or not

He is - he's on 12 and three from a ban. Apologies if that wasn't included in article - I'll get that added.

Having said that, he is currently dropped having been benched at Palace.
