The Community Round Up

The pre-season stepped up a gear this week with the launch of Sky Sports’ Fantasy Football, plus the revelation of a new, additional format being run by the Fantasy Premier League.

Our community writers and hot topic posters were on hand to share their top tips for success in the Fantasy games that are set to launch this summer, as well as for those that have already opened their doors.

Also discussed this week was the potential wealth of striker options next season, advice on getting the most out of the pre-season programme of friendlies and whether the FPL price setters are on form, based on the handful of player valuations already announced.

Over in our Members table section, our resident statisticians have been looking at teams that raced out of the blocks last season, 2016/17’s misfiring strikers and Sky bonus magnets.

We round off with good news from our community’s competitors in the Euro U21 finals.

The Community Articles

The release of the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was among several launches that came under focus from our community writers.

Buffrey was on hand to offer a beginner’s guide to this limited transfer format, while Disable kicked off a Rate My Team discussion with a sneak preview of his initial Sky team selection.

European Cup qualification has piqued the interest of Lone Wolf, who has created his own Fantasy game around the early stages of the Champions League and Europa competitions.

Elsewhere, FPL Dreams elbowed his way into our community article section with his excellent guide to the Fantasy Tour De France game, and Niemi previewed the next set of fixtures in Eliteserien, the Norwegian top flight Fantasy game.

Congratulations to Giggs Boson for scooping the latest community writer of the month prize of a £20 Amazon voucher. His analysis of last season’s clean sheets was the most popular article in June, according to your votes.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The Fantasy Premier League revealed it is to launch a draft game for the 2017/18 season this week, with FC5750HC the first to let our community know of this exciting addition.

Mark was keen to find out your reaction to the announcement, while Jack Wilshire canvassed the views of those who are familiar with the draft format.

Hot topic poster dorrian123 also discussed the opening of the Sky Sports game this week, with the community given a sneak preview on Monday, two days before the official release.

Whichever format is being considered, nailing the best formation four our line-ups is remains key. Zoumas Bloomers wonders whether this could be the year that a 4-3-3 set up prevails, given the increasing number of striker and full-back options. Lionel’s Messy Boxers went one step further and pondered whether five at the back could reap rewards in 2017/18.

One disappointing aspect of 2016/17 was the poor selection of forward options across the price brackets. But, according to Lateriser12, Fantasy managers could be spoilt for choice in attack next term.

However, such an array of options up top will depend on a range of rumoured striker transfers coming to fruition this summer, which could make the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and even Manchester United’s forgotten man Wayne Rooney viable options.

Alexandre Lacazette’s move from Lyon to Arsenal is one significant transfer that has already materialised. Bibdh Subedi wonders whether the French striker, who averages almost a goal every two games at club level, will be a success in north London.

Lacazette was also one of a handful of players who had his FPL price tag revealed ahead of next week’s launch. Earlier in the week Mark asked which player prices you are most keen to find out first with Nonprophet particularly keen to find out the value of Liverpool’s wealth of midfield options.

Other announced player prices under discussion were Burnley stopper Tom Heaton’s valuation of 5.0 and Brighton set-piece specialist Anthony Knockaert’s 6.0m price tag. The former’s valuation prompted Net Gains to ask whether spending a total of 8.5 on goalkeepers is a viable strategy.

Fantasy planning is set to take a new twist from this weekend onwards, as Premier League sides begin their pre-season programme of friendlies. We asked for your top tips on getting the best pointers for the season ahead from these matches.

The summer schedule of the three promoted teams will be under scrutiny, particularly as they are set to struggle to maintain top flight status, according to our discussion on Brighton, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town’s prospects next season.

All three do have kind opening schedules on their side. To find out how the other 17 teams usually fare at the start of a campaign, we urge you to read Buffrey’s hot topic, which delves into the history books to see which teams have traditionally enjoyed a flying start.

Finally, to whet our appetite for the campaign ahead FPL Dreams sparked a discussion on our best and worst ever Premier League moments.

To view all our discussions, please visit our our Hot Topics page.

The Members Tables

To mark the launch of Sky Sports Fantasy Football, I’ve created a table looking at the game’s bonus point magnets. I’ve also made this table on baseline bonus points in FPL, after this set of data was added to the Members area this week via Update Three.

Jigger and Pony has added to Buffrey’s opening fixture analysis with a look at the most attacking teams last season over their opening six matches.

Elsewhere, Doosra has been finding out which strikers last season missed the most chances and hit the woodwork rather than the back of the net.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie  for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The 146 strong Fantasy Football Scout league emerged triumphant in the Euro U21 Fantasy game league of leagues, finishing top and 46 points ahead of Super-Liga Valtovia. Kroksted finished first in the league, with Ryan Seechurn taking second.

Colmans Mustard is still at the top of the community’s league in Eliteserien and in the H2H league FC Smack has taken the lead after Dutch Warriors suffered two defeats in a row.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Thoughts on this sky team? Not played it before, haven't had chance to read up on the points system and how it differs from fpl.

