Season Review

Team of the Season – Gylfi Sigurdsson

Swansea’s capture of 22-year-old Gylfi Sigurdsson from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim was a January move that attracted little interest. While the media shone their spotlight elsewhere, the Icelandic playmaker arrived in Wales with little fanfare. Brendan Rodgers, having worked with Sigurdsson at Reading, knew different.

The signing of Sigurdsson proved a masterstroke. While Swansea had struggled for a cutting edge, Rodgers had introduced a player who handed his side a real threat from midfield.

Deployed in a central role, playing in support of a lone striker, Sigurdsson was given license to roam and deal damage. His long-range shooting, graceful stride and the ability to raid the penalty box with purpose were all in evidence from day one. Having suffered frustration at Hoffenheim, Sigurdsson took little time in adjusting to Swansea’s classy brand of football, announcing himself in the English top flight as Fantasy managers quickly began to take notice.

The Statistics

Sigurdsson’s impact at the Liberty was almost immediate. An appearance from the bench brought him an assist in a 3-2 win over Arsenal, which was followed by two more assists and a goal in the next three matches. The 13-point haul at West Brom in Gameweek 24 signaled the start of an extraordinary run of goals away from home as the Icelander hit a brace at both Wigan and Fulham in March, whilst also notching in a 3-1 defeat at Spurs.

Six goals in his first ten starts demonstrated his goal threat, couple that with four assists and it was clear that Sigurdsson offered real value for money in Fantasy terms: by Gameweek 31, his modest initial price tag of 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game had risen by 0.4.

Ironically, while his ownership and price continued to increase, this interest was to signal a comparatively lean spell for the Swansea man. Sigurdsson closed the season with just a single goal and two assists from Gameweek 32 onwards. Nevertheless, his value to the Swans as a mid-price Fantasy asset was obvious. Seven goals, five assists and 11 FPL bonus points was an outstanding return for a 5.0 midfield option; an average of 5.7 points per game was better than any midfielder in the game, edging Clint Dempsey’s 5.6.

The Prospects

Before the new blood is introduced, Brendan Rodgers has made keeping Sigurdsson at the club a priority. From the news last night, it appears that he may have got his wish. Sky have reported that a fee for Sigurdsson had been agreed with Hoffenheim and it looks as though he’ll be within their squad and on our wishlists for next season.

That has to be the best outcome for all concerned, although we now have to brace ourselves for a major hike in Sigurdsson’s Fantasy valuation.

He’s likely to move up the midfield brackets in dramatic style, perhaps even edging out of the mid-price to share a ballpark with the likes of Theo Walcott and Antonio Valencia. With such a low price this season, we can perhaps hope for something around the 7.0 – 7.5 mark in the FPL, although that could well be optimistic given Sigurdsson’s rate of returns.

Should he demand 8.0 or more, it remains to be seen if Sigurdsson would attract interest. With heavy-hitting forwards likely to remain the priority next term, we’re set to be scratching around for budget midfield talent, whilst looking to one or two expensive and secure assets. Suddenly Sigurdsson would keep illustrious company and would need to maintain a strong rate of returns to gain suitors.

Sigurdsson’s price tag will be one of the first to be scanned when the player lists are published: it seems set to make or break his potential as a Fantasy asset next season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Cech - Given
    Criscito - Debuchy - Zhirkov - Kadlec - Olsson
    Ozil - Sneijder - Kuba - Srna - Shirokov
    Ibrahimovic - Lewandowksi - Kuyt

How does this team look? My current musings are:

1 - feels strange to have no Spanish players
2 - debating Robben & Jelavic over Lewa & Kuyt

This is an important question. If after GW 1, then I'd bin ITA, FRA Defs, probably Cech too since I fancy the Ruskies. Mid looks solid although Krohn-Dehli (DEN) could be a decent alternative to Shirakov - decent scoring record in qualifiers (2 from, 7 starts) despite tough Grp.

