Scout Notes – Pre-Season

Romelu Lukaku breaks his duck while Antonio Valencia sees red as Manchester United warm up for the forthcoming derby clash with a second successive victory.

Elsewhere, Joe Hart might be close to a loan move, but it is up front where West Ham need fresh blood as they are held to a goalless draw in their opening pre-season encounter.

Here are the notes from the latest matches.

Real Salt Lake 1 Manchester United 2

Romelu Lukaku opened his Manchester United account with the winner in an increasingly bad-tempered and mildly bizarre match in Utah.

The Belgian forward, with 45.2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, is currently the most popular player in the game and he latched on to a Henrikh Mkhitaryan pass to score before the break in United’s second pre-season match of the summer.

The lively Mkhitaryan had earlier equalised for the Red Devils – his second strike of the US tour – following good work by Jesse Lingard. The 8.0-priced Armenian is currently in fine form and, with just 3.2% ownership, is doing his best to plug his differential credentials ahead of United’s very kindly set of opening fixtures.

Lingard (6.0) is another who has so far impressed over United’s two fixtures.

A completely new line-up took to the pitch for the second-half – their opponents had already made the same move just 33 minutes into the encounter – but the visitors finished the match with just ten men when Antonio Valencia was dismissed for a challenge from behind on Salt Lake’s Sebastian Saucedo.

Even then, referee Allen Chapman gave Jose Mourinho the option to simply substitute Valencia as he didn’t want to brandish a red card in a friendly. But when Mourinho refused, Valencia was given his marching orders.

The clash grew increasingly spicy in the second half, with Juan Mata injured by a heavy challenge from Saucedo, and Matteo Darmian also limping off with a knock late on.

Mourinho played down the extent of both injuries post-match.

“Mata has a big ankle, but I hope it is nothing important. A few days, a week, probably. Darmian’s problem is not an important one.”

After utilising a back three in the win over LA Galaxy at the weekend, Mourinho opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, declaring pre-match that his players would be:

“…playing in different positions and thinking football in a different way and being organised in a different way. We are also going to play with four at the back.”

That gave new signing Victor Lindelof, already a popular pick with 17.2% FPL ownership, a chance to make his first start for the club, while Mkhitaryan and Lingard were employed just behind Lukaku up front.

Mourinho’s 11 changes at the break included Sergio Romero replacing Joel Pereira in goal, with David de Gea not involved.

United will face rivals City in the early hours of Friday morning.

Manchester United XI First half: J Pereira; Fosu-Mensah, Lindelof, Jones, Blind; Carrick, Pogba, McTominay; Lingard, Mkhitaryan; Lukaku.

Manchester United XI Second half: Romero; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Darmian; Herrera, Fellaini, A Pereira; Mata (Mitchell 59), Martial (Tuanzebe 90); Rashford.

SK Sturm Graz II 0 West Ham United 0

Youngsters and new signings blooded, 22 players used and no-one injured – West Ham’s first run-out of the summer ticked a number of pre-season boxes.

Unfortunately, the ‘goals scored’ box wasn’t one of them as Slaven Bilic’s men drew a blank in Austria.

Bilic handed Pablo Zabaleta his Hammers debut at right-back in a 4-5-1 formation that had Ashley Fletcher as a lone striker supported by Andre Ayew from the left and Robert Snodgrass wide on the right.

Mark Noble returned following his recent operation on a long- standing abdominal injury to captain the first-half line-up and came close to breaking the deadlock with a late free-kick. Manuel Lanzini then took over set-piece duties after the interval.

The Argentinian midfielder is currently the most popular West Ham pick among Fantasy Premier League managers, his 7.0 price and attacking potential tempting 7.1% into early investment, and he had chances both from dead-ball situations and open play as the visitors pushed for a winner.

Left-back Aaron Cresswell took over the captain’s armband from Noble for the second half, while Spanish striker Toni Martinez replaced Fletcher up front, with Bilic’s striker options severely limited by injuries to Andy Carroll (hip) and Diafra Sakho (back).

That lack of depth among the forwards is one area Bilic has been keen to address in the transfer market, while the reported loan signing of England goalkeeper Joe Hart will at least provide plenty of competition at the other end of the pitch.

Michail Antonio (hamstring) and Winston Reid (knee) also played no part as they continue their recovery work, while Jose Fonte has been given extra time off after helping Portugal reach the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.

Bilic also revealed that midfielder Cheikou Kouyate suffered a setback in training, injuring his knee “in a very strange and awkward way”.

The Hammers face Fulham next on Thursday.

West Ham United XI: Adrian (Randolph 46); Zabaleta (Byram 46), Collins (Rice 46), Burke (Ogbonna 46), Masuaku (Cresswell 46); Noble (Cullen 46), Obiang (Makasi 46), Holland (Fernandes 46); Snodgrass (Lanzini 46), Ayew (Feghouli (46); Fletcher (Martinez 46).

A reminder that all the friendly results and key Scout Notes are being captured here, in our Pre-Season Guide.

Is Alonso worth it? Just looking at his stats for years previous and it doesn't make sense (honestly I've barely watched him barely) most goals hes ever scored in a season is 3..

Gonna monitor him I think. Don't think it's wise to start with him as he's a patchy player form-wise.

    2. MYNAMEISBigtopmark.sman

Yes he is. A defender is not meant to score points through goals. He plays for a measly defence. He plays high up the pitch. On free kicks. I lost count how many times he hit the crossbar. He started late last year and nearly finished as the highest scoring defender.

    3. DEAR DEIRDRE
      • 7 Years

I think so. I reckon he'll get more goals this season and he got 6 last season along with a few assists.