    Heaton
    Trippier, azpi, ward
    Pogba, Pedro, eriksen
    Kane, kaku, lacazette

    3-5-2 v 3-4-3

What's the difference really? One player. This season, choosing Lacazette over Sanchez(mid) for example could actually save money rather than hamper the rest of your team.

Good thinking. Generally the strikers score more points. Can't see Alexis topping any charts this coming season.

All formations valid this season imo.. Can't see myself sticking to one.

With so many wing backs in the league, premium defenders could possibly be more appealing than low-mid priced midfielders and strikers too. Not ruling out 5 at the back at the right time 🙂

Lol, yeah just making the point because seeing a lot of people saying 3-4-3 with 3 big strikers will make the rest of the team poor.

I'm looking to start with 5-3-2 or 5-2-3

    Kane, Jesus and

    A) King 7.5
    B) Tekkers 8.0

I was hoping to have both from the start but King reclassification has scuppered that.

There will be better and cheaper options than King imo.

Tekkers could be good but stung my for huge periods last season for less money.

King no longer interests me because of Defoe neither does Benteke due to costing £8m Rooney looks to be the best 'cheap' forward option so far.

Im not getting Defoe either. Just means King has lost pens to Defoe and his points will be split so my interest has gone elsewhere.

I haven't seen anything as of yet that's a better option than Rooney as striker at Everton for 8-9m.

Everton are a strong team. Lukaku got the second most goals out of anyone in the league.

Well I disagree. Defoe is a better option. Bournemouth are a better attack than Everton and Defoe is a better striker than Rooney. And Rooney won't be up front anyway

        8.5?

When Giroud was a starter for Arsenal he was 8.5 so I imagine Rooney is between 8-8.5. Rooney at 9 is also possible though.

Only thing I'm hoping for this season is that knee jerking is not overly rewarded with quick/high price rises.

Won't be able to commit anything like as much time to FPL this season and fear being left behind by a highly volatile player market.

It's bound to happen just get a price flacttuation app that tells you when a player is due to go up or down with an alarm.

Ya you are right the surge in transfers after match of the day made it real hard for managers that needed a few days to absorb things.

I was lucky enough to have the time to watch every PL game at least once last season but i sure wont have that luxury this season so i might have to alter my game and start playing the numbers instead of religiously watching football.

The thing is when you buy a wine from a recognized wine merchant you know what you are getting is legit.

There is a huge market in counterfeit wines now and lots of people are buying wines as a investment so if you want to be sure it is the real thing go with a reputable wine merchant.

think about it this way- if laca scores his price will go up in the first few weeks worth a gamble even if he plays rubbish and scores then can sell for a profit and get someone in form

I'm fairly certain Rooney will go to Everton. He will take over free kick and penalty duty. If not Rooney then Siggurdson. If neither of them sign he may be but at the same time he may be past it.

Aguero is Mansour's favourite player at City. He will start and score a lot of goals. 20 in 31 apps in the PL, but actually his best season at City overall with 33 in 45 (because he got 8 goals in the CL in 8 appearances).

I plan to start with him captain at the expense of Kane. Don't get more explosive and clinical than kun. Should be a bit cheaper than arry too and more importantly much lower ownership. I am more confident in city flying out of the gates than Spurs. Over the season he will frustrate getting rotated but easy to trade him out if it looks iffy.

Lol if Rooney do get Everton for his insane wages you can aboslsitely bet he'll be on penalties and free kicks.

Did anyone in Everton score a free kick like this in 2017? https://youtu.be/mn2mg9IZ6gU

He probably won't. He played stirker majority of the time under Mourinho.

He played midfield way more under LVG and wasn't classified as a mid next season so I doubt he will now

Defo a candidate for free kicks from the left side facing goal but Baines will be hard to shift off spot kicks and some free kicks he is still clinical in these situations.

I'm not saying he will take every free kick but he is very capable on free kicks so it makes sense to use him. and Im willing to bett Rooney will be on pens. Everton have no one better to take them.

De gea didn't do enough for 6 he did more in 2015/2016 season and he got 5.5 this time around.

I'm just going by history and trends though. It is possible everyone will get a significant price rise.

Yeah mentioned on Twitter earlier it might make Kachunga into a bit of a punt if he's the 5.5. Had a look at him earlier on in the season, 12g 2a for Huddersfield, seems like quite a direct winger. Could even be designated a forward, though hopefully not. No real track record at the top level, so it would definitely be a punt in fact

Lukaku for 90m + Rooney. Everton should win that but then they've spent money on okayish players. Pickford and Keane are really good though. If they bag Siggy and Giroud then I think they get the better end of the bargain. Sandro, Klassen, Oyenkuru hardly inspiring or replace Lukaku.

  21. Should the £100m fpl budget be increased?
    Net Gains

Is it time the budget was increased from the traditional £100m?

    Ince at 6.0 is delusional.

Together with Knockaert, FPL are showing us that a promoted midfielder isn't worth 5.0 any more, as they were a few years ago, and not 5.5 either, like last year.

They are gradually putting the prices up everywhere while keeping the budget the same.

