The first ScoutCast of 2018 is sprinkled with a festive catch-up, an assessment of the latest transfer bandwagons and even some logic-defying magic.

YouTube viewers will need to pay close attention to Granville and Jonty about 1 minute and 56 seconds in to catch their conjuring trick; others will just have to use their imagination and be content with the rest of this 90-minute marathon episode.

We explore the lure of Aguero, the clamour for Lingard and the Fantasy freak of nature that is Marcos Alonso. Third striker options are assessed, we conduct a post-mortem on Liverpool following Coutinho’s exit and we start hatching plans for February’s forthcoming blank before the usual Gameweek preview ends proceedings.

Next week Granville saws Jonty in half and Az pulls a rabbit out of his hipster beard.

                  I want Tosun to perform as that mid price bracket for forward is a vacant spot this season, he can fill in with expensive strikers and also be a regular starter I guess .

                    In your opinion Is this the easiest time to improve rankings. Or was the easiest time to improve rankings during gw12-22 where 11 gameweeks in 40 days would of caught many people out

                      Xmas is normally a good time, blanks and DGWs are even better as plenty are stuck with less than 11 and you can potentially have more players than those above you in the DGWs. The free hit chip has added another component to serious and casual players.

                        Yeah I reckon people that have already used the free hit chip will be at a serious disadvantage come gameweeks 28 31 and 35. Do you have any idea on when you are using the chip or too early to think about? Me personally im thinking gw31 as it's the biggest blank gw but people have given strong arguments on using it on 28 and 35 as well

                          Don't think I'll use it in 28 if I can help it. Either 31 or 35 depending on the fixtures seems the plan.

                          Can only use the FH once, so, going with this logic, everyone will be disadvantaged for 2/3 of the blank gameweeks.

                            Well 28 can be prepared for and the other fixtures will be more obvious so some teams will play in all the blanks.

                      This whole people being caught out is a bit of a myth. People who had no idea about the Spurs-West Ham DGW did better than those of us who prepared for it, and look better going forward because they don't have triple West Ham or triple Spurs 😉

                          I guess my more serious point is that the Christmas period is a lot more down to luck than preparation compared to the late blanks and DGWs. All we know about the hectic Christmas schedule is that there's going to be more rotation than normal, but other than making sure our bench is ok we can't do anything about it. We can overthink it as much as we want but our captain may end up being benched for a late cameo, whereas someone who didn't prepare for it is just as likely to get lucky.

                          No chance of that happening in the blanks or DGWs, where preparation always wins. (sure, luck plays a part as well, and some players get rotated but it's a lot more predictable and profitable)

                        but if you failed to prepare for it and let's say spurs performed better than 2-0 and 1-1 then players that didn't prepare for it that maybe had salah captain and only Kane from spurs could of suffered

                          To be honest 2 games in 48 hours was never going to bode well for either team. I got two players from each, just enough to cover my bases, but there was no way I was tripling up.

                    Why 4 DGWs? I thought the money was currently on 2 or 3?

                    Must admit I haven't paid a huge amount of attention to it yet, though.

                      They may need to space them out like Arsenal/S'ton last season especially if City do well in everything they are in.

                      3 is pretty much guaranteed which would include a small one.

                      I definitely agree that the upcoming period with DGWs and blank is the most fun.
                      It really adds another layer of planning besides deciding on players and transfers.
                      Figuring out which overall strategy seems like the best is a lot of fun and maneuvering everything optimally really takes work, skill and luck.
                      Executing the strategy to perfection in covering the blanks and excelling in the DGWs is the best feeling a FPL manager can have in my opinion.
                      Besides that I think it is a great time to crush your ML rivals, soar up in OR and hopefully experience a couple of very high scoring game weeks!

                          Totally agree, I always find that I am going through the motions during the last 10 weeks or so, big hitters set in stone, everyone doing the same thing and planning for dgws while prepping their wildcard etc

                            I can see what you mean, but still there are a lot of options. And besides actually choosing players, you’ll also have to maneuver how to deal with blanks weeks and DGWs and hold that up against how you think those players will fare during the normal weeks.
                            I really think that this a big test for managers - and as I have seen in my MLs and OR during the past 2 years, using the chips optimally can REALLY boost your team during this period.

                        Listen to TM... he steered me in my first year last year... kept wanting to use chips earlier and he convinced to hold... went from 1.5 Million in OR and 10th in ML to 50K and won ML... cheers to TM!

                              I see, seems right. I´m a little bit worried about some players of my team. Quaner is out for this week, then RLC in doubt and Salah too, if one of them don´t play Ogbonna comes in and can work just fine but if both don´t play, then Kenny will come in and against Spurs I don´t know.

                                  Pool has good fixtures too but without Coutinho not so sure they will do that good in attack and Kun is a "must-have" until Jesus returns or Alexis comes in. Either way, I will wait for next GW to do it and see what happens in Pool x City. Thanks mate!

                        Alonso is essential... Azpi to Alonso would be the easiest and save money and have Eriksen for this Good Fixture

                        If you know you're going to be upgrading a forward soon, I wouldn't recommend sinking extra cash you may need for that upgrade into your defence.

                        Gahh, currently 280K, top 10K looking hard now, but I'll grind on. All chips bar the forced WC still available.

                        Would you rather:

                        A) Eriksen + Firmino OUT, Ibe + Kane IN (-4)
                        B) Son + Christensen* OUT, Lingard + Alonso IN (-4)
                        C) Eriksen + Naughton OUT, Lingard + Alonso IN (-4)
                        D) Save FT and go without Man Utd cover, only having captaincy options in Eriksen and Son

                        *could also replace Otamendi, and bring in Stones later.

                            Depends a bit when you bought Salah. Personally I don't think he'll play this weekend, based on nothing except the 'groin' thing. Swapping for De Bruyne for a couple of weeks might be tempting. Otherwise I would just move Mbemba to someone like Klavan, Duffy, Mee etc.
