The Community Round Up

The pre-season stepped up a gear this week with the launch of Sky Sports’ Fantasy Football, plus the revelation of a new, additional format being run by the Fantasy Premier League.

Our community writers and hot topic posters were on hand to share their top tips for success in the Fantasy games that are set to launch this summer, as well as for those that have already opened their doors.

Also discussed this week was the potential wealth of striker options next season, advice on getting the most out of the pre-season programme of friendlies and whether the FPL price setters are on form, based on the handful of player valuations already announced.

Over in our Members table section, our resident statisticians have been looking at teams that raced out of the blocks last season, 2016/17’s misfiring strikers and Sky bonus magnets.

We round off with good news from our community’s competitors in the Euro U21 finals.

The Community Articles

The release of the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was among several launches that came under focus from our community writers.

Buffrey was on hand to offer a beginner’s guide to this limited transfer format, while Disable kicked off a Rate My Team discussion with a sneak preview of his initial Sky team selection.

European Cup qualification has piqued the interest of Lone Wolf, who has created his own Fantasy game around the early stages of the Champions League and Europa competitions.

Elsewhere, FPL Dreams elbowed his way into our community article section with his excellent guide to the Fantasy Tour De France game, and Niemi previewed the next set of fixtures in Eliteserien, the Norwegian top flight Fantasy game.

Congratulations to Giggs Boson for scooping the latest community writer of the month prize of a £20 Amazon voucher. His analysis of last season’s clean sheets was the most popular article in June, according to your votes.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The Fantasy Premier League revealed it is to launch a draft game for the 2017/18 season this week, with FC5750HC the first to let our community know of this exciting addition.

Mark was keen to find out your reaction to the announcement, while Jack Wilshire canvassed the views of those who are familiar with the draft format.

Hot topic poster dorrian123 also discussed the opening of the Sky Sports game this week, with the community given a sneak preview on Monday, two days before the official release.

Whichever format is being considered, nailing the best formation four our line-ups is remains key. Zoumas Bloomers wonders whether this could be the year that a 4-3-3 set up prevails, given the increasing number of striker and full-back options. Lionel’s Messy Boxers went one step further and pondered whether five at the back could reap rewards in 2017/18.

One disappointing aspect of 2016/17 was the poor selection of forward options across the price brackets. But, according to Lateriser12, Fantasy managers could be spoilt for choice in attack next term.

However, such an array of options up top will depend on a range of rumoured striker transfers coming to fruition this summer, which could make the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and even Manchester United’s forgotten man Wayne Rooney viable options.

Alexandre Lacazette’s move from Lyon to Arsenal is one significant transfer that has already materialised. Bibdh Subedi wonders whether the French striker, who averages almost a goal every two games at club level, will be a success in north London.

Lacazette was also one of a handful of players who had his FPL price tag revealed ahead of next week’s launch. Earlier in the week Mark asked which player prices you are most keen to find out first with Nonprophet particularly keen to find out the value of Liverpool’s wealth of midfield options.

Other announced player prices under discussion were Burnley stopper Tom Heaton’s valuation of 5.0 and Brighton set-piece specialist Anthony Knockaert’s 6.0m price tag. The former’s valuation prompted Net Gains to ask whether spending a total of 8.5 on goalkeepers is a viable strategy.

Fantasy planning is set to take a new twist from this weekend onwards, as Premier League sides begin their pre-season programme of friendlies. We asked for your top tips on getting the best pointers for the season ahead from these matches.

The summer schedule of the three promoted teams will be under scrutiny, particularly as they are set to struggle to maintain top flight status, according to our discussion on Brighton, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town’s prospects next season.

All three do have kind opening schedules on their side. To find out how the other 17 teams usually fare at the start of a campaign, we urge you to read Buffrey’s hot topic, which delves into the history books to see which teams have traditionally enjoyed a flying start.

Finally, to whet our appetite for the campaign ahead FPL Dreams sparked a discussion on our best and worst ever Premier League moments.

To view all our discussions, please visit our our Hot Topics page.

The Members Tables

To mark the launch of Sky Sports Fantasy Football, I’ve created a table looking at the game’s bonus point magnets. I’ve also made this table on baseline bonus points in FPL, after this set of data was added to the Members area this week via Update Three.

Jigger and Pony has added to Buffrey’s opening fixture analysis with a look at the most attacking teams last season over their opening six matches.

Elsewhere, Doosra has been finding out which strikers last season missed the most chances and hit the woodwork rather than the back of the net.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie  for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The 146 strong Fantasy Football Scout league emerged triumphant in the Euro U21 Fantasy game league of leagues, finishing top and 46 points ahead of Super-Liga Valtovia. Kroksted finished first in the league, with Ryan Seechurn taking second.

Colmans Mustard is still at the top of the community’s league in Eliteserien and in the H2H league FC Smack has taken the lead after Dutch Warriors suffered two defeats in a row.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Only just caught up with the early price releases.

I'll be honest, I'm mentally trying to come to terms with Cesc, the leading assister in league history, being just 1m more than Tom Ince and a winger for Brighton who has never played in the league before.

    Mental.

