The Numbers Game – West Bromwich Albion

Our summer series of members’ articles – offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of 2016/17 – continues with West Bromwich Albion.

To begin with, we’ll look at the performance levels over the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

In addition, we’ll check in on the Baggies’ threat from set-pieces, in particular, with their reliance on dead-ball situations remaining pivotal to their prospects.

West Brom certainly upped their attacking output in the previous season.

Pulis’ side netted a mere 34 goals – the second-worst record in the top-flight – on their way to finishing in fourteenth spot in 2015/6. Yet last term, they found the net on 43 occasions to claim tenth position.

Any chance of a v. quick RMT...

    Foster
    Cedric, Lindelhof, Dann
    JWP, Zaha, KDB, Mane
    Quaner, Kaku, Kane

    Elliot, Ritchie, Tripper, Range

Lindelof = No. might not start. Swap to someone else.
Dann = no. Daniels is a better option at 5M.
      Ritchie > Caroll.
      Trippier > a 4.5M def.
      Zaha > eriksen

Will KDB be given license to get further forward in a 3-4-3 than the 4-3-3 City played last season?

Hey guys, first RMT. Feel free to pick it to pieces!

    Forster / (Elliot)

    Bailly / Kompany / Bertrand / PvA

    KDB / Mkhi / Zaha / Groß / (Carroll)

    Kane / Lukaku

I feel like I'm going too heavy at the back, especially since clean sheets are hard to predict at the start of the season, but I don't like any of the 3rd striker options.

Looks decent for 4-4-2. Assuming the other two players are £4m DF & £4.5m FW fodder?

I'll rate it mate. Only if you promise to rate mine later.... I like it for a Lukakane team. Though having both will obviously weaken you.

I'd downgrade one of your pricy defenders in order to upgrade Mkhi to a guaranteed big hitter. You've got two excellent strikers which is enough, reduce the risk in the mid

I like it apart from Groß, prefer Fraser.

Current personal ideas on 3rd Striker's are J.Rod/Hernandez/King.

easy to get lost in the numbers
heatmaps are telling me Alonso will have a few shots on goal sw1, considering him over Kaku for C

I think way too much emphasis is put on Alonso. Compare Alonso and Bertrand's heat maps

            😆

You see my point though. People say "Alonso is like a midfielder" - well if you look at the heatmap, and compare him to a proper midfield winger (Like Redmond, Hazard or Coutinho for example) you see that he isn't

this debate is just convincing me of Alonso's value.. he has had more shots (both off and on) target than Redmond, Willian and Zaha... and they are the only ones I checked
obv cant compare him to a 9m+ midfielder

just did, Alonso had way more touches in the final third and a lot more shots (on and off target) as is to be expected

    Final draft for this weekend.

Planning on an early wildcard hence my weak bench. Going for an early run of as many easy fixtures.

    Foster (Elliot)

    Cedric Kolasnic Dawson (Marriapa, Long)

Debryne, Salah, Redmond, Dawson (Loftus Cheek)

    Kane, Jrod, Lukaku (C)

    Any thoughts?

        It's inevitable in my opinion.

Always so many changes early on, the most well planned team can fall apart in 2 GWs.

Plus I always go for TV early on in teh season so can jump on bandwagons as they appear.

Atsu is definitely not nailed. We've just signed a new LM for £14m and Aarons is back from injury. Ritchie isn't going anywhere on the right. He'll probably start against Spurs, but is nowhere near nailed.

Not sure about TAA, maybe you can get Dunk/Sutner, good rotation with daniels and mee. You can almost always have 2 of those with good fixtures.

Also, i prefer JwP over Fraser. I think Pellegrini is focused on set pieces. But fraser can outscore him of course.

Hows this team looking? Left 1m itb to give me some room to juggle around after gw1 depending on who plays well. Going with carroll over other mids e.g. JWP, despite being a big fan of JWP as Carroll is 100% nailed to start and with set pieces in his locker as long as sigurdsson isn't on the field, I think he is better than most mids under 6m.
