The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Robin Red Faced

“He is an exceptional player and when you feed him in the box, he’s deadly.”

You see, we kind of knew all that. We realised that, against Blackburn, particularly a Blackburn reduced to ten men after half an hour, Van Persie had the tools to destroy them and deliver massive returns. The problem Mr Wenger, is that on Friday afternoon you uttered this…

“I will rotate a little bit because many players have given a lot…[With Van Persie] the temptation is there.”

That was news to us Fantasy managers. That put the frighteners on and, despite our attempt this morning to deconstruct that statement and put up arguments against the idea of resting Van Persie, some took action. Indeed, two of the top four ranked Fantasy Premier League managers opted to give the armband to Sergio Aguero – perhaps oblivious to Wenger’s threats, but more likely as a result of them.

The very idea of us, a site dedicated to passing information to Fantasy Football managers, ignoring the quotes from Wenger was never a viable option. We turned a blind eye to Friday’s Sun report, but when Wenger speaks, we had to report it. So, to counter that, in this morning’s Preamble, we stressed the need to keep faith with Van Persie and hope that Wenger resisted the gamble. Hopefully, that helped some in their decision to sit tight.

Is there a lesson to be learned? Certainly the fact that Van Persie remained on the pitch to provide an assist to Thierry Henry with the score at 6-1, indicates that the idea of resting Van Persie didn’t cross Wenger’s mind once the goals started flowing. Had Van Persie been tiring, had he been desperate for a break – why was he left on the pitch when the match was dead and buried?

Only Wenger has the answers, and it seems we’ll never quite work out his thinking when it comes to Van Persie. With the Champions League programme looming, we can surely expect more uncertainly, perhaps some smokescreens.

However, today surely confirmed that we can ill afford to take risks with Van Persie and the armband. There is no better Fantasy damage dealer and if there’s a chance that he will be on the pitch, particularly against abject opposition, we have to back him. That policy may cost us – there may well be occasions when Van Persie will be left fidgeting on the bench whilst sporting our armbands. The question is, will those who suffer that fate feel any worse that those who missed out on today’s incredible haul? Right now, in this Knee Jerk, it seems unlikely.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

He did fly in and could be deemed reckless so doubt it will recinded. Having said that the sunderland players reaction was ridiculous...faked injury until red was shown then got up and was fine. Tosser!!!

Thank god Agueros' off, my chief rival had him captain and was in danger of cancelling out the RVP effect!
Apart from Robin it's been a pretty average week so far. My cheapies Shotton and Morrison both came on late for 1 point and neither Sinclair or Silva have been involved in their teams goals.
52 points with 5 to play, but 40 from one player! God bless RVP is all I can say and here's hoping Newcastle are on song vs VIlla.

For those who own Aguero and RVP and captained them the wrong way round.

If bonuses go their way, which looks likely given that RVP raped Blackburn and Agueros stats were good, those who captained Kun are only looking at an 11 point loss. Not too bad really.

A bit of a strange article here, unless I'm missing something.
"So, to counter that, in this morning’s Preamble, we stressed the need to keep faith with Van Persie and hope that Wenger resisted the gamble. Hopefully, that helped some in their decision to sit tight"

The fact is, Arsenal were home to a poor team, where before the game would have been odds on to win, with RVP or without. It made sense for Wenger to rest for him for this game, if he had any plans to.

Unless you had inside information, it was perfectly understandable to shift the (C) band from RVP to Aguero and on another day it would have been the correct decision.

Luck certainly played it's part this GW - Rovers lost a defender which wouldn't happen every weekend. Rovers have picked up a bit of form, so there were plenty of reasons NOT to (C) RVP and instead switch it the 8.4 ppg home record of Aguero.

It can be annoying when so many Mr Hindsights come out and say the 'told you so', when it really was the flip of a coin.

Completely agree. I had (c) on RvP until literally the day before deadline. Things that affected my decision:

      Resurgent Blackburn
      Rotation threat
      Aguero differential

Completely understandable to take another option. Ok, it didn't pay off and although it is painful, I'm not complaining. I may well make the same decision given the conditions.

So many 'oh you'd have to be absolutely INSANE to captain anyone else' comments on here today.. honestly. As you put if.. Captain Hindsights crawling out of the woodwork to say 'I told you so'. Urgh.

From the quotes I found it very sensible to captain RVP. Wenger said he was "temptated" but he might need to build a team around their main goalscorer. I understand it made some people in doubt, but there was really only one choice for me. This is not an "I told you so" but my gut feeling went RVP, luckily Aguero turned out a good choice as well.

Know where you are coming from as i have shifted armbands/players in the past due to been swayed by various people on the forums.

Wengers comments were inevitable and suggestive but by no means absolute. He made similar comments over the christmas period and never went through with it too. I think that circumstance was the important factor i.e. Arsenals league position and form, and that was why he was never going to rest RVP.

as for luck....Luck occurs every GW.

I'll bench him this week, and next week sell him to Evans, who's probably the best prospect long term.

Was about to ask the same thing.
Might get Jevans or Smalling, play them vs. Norwich and then into the good run.

    Anyone considering Sess > Sig?

I've got McClean and he seems to be equally as good at the moment.

I'm thinking of doing Walters to Siggy. Not so sure about selling Sess, he's on fire at the moment. Nothing wrong with having him and McLean when they're both doing well.

I'd do Walters > Siggy if I were you.

Sess is on fire and I don't mind having both but doubling up on S'land attack is a bit much for me! The plan was to work Mata in for Sess but I'm not so sure now.

Exactly the move I was weighing up, Sess is in fine form though, it's a tough one to call..

I would also lose 0.3 on him.. Do also have McClean as cover though

The way I see it is Sess is on his best form and playing up front but neither will last forever. It's probably a bit early yet to get rid by Siggy looks handy

i dunno. its hard for me to consider taking sess or mclean out atm. im even considering takin dempsey out and using that spare cash to upgrade defence or forwards.

If you time it right that could be wise as Dempsey won't keep up this form for the whole season. On the other hand neither will Sess.