But he's a proven player for a big team. This is where the points system falls down in fantasy. Anybody who has someone with no security of starts in their first eleven is asking for trouble anyway. But what if Chelsea get a couple of injuries and suddenly he's nailed for three months?

At that price every man and his dog dives in meaning people end up with the same players, ie the cheapest route into a great team.

        He should be 8 min.

Get him when he's starting and sell when he isn't? Probably the best value pick so far if it's the former.

Fabregas is at least guaranteed to perform well enough to be a starter, which quite frankly Tom Ince isn't.

6m for Ince, a proven failure at top level playing for a team who will be in bottom four... is stupid.

If it is enough that they played in PL.

Fair enough. I'm not going to say he is a proven flop either. Rather that at time, he couldn't get a chance in two quite poor PL teams. Which I do understand isn't very promising. He's probably at his very prime age for the type of player he is right now though, if the peak wasn't already last season.

I would have been interested if he was priced lower.

              Palace. Hull.

Plus he was valued at 25m three years ago. Which in today's market is now 50m.

              He's not worth 5.

He's a poor mans Darren Huckerby.

Also as a point of note, I don't think ANY player from a promoted club should cost more than 5.5m. Unless they are proven in the league previously.

6m is fine, price will drop if they fail so no real difference. 5.5m is too much of a bargain if they do well.

When has a player from a promoted club (not strikers) done so well in their first season that everyone has owned him?

Adam maybe? I'm literally drawing a blank.

          They are over priced.

They are only overpriced to the people who don't get them. Going by your rules, they shouldn't be more than 5m as they are bound to fail.

Swansea had quite a few. Vorm, Sinclair to an extent, Sigurdsson joined in January for £4.5m.

Come to think of it, the newly-promoted Newcastle defence that year was great. Krul, Steve Taylor.

It was a long time ago though, I get it.

They'll have such low ownership to start with that their price won't drop that much.

But if they don't perform, then who cares anyway I guess. Wouldn't make a difference if they were flops at £5.5m or £12.5m, nobody will take them.

Honestly at this point I don't really want him... he's gonna take gametime from Sane and Jesus.

Superb signing but I want those two to develop, especially as Sanchez is hitting 30's soon.

Good signing but I am conflicted a bit.

City had 60% possession average for the whole season and were undefeated for 10 games until Bravo came in.

They still finished third with an old backline and John stones and Bravo j goals.

The players also struggled to learn pep guardiola's style of play until the end of the season. That's when the year started winning 5-0

With these issues sorted out this coming season I literally put money on city winning the league.

Possesion means nothing particularly if you can't organise a defence to prevent counter attacks when you lose it.. They had Stones and Bravo in goals because Pep saw fit to spend a small fortune on both and put them there..

He was brutally exposed last season.. that's not to say he and his team can't improve a lot

Kompany was injured and Hart was on loan he had no choice but to play them, Bravo even lost his spot in a 1 keeper race . Stones was amazing for Everton at the time and Bravo was sensational for club and country. It's not Pep's fault they flopped

Hart was on loan because Pep bombed him out and bought that tube in his place.. it's precisely Peps fault both flopped imo asking goalkeepers and defenders to play out from the back at all costs puts unnecessary pressure on them and both suffered.. how about doing a bit of defensive work with Stones first of all before getiing him to fanny around at the back with it..

Err no trophies to show last season and pretty listless performance in some games.

Against the top seven in the Premier League, City won only two matches, and finished with a -8 goal difference. Included in those matches was a 4-0 loss to Everton in the middle of January.

Those squads were great when he arrived but he made them something extradinary. Barcelona was unstoppable they hammered clubs like Real Madrid without breaking a sweat on a regular basis.

I hear what you're saying although it doesn't have to be at their expense. I would line up 4-1-4-1 with a front 5 of:

            Sane - KDB - Sanchez - Jesus
            Aguero

As long as your back 6 are very strong defensively (which they will be) I don't see any team in the league touching you.

What if pep squad plays 3 at the back.

Rotation will take place and between ottamendi Kompany and stones. Stones will have to play sometime. That's when Sterling and Sane come in.

Mind you Sterling was benched quite a bit towards the bed of the season.

I think the negotiations between the player and club maybe, but Wenger can't sell, it'd be a PR disaster. Think holding to contract and then letting him go free next year when we don't have control of the situation is what we're looking at happening.

      This

Although I don't mind if prices are high across the board, makes for a decent game. It's where there are pockets of cheap players who everybody gets where the game can get boring.

That said, I'm expecting all the "wing backs" to remain defenders and several of them to be 7m plus.

    crazy idea just hit me.

If man city can't get any wingbacks they may opt to play 3 at the back with stones ottamendi and Kompany or even experiment and play Sane and Sterling wing backs in order to squeeze in everyone.

Pre season is the best chance pep will have to experiment experiment with the squad, and he's known to do it, sounds crazy but it may work out.

The midfield is extremely crowded I'm not saying 3-4-3 or Sane and Sterling wingbacks every game. But if Sanchez is signed inetivsbly gametime must be shared. Between UCL games too.

