Technical Area

The Technical Area- Rooney Drops Deeper at Everton

The 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Man City has clearly had an effect. Humbled in front of their own fans, with Sir Alex Ferguson describing it as the “worst result in my history”, United’s line-up for last weekend’s trip to Goodison raised more than a few eyebrows.

The role assigned to Wayne Rooney will have many a Fantasy manager fretting. With Fergie seeking extra solidity, Rooney dropped into central midfield, allowing Javier Hernandez to lead the line as the lone frontman but, ahead of a favourable run of fixtures, it’s the last thing his Fantasy owners want to contemplate. Tonight’s Champions League line-up against Otelul Galati will only further deepen the concern, with Rooney once again selected in the United midfield, with Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov leading the line. We take a look at Rooney’s last two league games to see just how they differ:

Average Position

A look at Rooney’s average position in the City game (above) shows Rooney’s (10) tendency to drop deep, even when United play 4-4-2. With City so much in control, though, Danny Welbeck (19) was also deep- both Ashley Young (18) and Nani (17) stayed high and wide and with a far from compact shape, United were torn apart by their clinical opponents.

The Everton match (above) shows Rooney was, on average, in an almost identical position when in possession, despite his new midfield role. The main difference, though, is how this compares in relation to the team mates around him. There is no width, no players further forward- Hernandez (14) dropped deep when on the ball and is obscured by Rooney (10) here. United’s defence-minded outlook offered little ahead of Rooney for him to make any significant attacking contribution.

Passing

Against City, Rooney made a total of 57 passes. A look at the chalkboard again shows how he came deep to link with the midfield, with 47% of all passes coming in the middle of the central third of the pitch. Remarkably, this is almost identical to the Everton match; here, Rooney also makes 57 passes, with 49% coming in the same area.

It’s when you look at the other areas of the field that the difference is more substantial; against City, for example, 28% of Rooney’s passes were from positions on the flank. With Young and Nani providing plenty width, he had far less a tendency to move from the centre in comparison to his display at Goodison- 38% of his distribution came from the wings against David Moyes’ side as he sought space in order to make an impact.

The most significant area for Rooney, though, the centre of the final third, shows a definite decrease in attacking potential over the two games. Against City, 22% (13% + 4% + 5%) of Rooney’s passes came in this vital area as he prompted and probed, looking for openings- against Everton, Rooney’s impact in this crucial part of the field halved, down to 11% (7% +4%). With Fergie reining in his star forward’s attacking sensibilities, their potency clearly diminished.

A look at United’s preferred passing in each game is also instructive. Against City, Rooney received 15 passes from Welbeck- the most balls from any team mate- and played 6 passes to his fellow-forward- a total of 21 passes between the United frontmen.

In the Goodison game, though, it was a different matter; Rooney received more passes (7) from Jonny Evans than any other United player, with Phil Jones and Patrice Evra next best on 6; an indication of how deep he dropped to gain possession at times. Ahead of him, Rooney barely linked up with Hernandez at all; he played just 2 successful passes to the Mexican, receiving 3 in return. Compare that to the interplay with Welbeck against City, and there’s a definite drop in attacking intent.

Match Stats

Post-match, Fergie explained the thinking behind his decision to move Rooney back:

It’s about time we won 1-0. That was the aspect of the game that pleased me most, that and restricting Everton to very few chances. We had to do something about the fact that opponents have been getting too many opportunities to score against us in recent weeks. We knew we had to reduce that number if we are going to win the league, and reinforcing the midfield was one way of doing it. We brought Wayne back to increase our numbers in midfield.

Perhaps a look at the statistics will make the United boss think twice, though. In no way did his side restrict Everton’s chances: over the season so far, they have averaged 19 shots against per game- on Saturday, Everton fired in 19 goal attempts again. If anything, his tactics only had a detrimental effect on his own side’s endeavors going forward- United have averaged 16 shots per game so far this season, whereas at Goodison last weekend, they mustered 7 all game.

Indeed, David De Gea saved more shots (8) than United managed over the entire ninety minutes. From a central midfield position, Rooney had just 1 shot against his old club- not what you’d want from a 12.2 Fantasy prospect, particularly with the likes of Robin Van Persie tearing up the top-flight right now.

Clearly, Fergie holds no fears of utilising Rooney in a different role if he feels it’s beneficial to the team as a whole- a spell out wide a couple of seasons back proves testament to that. The uncertainty has clearly had an effect- so far, Rooney has been sold on by 72,000 Fantasy managers this week, despite a home clash with Sunderland up next. Tonight’s performance will give his 41% of Fantasy owners plenty to mull over- another game from deep without any attacking rewards could cause many to rethink over the forthcoming international break.

