Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

Double Gameweek 37 enters its fifth day of action this evening, serving up two more fixtures to entertain Fantasy managers.

Arsenal welcome Sunderland to the Emirates in the 7.45pm kick-off as Alexis Sanchez looks to add to his goal and assist haul in Saturday’s demolition of Stoke.

Captained by 10.6% of FPL managers, the Chilean is the second most popular armband pick for the Gameweek. As expected, he has shrugged off a leg problem to start against the Black Cats, while fellow weekend scorers Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud are also named in the first XI as Arsene Wenger’s side attempt to keep their hopes of a top-four finish alive.

Man City entertain West Bromwich Albion in the second match of their Double Gameweek at 8pm.

Sergio Aguero returns to the starting XI alongside Gabriel Jesus as Raheem Sterling drops to the bench for the home side. The Argentine produced zero points as a sub at home to Leicester on Saturday, though boasting a 17% ownership, he is City’s most captained player (8.1%) for their pair of fixtures.

The top transfer target for Double Gameweek 37, Jesus rewarded his 217,000+ new owners with an eight-point haul against the Foxes, while Leroy Sane’s 7% backers will be hoping for more of the same after he delivered a season-high 11 points in the weekend win.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Opinions:

    I have a 47 point lead

Him: Cedric Stephens Gabbiadini Alli Kane
Me: Yoshida Stephens JWP Vertonghan Alli Kane

He has TC left for 38. We both own Sanchez, Hazard, Kane, Jesu, Alonso, King. Watching out for who he might get in that might be a better candidate (Vardy, Coutinho?)

    But, it's over right?

you should be fine unless he picks the one who scores 20 points for his tc, and there always is one

I lost a commanding lead in my ML to that last day Walcott hattrick a few seasons ago. Was gutted.

But it shows if you're chasing in GW38 then you have to take a gamble with the captain.

Bet you're glad he didn't play his TC this week on alexis 😉
It should make for an entertaining end of the season for you guys.

You share too many players for him to catch that lead.
Job well done I'd say after a closer look.
Strange how your chaser didn't play the TC on Jesus or Alexis.

So far will do Hazard to Coutinho.

149 Points so far this week!

Kane, Eriksen, Vertonghen, Gabbi & Stephens still to play.

Jumped from 81K to 19K since GW34. I won't make the Top 10K, despite still having my TC to play, but for a first season I'm super happy.

Nice Top 10K target for next year!

I played BB this week. TC would have been a better option in hindsight (captained Sanchez), but what can you do.

I was debating whether to chuck the TC on Sanchez in GW36, but overslept on the deadline (currently Aus-based). Oopsy.

So, just gonna chuck the TC on whoever in the final week and hope for a bonus haul.

You might get lucky but yeah, this was the week for TC so it seems. I BBed too with a pathetic score - had 19 on the bench last week!

I TC'd Sanchez in 36, did well on the week (108), but currently wishing I'd done this week instead of BB. Still a few to play this week so might work out ok.
Someone's in for a haul next Sunday, Costa, Vardy perhaps?

Hey. Now you've learnt to always play your TC on your hottest dgw player.
81 points from Alexis would of been crazy stuff.
I did Jesus as a punt, oh well. Could of been amazing if sanchez got injured or whatever.
Annoying missing out on all those points. I missed the deadline to swap captain. I was out driving at the time.

Like a lot of peeps I'd like to thank Alexis Sanchez. The last 2 weeks he's helped claw back a 100 point deficit in my ML & now I'm 29 clear at the top.

133 point week with Lloris, Forster, Cedric, Alli, Gabs & Kane to play.

Some common themes amongst top 10 overall with regard to transfers.
With one exception 10 hits or less for the season.
They also tend to take a few -8 when they have 2FT's
    Thereby enabling a 'mini' WC
Said I would be more desciplined with hits this year but still took 24 hits.
    Must try harder next year.

The problem with this conclusion is that these guys have made the right decisions nearly all the way, so they don't need to take hits to correct 'mistakes'. You could take a 12 pointer every week and win FPL as long as the transfers are the right ones and if you're looking at the top 10 then you're looking at the teams who have made the right transfers.

