Scout Notes- FA Cup Fifth Round- Saturday

Ryo Miyaichi catches the eye in his first start for Bolton. Daniel Sturridge saves Chelsea’s blushes at the Bridge, Royston Drenthe inspires Everton to a comfortable win over Blackpool, while the defensive woes pile up for Arsene Wenger as the Gunners are sent packing at Sunderland:

Ryo Miyaichi
Subject of our Gameweek 25 Spot the Differential article, Bolton’s on-loan midfielder vindicated out recent praise with a goal in his first start. Miyaichi impressed coming off the bench last weekend against Wigan and was rewarded with a place in the Trotters’ first XI at Millwall yesterday, as Owen Coyle rang the changes after an insipid defeat at the hands of the Latics. The youngster wasted little time in endearing himself to the travelling support, outpacing the home defence before slotting home a composed finish with just over three minutes on the clock. Priced at 4.9, he could offer a decent cut-price midfield option if he can nail down that left wing role, though with trips to Chelsea and City up next, many will be reluctant to invest in Bolton options right now.

Tuncay
He’s been nothing more than a peripheral figure for the Trotters this term but the on loan Wolfsburg man was afforded a rare start by Coyle yesterday. The Bolton boss dropped both Martin Petrov and Chris Eagles for the Millwall game and Tuncay made his mark, setting up David N’Gog for his side’s second in the 2-0 win. Coyle also drafted in Tim Ream (priced at 4.0 in FPL) for his debut, with the US international partnering David Wheater in central defence; Zat Knight dropped down to the bench, as the visitors chalked up a rare clean sheet.

Daniel Sturridge
The forward came to the rescue for Chelsea, grabbing the equaliser against Birmingham to force a replay at St Andrews on Tuesday March 6. Sturridge has been woefully off-form over the last couple of months, having failed to score since Gameweek 17 but, with Bolton, West Brom and Stoke up next for the London outfit, has perhaps found himself back on Fantasy radars on the back of yesterday’s goal. Andre Villas-Boas’ side were poor once again, though; booed off the pitch at full-time, their performance will be a worry for any Fantasy owners, with those managers who are currently considering a punt possibly thinking twice now.

Juan Mata
With Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba starting from the bench, Mata was the automatic choice when his side were awarded a first half spot-kick. He fluffed his lines, however, as Birmingham keeper Colin Doyle dived low to his right to turn the Spaniard’s effort onto the post. It’s perhaps unlikely Mata would have been handed the penalty if either Lampard or Drogba were on the pitch, though yesterday’s miss will hardly have helped his chances in staying ahead of the pair in the pecking order.

Royston Drenthe
It seems the arrival of Steven Pienaar has spurred the Dutchman back into life. With Pienaar cup-tied for yesterday’s game against Blackpool, Drenthe was afforded a chance on the Everton left by David Moyes and was quick off the mark, netting inside 60 seconds to give the Merseysiders an early advantage. Drenthe soon followed this up with a corner-kick assist for Denis Stracqualursi five minutes later, as the home side took command at Goodison. Given the recent performances of Pienaar, however, it still seems that Drenthe will be consigned to a bench role when Everton return to league duties in Gameweek 27, with the latter’s defensive work and understanding with Leighton Baines on the flank looking likely to see him given the nod.

Denis Stracqualursi
The Argentine is starting to acclimatise to the demands of the English game after a slow beginning to his loan spell at Goodison. Stracqualursi had made a single start in the first 22 Gameweeks of the season, with eight brief sub appearances also thrown in, but has featured in the first XI for the last three league now, grabbing a goal in last week’s win over Chelsea. He netted again yesterday, prodding home from a corner, and with big-money signing Nikica Jelavic still sidelined with a stomach problem, is making a strong case for further first-team contention. Everton have a blank Gameweek, followed by a (qpr, TOT, ARS) but, as their recent victories –and clean sheets- against City and Chelsea have suggested, Moyes’ side are starting to pick up pace in the second half of the season once again.

