Season Review – Team of the Season – Nemanja Vidic

Over Sir Alex Ferguson’s 24-year reign, Nemanja Vidic has arguably been his most shrewd and vital capture. Costing £7 million, Vidic has just secured his second Barclay’s Player of the Year award, featured in his fourth PFA Team of The Year and captained United to the Premier League title.

Every Fantasy Manager will be more than aware of what Vidic offers, with a hefty price tag to match his prominence in the United lineup, each season Fantasy managers are faced with weighing up the advantages of acquiring such an expensive defensive asset.

This season, such investment largely paid off. Despite United lacking the solidity of previous seasons, Vidic still managed to fetch returns that saw him soar in popularity and provide a firm foundation for his Fantasy owners.

The Statistics

At the start of the season Fantasy Managers could pick up Vidic for 7.0, a drop from his starting value of 8.0 in 2009/10. However, rising popularity saw his value climb to 8.1 by the end of the campaign – peaking at 8.2 in February and March.

Despite maintaining a strong backing from Fantasy managers, there’s no denying that the United defence had some shaky spells throughout. With Vidic present in the side, United kept 13 clean-sheets and 15 overall – a decent return, but hardly comparable to the heady heights of 2008/09’s 14 consecutive shutouts. Indeed, it wasn’t until gameweeks 17 and 18 that United put together back-to-back clean sheets.

There was also little improvement when it came to Bonus Points. Having gathered 17 Bonus in the 2008/09 season, Vidic’s return dropped to just 7 last season and this level was maintained with just 9 coming his way this term.

Clearly Vidic has somehow struggled to earn recognition amongst United’s wealth of attacking talent. Fortunately however, the United skipper increased his goal threat at set-pieces which helped him earn another very respectable points haul.

Vidic enjoyed his most prolific form in front of goal in United colours, finding the back of the net on 5 occasions in the league. He therefore ended 2010/11 with 148 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points which saw him sit comfortably in fourth overall in the defender rankings. Significantly, Vidic earned 35 more points than team-mate Patrice Evra who started the season priced at 0.5 more than his skipper.

The Prospects

With those statistics in mind, we should perhaps expect a price rise next season. A value of around 7.5 would seem likely.

Fantasy managers will be anticipating United’s clean sheet count to improve slightly, which should balance things out if Vidic fails to match this season’s goal tally. Alternative options in the United defence could count against the Serb however. Rio Ferdinand’s fitness will again be called into question and could open the way for Chris Smalling to earn more consistent starts in the back four. The right-back situation is another that will offer Fantasy managers potential – if either Fabio or Rafael cement a start in this position, they are surely set to offer strong short-term value.

The flipside is that, Evra aside, Vidic will undoubtedly be the consistent starter and performer in the United rearguard – he remains “untouchable” as those around him come and go. The question will be however, whether his assured presence in our defences justifies a weighty Fantasy fee.

Said on here yesterday I'd put everything that was left in my account at 6pm on Barca win/Villa any-time scorer at 4/1.

Thanks to Stevenage winning only 1-0 and two horses who should be glue by now, I had a whole £3 left...

The thing is, Berbatov isn't going to make an impact from the bench. The only way he could ever have come on is if we were ahead. I was suprised he didn't make the bench, but seriously he hasn't scored a goal in Europe in 20 straight games.

If he does go, we'll definitely need another striker. If Hernandez or Rooney get injured next year we could have MO leading the line 😕 Although I suppose this is where AY becomes useful...

      Sweet.. I get a £10 back 🙂

Well you picked it and right about now you should be smugly enjoying the fruits of your decision.

We asked you what Money-Back Special you wanted for the Champions League Final and you told us. Right about now that looks about as wise a choice from us as Cheryl Cole buying a place in the US for her extended stay on American X Factor, but you needn’t worry, because as Barcelona won the game in 90 minutes, we’re refunding all losing single Correct Score, 1st Goalscorer, Last Goalscorer and Scorecast bets on the match.

Our accountants are currently talking Paddy down off a ledge, so we’re not entirely sure how much it comes to in total, but figures of £3,000,000 have been mentioned. It’s comfortably the most money we’ve ever refunded on one of our Money-Back Specials and already Christmases 2011-2015 have been cancelled around the Paddy Power offices.

Refunds should be landing in accounts soon after the match, but please bear with us as the sheer size of the refund means that our monkeys at the abacuses are under severe pressure.

I agree, that celebration was rath nauseating, but considering he scored the goal every young Man U fan dreams of scoring when they go to bed at night, you can let him off.

I don't mind arrogant goal celebrations on the whole, but in big finals, you should be showing some hint of Tradelli-eque elation.

While he scored Rooney's refusal to continue to track Busquets really cost Man U. He did it for the first 20 mins, then gave up, and Busquets then went on to control the match.

Its exactly the same thing Rooney did (or didn't do, in this case) against Song when Man U played Arsenal last month. I wouldn't say I'm surprised, but I am disappointed Sir Alex made the same mistake again.

i personally don't see the offsides as a problem at all. if he's offside 5 times and offside once and scores the winner then he's done his job.
he's got 99 problems but the offsides aint 1

I think it was wrong to put Hernandez in tonight. He's a great finisher and has sublime movement in the area, but he is a luxury and no more when up against a side like Barca. He doesn't contribute, or chase the opposition enough the way someone like Rooney does.

Considering that Man U needed to press Barca high upfield, and match them in the middle, he became a waste of a body.

+1 Ferguson should have learnt from the Arsenal game. Only play Hernandez in games you expect to have equal or more possession than the opposition. He's not a make something out of nothing striker like Rooney for example

Both teams were well and truly outclassed - that's the point. There is no shame in it. And either set of fans trying to imply that the other team somehow let themselves down by being outclassed should come out looking the fool. That's all I meant. Regardless - Arsenal *did* come within a goal of knocking Barca out - it would have been an injustice mind.

I can't believe the fitness of those players. Park is United's fittest by far and he was matched by every other Barca player.

Love to see the stats on distance covered between the teams etc.

Barcelona are always going to look fitter when they're knocking the ball around for most the match and Man U are chasing.

Park looked tired when he didn't track Messi for his goal.

At the whistle, mate leaned over my shoulder and said: "is he better than Zidane" ? I used to dismiss it in a second but now I have to say I don't know, I doubt it though.

btw, Antonio Valencia broke Javier Mascherano's record of 'most fouls before a booking' tonight. 😛

I never had him down as a dirty player, but he was very lucky to stay on the pitch tonight.

i want to see a replay of hte first foul. it looked obscenely over the top but i swear he just about wins the ball cleanly enough. the rest were fouls which will inevitably look worse when you collide with a player moving at messi mph
