The ScoutCast – Episode 69 – Bye Bye Baby

With a stork delivery just around the corner, I drag Mark, nappies and all, into the studio for one more ScoutCast before the little time thief bundle arrives.

Keeping my distance, despite getting over the worst of my stinker that had me bed-ridden last week, I find time to lament my latest “miffed”, torment Mark about his belated sale of Victor Moses and gloat just a little about closing the mini-league gap via Clint Dempsey’s haul.

The regulars are all present and partially correct, delivered in husky tones, fuelled by Lemsip. Other cold cures are available. Other chaotic Fantasy Football podcasts aren’t.

for this week only Dzeko is a better option. for the next few weeks, Aguero is better as he performs better at home, esp against teams lower down the table, which is why people want City coverage right now and the away games are a little tougher. Plus with Mario out Aguero is on pens. Thus if money is not an object, get Aguero.

          No, he didn't.
Milner has taken one penalty, against Liverpool, 4 minutes after Aguero went off.
Aguero one also, against Newcastle when both of them were out there.

Yeh I'm like the idea of Dzeko this week then possibly doing a straight swap for Augero on my WC week after, home form/pens with mario out defiantly swing it.

For some reason I just never consider Zamora? have noticed his name being mentioned a lot this week on here, really like the idea of Welbeck too! - might just bottle it and wait to see what the captain poll says, all good picks

        cheers guys.

I think options right now are so limited that people are considering risky punts they wouldn't normally make. Specifically, no FPL history, either at their current club or ever in the PL. Decisions based more off hype than history. That's not to say they can't succeed, it's to say that given current information they are not the best transfer. Wait and learn!

    I'm thinking:
    Taiwo
    G Cahill
    Onuoha
    Cisse

Even as a Gooner I would place Ox in the same category. What, one match? If you follow Arsenal, you're used to the hype around the newest young thing (largely because the team desperately needs improvement).

Get the smelling salts 😉 These could all come good (with the exception I reckon of Ireland who DOES have considerable FPL history and seems rather average to me). But you got to make them prove themselves to you! Have standards! 😀

don't see much better at his price range (who's nailed on otherwise it'd be Barfa) aprat from maybe Setrov. Ox would be a 1 week only deal, but he's not guaranteed to play whiich is why I may go for Park instead.

I know Ireland is in the 5.0 range - the alternatives apart from Barfa are Sigurdsson (same problem - little history to go on), Eagles (but it is Bolton) and maybe Cleverley when he finally recovers. Perhaps he is the best option in a very bad price bracket.

Make a decision on Ox after the cup match ... could be a better 1 week punt than Park

If the plan looks boring you probably have a pretty sensible team with most players safe keepers (as people always say, generic) so a calculated risk in that context can't be objected to!

I really fear for people taking 3+ gambles in their WC team... many don't have another WC, this is their last chance to build a sensible lineup, it's only going to get messier from here as injuries and form surprise. Having taken too many hits earlier in the season chasing silly short termers (Balo, Eagles, Drenthe, Barfa, Dzeko) I'm setting myself a policy now that the number of planned transfers I have will be half of the available transfers for the rest of the season (ie. 7-8 in the next 15 GWs).

I'd lose Adfe, I know they have Wigan next, but he's done nothing for a while and then his fixtures go bad. I'd downgrade one of Sess or Walters and do Ade ➡ Aguero. I'd also swap Boyata for Kelly, Senderos, Brown, Taiwo or Caulker.

Watching that Liverpool game today, and many recently, I'm just not sure how we keep on winning these big games

The team is riddled with mediocrity. I don't think Jordan Henderson would even get in the Sunderland team these days to be honest

Carroll needs to go on a military boot camp or something and then out on loan. He was puffing and panting after about a three minute sub appearance against Man City, he looks so sluggish, and he seems to have so much bulk that he struggles to out jump any normal defender. Even when he wins a ball in the air his first touch is CRIMINAL. He never has the ball under control and his awareness is shocking

Adam's gone totally off the boil and Downing has no final deliverable. Obviously Gerrard's just coming back but it really looks like he's permanently lost something - really can't do those surging runs anymore

Good goal by Kuyt today but I think that might have been his first shot/header on target for about six months, and Maxi was just garbage.