Actually, make it 7.5-8.0. Arnautovic was priced 7.5 for last season after scoring same ppg as Redmond did this season, and Redmond plays for a better team and arguably has more upside, better chances to score more.

Costa seem to suit managers who play dirty like Mourinho. Mourinho has managed players like Pepe and Diego Costa who have toned down their violent behaviour since Jose Mourinho stopped managing them so Mourinho was at least partly responsible and encouraging that behaviour.

Morata is the international class anyway. Has shown he can do it in the top CL matches. Good enough for me.

Belotti, imo, is way overpriced relative to his credentials.

        1. KingNidge
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

Well this is it i would have been over the moon had we completed the Morata deal as purely from a technical point of view he is a level above Lukaku.. on the other hand when it comes to pace power and clinical finishing Lukaku is hard to beat.. surely the touch is something he can improve and he would then be world beater material imo.. Morata would be an excellent signing for anyone though

My knowledge of Belotti doesn't go further than youtube videos tbh and he looks a brilliant centre forward but it is one stand out season only

          1. Camp No No
            • 10 Years
            6 years, 9 months ago

That's what I mean about Belotti. He only has one good season behind him. €100M is pretty much for that.

His output is very much his scoring, which he admirably does with both feet and head and by arse if it comes to that. But there are question marks on whether he can actually keep that good output up. Consider for instance that he scored 10 headed goals. For a guy with his physic that's quite a lot. In fact, he put in every third header he got. Maybe he's got some secret recipe to it, and his headers look really good, but I really doubt he is going to keep that conversion rate up on attempts that are generally lower conversion than shots. That's just one question mark I have on him.

The point for me is, I'd like to see him confirm another season before paying prices like €40M-€50M, and now we're talking about €100M and with just one season. But well, the big clubs have good scouts watching him, sure they have confirmed that he must be the best thing since anything.

People say that but he really hasn't... he was the only player trying for David Moyes and LVG.

His season under Mourinho he spent injured. And still was the most creative forward in FPL( referenced in FPL Lacazette scout article ). And scoring and assisting more than Martial Rashford and Lingard.

Rooney also registered as just below martial in united's pace tests and is the 10th fastest footballer in the world still in 2017.

Just wait and see, if he's the main striker at Everton he will be a great asset both in real life and FPL

Stats that are based on hearsay, do you see any value in them?

For example, Man Utd start strong. Stoke start badly.

The stats that have taken my eye are 'only 1 player in the top 25 fantasy scorers didn't have premier league experience'. Also Huddersfield only kept 12 cleansheets in 46 championship games.

I've noticed that Harry Kane starts slowly and explodes around christmas but would you dare not have him in your team because of a silly stat?

Harry Kane is usually coming back from injury or International duty

This, last two seasons was playing international football and/or was carrying an injury. This was his first summer off.

The season before last he went 7 games without a goal and then scored hattrick against Bournemouth. He was tired from the summer but he was way out of form. There is evidence to suggest he does better as the season progresses. It's a true stat but perhaps he will try to start strongly this year but that's why these stats don't mean much

That's the problem with stats, they are a report on the past. I prefer trying to predict the future

The season before that?! Three seasons ago he was 20 years old and got his first ever premier league start for Spurs in November...
This is absolute crap about him starting slow, he's only had two proper tries so far and had genuine reasons to not be in the best shape.

Tottenham have been very slow starters for quite sometime. No guarantee that will continue though. It was not just Kane, starting with Eriksen last season did not work out too well

Playing home games at Wembley is an interesting tidbit to consider now as well. Historically, most of us know Tottenham have a very poor record there.

I'm of the opinion the optimal 4 to build around are Lukaku, Jesus, Ozil and Alli. Kane is hard to go without, but I might be starting with those 4 as my main players.

Lamela will be back as well, that could change things. He provides balance to the team which is good for spurs fans but not for fantasy. I prefer when they start Son, Spurs seem to hammer teams when he's playing

Stats are statistics. Saying 'Man U start strong' is a positive statement based on nothing, not a statistic.

Provinding data and saying 'Man U have won 79% of their home games in the first quarter of each season for the last 5 years with a mean xG of 4.10-1.21', is stats.

Chances of Rooney being classed as a mid?

I am not backing up what those fans are saying, especially the "If Conte had wanted Lukaku he'd have got him" statement.

Costa gets underrated simply because he has been playing under defensive managers and doesn't take penalties.

Ozil is going to be such a good pick this season.

    1. Summer off
    2. Sanchez and Lacazzette
    3. Likely rested in Europa League

He comes in at 9.0 or 9.5, which he should, I see him having a huge fantasy season.

I do the season prior to the last one he was amazing so his performance justified his 9.5 pricing. Last season he sucked so he will be priced at 9 probably

3 assists and a goal in last 4 matches, clearly thriving in the new 3-4-3 formation. Question is whether AW will stick with it.

With the 'snake' draft league system is generally considered to be better being first pick or last pick? Or does it literally make no real difference?

Depends on numbers in your group I guess? If you have 10, maybe 1st and 20th is better than 10th & 11th?

If the 1st pick gets injured or fails, good luck. It's evens out after 2 picks.
