Digest

The Digest- Gameweek Thirteen

The Tottenham juggernaut rolled on relentlessly at the Hawthorns, once again providing Fantasy managers with plenty of attacking options to consider. Newcastle showed their steel at Old Trafford and now have their sights set on Chelsea, ahead of a kind run of upcoming fixtures…

The Player

For the past few weeks, the vast majority of the Tottenham focus had been on Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale as the midfield duo racked up the Fantasy points. When fit, the Dutchman’s consistency is never in question but Bale’s continually impressive returns presented many Fantasy managers with a quandary- acquiring both players seemed a viable proposition, given the club’s run of fixtures.

Saturday’s win at West Brom brought Emmanuel Adebayor firmly into our thinking once again. The Togo international had drifted off the radar slightly after a six game scoring drought but a brace against Aston Villa last Monday was followed by another double at the Hawthorns- in the space of five days, then, Adebayor bagged as many league goals as Luis Suarez has all season.

Harry Redknapp’s acquisition of both Adebayor and Scott Parker has turned Tottenham into one of the most lethal attacking sides in the Premier League- of the ten games the duo have played, the club have won nine and drawn one. Adebayor has now returned more Fantasy points than both Van der Vaart and Bale and is the sixth top scorer in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with 75 points- priced at 8.8, he still looks a bargain right now.

A closer look at his points sums up his consistency- only twice in those ten appearances has Adebayor failed to either score or assist and with Spurs’ upcoming schedule still looking promising- added to a double gameweek 20- a move for all three of the Tottenham “Holy Trinity” over the next couple of weeks doesn’t seem such a bold move after all.

The Team

While there’s little doubt they led a charmed life at Old Trafford on Saturday, the bottom line is that Newcastle came through unscathed. Many had expected a result similar to the previous week’s trip to the blue half of Manchester but Alan Pardew’s side clung on and remain in the top four.

This week’s home clash with Chelsea should hold little fear for Newcastle; with that 3-1 defeat at City their only loss, a defeat to Andre Villas-Boas’ side would be a far bigger shock that we could have possibly perceived at the beginning of the season. Yohan Cabaye’s guile and steel, Demba Ba’s goals and Gabriel Obertan’s pace and directness have added to the solid foundation and work-ethic already in place and Newcastle look ripe for Fantasy investment once again after what many had expected to be a tricky three-match period.

With Hatem Ben Arfa returning from fitness, a defence that has conceded just 12 goals this season and includes, in the shape of Ryan Taylor, the second-top scoring FPL defender, there are plenty of options available ahead of a run of four games that sees Pardew’s side face (nor, SWA, WBA, bol). Ba, in particular, should see plenty of Fantasy managers acquiring his services for that stretch- similar to Emmanuel Adebayor, he’s proven to be one of the most consistent Fantasy performers this season, scoring or assisting in seven of his previous eight gameweeks and at 6.8 continues to offer outstanding value.

The Talking Point

Yesterday’s off-field events concerning Gary Speed put everything into perspective. At times, football can bring unbridled happiness and fuel the passion of millions around the globe but Speed’s untimely death served a harsh reminder that, essentially, it’s really nothing more than twenty-two men kicking a ball about a patch of grass.

Clean sheets and points accrued have never seemed so insignificant with the news of the Welshman’s heartbreaking passing. Swansea took the decision to play their game against Aston Villa but with many of the protagonists clearly affected, the game itself seemed a secondary matter, dwarfed by the horrifying circumstances that had gone before….

The action moved on to Anfield, where Roberto Mancini adopted a far more conservative approach than many had expected. We can only speculate, but the previous day’s result at Old Trafford may have affected the City manager’s thinking. With a draw at Liverpool enough to preserve a five point advantage over United, Mancini adopted a 4-5-1, with Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko both benched.

Their attacking edge blunted, City were fortunate to escape with a draw; their average shots per away dropped significantly, Sergio Aguero could barely get into the game and in the end, only Joe Hart’s heroics kept their unbeaten record intact. The decision to rein in their attacking tendencies almost backfired yesterday and Fantasy managers will be hoping Mancini banishes such notions with immediate effect.

With 9 goals in his previous ten games, Balotelli was City’s form striker coming into this game and his frustration boiled over when Mancini finally introduced him to the proceeding halfway through the second half. Two yellows in quick succession saw him dismissed- he will now miss the Carling Cup match with Arsenal tomorrow evening.

In a sense, this could even boost Balotelli’s chances of a start against Norwich next weekend; with Dzeko likely to start against the Gunners on Tuesday evening, the Italian will be the fresher of the two come the weekend. City’s crucial Champions League home clash with Bayern Munich next midweek could also play a part in Mancini’s thinking, though- Sergio Aguero seems the likeliest starter of the trio against Paul Lambert’s side and a viable captaincy option, at that.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        It would be:
        Vidic - Baines - Simpson - Taylor(Swan) - Wilkinson

I want Baines, definitely, but looking at the fixtures I can just see clean sheet after clean sheet for United and Vidic will chip in with the odd goal here and there, plus his PPI is usually pretty good. It would be a right old gamble, but tempting nonetheless.

It's a lot of money for two defenders, but I can only see handsome returns from them both until the next WC. Each I think will have a 5-7 ppg return over that period.

Your plan would give a fantastic run of fixtures, but it would be hard to take Baines out if he's performing is my opinion.

I almost had both of them last week. Was going to do Kompany > Vidic, stuck with Kompany and got Santos in in the end. With Adebayor and Sturridge/Ba giving decent value up top and nobody really firing in midfield I think it's certainly justifiable to have both Vidic and Baines.