Suarez, Bellamy and the back line are the only performers I'd say. The rest you could replace with any mid table gash and there wouldnt be a significant difference

I agree that Suarez, Bellamy and defence are playing best, but I don't think it's an accident Pool play well against the big guns - Kenny has built a very solid team. Workmanlike and low scoring, but hard to beat. And I think there's a huge amount of potential there which is still working towards end product. It's not surprising that they aren't clicking entirely, he's transformed the team with what seems like 4 or 5 new players in the XI. Yet I would say your passing is very good on its day. I really rate Henderson's potential as a distributor, I think Adam reminds me of Gerrard when on form (but too many long balls are risky) and Downing does have a great record for assists before he came here. If you keep the same team it could develop into a monster.

I get what you're saying, but how long a period of development do they need? We've been fielding a pretty stable team for six months now, and too many players just aren't doing the business

We just don't have the attacking quality. That's why we can nick the games against good teams that play open and too try and beat us, but we all too often can't get through against the teams who play tight and organised. We are one of the lowest scoring teams in the league!

Maybe Downing could/should come good, but he has ZERO assists in the PL this season. Henderson is a Carrick-esque play breaker, sideways passer, Kuyt is a work horse.

Should never have sold Xabi or Bennayoun. When those two, Gerrard and Torres were firing a few seasons ago when we were putting four past Real and the like the football was unbelievable

Selling Xabi was a monumental mistake, I agree. Probably the worst decision of Rafa's career, in terms of impact. He was a brilliant passer, the type that really got between the lines with his through balls.

Obviously you guys have fallen back a long way. It's just that generally when I watch Pool I like the passing and movement (pass and move being one of your mottos...). You're right when you say you can't beat the small teams because they don't open up. Once again it comes back to Xabi, you need players that can play between the midfield and defence lines. Watching the 0-0 draws you've had, the opponents just sit with two closely spaced lines of four and you can't go through them. You end up fruitlessly going through the flanks. Unfortunately Adam doesn't seem like a through ball merchant and Downing works the flanks.
Ironically, I think Mata would have been perfect for you.

I think that was a very poor decision and a bad precedent to set to have no handshakes at the QPR Chelsea game today

Sport, and good sportsmanship, should always be able to bring people together, build bridges, set a good example and instill good values.

Irrespective of what actually happened, a showing of genuine apology/good feeling would have done wonders for both teams and the Premier League, and would have helped to difuse any ill feeling between the fans

But you should still set a good example to those watching. Even if it wasn't sincere for themselves, for all the fans and kids watching the values and principles of the game and sport in general should have been upheld

the same goes for the Bridge Terry incident a couple of years ago. Fair enough, you may hate the guy, but for the good of the game, your club, and your fans you should observe the fair protocol

same goes for the liverpool fans booing Evra today as well. That was well off. Football and the spirit of the game should transcend matters off the field

Took 10 weeks or something didn't it. They just let it drag and drag, and that lets the story grow. Same is happening in the Terry case. I wish they would make a judgment call and get the decision out of the way early, his continued captaincy and playing for England is absurd with this hanging over his head.

    It's a conundrum:

    Clichy & Enrique

    or

    Bad K & Evans ( or similar 4.5 stocking filler )

City - great defence, good fixtures short and long term. Clichy not 100% guaranteed starter but decent stats.

United - poor form, injuries to key players, Evans a bit bobbins but great fixtures and strong at home.

Liverpool - shocking short-term but brilliant long term fix. Mixed form. Donkey and Vole in feeble attack.

Anyone care to offer an opinion on my Nani/Rooney conundrum? I have both and don't really want to wildcard until next week, so what to do with them this week? 0.0m in the bank and only 1 freebie, so it appears the options are:

    a) Nani -> Valencia, and play 4-4-2
    b) Rooney -> any striker, probably either Zamora/Aguero/Dzeko/Welbeck/Bent, and play 4-3-3
    c) A combo of the above for a 4 point hit, and play 3-4-3. This also brings more expensive mids into the equation like Silva, Gerrard etc. Seems silly to take a hit the week before a wildcard, but I'm very tempted as I don't see any returns from my bench. Cheers in advance.

do not take a hit before your wildcard. you only have one week to make up the 4 points.