That 6-1 defeat has made Fergie secure the defence first before sorting the attack......a good time to buy Man U defenders I reckon......
But they'll still score, but maybe not as many......you only need to score more.

    Hey Guys,

I'm pretty new to the Fantasy EPL and any suggestions on improvements on my team would be great!

    Vorm (Kenny)
Clichy R Taylor Wilkinson Enrique (Simpson)
    Nani VDV Silva (Dyer, Ferguson)
    Suarez Rooney Adebayor

I was considering Suarez, Nani, Dyer OUT for Van Persie, Drenthe & Ramsey IN but worried getting rid of Nani in the upcoming fixtures could come back to haunt me!!

Ade seems to be a 'burst' player.....not consistent enough for me.....you must have RvP.....maybe downgrade Clichy to be able to get RvP.

Yeah agreed. However I thought Adebayors fixtures were better in the next few weeks. I was thinking of maybe downgrading clichy to Evans but not sure if he would play enough now Vidic is back. Do you have any other suggestions of decent cheap defenders?

I'd try and upgrade Fergie to a midfielder that actually plays before worrying about Dyer.

And I'd say that your 3 proposed ins would collectively outscore the outs comfortably enough to make it worthwhile shipping Nani.

    Hi guys,

just wondering if having adebayor is enough cover for Tottenham? or do i need VDV as well?

that's because to bring in VDV i will need to go agbon -> graham and petrov -> VDV

should i take the hit? 😀

No need to bring in Nani.

I'd definitely work hard to get VDV in. A good cheap striker won't score all that much less than Agbonlahor, but VDV could triple petrov's score over the next few weeks.

Oh boy, how to make this question as concise as possible...

After the international break I will have come into some funds (Nani --> 6.5ish mid, undecided)

Do I spread it around (Shawcross to P.Jones & Suarez to Aguero)

Or do I load it up front (Shawcross to W.Brown & Sturridge to Aguero)

    Option 2 gives me:
    Vorm,Krul
    Enrique, Simpson, Barnett, Wilkinson, Brown
    VDV, Silva, Ramsey, B.Johnson, Larsson
    RVP, Suarez, Aguero

Interesting. I already have sturridge currently, so it would just be Suarez to Aguero, then make B.Johnson someone like Walters or Drenthe.

However, I can anticipate the regret already. B.Johnson is easy to bench. Sure I'll miss some points (e.g. 9pts this weekend), but my front 7 is easy to pick. Maybe I'm over-estimating the difficulty of benching Ramsey, Walters or Larsson on any given week, but I can see myself kicking myself more often than if I have a cheapie to bench.

        Irrationality, i know...

Rooney: I can play anywhere (http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2011/Nov/Wayne-Rooney-I-can-play-anywhere.aspx)

Sir Alex: "I thought he was fantastic in central midfield, I really did," praised Sir Alex. "His awareness of people around him, his choice of passing was very, very good. He did really well for us tonight. It's difficult to say how Wayne would play in another Champions League game but I'd be confident playing him there."

    CHelski - missing Essien.
Spurs - have Parker/Modric/vdv. Looking good.
    man C - have Yaya.
Liv - have Adam. Future looks ok.
    Newcastle - Tiote/Cabaye.

I may be biased but I just think that it is the worst arsenal side for a long long time and am obviously very happy about that.. RVP is covering up the cracks. Roy Keane was brilliant, as was scholes. Chelsea are a different team without Essien, he is hard working.

Would love to see Essien or Wesley go to United. They need the cover because Ferdinand and Evans are shite lol

Vdv will go down in folk law history in my opinion, legend in the making. Sometimes he doesnt even look fit, but he turns out the results week after week

Just ran a couple of heatmaps comparing Rooney's passing against Everton (i.e. the same as SirP uses above) and against Bolton, when he scored a hattrick... interesting results:

Percentage of passes in his own half
    Everton: 35%
    Bolton: 32%

Percentage of passes in final third
    Everton: 32%
    Bolton: 28%

Percentage of passes through in centre in final third
    Everton: 11%
    Bolton: 16%

So, not much difference in this respect, and yet Rooney bagged a hattrick in the Bolton game.

