The FPL Bonus Points – Moving the Goalposts?

While the Fantasy Premier League player list is taking up the bulk of our time, sapping our energies and thinking – some will no doubt have noticed that Wednesday’s launch also brought several rule changes. One such tweak involved the allocation of Bonus Points. The “man in the stand” from the Press Association is no longer the “judge and jury” behind these points – from this season the FPL have gone back to a method driven by an Index, fuelled by statistics that measure player actions and team performance.

The EA SPORTS Player Performance Index (EA SPORTS PPI) will now be the recipient of our post-match wrath – although given that cold hard statistics will be behind it, it’s going to be more difficult to justify the bile.

Such a change inevitably poses some questions but for us at Fantasy Football Scout, it also gives us the opportunity to offer a new feature to offer Members a helping hand.

What is the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index?

The Premier League site offers a full explanation of this right here so we won’t go into too much detail. Effectively the index uses an algorithm to provide a single value which offers an appraisal of a player’s performance in a Premier League match. That algorithm takes into account a variety of statistics gathered from a match reflecting player actions on the pitch such as – shots, clearances, saves etc. Goals scored, assists and clean sheets are perhaps the biggest factors in the calculation of the index score but crucially, the outcome of the match is also very significant. A player in the winning team is far more likely to register a high EA SPORTS PPI score than a player on the losing side.

What does this mean for the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points?

It’s hard to say. While we are likely to have more visibility on the factors that affect the award of the Bonus Points, it’s still very difficult to predict which players will benefit next season. The fact that winning performances are crucial suggests that players amongst the top sides will be far more likely to earn big totals of Bonus Points than those turning out for struggling sides. To put this into perspective, Charlie Adam had the highest Bonus Point total in the Fantasy Premier League game last season. However, he ranked just 20th overall in the EA SPORTS PPI.

It’s also notable that, out of the top 25 EA SPORTS PPI ranked players last season, 10 of them were Man United or Chelsea players, 3 were at Man City, 2 at Liverpool and 1 at Arsenal. Charlie Adam was the only player from a relegated club in the top 30. Scott Parker – the player of the year last season – was not in the top 10 midfielders and was ranked 70th overall.

The jury is very much out on the effectiveness of the EA SPORTS PPI then but we can only really speculate on how it will distribute the FPL Bonus Points until the season is underway. One thing we’re pretty sure on – we noticed last season that goalscorers were big beneficiaries of Bonus Point awards – our guess is that this will continue with the implementation of the EA SPORTS PPI. Goalscorers on winning sides are set for regular gains then. Is that any different to the old PA Sports method? Only time will tell.

How can Fantasy Football Scout help?

At least now we know that the statistics available to our Members have a definite impact on a player’s likelihood of earning FPL Bonus Points. Our Members already have access to the statistics that contribute to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data. By interrogating last season’s data now, you can already get a view on the top performers across the statistics that matter. We will be publishing members articles to aid this process too.

As you no doubt will have heard, Fantasy Football Scout are also contributing articles to the FPL this season. “The Scout” will examine the Bonus Point allocation each gameweek and attempt to breakdown the factors behind the awards using the EA SPORTS PPI data.

We’re going to provide something new however. Something a little extra…

The Scout ICT Index – Influence, Creativity and Threat

We have a new way for Members to read and analyse statistics this season. We’ve built our own Fantasy Football Index – the Scout “ICT” Index. This measures the performance of Premier League players in three key areas – Influence, Creativity and Threat. The first of those, a player’s Influence, will use similar performance indicators to the EA SPORTS PPI via our Opta data, although our algorithm will be different.

Our index score for Influence won’t take the results into consideration and will therefore offer a level playing field to those players who suffer defeat in a match. In this way our Index will hopefully be effective at finding influential players within struggling clubs, but should still offer our Members a view on which players are more likely to score highly in the EA SPORTS PPI and therefore be in line for Bonus Points. While the FPL Bonus Points arriving “the morning after matches” – our members can get access to our ICT index once we update our data – often just 10-20 minutes after the final whistle has blown.