Wes Hoolahan
With Grant Holt afforded the day off by Paul Lambert, Steve Morison partnered Simeon Jackson up top for the Canaries. Wes Hoolahan grabbed the spot-kick duties in Holt’s absence, netting from the rebound after Kasper Schmeichel had saved his initial effort. Given they haven’t been beaten at home since Gameweek 12, yesterday’s 2-1 Carrow Road defeat at the hands of Leicester proved a huge surprise for Norwich, though- up next they play host to the champions, as United roll up in Gameweek 26.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Despite having excelled in his brief stint on the left flank in Gervinho’s recent African Cup of Nations absence, many had expected the youngster to drop to the bench upon the Ivorian’s return. Gervinho did, indeed, come straight back into the first XI but Arsene Wenger shifted Oxlade-Chamberlain over to the right instead, with a below-par Theo Walcott dropping to the bench. Oxlade-Chamberlain managed the full 90 minutes – though this was perhaps down to injuries to others forcing Wenger’s hand -and it’s clear that the Arsenal boss views him as a serious alternative to Walcott. With an FPL price difference of 6.0 compared to Walcott’s 8.8, the mid-price appeal of Oxlade-Chamberlain is obvious. A late own goal somewhat dampened his day but his performance was far from the worst in a dire Gunners display.

Arsenal Defensive Woes
This week saw Per Mertesacker sidelined with a long-term ankle injury, while Laurent Koscielny limped out of Wednesday’s 4-0 hammering in Milan. Arsenal’s options at the back were further decimated yesterday, ahead of the north London derby against Spurs. Wenger chose to omit Kieran Gibbs as a precautionary measure at the Stadium of Light, with Francis Coquelin slotting in at left-back for the Gunners. Coquelin’s day lasted just 10 minutes, though, as he limped off with what looked like a hamstring injury. Sebastien Squillaci was sent on, moving into the heart of defence, but failed to cover himself in glory- he deflected the Black Cats opener past Lukasz Fabianksi before being subbed off early in the second half with a knock. Alex Song dropped into central defence for the remainder of the game and, given that Aaron Ramsey was also subbed off with an ankle knock, Wenger has no shortage of problems for next Sunday’s derby.

Kieran Richardson
A place at left-back has dented his Fantasy potential and with the emergence of James McClean on the Sunderland wing, Richardson’s best bet for a starting role may be as part of the Black Cats’ defensive unit. At the back, Martin O’Neill’s side have impressed of late; they had chalked up four clean sheets in six prior to last week’s league defeat at the hands of Arsenal but this time managed to keep the visitors at bay, in another intelligent defensive display. A deflected opener also served a reminder of Richardson’s eye for goal, suggesting Wayne Bridge faces a real struggle to establish himself in the Black Cats XI.

    Group D

    Manager: Bizzle
    Team: Real Madrid
    Rank: 1,417
    TV: 107.5

Despite lacking a past season's history it's a safe assumption that Bizzle
knows what he's doing. It takes more than just cojones to represent Real Madrid,
as his rank of 1417 will testify. Not afraid of a judicious 8 point hit,
Bizzle has two since GW 16, when he clearly cracked after a hit-free
    season to that point.

Key Differential: Morison is a hell of a differential to hold, if he gets the
minutes. Is it safe to assume tayht this week's completed transfer was Valencia?
Not really, as Walters and Enrique may also be primed for the chop.

    Manager: gad
    Team: Lyon
    Rank: 15,088
    TV: 106.4

Lyon's scorching blaze of form has seen gad's team collect 5 green arrows and
move up over 25,000 places. Even with consecutive points hits in the last two,
gad has amassed 92 and 51 points. Not too shabby at all and set up for a fine
    tournament.

Key Differential: Joe Allen is certainly capable of scoring well, even in tough
fixtures. McClean's good form will also be important in this team. Walker's returns
will also be key. could this be Shotton's time to shine? Probably not, but it
would be funny and gad would certainly get the last laugh.

    Manager: Daniel
    Team: Ajax
    Rank: 29,943
    TV: 110.1

FFS stalwart Daniel could certainly hold his own in a pissing contest, what with
last year's immense rank of 26. He's also shown steady improvement year on year
making his current ranking a bit of a blip by his standards. Forget about boardroom
troubles, this Ajax team could go all the way.

Key Differential: Step forward Daniel Sturridge! With nearly 5m in the bank, Ajax
can afford to strengthen across the field. Strong defensive returns are expected
from the Kompany + Hart combo. Will Dawson's points keep pace with those of his
    Spurs team mates?

    Manager: Jonny Englander
    Team: Dinamo Zagreb
    Rank: 43,292
    TV: 108.5

Dinamo Zagreb are having their best ever FPL season. Jonny has clearly upped his
game and looks to be rewarded with his first top 50k finish this year.He is capable
of causing some upsets but will struggle in a strong group.

Key Differential: Taiwo, McCauley and Zamora are brave choices in the same team. This
could pay off handsomely. any points gained here are likely to be lost by the
Vorm / Lindy combo + Sanderos. Jonny may find that the defense needs patching up if
he's to progress to the knockouts.