Forward line is reasonable. Ibra is in my own team (at the mo) and seems most likely scorer in a low scoring team. Lewy is a bit of a gamble, his Intl goals have been mainly scored against very weak oppo, but he clearly has class judging by Dortmund form.

Kuyt -OUT. I see not a single reason to have him given debatable starts and likelihood that he'll play in wide areas if he does. Possibly go for the most likely Rusky starter (Pav, Pog, Kerz), or Olic/Eduardo perhaps.

I'm putting together a Euro's team, and reading the rules, the only conclusion I come to is that it is essential to wildcard after Round 1.

There are only 6 rounds, and we get one wildcard. For the Quarters we get unlimited transfers, Semi's 8 free transfers, Final 4 free transfers.

So you really should use your wildcard for Round 2 or Round 3, and why wait till Round 3?

After the first Round we should see where teams stand, and where they're headed.

Simply focus on Round 1 then Wildcard.

I will avoid the titanic battles like Germany vs Portugal, Spain vs Italy, France vs England - they'll be tight and unpredictable.

Teams to perform in Round 1:
    Netherlands over Denmark
    Russia over Czech Rep.
    Poland over Greece

I'm taking Lewandowski, Szecezny, Arshavin, Zhirkov, Van Persie, Van Der Wiel.

Also, it is worth having defensive mids in this game due to the recovered balls - value guys like Parker, M'Vila, Tymoshuck - they'll cost you 6m or less and can easily pull 4 points or more, due to heavy activity, tackling and distribution.

although I do agree that certain games look harder to predict I highly disagree that it's essential to WC after GW1.

Any team that has won 2 of there 1st 2 games is likely to be through meaning they're likely to field fringe players and give key players a rest from GW3 meaning players you just wildcarded in and may even of been planing to captain don't play... hence my thinking of wildcarding after GW2 as I can see what teams need to win their final group game and which side are likely to field fringe players for a 1 week punt then there's unlimited transfers before the QF.

Don't know about the DMs they may prosper with that rules, however I'm looking for goals and assists 😉

thing with using the wc in GW3 is this

Other than in Group A, which we're not overly bothered about, we won't know line-ups before the GW£ deadline. This means you are essentially gambling with your wc on players who are still not guaranteed to start. Bear in mind, given the strength of Group B each side will no doubt wish to win it (especially as it allows them to face the runner up in Group A). So using a wc in GW3 offers no greater security in terms of picking players who will play, thus a wc will be wasted. At least in GW2 you can sure the big hitters you bring in will actually play.

I see your point there are no guarantees that the manager would do that with fielding the fringe players, but I'm willing to take that risk. Also if tied at the top of the group how is it decided? does it go to H2H record or is it straight to Goal difference?

I think it will be :P... but like I said earlier you could always take a punt on a fringe player playing earlier in the week and sub him off later if he doesn't play anyway.

Yeah I didn't think about that - perhaps WC after Round 2 is a better option.....Cheers!

It's basically the same as the Champions League and Europa fantasy - not sure if you guys play that - but often defenders and defensive types can score very well - as they get a lot of recovered balls...

The goal scorers get no bonus either - so you could for example have a situation where Barcelona play, and Messi scores a game winning goal and has a great game. He gets 6 points only. However Busquets gets a clean sheet and 2 points for recovered balls - therefore scoring five points. Dani Alves might get a clean sheet, 2 points for rb's amd score 8 points - and these guys cost a fraction of the price and don't define the game.

Rather than worry: Will Ronaldo squeeze one past the Germans?
Just know that Parker, M'Vila, Tymoshuck etc. + many defenders will outscore the glory boys anyway

Main difference there was that Messi was still must have as no one outscores him when he gets a hat trick or more 😛

It's the difference between reliable points from Tymo, Parker etc. in midfield and the possibility of big points from someone like Ozil or Sneijder, they have the potential for higher scores, but also for lower scores.

IMO you need a mix of both.

