Scout Notes – Europa League

A smart finish from rising star Dominic Calvert-Lewin confirms Everton’s progress in the Europa League following a generally uneventful evening in Slovakia.

Ruzomberok 0 Everton 1 (0-2 on aggregate)

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal settled the second leg of Everton’s Europa League tie with Slovakian side Ruzomberok, with the Toffees now through to the competition’s play-off stage.

The England U19 international came on in the second half and finished smartly from the edge of the area after being released by Davy Klaassen.

Everton controlled a rather drab match, dominating possession and having 12 shots to their hosts’ four, but the lack of overall quality on show was demonstrated by the fact that the Toffees managed only two attempts on target.

Manager Ronald Koeman played four at the back in the first leg, but switched to a three-man defence of skipper Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Michael Keane in Slovakia.

Tom Davies and Leighton Baines were used as wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation in which Wayne Rooney and Sandro played up front, with Klaassen in the number 10 role just behind them.

Fantasy veteran Baines has consistently produced points as a left-back over the years. Should he spend time this season in a more advanced position, he could become a very attractive option indeed.

As for Davies, who managed two goals and three assists from a limited run in central midfield last year, he might struggle to repeat the feat from a wider and more defensive role. He did, however, impress, bringing an energy and verve notably lacking in Cuco Martina when he played as a right-back in the first leg.

Should Davies be utilised as a right wing-back in the continued absence of Seamus Coleman, it doesn’t look good news for the Fantasy prospects of either Martina or Mason Holgate as 4.5 options in defence.

Jordan Pickford made his debut in the Everton goal and would probably have wished for more to do as he bids to make the number one jersey his own, while up front, Rooney, Sandro and Klaassen again indulged in some nice interplay but produced little in the way of end product.

That was left to Calvert-Lewin, who replaced Sandro and played centrally, with Rooney allowed a freer role. Koeman used a similar tactic in the first match and Rooney looked more comfortable in both ties when not required to operate solely in the centre.

Whether that means Calvert-Lewin could be handed a regular role up front remains to be seen, although Koeman was quick to praise him, and hint at his future, post-match.

“Maybe Dominic feels a bit more comfortable as one of two strikers. He’s strong, he’s fast and he scored a great goal.”

His price – 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.8m in the Sky game – is classic budget third striker material, but how much pitch-time he’ll be handed is the great unknown.

What is beyond doubt is Everton’s daunting start to the domestic season. An opening day visit by Stoke City is the calm before a storm involving last year’s top three and a trip to Man United.

At least the Toffees now have two competitive matches under their belt, and they go into today’s play-off draw with another two-legged tie awaiting them on August 17 and 24.

In domestic terms, the first leg is four days prior to a Gameweek 2 trip to Manchester City, with the second leg taking place two days before a Gameweek 3 visit to Chelsea.

Progress past the play-offs and they will qualify for the group stages of European football’s most gruelling slog, throwing the risk of rotation into the mix of their squad.

Everton: Pickford; Williams, Keane, Jagielka; Davies, Schneiderlin (Barry 81), Gueye, Baines, Klaassen; Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 69), Rooney (Mirallas 86).

Subs not used: Stekelenburg, Martina, Holgate, Lookman.

Would change Herrera, possibly downgrade Chico to bench fodder and start a 4.5 defender that isn't playing a top six team first few gameweeks

Think kolasinac will be the highest scoring defender if they keep the formation they were using at end of last season especially with no champions league to worry about

Is it my imagination or are the 4.5m defenders worse than ever? In the past its seemed straightforward to find three decent defenders who rotated well priced at 4.5.
Also on a kinda related note can anyone think of a bargain defender or GK in past seasons like Michu, king etc. Always seems to be mid?
Maybe this is why the 343 always worked out previously? You get some bargain mid, rotate some cheap Defs and get what you pay for upfront? Kinda feel this is the season for 442.

