Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Poland

Having previously cast on eye over the prospects of both the Czech Republic and Greece, it’s time to continue the analysis of Group A in our Euro 2012 round-up. Next up, then, we turn our attentions to co-hosts Poland.

Franciszek Smuda’s side get the tournament underway on Friday June 8 with a showdown against Greece at 5pm. Following that, they pit their wits against Russia in Warsaw on June 12 at 7.45pm before facing up to the Czech Republic in their final group game, which takes place four days later on Saturday 16 June at 7.45pm.

With none of the tournament’s big names involved, this is anyone’s group to win. Greece won their qualifying group ahead of favourites Croatia, unbeaten with seven wins from 10 matches. Russia pipped the Republic of Ireland to top spot in their group by a couple of points, while the Czech Republic cruised past Montenegro in the play-off after finishing second to Spain.

The Friendlies

Poland have played nine friendlies since last August in preparation for next month’s big event, with two more – against Macedonia and Turkey – to follow on May 26 and June 2 respectively. Smuda’s men have tasted defeat just the once over those matches, going down 2-0 to Italy; draws against Germany and Portugal are testament to their capabilities, while four of those games ended in victory. Poland picked up four clean sheets, scoring more than one goal four times and conceding more than one on three occasions. After tinkering with the system and trialling several players over those friendlies, Smuda now seems settled on a 4-2-3-1 system as the best way forward.

Most Appearances: Blaszczykowski, Dudka & Mierzejewski (all 8), Brozek, Wawrziniak, Peszko, Wasilewski, Matuszczyk (all 7)

Most Goals: Blaszczykowski (4), Lewandowski (3), Brozek (2)

Most Assists: Lewandowski (2)

The Likely Lads

Poland have a trio of Borussia Dortmund players to boost their bid for home success. Fresh from winning the German league and cup double, Lukasz Piszczek looks the best value from their backline – the right-back comes in at 5.0 in the McDonalds game, the same price as Wojciech Szczesny, though has an ownership of 8.8% in comparison to the keeper’s 18.1%. With four goals and seven assists in a superb Bundesliga campaign, Piszczek offers far more attacking potential than any of his defensive team mates.

Jakub Blaszczykowski also replicates his Dortmund role, playing wide right in a 4-2-3-1; his understanding with Piszczek on the flank will clearly be advantageous to Poland. Priced at 7.5, Blaszczykowski is the priciest of the Poles’ midfield options but the skipper was top scorer in those recent friendlies and, in addition to taking his fair share of free-kicks and corners, also stepped up for both penalties awarded over those nine games. The only question mark here is that Robert Lewandowski was subbed off before Blaszczykowski netted from the spot against Germany, while the latter missed a spot-kick against Italy after Lewandowski received lengthy treatment for the foul leading up to the award.

Robert Lewandowski heads into the tournament on the back of a sensational domestic season. The forward grabbed 22 goals and eight assists for Jürgen Klopp’s all-conquering Dortmund and finished the campaign by firing a hat-trick in the 5-2 German Cup Final win over Bayern Munich. Lewandowski managed six appearances over the afore-mentioned friendlies and demonstrated just how crucial he is likely to be, with three goals and a couple of assists. Priced at 8.0, he carries the hopes of the hosts on his shoulders more than any other Poland player.

Cheeky Punt

French-born centre-half Damien Perquis was one of the stand-out stars in the recent goalless draw with Portugal, receiving plenty plaudits for his assured display at the back. Plying his trade for Ligue 1 side Sochaux, Perquis has fully recovered from a recent elbow injury to take his place in the provisional squad named by Smuda in the early stages of this month. Priced at 4.5 and with a 0.4% ownership, he offers a cut-price route into the co-hosts’ defence, for those Fantasy managers looking for a budget option.

Voted the best player in the Polish Ekstraklasa in the 2010/11 season, the creative endeavours of Adrian Mierzejewski helped clinch the midfielder a move to Trabzonspor in the campaign gone by. Priced at 7.0, he’s likely to play on the left of the midfield three and shares corner kicks with Blaszczykowski, in addition to taking his share of free-kicks. Mierzejewski looks a nailed-on starter, taking part in all but one of Poland’s nine friendlies – the only absence was due to Smuda’s decision to field a Polish-based XI for the clash with Bosnia-Herzegovina back in December.

well a post GW1 wildcard yes. May as well, don't think there'll be much rotation in GW3, after that we have so many FTs to play with a wc is almost pointless.