Spend big on the defenders that get the most RBs, big on forwards, less on midfield

    @Forca Inter and Hillbilly Pete

After our discussion last night I have redrafted my team. Did think about Jelly, but I thought him and Srna was was too much so I have this

    Akinfeev, Given

MOlsson, K Papa, Maggio, Pizszcek, Kadlec

    Fetfadzidis, Srna, Ozil, Snijder, Shirokov

    Ibra, Lewandowski, Huntelaar.

wc to be used after GW1.

Not keen on Fet, but after getting that strikeforce and Shirokov in he was the best I could afford, unless I downgrade K Papa to Strinic and get Ninis.

it may have been commented on already but, you have to feel really sorry for John Ruddy. He's had a great season, forced his way into the national squad, and then gets injured in his first training session and has to miss the tournament. Ok I know he was only 3rd choice and was not gonna play, but it would have been a fantastic experience for him (on top off staying in the Prem and getting married) now he has to watch on TV like the rest of us. Awful for him.

Don't think they need him considering that Bertrand is a decent back up for cole. Don't think he good enough offensively to go to the front three. If its a backup then its decent for a cut down price.

Just thinking about any other factors which may come in...

    1. WC week 2 or week 3
The way I see it, they each have strengths and weaknesses, but essentially, you get to build a dream team for 1 week. If you WC week 2, you build a team just for week 1. If you WC week 3, just for week 3. Personally, I would much rather build a team for week 3 seeing as we'll have two gameweeks experience to draw on, and have clear indications of each team's motivation.

WC week 2, you're trying to pick an ideal team for week 1 where starting lineups aren't confirmed. People saying they can make greater and longer use of the WC effects after week 2 are wrong because of the fact teams who've qualified will most likely ease off and/or not play their best players week 3.

    2. Price changes
These could be surprisingly annoying, especially if a player scores in the first round. It would be wise then to keep 0.5m in the bank just in case, because in this format, you don't want to take any hits, ever, and all it takes is one injury and you've lost your free transfer. Also, it's wise to hold off on making transfers until later because of injuries, and because we're going in so blind here, we should allow ourselves as much time to assess each team and how well they might do for the rest of the tournament.

good thoughts. WC before GW3 seems the most logical to me as well. that way, i can load up on the players they will excel in the rest of the tourney, and also leave wiggle room to get in the superstars that might be rested on GW3.

I question how many teams will rest players for week 3, with only 3 games in a group you're likely not to be assured of top spot going into that final game.

Liverpool piss me off. So many rushed decisions. What's next, a £50mill bid for Moses? Stupidity or what.

That's the same as a £50 mil bid, we'd have to pay them to accept Downing 😛

Who would you want as manager then?

I think Martinez could do alright for us, we'll see. Whoever comes in, you've just got to support the club and see how they go.

And I wouldn't complain about Moses at Liverpool if we paid a reasonable price 😛 Maybe not a starter though.

Tbh my first choice would've been AVB, but the owners aren't stupid, they will have investigated all the options, they have good advisors. And we need a manager before the transfer window opens really, maybe even sign players before the euros?

I heard you are looking at Van Gaal for a director of football, don't know why you don't dispense with that position and just offer Van Gaal the job of manager, not coach.

Me neither, Van Gaal is proven quality, and has been saying he wants to get back into management, not the same atall as being a DoF.

And I can already see the headlines after Martinez gets a few bad results, it'll just be linked with sacking Martinez with van Gaal ready to take over, same as the Hodgson/Dalglish factor in 2010/11

At the moment, it seems that they a doing the right thing by looking at all the viable manager options available. If Martinez is manager you won't see much stupidity on his side.

depends on the rest of your team.

Jelavic and Snijeder is a fairly safe option. When are you wc, if you fancy a 1 week punt, Shebchenko and Dzagoev.

Dzagoev's been carrying a toe injury, broken I think, so probably giving him as much time as possible to recover.

If he was definitely out he would be out of the squad, he'll probably play all their games, he's too important not to
