Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Ward the Latest Clarets Casualty

Burnley grind out a victory over Stoke City to climb to the heady heights of fourth in the table, but the night is tainted for over 1.4 million Fantasy managers as Stephen Ward departs with an injury and just a single point.

Ward is the most owned defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as part of over 24.5% squads. However, he was forced off after 40 minutes of the 1-0 win over the Potters having suffered a knock to his knee.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche offered no prognosis on the setback, with Ward having to wait for the swelling to reduce before there is any clarity on the damage sustained.

It meant that the left-back joined both Ben Mee and Matt Lowton in missing out on another Burnley clean sheet.

Mee – himself owned by 681,000 FPL managers – just missed out on Tuesday night, with Dyche showing caution on the centre-back’s gashed knee. It seems very likely that he will make a return for the Gameweek 18 trip to Brighton.

Lowton, who boasts a more modest ownership of 158,000, is back training and could also be in line to return at the Amex Stadium.

But, for on Tuesday, it was left to James Tarkowski and Nick Pope to profit from another determined display.

The former is currently the top transfer target following a fifth clean sheet in eight Gameweeks. However, Tarkowski lost out to both the goal scorer Ashley Barnes and fellow centre-back Kevin Long, when it came to bonus points.

Long – who has deputised in Mee’s absence – managed to edge out Tarkowski in the Bonus Points System (BPS) by virtue of completing 73% of his passes, compared with his team-mate’s 67%. That ultimately decided the bonus split.

Pope Back Among The Bonus

But it was goalkeeper Nick Pope who again stood out.

He pulled off seven saves on the night, having made that many stops in his previous five Gameweeks.

Together with 13 recoveries, and the fact that Long was the only member of the back four to gain BPS from pass completion, Pope cruised to the maximum three bonus points.

That took him to 12 in total, more than any other keeper and also more than top ranked defender Cesar Azpilicueta, who has 11.

Incredibly, Pope has delivered those 12 bonus points from just 13 starts, a spell which also includes seven clean sheets and ten points from saves.

Burnley’s fixtures following the Brighton trip turn against them rather viciously.

The Clarets will face Spurs at Turf Moor and Manchester United at Old Trafford immediately after the Seagulls visit. Matches with Liverpool – and United again – follow over the subsequent four Gameweeks.

Relying on a Burnley defender over that spell carries obvious risk, with a rotation option advised.

However, Pope could well remain profitable in tougher fixtures, given his propensity for saves points.

Choupo-Moting on the timber

Stoke City changed their shape following the 5-1 hammering at Spurs, with manager Mark Hughes deploying a back four.

Mame Biram Diouf lined up with Peter Crouch in a front two and, more significantly perhaps, it meant no place for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Part of 254,000+ squads, the Cameroon international had failed to produce a goal or an assist in his last four Gameweeks and, having been withdrawn early in two of the previous three outings, the writing was perhaps on the wall.

He saw just six minutes of action at Turf Moor and his owners must now hope that he can claim a recall for the Gameweek 18 visit of West Ham.

Hughes brought in Ramadan Sobhi to play on the left flank, with Xherdan Shaqiri on the right and the fit-again Geoff Cameron playing behind him at full-back.

After an improved performance and with the Hammers clash arguably a must-win for Stoke, it remains to be seen if Hughes alters his line-up.

He looks likely to be forced to make one change, with Kurt Zouma departing with a hamstring injury on the hour-mark at Turf Moor.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Wait and cross your fingers on Richarlison and Morata.

Davies is the obvious one to ship.

Yeh I guess so, the only problem is I don't know whether Moanrinho will revert to 3 at the back or even if he carries on 4 at the back he can only pick 2 of smalling, jones, lindelof and rojo. He recently said if Rojo can't play he has others that can. Also smalling has practically been playing consistently for the last 10+ Games so maybe he's fixed?

I'm looking at which united defender to bring in for Moreno.

Have Kiko & Richarlison but don’t mind keeping them if they are out for just this week.

Need a solild defender and Smalling has good fixtures.

Lindelof is not Mourinho’s first choice.

Oh what possibilities a backline of Jones, Christensen, Naughton, Long, Ogbonna would open up. What's the story about Christensen, how long will he keep his position?

With that backline I could afford this team:
    Gomes, Elliot
    Jones, Christensen, Naughton, Long, Ogbonna
    Mahrez, Hazard, Sterling, Loftus-Cheek, Salah
    Kane, Morata, Calvert-Lewin

Would anybody have a spare 12points to give me to use for setting up this team? 🙂

Looks like I picked the wrong week to sell Pope.

Ouch. Dunno why you'd sell him before STK though?

Double Burnley defence wasn't working out for me so I kept Ward and 'upgraded' Pope to DDG. And although Stoke don't win many, they usually score at least one goal.

DDG will probably get a massive haul v Bournemouth. They shoot a lot and are awful.

What's the one thing that annoys you more than any other in FPL?

Mine is having clean sheets ruined by late consolations. Obviously as an Azpi owner, last night had me raging hard as it was such a pointless goal in the context of the match, but it meant lost points for a key differential in my ML. Especially considering rivals had Christensen!

Anyway, it got me thinking about other frustrating parts of the game. Players subbed off between 55-60 mins, silly yellow cards, etc. Would love to hear what grinds other people's gears, however minor it may seem to be!

Definitely late consolation goals. Especially when it ruins baps.

Also getting 0 pointers from YC and early sub or conceding 2 goals. You think you'll get an auto-sub then click the info and see your player was just awful.

things like ramsey getting a dubious penalty v burnley in the last seconds few gw ago..
that influenced my h2h loss as rival had ramsey and i had burnley defence.

An injured defender being subbed on with 5 mins to go conceding 2 goals and picking up another injury leaving subs rooted to the bench

Yeah this really messed me up. Especially when the player has SO much potential when fit and is a great differential. FML..

Single most frustrating element is volatile price changes stressing me into premmature transfers. No-one to blame but myself though - trying to play with some extra funds itb this season.

Player scoring then celebrating too much, getting a yellow, and losing baps

        I’m talking to you Firmino!!

Player coming on for 1 minute when you have a 9 pointer waiting to come in for him (Davies with Mee on the bench)

Rivals getting jammy auto-sub points when you hardly ever have to utilise your bench.

The one week you need your bench, you have Dunk -2 to come in.

Doesn't he mean tactical changes to address the terrible defending of late? Gross is their ONLY creative outlet. Without him they will really struggle going forward.

I have to get it out of my system: I lost 3 clean sheets last night (one to injury and two in the last minute of matches) AND I'll be out of the cup since my 3 million something opponent had Willian and he's pretty much got the rest of his team playing today