To answer the previous Udit question, yes I am considering selling RVP.

70 points behind mini league leader after being in the lead 8 GW's ago. Now need differentials and everyone has RVP and will no doubt be captaining him. I can see diminished returns from him and Arsenal over the next month or so.

I think him and Silva (who everyone has as well) appear to be the major candidates for nomar's season defining surgery. Thinking Rooney for RVP and Yaya for Silva as a means of trying to claw back that mini league lead.

If you are in a good position then probably no need to sell RVP but when you have 8 red flags in a row you kind of need to shake something up.

          Oh.

I'd wait for next week then. Fulham don't travel well and Silva should at least get an assist or something against Blackburn.

Doing it next week won't cost him anything and Fulham are at home then.

Sideways move though unless he's doing another move with it then there's really no point.

I like the moves but I think that he probably won't miss out on much by waiting until next week to do them. Silva should get something this week so just taking him out for Yaya doesn't really make sense.

Dempsey obviously will earn more points than Valencia but, again, Fulham don't tend to score much away from home regardless of the opposition so even an (unfortunately in my case) obliging QPR defence will probably limit his output this weekend.

Next week he's home to Wolves, which seems much more like a Dempsey goalfest gameweek to me.

    Group E

    Manager: El Nino Rules
    Team: Chelsea
    Rank: 11,634
    TV: 107.6

Give it up for our fantastic host! El Nino Rules is known throughout the FFS community,
not least due to his expanding breast appeal. He hopes to put those hooters to good
use by "making it" with a chemical engineer of some sort. When asked what this would
involve, El Nino declined to comment and could not be reached for further questions.

Key Differential: Boobies. Great big ones. Chelsea also boast the twin Sess and McClean
stripes, making it a Sunderlicious line up. One of two teams in this group with a
remaining wildcard, El Nino will hope to keep it until it's needed.

    Manager: FrogDog
    Team: Bayer Leverkusen
    Rank: 94,338
    TV: 106

The rank outsider of Group E, FrogDog enters the tournament with 3 consecutive red
arrows and 12 points in hits in the last 3 weeks. That's a drop of over 60,000
places. FrogDog's initial strategy will surely be to avoid finishing in fourth place.

Key Differntial: Take your pick. Sturridge, A Cole, Alex OC, Dave Cisse and whoever
replaces Valencia - that's half a team of differentials. Should we get another
topsy turvy week, FrogDog could be causing the mother of all upsets.

    Manager: Aguerolicioso
    Team: Valencia
    Rank: 41,229
    TV: 110.8

Looking top crash the top two in this group, Aguerolicsioso's Valencia have a few
tricks up their sleeves. A large team value just for starters. Then consider only
2 red arrows since GW 11. Add in a remaining wildcard and this team's chances start
    to look downright tempting.

Key Differential: With one transfer already made, this team keeps us guessing. Triple
Man City, double QPR and Sunderland and the joker in the pack, Luiz in defense.
Valencia's fortunes are very much in the hands of fate.

    Manager: Brian(Not the messiah)
    Team: Racing Genk
    Rank: 400
    TV: 110.5

Look at the rank. Pick yourself up. Despite his denials, Brian's been making a powerful
case in support of his being more than just a very naughty boy. In the top 1000 for 6
consecutive weeks, Racing are performing miracles week in, week out. Cautious on the
transfers, deadly in using Moses to score actual points, this team could have it all,
    with cash to spare.

Key Differential: With 3.5m in the bank, pretty much any position is upgradeable.
Vermaelen is dangerous whatever the team's form. This team has all the nous, power
and accuracy of a South African swallow in full flight.

    Group F

    Manager: Canadian Football
    Team: Arsenal
    Rank: 11,229
    TV: 107.1

Top seed in Group F, Arsenal are hoping not to make hard going of it. Led by new
manager Canadian Football, the team are having a splendid season so far and are
consolidating their position just outside the top 10K. The manager's last hit was
way back in GW13. A rise of over 100,000 places since then is proof that the formula
    is working.

Key Differential: If anything, this is a team full of undifferentials. This makes
them dangerous at any time. Dzeko is the standout joker in this pack and Moses
provides a useful first sub. There's enough cash in this team to see the former
replaced by a real Big Gun - who will it be? Not Mertesacker, that's for sure.