Don't bother with this one; it is a feint ...

                  The Clown Punk

                  by Simon Armitage

Driving home through the shonky side of town,
Three times out of ten you’ll see the town clown,
Like a basket of washing that got up
And walked, towing a dog on a rope. But

Don’t laugh: every pixel of that man’s skin
Is shot through with indelible ink:
As he steps out at the traffic lights,
Think what he’ll look like in thirty years’ time –

The deflated face and shrunken scalp
Still daubed with the sad tattoos of high punk.
You kids in the back seat who wince and scream
When he slathers his daft mush on the windscreen,

Remember the clown punk with his dyed brain,

Then picture windscreen wipers, and let it rain.

All my thoughts on Greece for Fantasy Euro 2012. Apologies if I sound a bit arrogant in the last paragraph, perhaps Sir P didn't make a mistake at all and I misinterpreted his piece. Let me know!

    THE DEFENCE

Greece qualified for Euro 2012 by finishing 2 points clear of Croatia in Group F and went the entire process without losing a game thanks to their defence who only shipped 5 goals in total. It’s not as good as Russia’s defensive record, but Greece conceded an average of 0.63 goals in all matches, including friendlies, which have been played since August 2010. During that Period, the Greeks have played 19 times, keeping 9 clean sheets.

Although not fully nailed on, 4.0 million Alexandros Tzorvas will likely be Fernando Santos’ first choice goalkeeper. However, he only played 16 times in all competitions this season for Palermo which may be a concern, but second choice keeper Michalis Sifakis only played twice this season so 38-year old Kostas Chalkias might well be the one in contention to challenge Tzorvas for the number one spot.

In terms of defenders, Sokratis Papastathopoulos is the safest option. He costs 5.0 million and is owned by just 1 per cent of all players despite playing more international football than any other defensive asset over the course of the qualifying campaign. He made 30 appearances in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen this season, but only managed 2 shots on goal throughout the season so attacking returns don’t look likely.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos is the highest-owned Greek player in the game despite only playing 4 of the qualifiers for his country. However, his emergence is more of a recent thing and his momentum may well carry him onto the starting 11 for Gameweek 1. He has the potential to play further forward as a defensive midfielder and scored 7 times for Schalke this season. He has scored 2 international goals to date from 584 minutes of game time, an attacking record which may see him favoured by Santos.

A more secure but expensive goalscoring defender is Vassilis Torossidis. He has played all but 45 minutes of Greece’s last 6 games, so is currently in favour with the coach. His 2 goals in the qualifying campaign make him an interesting option.

    THE ATTACK

With an average of 1.15 goals scored per game, Greece have the worst goalscoring record of all the teams in Group A. Over the past 19 games, Dimitris Salpingidis has been their top scoring striker but with only 3 goals, doesn’t seem overly-enticing. His 10 club goals in 42 appearances for PAOK this season doesn’t exactly make him a stand-out option either, but for 5.0 million he might just be worth a punt considering he will more than likely play a part in all 3 group games.

Kostas Katsouranis is available for 5.5 million and is probably the best midfield option. Having played all but one of the qualifying matches, he’ll surely be nailed on come the Poland game. The Panathinaikos man has scored 5 goals in 23 games this season which makes him a better option than Giorgos Karagounis, who only managed one. If you’re superstitious however, Karagounis scored the first goal of Euro 2004 which was against the hosts Portugal. Could he score against the hosts in the first game of this year’s tournament? It’ll cost you 6.0 million to have a punt.

Finally, regarded as one of Greece’s best young players, Sotiris Ninis could be the wonder kid to light up this year’s competition. He was the youngest player ever to captain Panathinaikos and despite a certain Sir Paulos saying otherwise in his article yesterday, he did indeed feature in the qualification campaign. In fact, he scored the winner in Tel-Aviv to sink Israel – a goal which was pivotal in Greece’s triumph of Group F. He’s one to add to the watchlist and watch out for over the friendlies. At 5.5 million, he could be worth the risk if guaranteed pitch time.

Sorry about earlier, honestly didn't mean it. Stupid heat of moment me.