That's not something any of us can achieve by trying to copy their hit strategy.

      1. Albrightondknight
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

But it's not just this year it's every year the top ones don't take a lot of hits and yes of course the hits that are taken have to be the right ones.

I think a strategy of a limited pool of players that you will transfer amongst while be flexible enough to get onboard the 5th mid like a King or Mahrez will work ok most years.

        1. Marknlard
          • 14 Years
          6 years, 12 months ago

Of course it's true every year!

There are managers from 1 to 4.5m who don't take a lot of hits, it's not the reason that these teams are top.

I am not saying it's the reason they are always top. I am saying it's a common theme with those that do well. And therefore I will do it too next year.
Analyzing the common factor of those that do well can't be a bad idea.
I am looking for a lot of other factors and will try to copy all of them next year.

I tried being ultra aggressive this year. Taking hits all over the place. I am sitting 729 overall. 69 transfers. 34 guys have the same number of points as me, but all fewer transfers. I can't tell if it has worked. I tend to remember the ones where I screwed up royally. Alli out for a hit to Lallana the week that Alli started his tear. Missed out on 7 goals before I bought him back. Jakupovic out for a hit the week he saved a penalty vs. Southampton. Obviously some have worked. Overall more fun being aggressive. But I will probably dial it back just slightly next year.

My biggest mistake was burning the wildcard. I knew it was risky, but my team was a mess. It paid off big immediately, but it has been too hard lately. I took lots of hits to prepare for this week. I stubbornly stayed away from King because my midfield was strong and he didn't have a double. Ridiculous. But it has been fun.

Yeah lessons like not having 15 dgwers and fielding on form sgwers is exactly the point I am trying to make with this post. Not just transfers but best approach to all elements of the game based on past experience.

Haz started off conservative but lots of hits recently certainly have not done any harm.

Thanks. The -8 point is interesting. I'd have guessed -4 more than -8 with two FTs.

Don't get the negativity here to this post. The math behind a hit is transparent.

My conclusion is that generally us managers are not good at predicting points (and we like to think we are), so giving up 4 points regularly to do that is surely worse than making less transfers at no cost.

I don't usually look at one game. I look at a major shift in fixtures and not wanting to take a month to adjust. But I will try to avoid the silly bandwagons that usually end in tears.

Fair enough. There are so many ways to play the game, and so many different outcomes for choices.

My point is that it would be better to err on the side of not taking hits when we're 50-50 - I want to be more aware to try and compensate for the optimistic bias and thrill of taking a hit.

The -8 is the thing I take from it most aswell.
Personally I end up bring a lot players back in a week or 2 later and when I look at that it's usually -8 overall which is just silly and will try not to do next season.

True dat. Especially costly when you don't bring them back early enough because you're trying to justify the hit you took.

Early thoughts on how to finish the season?

    Would love two punts.

    2ft, 0itb

    Cech
    Alonso / Monreal / Yoshida
    Sanchez / Hazard / Alli / Sane / King
    Kane / Jesus.

    Pickford / Stephens / Holgate / Anichebe.

Does anyone know if, historically, GW38 tends to be a low scoring affair (from an FPL points perspective) or not? Just thinking with teams that have little to play for there will be a higher risk of player rotation, players not giving it 100% etc. so maybe taking a -8 point hit isn't the best strategy.

Yes I don't see why he needs a rest, Monday night game, Sunday game, Saturday game doesn't seem like that much of a hectic schedule to me. He may be 'protected' by being subbed off, but he deserves to be involved in the celebrations no? The problem with him is....even if he does play....does he do anything other than prance around doing flicks... or does he actually try and score?!

I've done it (more so I stop deliberating). It's not inconceivable that he gets rested completely. Don't know why everyone thinks Costa Alonso etc will start as well. This match sharpness argument is nonsense. With Costas injury record I'd be resting him if I was Conte

So it is an advantage to save the second WC till before DGW(s)? Will you be saving it till late next season?

Having two DGWs in succession this year helped WC'ers a lot. Taking hits could get us big hitters for this week but it wouldn't be the same as being able to target good players in every area of the team.
