The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Saturday

A classic knee jerk in the making, Mohamed Salah owners were already fidgeting by half-time at Vicarage Road.

Fresh from four goals in pre-season, he had endured an inauspicious start to life back in the Premier League. A toe-poked skyward effort when through on goal, packaged up with several over miscues and errant first touches totalled a miserable first 45 minutes for Salah.

In contrast, Sadio Mane had sparkled and smartly converted Emre Can’s flick to peg back a plucky first half Watford showing.

Shifted to the left flank by Salah’s arrival, it looked as though Mane had adjusted to already demonstrate that he was back as the go-to guy among the opulence in Liverpool’s attack.

But things were to turn dramatically.

Just through sheer pace and endeavour, Salah first won a penalty via Heurelho Gomes’ clumsy telescopic arms and then sprinted to convert Roberto Firmino’s chipped effort from two yards out.

He ended on 11 points and was quickly installed as the top transfer target from those in action on the day.

He tallied five shots, all in the penalty area and eight touches in the box – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 1 so far. Just as we expected, the statistics are Salah’s friend and will likely reinforce his case throughout the season.

Mane, who picked up a booking, was left trailing and, on today’s evidence, will clearly have his work cut out to justify his billing as the most expensive option in Jurgen Klopp’s armoury.

Owned by 23.5% to Salah’s 23.3%, that narrow gap is closing as Philippe Coutinho owners bail out, turning to the Egyptian as their replacement.

It is, of course, early days and it’s back at Anfield where Mane has previously been so potent.

Nine of his 13 goals arrived on Merseyside last season and he will have Crystal Palace in his sights for Gameweek 2.

Firmino also deserves our recognition. With Klopp relegating James Milner to his bench, the Brazilian was again on penalty duties and expertly converted following Salah’s tumble.

With the assist to follow, Firmino waltzed his way to the maximum bonus points, already benefiting from his new classification as a forward.

If Milner is to remain out of favour – presumably now discounted as a left-back – then Firmino will surely prosper.

Liverpool won eight penalties last season, with all but one converted by Milner. Firmino scored 11 goals regardless.

We have no reason to expect that Liverpool’s penalty count will regress. Indeed, with Salah adding his pace to Mane’s bursts, there’s every chance it will be maintained or even increased.

The conclusion is that Firmino’s stock is on the rise and that suddenly, Mane is in danger of slipping further down our Liverpool attack pecking order.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not a good day for Alonso Jesús and Zaha but well... In a few weeks Im sure Ramsey will be in my WC team. Advice: Save transfer unless you have Cahill or Fabregas

I am keeping Fabregas personally. It is just one game which was very tough anyway. If he does not lose his position in the team, then I am keeping. This guy can pass and assist like only a few!

That's fine, but you could stand to lose value and he's likely to be seeing the bench when Bakayoko returns soon.

How did Jesus, KDB, Aguero and Kompany do today? My mate was visiting me and is flying home now so spent the day in the pub with them and missed the matches.

It was a difficult game for City with Brighton parking the bus. KDB was pulling the strings from midfield but not really directly involved in many chances. He did assisted Jesus, who then scored with his hand and got booked for it. Jesus got into some good positions but failed to score from them. A bit later Jesus missed a sitter as well, assisted by Kun. Aguero later missed a good chance and also scored on a Silva assist (an attack set up by KDB). Kompany didn't really have to do much, Brighton had like 2 chances, both on corners

All good but Aguero often been more center of everything. Jesús and KDB bossed first half but unlucky no points. Kompany a rock of course

Aguero and Jesus could have and probably should have ended the match with at least a couple goals each.

KDB was man of the match imo and will definitely be fpl relevant this season despite not coming away with any points this gw.

Kompany is Kompany. When he plays City keep clean sheets. When he doesn't play City don't keep clean sheets. Always an fpl option until the next injury arrives.

Kompany holds the defence together, MCI def is an asset when he is around, almost essential in this fixture run.

As soon as he goes down injured, ditch their defence.

KDB unlucky to miss out on an assist, but he's the kind of player you need to set and forget. Points will come if you strap the knee down.

Kompany wasnt utilised properly for corners. They used too many short corners that didnt even enter the box. I think he even didnt go up for the last one! Smfh

Walker was upfield a lot leaving Kompany to cover large areas. This made me nervous 'cause Kompany always breaks down when sprinting/moving explosively.

Only people looking to make transfers should be the ejits like myself who picked the likes of Iwobe. Worrying about Zaha or wanting to do JRod to Mournie is just overthinking it.

So I am on 51 points with Valencia & Lukaku (C) left to play.
Who do i bench, and how do i line up next week?

    FoRster (Elliot)
Walker - Valencia - Bertrand (Mee) (Löwe)
KDB - Willian - Zaha - Wijnaldum (Carroll)
    Mounie - Lacazette - Lukaku (C)

Zaha, Willian and Wijnaldum need to make room for Mee and maybe even Löwe.

      Defence :

+++ Foster reassured me that yes, WBA can do clean sheets.
+++ Yoshida brought some attacking threat as a bonus.
+ TAA took the corners and could have delivered assists.
+ Aké got a bonus point without scoring/assisting or getting a CS.

      Midfield :

+++ Salah proved to be an excellent choice at 0.5 less than Mané.
+ : De Bruyne saved his blank with an CS point.

Can't say I'm happy with the perfs of Zaha, Jesus & Gabbi though.

Only positives for me... 32 pts, but score doesn't matter... Only benchfodder (Long) wasn't in starting lineup... That's what matters most in GW1, imo

Kompany Dawson Kola did well "broke even"

      Only Fraser and Jesus flopped

Still have Kaku c Kane Ritchie Elliott to play

I would be happy to get 70+pts or 25pts above avg

KDB and Iwobi -> Eriksen and Ramsey is tempting me, depending on Spurs tomorrow.

Team is in good shape, however no Spurs may end up being a concern. Do you think it would be worth losing a City attacking asset?

    Here's my team, for reference.

    ----------------Fabianski-----------
    -------Bailly | Stones | Stephens---
    KDB | Mkhitaryan | Willian | Iwobi
    -------Lukaku | Jesus | Firmino---

    Elliot -- Carroll -- TAA -- Long ( 1.0 in the bank )

Why KDB? Terrible sideways transfers imo