Nice. Have you hit confirm on that 8 pointer? I think you'll get those 8 points back this week alone.

My three last week were lovely stuff:
Rooney, Nani & Bego (4 pointer) OUT
      Hernandez, Larsson & Vorm IN

Love it when a hit pays off. 😀

Wowwww nice! Yeah I hit confirm yesterday, saw Bale was going up so I thought what the hell!! Very excited for the weekend now too, feel spoilt for choice over who to captain 🙂

Not gonna lie, you saying how much you liked it made me click a long with everyone else being super supportive haha. I remember there was a guy last year called "Just one more 8 pointer" and he was seeing returns every single week and he took 4 "8 point hits" in a row. Now THAT is how to play the game 🙂 God knows what his team value was?!

Any thoughts for upgrading my midfield? Might ship out Moses or Ramsey.

Would appreciate some thoughs from the morning crowd...

    Team for next week is:

    Vorm BLA (A)

    Shawcross EVE (A) / Jones AVL (A) / Assou-Ekotto BOL (H)

    Bale BOL (H) / Drenthe STO (H) / Nani AVL (A) / Silva NOR (H)

    Van Persie WIG (A) / Adebayor BOL (H) / Bendtner WOL (A)

Thinking of a replacement for shawcross, got 0.6m in the bank.

Want to keep enough in the bank to do bendtner -> Ba for GW16

At Ba’s current price I could do shawcross -> jags which would leave me exactly 0.4 needed to get Ba, only if Ba doesn’t rise in price by then.

Also considering Hibbert, other good alternatives 5m and under that would leave me enough room for a potential Ba price rise?

Ba will prob rise. He's at 31% at the mo. I'm actually shipping Komps out next gw. Man City do not keep cleanies that well, and my offensive returns will be more than if I were to keep him. I'm doing Graham and Komps >> Ba and 4.8 def

i dont know how to get rid of woodgate so it seems like i will loose money on him in a while.

He may very well be the best GK for 5.5
But the thing is, you shouldn't be paying 5.5 for a keeper, especially when you can play Vorm each week for more than what a 5.5 keeper will get you.

Someone said yesterday it may be a good idea to give BenArfa a little while, make sure he's the real deal not just on a high after Injury. He is a good shout tho. Suarez has been the source of frustration for me and I got rid 2 weeks ago, mainly to fund Nani in as part of Man Utds resurgence (its coming ha!!!). You can use Vorm as your No.1 GK, he's bee great value, and get in, say Ruddy. Thats a massive 1.5m to throw into the pot. Thats what I'd do mate. Once I get my side sorted for xmas/champions league break, i'll be looking at getting rid of Hennessay and upgrading perhaps Ba as he's off tp the African cup

i really wanna get suarez in yet again since everyone get rid of him and if he have 1 good day he could score hattrick so easily, and Livpools fixure will be great as well

if ben arfa is a risk...wich cheap MF i should go for?5.5M will be my limit for mildelfilder

    Hey folks, hypothetical question

    1) Mata + Ba
    2) O'Hara + Adebayor + 2m

I quite like the idea of having Mata + VDV + Silva in the midfield and Ba is looking pretty consistent.

On the other hand Adebayor could outscore Mata and with the extra 2m I could upgrade elsewhere. Not sure if O'Hara will match/better Ba in points though.

    What do you guys think?

Anybody read the Times Arsenal/Fulham synopsis yesterday? This was a quote from Szczesny (hehe esier to say than spell!):

"really weird" that Van Persie failed to score "people who have him in fantasy football teams must be gutted"

I've not come across footballers talking fantasy before...I wonder if it had anything to do with people e-mailing and twittering Gervinho with regards to the phantom assist...maybe it made it a topic of conversation in the dressing room? 🙂

To be honest, if you're thinking about WCing then you aren't happy with your team. So I would suggest an 8 point hit to put you into a fresher state of mind 🙂

As I took an 8 pointer to get those same 2 players in I'd support you no end 😀

if i do it now, i just have enough cash. another 0.1 on either price tag and it's no dice.

it would give me a starting line up of:

        Vorm
        Baines, BAE, Enrique
        Bale, Walters, Sess, Silva
        RvP, Ade, Ba

found this on an evrton forum:

Greetings from Alicante, the last place where Drenthe played (Hercules C.F.).

I must say that this guy is simply a chld with a lot of money and not much brain. I hope you don´t suffer what we had to suffer here with is guy that was earning 2kk euros (net) per season.
Just a few months before being hired he was stopped at 4a.m for the police driving at 140 km/h jumping red lights.
The only sad people in Alicante are the Casino owners who earned a lot of money with him
Parties in his house and outside were constant (and appeared in the news papers), even whenever he said he was injured and couldn´t play which was the last 4 months
Whenever the club stopped him paying him for 2 months, he decided not to come back from Christmas holidays and appeared some weeks later

Well, the list of stories of this guy is enormous, the funny thing is that on the first months he was treated here as an idol, not like in Real Madrid where it was treated more like a clown (for things like this):

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXD9DXOE-Nk&feature=player_embedded

So, your coach has a lot of work to do,... he is quick, and has a good shot, but,...

          Good luck.

your welcome mate, its a funny clip no? trying to read between the lines, with Moyes singing the praises of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, it doesn't look good for Drenthe at the moment...could be wrong, pure speculation of course, but as things stand I may well get rid of him for the weekend...