Interested to see if he'll get game time now that he's back from that cruciate injury. I've a bad feeling that the manager will stick with the team that finished the group though

I deliberately said that Salpingidis is their top scoring 'striker' because Fetfatzids has scored the same amount from midfield. His minutes over the last 7 games have been 13-46-0-0-0-0-4 so I don't think the manager rates him that highly. Don't know why though, because 3 goals from midfield is absolutely sensational by Greek standards! Again though, he'll be monitored come friendly time

I think the best time to use the wildcard will be for GW 3 actually.

Remember if the big teams win their first two they will field a weakened team for the 3rd match and then it'd be a great time to shift players out and get in players from teams who desperately need to win. (England maybe?)

I wouldn't plan so narrowly to use the WC GW 2, could backfire badly.

remember 3 things on this though

      1) we will only know line-ups for group A before deadline

      2) only 2 per team anyway so not like you can load up

      3) based on 2, knowing who to pick after first 2 GWs could be a gamble, some managers may not make 11 changes.

      4) Rooney in GW3 😛

If ye were to divide the teams in the Euros into four groups in order of most likely to win with group one being most likely and group 4 being least likely what way would ye rank it?

I believe it would be like this:

    Group1
    Holland
    Germany
    Spain
    England

    Group 2
    Russia
    Italy
    France
    Sweden

    Group 3
    Poland
    Czech Republic
    Portugal

    Group 4

Mmmm even so I'm not sure of this overall ranking. Certainly think Russia should be lower, sounds weird but I watched their qualifying matches and they really are ridiculously wasteful in front of goal. Probably wouldn't Rank England in group 1. Think Croatia should be higher, they're a strong side too.

Midfield and attack are what concern me. Trap will play the best defence we have, no question. In the mids he'll have Andrews and McGeady when really he should play Fahey and McClean. Up front I'd rather Long and Cox instead of Keane and Doyle. The Spanish mids will be able to take Keith Andrews and McGeady apart. Need a big defensive performance.

True. Id prefer McClean to be playing. Id play Long and Keane. Cox doesnt have the experience and Keane is still playing well. Shame Doyle hasnt been playing much recently. We need to best Croatia or Italy to qualify though. Tough task but possible.

Can't blame a youngster to be lured to such a big paycheck. It's understandable just disappointing. I like Gaitan too, very good player as is Muniain. Would love to get Muinain actually. My concern is more that Gaitan, Hazard and Muinain are all more wing based players, we really need some major strength in the middle.

Is Cristico nailed on for Italy? Have 6 million to spend on a defender

(rest of defence is Badstuber, MOlsson, K. Papadoplous and Kadlec.

    Other options are

    Corluka, Evra, Mexes, Rami.

Or I could keep Corluka and upgrade Akinfeev to Hart (or just keep the Russian until the knockouts?)

Can somebody just clarify the rules of the McD Euro game re:subs. Let's say I have Cech and Akinfeev as my two goalies. If I start the Russian but the Czech Republic win 1-0, can I swap keepers after the game has finished but before the next GW deadline?

Seems a bit odd if this is the case and presumably should impaction the way we structure our squads.

Evening guys. I had a pretty decent season with FPL and I am going to have a crack at the McDonalds Euro game. Trouble is I know next to nothing about the Euro teams. A little advice please. Hows this lot look so far.

    Cech (Lindegaard)

    Abate / Papydapyloss / Zhirkov / Lahm / Piszczek

    Schweinsteiger / Ribery / Iniesta / Blaszczykowski / Andrews

    Roben / Jelavic / Ibrahimovic

Don't think Lindegaard is the 1st choice behind the sticks for Denmark so i'd sell him. Abate also doesn't seem like he starts, with Maggio ahead of him in the pecking order. Jelavic's place is under threat too, but it depends on how he performs in the friendlies. I'd say the likely 2 upfront for them will be Mandzukic and Olic. Decent team otherwise. Maybe Ribery > Nasri/Cabaye giving you funds to strengthen elsewhere.

ok let's get a straw poll going

Who is wildcarding for GW2 and who for GW3.

Building a team for the first 2 weeks is hard and leaving enough spare cash for Ibra to Benzema in GW2 compromises the GW1 team quite badly. GW3 makes more sense in terms of squad rotation, but GW2 makes more sense in terms of fixtures.