In basic terms the ICT index will help to make our Opta data more digestible. It will offer one single index score for Influence, one for Creativity and one for Threat. These will help to measure a player’s importance to their team and to a match, a player’s likelihood to earn assists and to score goals, or at least get in goalscoring situations. Those three figures will then be combined to create a single ICT Index score to measure a player’s overall performance contribution from a Fantasy perspective.

Index scores will be generated on a gameweek basis and cumulatively over the season. The full Opta data will still be available of course, but Members will now have an easy route to identify how players are performing across the key statistics.

The index, like any football index, will be far from perfect. There will be tweaks along the way. Plenty of discussions as we go. Even so, the ICT Index is already providing us with plenty of talking points and insight behind the scenes and we think it’s going to be a valuable addition for our Members. It will also give us plenty of material to discuss in a series of new Members articles.

We currently have the ICT Index in test and will be creating new tables and new sidebar widgets that will give Members quick access to the top performers on our Index on a gameweek basis and over the season as a whole. These widgets will also form the basis of our new dashboard available to Members when they log into the Members area.

Keep ‘em peeled for more news on this in the next few weeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Please, someone tell me:

    1. What is a "balanced" team?
    2. Why is it important?

    Thanks

A balance between players from different teams, a balance between positions, basically covering all bases as much as possible

Ok so why is that important?

In one gameweek I only care about total points, not distribution amongst players.

In one season I only care about total points, not distribution amongst gameweeks.

So I don't see the difference between 20+20+20 or 20+15+25. (In a gw.)

        similarly 50+50+50 vs 35+50+65 in 3 gws.

So what I mean is... I don't think there's any point to balancing a team. Can someone explain why?

You're right, it's not about balance for the sake of balance. My pet peeve is people advising against doubling up on a defense even when it maximises your profit for the GW.

To me a balanced team is one where you are set up with enough money in each area to allow you to jump on any bandwagon with only one transfer i.e. an expensive player in each position. If you have 3 cheap strikers, and all of a sudden one of the big guys catches fire, you'll need to take a hit to get him in.

Ah yes I agree with that, although I'm willing to take a hit for a long-term improvement, too. (or you can skip a week and use 2 transfers the next week)

I suppose balance is important for head to head leagues where consistency matters, but I don't play them... I think balanced teams just look more pleasing on the eye!

Doubling up on defence (with teams that rotate well) is probably a v good tactic but there will be weeks with no clean sheets and others with 4!

It basically means that you have a well rounded team in all areas of the park. Forvexample, you have a strong forward line without sacrificing your defence for the cost of it.

Many people have tried using the strategy of buying 5 £4.0m defenders and then spending all their money on their front 7. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. If you was to have 2-3 £10.0m+ players, and then fill all the gaps with cheap 'enablers', you're basically relying on them to perform well week-in-week-out. However, if you have a reasonable balance in all areas of your team, if one player has an 'off week' you won't feel the effect of it too much.

Of course I don't advocate using bad 4.0 players. But what about good 5.0 players who justify their value in the long run. My team is usually quite "balanced" as a by product of my only looking for players worth the money (most of these are mid pricerange) but a few years ago a lot of big guns were worth the money (rooney, drogba, lampard, ronaldo) so at that time a good team would look unbalanced.

It's good, but Huth has 3 shockers to start with so would consider putting someone else in that might chip in some points at the back early on. Slot invested for him to bench warm the first 3 weeks.

I like it. Although there are some minor details I would look into. You are doubling up on chelsea at the back, Suarez might not make the start of the season because of the Copa America and there are a lot of speculations surrounding N'Zogbia, but other than that it looks fine. Some might say 8m is a lot to pay for Yaya, but who knows....

I don't buy this whole "must have Chelsea players' syndrome. Why? Torres is rubbish and can't play together with Drogba or Anelka. Add Malouda, Kalou, Sturridge, maybe Modric and Lukaku and of course Lamps...who's going to start? I'd wait and see how AVB lines up his team first.

No not yet but the point is rooney did come out of his spell because it was a spell of bad form. Likewise torres will. Saying he's rubbish is just ridiculous. Anyway my main point is that in gw's 2 & 3 chelsea have wba & norwich at home. How are you going to feel having no chelsea attacking options for those games? Oh wait you're a utd fan...