The way I see it, from a Chelsea coverage perspective, he's more nailed than the other 7.0 mid options with clean sheet and attacking prospects.

    4. Forever mirin
      • 8 Years

The eye test says yes imo. He was operating as an attacking winger most matches, hit the post numerous times iirc, is on free kicks, and loads of good crosses was not converted due to poor finishing. I expect a monster score this year if he's nailed.

Doesnt look like it will happen now, but Chelsea were chasing Alex Sandro for a while. So there is a chance they could sign another LWB to compete with Alonso

Alonso scored 5.7 PPG, so 0.81 PPG per million, which is the highest of defenders who played over 1000 mins. Next Betrand 0.8 PPGPM, Coleman 0.78, Blind 0.78, Trippier 0.78.... etc... So yes, if he keeps the same form as last season he is definately worth the cash. Similarly priced MID/FWD's don't come close to that return on the $.

Heaton, Austin, Ince, Fab, Heaton, Cresswell needs to go imo. Basically overpriced or too many question marks about their minutes.

Consider going 442 and replace with

      Myhill
      Willian
      KDB
      T.Carrol
      4.5 (striker)
      Kolasniac

      Ake - Walker/Valencia/Azpi

Not sure how Ince is overpriced or got question marks about his minutes. His record from the Championship is as good as Knockaert and Ritchie's and they wouldn't have paid what they did for him if he wasn't going to start in their midfield every game.

        1. Forever mirin

Then consider how poorly newly promoted midfielders usually perform (in FPL terms). Additionally, Huddersfield will most likely one of the lowest scoring teams (look at their record in the championship). If you want one I would recommend players that can rely on set pieces like Mooy and Ritchie.

Would personally avoid the injury prone Kompany and replace with Kolasniac (will operate as a winger in 3-4-3).

Or if you go Kompany - Tripper (possibly the most undervalued player in the game), you could also upgrade Yedlin to 5.0

I don't like it - too top heavy and unbalanced.

Depending on RLC as a 4th mid before we know if he'll even feature for the first team is a big NO from me - he might not be a good 5th mid if he's not nailed. I also don't like the Konpany pick - better value in the 5.5M bracket imo.

    RMT

    Foster

    Milner Lindelof Trippier Cedric

    Mane Sane Willian Ramsey

    Lukaku Kane

    Bench: Myhill Hunemeir Carroll Fletcher

A team really for the first 3 gwks up until int'l break, hence the weak bench.

Lukaku, Mane and Kane seem best captains over first 3 weeks.

Could change Milner and Carroll to Dunk and Tadic to transpose to 3-5-2?

I think, however, that Milner is stronger option in defence than Tadic in midfield.

Also have cover of all heavy-scoring top 6 teams in attack.

Fabregas may not play as Chelsea have recently signed Bakayoko so swap him for Willian or Pedro + have Mane or Salah instead of Coutinho

    Please rate my team:

    Foster, Elliot
    Milner, Trippier, Cedric, Ake, Dunk
De Bruyne, Salah, Willian, Ince, Loftus-Cheek
    Lukaku, Lacazette, Gayle

Please take into account this is just for the first 5-6 weeks then I'll use my WC to bring in Hazard. Also I'm assuming Liverpool will sign Van Dijk when choosing Milner. Thanks in advance!

    Foster / Elliot
Trippier Lindelöf Cédric Daniels / Hunemeier
KDB Willian Alli / Loftus-Cheek Carroll
    Firminho Lacazette Lukaku

    Opted for a 4-3-3

What do you guys think? Solid start?

    Foster (Myhill)
    Alonso Trippier Cedric Ake (4.5)
    KDB Alli Zaha Tadic (4.5)
    Lukaku, Laca (4.5)

The tinkering continues. Only thing that's not right here is Kane, but Alli is there and you can't start them all.

Kane never starts season well so you'll be fine without him until mid september

No guarantee at all on that but the team above looks great! Actually a lot if teams without him do! More even distribution of funds I guess

How many midfielders do you recommend having who are high priced in your team? (such as KDB Alli Eriksen)

As many as possible, I like 2 premium, a 7/7.5 and a bargain guy at 6 or 4.5 if it means a premium front 3.

Darren Fletcher has been WBA's most underrated player, Tony Pulis hasn't made no secret about it that he has been his most important player. With him gone now, and Pulis losening up a little, anyone going for WBA gk/def is walking into a trap.

I can make an extra .5 and put someone like Fraser in? Herrera? Capoue or Allen?

    Draft Team opinions......

    Foster // Elliot
Cedric Lindelof Trippier // Rangel Mee
Alli Pogba Carroll Sane // Loftus Cheeks
    Lukaku Kane Defoe

Pretty happy with the team but would rather a stronger 4th Midfielder (finding it hard to find a good cheap option) and still not totally sure on Defoe

Downgrade Defoe to Gayle and upgrade Caroll. Prolly Pogba to Willian.

So is an early WC a good strategy in general? My best season last year and I activated in gw4. Second before DGW.

    Foster
    Lindelof - Ake - Cedric - Trippier
    Eriksen - Willian - Cout - Alli
Laca - Lukaku. (Elliot - RLC - 5.0 Striker- Rangel).

How does this seem? If nice, then which 5.0 striker?

Actually think this is one of the best Iv seen! Double Spurs mids makes up for no kane....
£5.0M striker is gonna be very poor though

Same thoughts. I had Tadic at first for Alli and Gayle in there so I had 2 ITB that I would possibly use to switch Laca to Kane if he explodes. Confused now