I tried to save the chalkboards but it won't let me for some reason. I'm signing out for a bit now, but will leave you with this thought: Wayne Rooney scores goals, regardless.

      a) If I had to choose between the two I would go aguero, plus he was benched last night (I think) so could be a good move for this GW

b)I'm tempted to move out Gut to Drenthe this week but I'm going to hold off and keep two trfs for next week.. (I hope he doesn't go crazy this GW)

      c) not sure about Man U's defense set up at the moment so personally would wait and see

I'd say Rooney to Aguero for sure. But if Roon starts upfront you might be kicking yourself.

Long term Drenthe for NDyer looks like a good move but Evertons fixture looks tricky this GW.

Cant really see Rooney not picking up a decent score v Sunderland (so will Aguero though).

So probably my back 3 will be Simpson-Woodgate-Brown, and between Woodgates injury record and Browns fixture, I say I am heading for at least one 0 from the back 3.

Yes, I can see lots of hatricks and 2 goal games for Gervinho whilst RVP draws blanks.

Oh well, each to their own I guess. Another poster who asks you to rate his team then immediately gets all defensive when you point out areas that they may want to look at improving.

Makes you wonder why they bother to ask you to rate their team at all in the first place?

May as well just say, yes its a wonderful looking team that I can find nothing wrong with.

Stupid talk about rooney being the new scholey going on. He can play anywhere and still be good but hes best used upfront.

SAF asked if rooney's new role is TEMPORARY:

"Yes, I think so. We're just trying to organise our midfield a little bit. We've had injuries in that department. Michael Carrick's still injured, Tom Cleverley's still injured and we're spacing out Darren Fletcher's games. "

Maybe I'll be proved wrong, but I get a feeling that lots of people who have rushed to ship out Rooney will be regretting it soon.

I suppose they figured on selling him high and, if they need him back, buying him low?

Rooney has dropped quite a bit in the last few weeks and RvP has gone the other way.

IF RvP has another good game (likely) and IF Rooney has another average game (not unlikely) i can imagine that quite a few people think that they needed to pull the trigger now and do a straight swap before the break.

otherwise getting RvP in will mean Rooney + having to make another change in DEF or MID.

I dont have Rooney. and now i dedice to buy RVP instead of him
i think after international break, price of RVP will > Rooney
and i still change RVP -> Rooney if i need, and get some more money extra 😀
a very good move, you idiot say it's a stupid talk 😀

Grr! Taarabt went down again last night.

Was hoping he'd avoid the price drop between now and Friday as I didn't want to use any transfers this week so that I'd have 2 frees for the International break.

I'll probably keep him for a while longer now though. Lost enough money on him anyway plus after the break he has some decent games (Stoke, Norwich, WBA) that he might do something in.

Don't really see any transfers worth making this week so will just have to play one of my bench defenders (prob Naylor) instead of Kompany and be done with it.

I'd get rid ASAP. He has had 'easy' fixtures already and done nothing. Nothing to suggest he will improve.

People like Sess, Ramsey, Walters are all looking good with good fixtures coming up. Could be worth a punt (Though Sess you could hold out on for a week for sure)

Yeah, if he's looking like going down in price again then I don't mind getting rid, but hopefully he won't drop again between now and the end of this weeks deadline so that I don't have to make any moves this week.

However, having stuck with him for this long and having a decent 5th mid (B Johnson) its not a pressing issue. Moneys lost on him already so I'd rather keep him till at least next gw and if I need to get him out of there then I'll have 2 frees to do it with which broaden my options.

Not exactly like I'm struggling in FPL this year, is it!

Toss up between team 2 and 3, depends who will score more, suarez + clichy or adebayor + raylor,
I would say team 3,but suarez has tough fixtures coming up so you could also look at some alternatives like adebayor even for suarez

      i'd take 2 but change:

      Clichy > cheaper

and Ferguson > somebody with half a chance of playing when you really need use your bench.

      Team 3.

Then next week, boot Suarez for Sturridge and upgrade Ferguson/Drenthe/Ramsay in that order.

I am struggling with my last transfer

    Sturridge-> Welbeck/ Bendter/ Agbonlarhor ?????????

or leave Sturridge there, and replace Bosingwa with Jones??????

    Already did Petrov to Ramsey.

I have no Man U coverage at this point, and see Welbeck as a bargain if Roon pig is kept in the mid

    Cheers in advance guys..

Tough one I'd maybe leave it a week. Bos and Sturridge are both up against a weak B'burn team and could score big this week despite their current form.

I'm guessing you have 2 frees. So if you leave one then it will be added to next weeks one. It will be nice for an international break