Putting Torres in is just nuts at this point. Malouda is the wisest Chelsea option for me but even he is risky until we know AVB's thinking. Benayoun may end up the real steal. Got my eye on Alex. He should start.

Downgrade riise to Hughes, it will give you 1mil extra to maybe start with Carroll then downgrade to Suarez after, just thinking Suarez may not start the season. Other than that looks a well balanced team

you pay 1m extra for riise for a reason though, hughes unlikely to get assists/goals which riise is quite likely to get, he grabbed an assist in fulhams last game i think.

Was thinking more along the lines of the uncertainty of Suarez starting the season. He is definitely a season keeper for me thats for sure but we'll see what Kenny has in store. Like the Rodellega idea but it kind of depends on where Zogs is imo as thats where the most service will come. Early days.

I can't understand why everyone has Kompany and not Richards. Richards is just as firm at right back as Kompany is CB. And Richards gets forward and scores goals from set pieces. More than Kompany. He is more of a BP factor as well imo.

    Same price, Richards >>> Kompany

Mancini rotates his wing backs more than his CB's ,so i guess in that regard Kompany is a safer bet, also going on last season if you translate his points had he not been classified as a midfielder he did very well actually.. (hope that makes sense) 🙂

I don't see Richards as a nailed-on 30+ start man in City's back four - Zabaleta is still a factor at right-back. Kompany is surely the first name on the teamsheet however and, if he can convert his stats into Bonus Points, should see double figures in that area to go with 14-16 clean sheets.

Obviously Kompany is the man at City, but RIchards is even more entrenched at right back this season then last. Zab will really not factor as much as many think. Anyway, the only advantage is a few more starts, but every other factor favors Richards. He gets forward, he can generate assists and can score goals from the run of play and is very potent on set pieces. A much bigger threat offensively than Kompany and that's more important than the stay at home CB Kompany who is not even as dangerous as Lescott on set pieces.

        Nice.

        Things I'd worry about:
Lampard - which one is going to pitch up this season, I'd rather spend the budget elsewhere
Odem - problems with opening fixtures, but good choice for the season.
Silva - still has converted his ability into points (ala Modric), its not about how good you are - its about how many goals/assists you get

I'm kind of happy with my team at the moment, but there are a few things nagging at me.

What are people's thoughts on Rodallega? Is N'Zog worth having if he's not at Wigan where he was the focal point?

    I'm sitting with:
    Al'Habsi (Mignolet)
Kompany/Cole/Baines (de Laet/Simpson - I'm open to ideas on cheap defenders)
    Etherington/Barton/Dempsey/N'Zogbia (Sinclair)
    Zamora/van Persie/Rodallega

Ba is massive contender for a spot at the moment as well.
Is Luiz good enough cover for Cole (saves me 1.0)

My problem is I see no value in the big names (RvP is points gold when fit) - using a rough calculation of taking last season points divided by current cost I try determine the best way to spend my budget. You have VdV at 16.5 when Dempsey is getting you 19.8. Barton is one the top players at 21.8.

Anyway - doing this gets me that the best value buys this season are in defence (Baines - 22.3, Hangeland 23.7, Bardsley - 24.6 etc) Tevez is giving you 15.4 per budget point - forwards have all been overpriced in my opinion.

Any thoughts on the above (there are quite a few topics of discussion I know).

In some respects yes (e.g. I double Suarez's points, RvP played like a third of the season - when he plays he's tops, but over the course of the season you have to manage him for injuries).

I haven't checked with a fine tooth comb, but I'm using it as a guide (remember, injury proneness is a factor to consider still).

If you're into it, I guess the best method would be

(total point/time played)/price but you also need those costly players who hit big for captain and to spend your whole 100m

Value players are fantastic to have as they free up cash elsewhere, but you really need to use that cash to get yourself a few candidates for the captaincy.

You've only got RVP that you would really want to captain unless you're going to give the armband to one of your big money defender, which I wouldn't.

I think I'd reconsider Baines and look to get another big name in. I know they don't offer the same value, but you're also going to need players you can rely on to push past 2/3 points - and that's where the pricey players come into play.

I agree with what you say in principle.

