Semi Finals – Day One – Dugout Discussion

After a brief three-day hiatus from the Euro 2012 action, we’re raring to go once again as Spain take on Portugal this evening in the first semi-final of the tournament. With only three games left of the competition, there are big decisions to be made by Fantasy managers looking to get that vital edge in their mini-leagues. As always, we’ve opened up the Dugout Discussion ahead of kick-off:

The team news is in and is as follows:

Vicente Del Bosque makes one alteration to Spain’s lineup from the side that saw off France 2-0 in the previous round. It’s a move that will surprise many, with Alvaro Negredo handed the chance to lead the line, as Cesc Fabregas joins Fernando Torres on the bench. Portugal also make a single change but it’s one that had been anticipated. With Helder Postiga due to a hamstring injury, Hugo Almeida is given the lone forward role.

Spain XI: Casillas; Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Jordi Alba; Busquets, Alonso, Xavi; Silva, Negredo, Iniesta

Portugal XI: Patricio: Pereira, Pepe, Bruno Alves, CoentrAo; Veloso, Meireles, Moutinho; Nani, Almeida, Ronaldo

    auto subs question....got home late, did trfs but just as i swapped the subs to select my 11 the game went to "updating" so i ended up with

    casillas
    pereira, hummels, boateng
    makos, khedira, ozil, fortunis
    klose(c), negredo, almeida

    subs tzorvas, iniesta, arbeloa, alba

    if i do nothing (not that i can do anything ?!) now will the 2 non starters get subbed out and swapped

      As long as you don't make any subs or captain changes, the auto-subs will kick in.

    Are you doing Negredo->4.5m forward....I think Pedro is very likely to start in the final, and so thought I would just do Negredo->Pedro after the line-ups are out obviously. It will be be a waste of a precious transfer if I get Oliveria in.

        Why not just have 3 forwards? We'll know the lineup again, and then we can fill it with whoever is playing. Whether it's Germany/Italy + Spain, I think there will be 3 strikers playing for sure.

    Why all this talk about it being a mistake putting Ronaldo down for the last kick? They lost by 2 goals so, all things being equal, they would still have lost if he had gone earlier and scored.

    Whilst i see some logic in putting the best taker first for confidence, i can also see the logic of putting the most confident player on last, who is less likely to feel the pressure of the most pressured last kick.

      they didn't lose by 2 goals... because he didn't get to take the last kick...so if he had took the missed penalty & scored... it would have been equal... so yeah... you're wrong

        Yes but if they put the player that missed on last instead and he missed (ie all theings being equal) then they would still be out!! So no, i dont agree

          If my Aunt had a pair of balls she'd be my uncle... your logic is terrible. The point is, Ronaldo went for the "glory" penalty, and it backfired big time. and I'm glad, I hope he cries himself to death

      They lost by 2 goals with Spain having taken an extra penalty, so if Ronaldo had taken first and scored his they could've been on 4 from 4 by the time they reached the last one

        with a weaker taker still to come ie. the one that missed earlier is even more likely to miss the last one.

      It's just a waste that your best penalty taker does not get to take a penalty because you saved him. Plus if he had gone first they could have been ahead in the shoot out which would create pressure. Impressed with the centre backs as out of the 9 penalty takers 4 were the centre backs!

          McGurn, your original post was correct. Had CR had to take the 5th kick with the pressure on and he made it, his 5th position would have been hailed as a stroke of genius.

    Just tried doing some subs for the final (saved my wilcard) but no option for my wildcard
    I had saved it for the final, is the wildcard not available for the final or is it just a system error?

    finally decided not to waste a transfer on oliviera.....4 FTs are precious as they sound...wont be much...might need to take one hit anyways for the finals....so i'll try keeping it down to only -3 in that case...my rival's chasing me bad in my ML...not gonna make it easier than that for him....

    This 0:0 is worst result for my team. In my league leaders went for Portugal defense, so I went for Spanish to beat them. And did nothing to come any closer. Only hope is final now -.-