I know what you mean, and I'm usually against hits - think I've taken about 3 this year. I'll wait until the team sheets are available for the MUN games on Tues, but if Rooney and Nani are both out then I'd kinda fancy a gamble on say Silva/Gerrard outscoring Simpson by 4 points this week, so will be tempted to take a 1 week punt!

If you're going to WC next week and you can field a team with one transfer for GW23 then a hit probably isnt worth it

Nani is probably more likely to be out than Rooney, plus Valencia is looking very tasty so I would do A, then start Rooney on the off chance. First sub is difficult though. Somehow I fancy Swanse at home to chelsea as a better CS chance than NewC away to Blackburn

Hmm, see my reply above to BKerr1. 1st sub would either be Simpson (bla) or Reo-Coker (ARS) and I wouldn't fancy much from either of them. Since we'll know the MUN starting 11 before the deadline, if Rooney and Nani are both confirmed out, is it worth taking the hit?

I have a similar problem with Nani and Jones, and I'm just wildcarding. I do still have one in hand, but either way I figure if changes need making and you're considering taking a hit, you might as well just hit the wildcard button and make them all now. If you're worried about your Spurs, I'd say you can keep for this week and transfer out later; Ade can go and BAE later as well if you want, but I don't see the problem with holding him despite the fixtures.

Yeah I also have my other wildcard too, but I feel that as I've held off this long, 1 more week is not too much longer to wait, given how different my teams would be if I wildcarded this week instead of next week. Having the benefit of knowing the MUN team news before the deadline also makes waiting a bit easier. I'm hopeful Rooney will play, but if not then I may just have to play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 for one week (or take a hit!)...

      C) actually. If you pick your striker and big mid wisely you could easily outscore bench def + 4pts.

That's what I was thinking. If Rooney and Nani are both confirmed out before the deadline (which we'll know in time), then someone like Silva/Gerrard/Valencia could easily outscore Simpson/Reo-Coker by 4 or more points....

          Simpson (?) + Reo (?) > big mid (?) + striker (?) -4pts

Lose Sorenson yes, but keep Santon! That transfer will make your defence worse. Santon is a quality player, and Tiote is coming back to improve the defence. Swansea have bad fixtures and are conceding more often.

Got to say, I feel quite sorry for de Gea. As a fellow goalie (albeit at massively different levels) I know that confidence plays such a massive part. Its a viscious cycle. You start thinking more and more about the consequences of a f*ck up, and less and less concentrating on the game, then you're more likely to make a mistake etc etc

The thing is, him and Lindegard are pretty much the same age? I don't think he can say with any certainty that he'll ever be number one for Man U again as its not as if its grooming a young guy to take over a guy approaching the twilight of his career

I don't think I'd ever subscribe to the notion that the EPL is the best league in the world, but its definitely a different game, and I just don't think De Gea has the physicallity or mentality for it. Yet.

If you can't grow a proper beard/stubble, then just go clean shaven. Otherwise you're opponents just think you look like a thirteen year old boy that hasn't shaven for five months going to PE

your right, De Gea needs to do his trade as a stand in for Lindegaard who has more experience in the premier league. In time De Gea will be the number 1 but its too soon for him right now. Once De Gea gets a bit bigger, tougher and gains more experience he will be number one

I am guessing you have 2FT available? If so you would have difficulty choosing who to sub out. Possibly Sturridge for Ba? gives you a nice bench option as he may not start straight away. It also saves you from making the same transfer in a few weeks

And I had to do without Ba for four weeks for that sh*t!?

Not chuffed. The worst of it is, his earlier than expected return, and his slower than expected fall in value, means I now can't afford to get him back.

Have been WCing this week and picking up those precious price rises. Now I actually need to start thinking about the bloody team I want!

Which cheap teams do you fancy for CS for the rest of the season?

I'm thinking (in order): Sunderland, Stoke, Newcastle, Swansea, Fulham. QPR wait and see.