That's the whole point, the bargain options appear during the season when someone picks up form or someone gets injured. Its about how quickly you latch onto them. Who would have said King at start of last season? Or Michu the one before? Would be boring if everyone knew the best bargains from the start

Prefer KDB for city coverage until we find out what the aguero/Jesus situation is. Also double up on man utd and spurs in attack could prove costly if either team have a slow start. Otherwise nice team 7/10

Also RLC if not nailed could be in for a big price drop, and Pickford's starting schedule is horrible.. but could prove me wrong and end up with lots of save points

Continually having the issue of lacazette or Jesus?

Have KDB in the midfield as coverage but Man City look to have been dominant in pre season.

Coverage is key until you know more and can judge form. Especially with the Aguero situation. Lacazette. Plus he had a better goals per game ratio than both Kane, Lukaku and Jesus last season. Granted was in France but still impressive

Yeah that's the issue, trying to cover as many teams as possible, but that opening fixture against Brighton is looking increasingly tasty for a Man City side in this sort of form.

Haven't seen much of arsenals pre season and have to take into account Jesus has had half a season to bed in whereas Lacazette is still new to the premier league.

Jesus hit the ground running and Wenger has said he reckons will take about two months for lacazette to settle in, however Leicester have drawn 1 and lost 2 to lower league opposition in pre season and I think Brighton will park the bus on first prem game

Curious to know which method fpl players prefer to start off with.. Do you have a tried and tested method? 2 methods how i think you can approach it..

    1. Trying To get a balanced squad with "coverage" and tweak where needed

    2. Go for broke with fixtures with the teams expected to do well ignoring "coverage " with the plan to wild card early and get in the form players when the bandwagons becomes more clear

Of course there's other ways to approach it but I usually go for option 1 and more times than not it backfires spectacularly so might try another approach but would like to hear the thoughts of others on how you approach it and any methods you'd avoid in future

Usually try punt the first 3 gameweeks with good fixtures and backfires. Going for coverage this season and will WC if need too at international break

option 1 for me, but I do look a lot to fixtures. That's why I'll get rid of Chelsea and Liverpool players after game week 1 and 2. Salah and Willian out --> Alli and ozil in.

Lallana is out for 2 months. Who starts for Liverpool then, Hendo/Can/Coutinho? Looking at Gini but unsure about his game time.

I think ryan might be this seasons heaton and with the 1mil i could upgrade abraham if someone else looks nailed and is scoring.

I've got a risky team, but I'm loving it:

    Forster/ Elliot
    Lidelöf/ Holding/ Trippier (Mee/ Rangel)
    Salah/ KDB/ Willian/ Mhkitaryan/ Ritchie
    Lacazette/ Batshuayi (Quaner)
    3.0 million ITB

I'm not a big fan of Kane's price and considered to start with Batshuayi. The opening fixture against Burnley he'll be my captain, since his pre season form is more than great

Salah plays 2 easy opening fixtures and then they'll

      Pressed on 'post' ffs.

... and then Liverpool will have very hard fixtures. And so does Willian. So they will be subbed for özil and alli. They have great fixtures, and I believe that ozil will get 20+ assist with Sanchez AND lacazette in front of him. If ozil will not perform, I'll just sub salah for Sanchez, and leave Willian. I'm a big Arsenal fan so that's why I do want big Arsenal coverage. If lacazette doesn't perform from the beginning (or gets subbed around 70th minute) I'll swap him for Jesus. Holding will definitely play, so he's an absolute bargain. I hope my love for Arsenal will not shoot me in the foot. But I'm pretty confident that this team will do surprisingly well. It's in IMO well balanced and great coverage for every team. If someone has feedback, I would love to hear it!

    Goodbye fantasy football surgery !
The latest podcast was full of the most auto-contradictory, derivitive waffle I've ever heard.
Now that I know better, this is shameful twaddle.

Is Lukaku essential? Trying to have adequate coverage of top teams and it is very difficult. I get the feeling he could start trolling early and we could cover via Pog/Miki.