In a way, it makes sense that the prices would go up because the EPL is spending way more money than ever before, leading to a higher quality of squad for all teams. We now have £80m and £90m players coming in at the top teams and even the relegation contenders can outspend almost any other team in European football. But then surely the budget should be increased from £100m?

I've been ok with the prices so far - except for ince. Unproven top flight player at a new club where in mooy there is arguably a better player.

I'm ok with knockaert at 6 - main set piece player for side he's well established at. But ince is nowhere near that.

So perhaps you have a point if this is indicative of how budget players are being valued.

Ince 14 goals and 6 assists (3608 minutes) for a team that came ninth
Knockaert 15 goals and 8 assists (3793 minutes) for a team that came second

There is a case for 6.0 - neither are proven in the top flight so if you put Knockaert ahead, it's marginal.

Don't get me wrong, I'm probably 60:40 on Ince being 5.5 but then lots of folk thought Knockaert looked a bargain.

When you're working on 0.5's it's difficult to get it perfect.

Ince is in a new team though where he is not likely to be the best pick - with mooy on set pieces.

With knockaert set pieces will be crucial as neither him nor ince will hit those goal and assist figs on the top flight.

          Ince at 5.5 is right.

I think the main concern tho is if ince is 6.0 what state will the 5.5 and 5.0 players be in.

When you say the promoted mids are worth 5.0 or 5.5 anymore, looking back, Matt Ritchie was 6.0 in 2015/16 when he came up with Bournemouth. Exactly what Knockaert - Championship Player of the Season - is this time.

Ince could of been 5.5 but his goal record and shots in the Championship were strong so I can see why he's come in at 6.0.

Haven't taken into account the increase in gulf between the Championship and PL IMO. Gone are the days of a top quality Championship team such as a Newcastle, Reading or Portsmouth that would go in to the PL with over 100pts. Instead the Championship has become more competitive with quality of player compressed into a narrower band. You used to be able to buy very good established players from the Championship and bring them into the PL (Jagielka and Tim Cahill for example). But these days the good Championship players are mostly those on loan from Chelsea, Arsenal etc.

They invent all these prices with the aim of making the 100m budget challenging and enjoyable while avoiding template teams. Why would they increase their made up budget to accommodate their made up prices?

No. FPL should take account of inflation IMO and adjust prices accordingly. £10m spent today is like £2m spent 15 years ago. Ince at 6.0 is mispriced (too high) and should have been at 5.0 or 5.5 at most.

I'm not sure how inflation in real life has much of an effect on FPL currency.

No way should the budget of 100 million change. If anything player prices should be relaxed as you suggest.

      Yes.
And if not, they should indeed stop rising all the prices.

There has been unpriced/out of position options every single year . I don't see this year being any different

Well said. Affordability has been easy the past 2 seasons. These tough prices will separate the men from the boys. At least Once is a guaranteed no go.

You would imagine these are the premium mids from those teams. There will be alternatives from those teams that are cheaper.

Last season there were a number of bargain prices like Coutinho (8.0), Lukaku (9.0) and Walker (5.5).

The first thing I am going to be doing is trying to get a sense of who has been slightly or very underpriced. Those three last year look to have been good VFM.

I'll be doing the same. I was annoyed I didn't get walker in at that price - don't want to make the same mistake again.

A tight budget brings more players into the game as options. It also increases the benefit of a good team value. All of this should be in the favour of skilled managers.

Impossible to say without seeing all the prices but short answer is no.

I'd hope that prices are considered when taking into account budget and in all my years playing it's pretty much been that way.

There will always be players we don't agree with on price - either too high, or too low but that will always be the case.

All that will happen if you increase the budget is all player prices go up.

Increasing the budget means increasing the likelihood of everyone having similar teams because we don't have to make as many sacrifices with the budget. So no.

Also the prices of promoted players increasing doesn't guarantee an increase in all prices. It was only a season or two ago that all 6.0 keepers were reduced to 5.5.

Truly baffling that the same site that generates the most hate against the template would be the place where the most complaining about prices being too expensive would emerge.

The budget saves us from the template -- I hope every player is 0.5m too expensive so we all have to think for ourselves and differentiate our styles of play.

Possibly but if they were to go down that route surely they just put the price of all players down rather than a larger budget 100m is nice round number

Just submitted a new article on WGTA, analysing the prospects of Southampton heading into the new season. Despite a relatively poor performance in the eyes of many, there are strong reasons for optimism next year - not least due to regression in goal conversion rate (here's looking at you, Manolo...)

    Check it out here: http://whogottheassist.com/posts/844

Baily at 6 and offering no goal threat and BPs is too expensive to the elite def pick. Good use of the Kane funds otherwise

Can anyone see GKs being hard capped at 5.0 to warrant the price increase of other players? Reckon would be stupid and probably isnt happening but you never know.

Fabregas had a goal or assist every 67 minutes last season.

To give you some perspective, Sanchez had a goal or assist every 91 minutes last season.

Fabregas started 4 out of the last 6 games. One to keep an eye on.