    Manager: Fratboy
    Team: Marseille
    Rank: 43,360
    TV: 105.7

Southpark's own Fratboy has suffered a cruel run of form after a sustained spell
in the top 10K. He appears to have stalled Marseille's slide, and not a moment
or transfer too soon. This group looks tight, and Fratboy may have to be content
with a thrid place finish. He'd doubtless tell us to Get Defoe Kuyt, but we pay no
    attention to sweary puns.

Key Differential: Where to begin? Surely with Bogdan. With Hart as backup, this
move could pay off handsomely. Elsewhere we see Ban Arfa and Wellbeck adding a touch
of spice to the affair. Double Fulham defense could prove costly. Really costly.

    Manager: Rukawa
    Team: Olympiakos

A dark horse and no mistake. A truly heroic run of form has seen the unfancied Greek
side climb almost 100,000 places in five weeks. Testing opponents with every chance of
going through, Rukawa's team could just about achieve the impossible, although they'll
have a mountain to climb. It could be a Hurculean task on the cards.

Key Differential: Schwartzer and Shotton are the highlights here. The rest of the team
will be strong. With no money in the bank, there's little wriggle room in this team.
Valencia's replacement will hold the key to their fortunes.

    Manager: heco87
    Team: Borussia Dortmund
    Rank: 17,240
    TV: 108

Dortmund are looking to beat their best ever finish of 19,038 from last year and are bang
on courdse to achieve that. Having seemingly recovered from their winter slump, manager
heco87 will want to avoid getting caught up in the battle for second. A good start will
    be essential then.

Key Differential: Baines and Graham are the stand out contenders, both capable of
explosive returns. Strong in all areas, this team is set to score well over the next few
weeks and beyond. But will it be enough to win the group?

Vermaelen is not worth having. Downgrade him to Skrtel/Agger/G Johnson.
      Moses>Siggy
Nani>Silva Nani is very inconsistent in FPL terms and you need Silva for City cover.
Dawson>BAE if you can, don't think you can.
Also Schwarz>Krul if you have the funds. Krul and Mignolet rotates very well.

All fair points. I fancy Nani to outscore Silva from GW28 onwards (fixtures are far kinder), plus he'll be a bit of a differential for me. Verm -> one of the LIV defenders could be a good plan though! Krul would be doubling on NEW defence...

Depends how much he bought Enrique for. I got him a while ago so would stand to lose quite a bit of value in that move as he's got a good run of fixtures from 28/29 onwards. I'm keeping personally.

Not sure who you're benching from your front 8 (if Valencia was fit) so I would downgrade Valencia to Moses/Sigurdsson/Surman/McClean and maybe pocket the cash for a rainy day.

Wouldn't mind Mignolet / Sorenson in for Moreira but I know there's a few people with your tactic.

    Group G

    Manager: Archie
    Team: Apoel Nicosia
    Rank: 82,415
    TV: 109

Fun Fact - Apoel recorded only their second points hit of the season last week,
following an 8 pointer way back in the mists of GW6. It didn't work and saw the team,
led by reclusive manager Archie, fall nearly 20,000 places. Recent form aside, this team
are going to have a hard job given the 3-way fight between the other teams in this group.
They're not short of cash and will be hoping for some well timed slip ups from rivals.

Key Differential: Another undifferential team here. That's no bad thing when you're hoping
to keep pace with three others. Taiwo doing well would be beneficial. Look for defensive
upgrades following the sale of Valencia.

    Manager: St Pertersburg
    Team: Zenit St Peterburg
    Rank: 17,733
    TV: 107.9

A superb run of post-wilcard form has Zenit powering through the rankings like a drug
crazed Tony Montana at his desk o'cocaine. Near the end of that film. Zenit will have to
take the bullets if they are to make good on that 2nd seeding.

Key Differential: Shawcross and Alex Oc fo shure. If the defense continues to score
anything like last week's mammoth 29 points, this team's got a chance. Once again, Valencia's
replacement will be where the game's won or lost.

    Manager: Pratik
    Team: FC Porto
    Rank: 16,699
    TV: 109.3

Another FPL old timer, Pratik's FC Porto are aiming to emulate The Special One's success in
the Big Cup and show AVB how it's done. A repeat of the scores that brought him last year's rank of 1524 should just about do it. With a wildcard still available, timing will be everything for this team.

Key Differential: Gary Cahill, come on down! Chelsea's form will be important in the next
few weeks. Storm clouds on the horizon though, with an injured bench and tough selection
issues in midfield. Has this competition come too soon?