Baines to me is a nailed on member of my team. For 8.0 you're getting a 'midfielder' who gets clean sheet points, there is barely any better consistent performing value in the game at the moment.

Here's my take on the pricier players
Fabregas - I would rate as decent option
Lampard - no idea how he fits into AVB's thinking, and based on last season a bit rubbish
Gerrard - no dice, getting worse as his legs go
VdV - good option when fit
Young/Nani - whose going to start, is Nani going to be beginning season Nani or end season Nani
Rooney - playing deeper this season, but a solid pick (will be picked when RvP is injured)
Tevez - good option for big points, but looking more and more of a liability to the team
Torres/Drogba - if AVB can get them working together fine, but so far I'm not convinced either will score big points
        Hernandez/Carroll - overpriced for 1 season wonders
Suarez - good player, will he be in the team at the start of the season?

Anyway - last season I did well (140th in world) by picking Dempsey/Adam/Carroll etc as captains instead of the failing big names

Well for a keeper to earn bonus they are first going to need a clean sheet and secondly they will have to rack up saves to better any defender's stats - tackles, clearances, blocks.

Under the new system I would hazard a guess that Foster would have ended the season with more Bonus but I'm not convinced we will see a huge shift away from dominant centre-backs to keepers. If United keep a clean sheet, it seems unlikely that De Gea will have been busy enough to return a stronger EA SPORTS PPI than someone like Vidic who will fetch clearances and tackles no matter what.

Thats my thinking, but if the WIN and Clean sheet influence he BPs points for the likes of Foster etc last year would have been less - compared to someone like Joe Hart.

Yes, but having a blinder as a keeper probably wont earn you 3 BPs as it did last year with likes of foster if brum lost 2-1 as no clean sheet and team loses = less weighting.

I see what you mean Evs but I'm not sure that happened all that regularly anyway - I could of course be wrong but I'm not going to check! I just don't see this new index changing the overall distribution of BP's all that much but we shall see eh

No matter how much I tinker with my team, I still keep a core group of players:

    Kompany
    O'Shea
    Duff
    Sessegnon
    N'Zogbia
    Ba

    Anyone else doing this?

I love this time of the season... so much scheming going on. Its pretty interesting reading through, and seeing players go from must haves, to completely forgotten again, right before your eyes.

    anywho..

    Hart (Given)
    Hughes, Dunne, Alcaraz, Kompany (Simpson)
    Wilshere, N'Zogbia, Malouda (sinclair, ferguson)
    RVP, Rodallega, Hernandez

This team is a little more risky (3 wigan starters ffs??) but everyone is in that team for a reason. Malouda and hernandez are probably my least favourite members tbh.

    thoughts?

i didnt do this last year because it seemed a bit of a waste of time, but hey; when in Rome...

Would you kindly take the time to rate; 1st preliminary squad subject to future transfers etc..

    Schwarzer - Given

    Baird - Hughes - Dunne - Warnock - A Cole

    Downing - VDV - Y Toure - Tarrabt - Barton

Van Persie - Hoilett - Moore

Trying to cover most bases for the first round, dont expect to make any transfers until the 3rd game so expect to make plenty of changes to this side on this basis..

Also trying to set up a complimentary set of defenders to alternate every week and AV and Fulham look alright from first impressions..?

Mcleaish is a defence first man thats why im looking at it, besides they have a great chance of getting clean sheets at home for the first 6-7 weeks of the season and i dont see them scoring a lot personally with Young and Downing now gone...

Early to be posting RMT's but thought id just get some opinon on my squad thoughts so far:

    Al-Habsi (Given)
    Samba, Kompany, A.Cole (R.Johnson, Simpson)
    N'Zogbia, Murphy, Bale, Silva (Surman)
    Zamora, Suarez, Drogba

Am v happy with GK (rotate Given in wk2/3) and DEF, pleased with MID just unsure on Bale with Wk2/3 fixtures, and am unsure on Suarez (Rest) Drogba (Rotation) Any thoughts on my side guys?

well, i have Taarabt and like you alluded too he might well be moving on but ill cross that bridge when i get to it. I might in fact just plonk Sinclair in the team for him if he does indeed move on....
