The Midweek Team News

Jermain Defoe is doubtful for Sunderland’s trip to Leicester. Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny is sidelined for a home clash with West Ham, who welcome back Michail Antonio. Fernando Llorente remains a concern as Swansea entertain Spurs, while Palace have problems at the back for their trip to St Mary’s.

Laurent Koscielny has been ruled out of Arsenal’s clash with West Ham due to the ongoing Achilles complaint that forced him off against Man City on Sunday. Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain face late tests but could be in contention.

Michail Antonio is back for the Hammers after making a quick recovery from a hamstring injury. Aaron Cresswell will miss the next couple of matches, though Diafra Sakho has stepped up his fitness levels and has a chance of making the bench.

Marc Albrighton has recovered from illness in time for Leicester’s match with Sunderland. The Foxes need to make do without skipper Wes Morgan, though, who remains unavailable due to a back problem.

Jermain Defoe is doubtful for the Black Cats after missing training due to a knee issue picked up against Watford at the weekend.

Manolo Gabbiadini has failed to recover from a groin injury in time for Southampton’s match with Crystal Palace. Sofiane Boufal is uncertain to feature after sustaining a muscle problem during training.

Palace have mounting concerns in defence ahead of their trip to St Mary’s, with Scott Dann, James Tomkins and Patrick van Aanholt all ruled out by Sam Allardyce earlier this morning.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns from a three-match ban in time to face Everton. Jose Mourinho has doubts over the availability of Paul Pogba, and also conceded that he reckons Juan Mata is out “for a long time”.

Morgan Schneiderlin and Aaron Lennon remain unavailable for Everton’s trip to Old Trafford, though Ronald Koeman is hopeful that the former could be fit in time to face Leicester on Sunday.

Fernando Llorente remains “touch and go” for Swansea’s match with Spurs as he struggles to overcome an ankle problem that kept him out of the weekend goalless draw with Middlesbrough.

Harry Winks has been ruled out for Spurs with an ankle complaint, while fellow midfielder Victor Wanyama will undergo an assessment on a back problem.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe was somewhat elusive in this morning’s briefing, hinting at “a couple of concerns” that he refused to elaborate on ahead of the trip to Liverpool.

Xherdan Shaqiri remains sidelined for Stoke’s clash against Burnley, while Peter Crouch (knee) is a concern.

Middlesbrough’s Fabio is ruled out for at least the next two matches with the concussion that forced him off at Swansea. Gaston Ramirez is set to be assessed after limping off at the Liberty with an ankle injury.

Matt Phillips remains a big doubt for West Brom’s trip to Watford – the wide man has no more than “an outside chance” of shrugging off a hamstring problem in time for tonight’s clash.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of this evening’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream for breaking news – as the day unfolds, we will issue updates from Tuesday’s press conferences and refresh our Team News tab accordingly to keep you informed.

    POTENTIAL VALENCIA CONUNDRUM BREAKTHROUGH

Sorry about the capitals chaps, I felt it deserved special attention and maybe got a bit excited. I've been on the M.E.N and the same writer - Sam Luckhurst - who reported on the team squad that didn't include Valencia last night has written his predicted lineup today, which does indeed feature the man from Ecuador - http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/manchester-united-line-up-everton-12835714

Good omen surely regarding Valencia starting. He seems to be a reporter in the know when it comes to what's going on at Utd. Against Everton it would be something of a surprise to see him rested. Surely he would at least get a bench role. I think he is more likely to start now than not.

Thanks George! I'd think it would be safer to rest him for Sunderland match.

Sig hasn't scored for yonks, Swansea have lost 3 in 4 I think and Llorente is out injured, blunting his assist potential. Then there's the fact that it's the best defence in the league rolling into town. It will be a surprise if he returns points, but they might get a sneaky penalty or something.

      Anything in the bank?
Costa to Ibra, King to Zaha, maybe even Siggy to Coutinho appeal to me. You've a very nice team there though, could well save that transfer.

Wow, you've built up some serious TV!
I'd definitely be considering one of the three transfers I mentioned above.
Costa has neither form nor fixtures (apart from bou at the weekend) and Ibra has two doubles coming.
Liverpool have amazing fixtures, and Coutinho looks to be hitting his stride so King --> Coutinho?

Cout for me, but it's almost impossible to predict who'll get the points. I just prefer Coutinho as a player. Also hard to know how they'll play without Mane.

I know it may not matter as valencia might not play but hypothetically bench one:

    A) Valencia (EVE)
    B) Walker (swa)
    C) Alonso (MCI)
    D) Brunt (wat)

    1. Boetticher
      • 7 Years

I have similar. Valencia, Davies, Alonso, McAuley. I'm benching Alonso.

    2. Dr. Mantis Toboggan
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

      Definitely not Walker or Valencia.

After that it's a question I was faced with myself, I opted to play Alonso over Brunt because I don't think WBA are much more likely to keep a CS than Chelsea, and Alonso is a bigger attacking threat.

I think/hope Fabregas will make way for Matic, and Chelsea will be more defensive than they have been. Conte surely won't be happy the amount of goals conceded recently and the loss to Palace, and a draw suits them a lot better than City.

was meant to go a while ago but other transfers have had to take priority, im on brunt atm.

I would take the risk with Val personally. Yoshida not one for baps, so either they get a CS, he scores you 6(-4) or they dont and he score you 2(-4). So you're risking a -2 downside for an unlikey(as I fancy Palace to score) +2.

About as calm as I've been all season. Last few weeks all my plans have fallen into place, and I'll equal my best run of green arrows if I can get one midweek.

Almost certainly the calm before the storm. Big red arrow coming to send me right back to where I belong.

Just saw your team above, looks good - no wonder you're calm!

Here's hoping for a repeat of the reverse fixture for Alexis.

Funes Mori to Bertrand or Ben Davies for a hit? No Spurs defence currently.

Right, decision made. Andy Carroll the next donkey in for me (following in the footsteps of Rondon and Llorente.. bar is very low).
Fancy him to score against Arsenal and a decent pair after that v. SWA sun, plus a good enabler.

    Jaku / Randolph
Alonso Brunt Valencia / Pieters RFM
San(c)hez Siggy Eriksen Coutinho / Fletcher
    Kaku Carroll Vardy
    -4

    On the weekend:
    Vardy -> Kun
    RFM -> Barragan

caroll good option but can you strech it to tekkers?

Nah I can't - want Kun in on the weekend for Vardy, and I'd not be able to do that cleanly (would have to take a messy -8 and remove Alonso, which I don't want to do) if I did go Tekkers.

For 31-33, of the options I had, I'm happy to have Carroll as a punt. Tekkers can come in 34 along with Ibra for Kun (that's the plan, anyway...) 🙂

Such a crud transfer. Really not excited, but rationally it makes sense, he has ars (he scores against us a lot), SWA, sun as the next 3 and then will go in 34 for Tekkers, who will then go on the WC.

Stats say he's better than Tekkers, and the flexibility helps me out a lot.

Rondon and Llorente are both on my "never again" list. Carroll I owned last season when he was OK for bits of it... hopefully 3rd time's a charm!!

      Vardy.
In good form as are Leicester, at home to a poor Sunderland and don't see another option.