    Manager: Fuzzy Czarbles
    Team: Shaktar Donetsk
    Rank: 50,843
    TV: 109.1

Shaktar, like Fuzzy, are always dangerous in these competitions. The Naturalised Russian
coach shows a fierce passion for his team and an iron will, making a decisive early transfer
already this week. Last year's ranking of 10,085 should provide an indication of his
prospects this time around. Discount at your peril.

Key Differential: Big Verm and Lindegaard form an unlikely paring here. Gametime concerns
for Senderos, Cisse and even Santon indicate some surgery required. Ever the diligent manager,
expect Fuzzy to address these issues before key matchups.

Should all players manage to finish upon 9 points then goal difference will come into force. Whoever had the highest points difference over the six week run will go through.

Points difference is the winners score minus the losers score each week.

aka if it was Ginkvan v Doosra

And our scores were 100 v 40 then I would have a 60 PD and you would have -60 PD.

          *Those numbers are highly realistic.

Home teams get a lovely 4 point advantage, but as we play everyone twice in theory it cancels out. However, some gameweeks wil favour some more than others. Looking at mine, I get the home games when I need em.

Ok, last week I transferred out RVP for Rooney. Since I've done that, Arsenal has lost 4-0 to Milan, and 2-0 to Sunderland. If this continues into the PL the anxious feeling in my stomach may disappear and my decision could be justified. Front three of Ba, Rooney, Aguero..... reckon its a risky move?

Cabaye for set pieces? Always good for an assist...

Moses? Plays forward and classed as an FPL midfielder.

Personally I'd go with Cabaye - 3 very nice home games in the next 4. Although Moses is tempting...

    Group H

    Manager: Zep Guardiola
    Team: Barcelona
    Rank: 4,198
    TV: 111.7

The strongest team in possibly the tightest group of them all. Barcelona and their
charismatic manager would stroll through any group stage, except for perhaps this one.
Form is strong with a team that knows how to peak at the right time, as last years top
10K finish shows. For bonus points, who knew that Barcelona's talismanic manager hails
    from bonny wee Scotchland?

Key Differential: It's got to be the Baines & Enrique combo - dynamite except for this week.
A powerful front eight can absorb the shock of Valencia's injury without so much as
flinching. The defense could be in danger if rotation is required, but Zep hasn't come this
    far by fielding 10 players.

    Manager: 4vetti
    Team: AC Milan
    Rank: 31,364
    TV: 111.8

This team have shown year on year improvement and that trend looks set to continue. With a
long history of success, new manager 4vetti will have to work hard to match his
predecessors. Can Milan overturn three weeks of rotten form in time for this competition?
The manager's held his nerve so far, refusing to take hits to remedy the situaion. Will it
    last?

Key Differential: In keeping with European Royalty, this Milan team have more cash than all
but one of the teams and a cheeky 1k more than rivals Barca. This means a team filled with
top drawer talent. Riise is the stand-out differential here, though doubling with Schwartzer
is a risky move. Enrique's absence can easily be accommodated in this team and he could do
well at home to Arsenal next week.

    Manager: Sleep Talk
    Team: Viktoria Plzen
    Rank: 29,975
    TV: 109.6

A taciturn manager, Sleep Talk did not have much to say about being drawn in this nightmare
group. The relative pauper in this "milllionaires club" with a team value of less than 110
(still one of the highest, mind) Plzen's form is nothing to shout about. An early transfer
has already been registered with further changes possible later.

Key Differential: Big Bad Verm makes another appearance and the manager will be hoping for
goals here. Taiwo, Huth and Santon also provide some attacking threat from defense and
that's where Sleepy will be hoping to get that competitive edge.

    Manager: ColeHole
    Team: BATE Borisov
    Rank: 17,224
    TV: 113.9

The Nouveau Riche of the UCL, former whipping boys BATE are determined to pay tribute to
their founding principles of building tractors and making electricity. Whopping doesn't
quite to justice to a team value just shy of 114 (down following an early sale). Still it's
not a case of all mouth, no trousers as a ranking of 17,224 demonstrates.

Key Differential: Poor form has seen manager ColeHole drop nearly 10,000 in three weeks and
take three consecutive 4 pointers to right the good ship BATE. It's too early to tell if this
has worked but the team has the ability to tailor itself to the gameweeks, almost regardless
of cost. Cynics would point to the example of fellow moneybags FC Anzhi-Bekenez Makhachkala,
who are still crap despite being considerably richer than you.

    Goodnight!

Caulker is about the nearest Colehole gets to a differential, if after two TFs and a 4pt hit for GW26 he's still there.
