Moving Target

Moving Target – Dimitar Berbatov

While many of the more established clubs failed to appease their fans on transfer deadline day, Martin Jol handed Fulham’s supporters plenty to cheer about with the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United. The Bulgarian moves to Craven Cottage on a two-year deal reportedly worth £5m and reunites with Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman at Tottenham:

Having been frozen out at United, the move gives Berbatov the chance to reignite his Premier League career after a difficult previous season harvested a mere five starts for the Old Trafford club. Knocking back a possible move to Serie A, with both Fiorentina and Juventus keen, the 31-year-old revealed his relief following completion of the transfer:

As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can’t wait to get started.

The Statistics

Berbatov’s career began in his native country where, after scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the Pirin Blagoevgrad reserves as a youth, he was snapped up by CSKA Sofia. Making his debut as an 18-year-old, his step up to top level football was seamless, with 26 goals in 49 league games over two-and-a-half seasons at the club before Bayer Leverkusen came calling midway during the 2000-01 campaign.

Berbatov spent six years with the Bundesliga outfit and, while the first half of his tenure was relatively successful with 11 goals and nine assists from 54 appearances, the latter part was outstanding – his final 100 games in Germany harvested 57 goals and 24 assists before Tottenham came calling in May 2006. The Bulgarian’s time at White Hart Lane lasted just a couple of seasons, though; striking up a partnership with Robbie Keane, he flourished under Jol first time round with 27 goals and 15 assists in 69 league games and was snapped up by United on transfer deadline day in a sensational £30m swoop.

Of his four seasons at Old Trafford, only one – the 2010-11 campaign – can be classified as a real success from a personal perspective. With 20 goals that term, Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in the top-flight, with the particular Fantasy highlight being a five-goal haul against Steve Kean’s Blackburn in November 2010. Edged towards the periphery last term, with Danny Welbeck preferred as Wayne Rooney’s regular partner, Berbatov’s fate was finally sealed this summer after the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. His record at United stands at 48 goals and 20 assists from 108 league appearances and, with seven goals in 12 games last term, it’s clear he’s far from a finished Fantasy force.

The Prospects

Judging by Fulham’s form under Jol last term, it could well be that Berbatov’s potential is mainly restricted to home games. While the Cottagers racked up 36 goals at home in 2011-12 – only three less than Spurs and Arsenal – they were dire on their travels, scoring 12 times away from home all season. It was a situation that, to a certain extent, made Clint Dempsey a frustrating purchase, though the US international more than made up for his away blanks with goals aplenty at home.

At present, it’s too early to judge what role Berbatov will be handed for his new club. His creativity could make him the ideal foil for Mladen Petric, with the Bulgarian positioned in “the hole” behind but, with Hugo Rodallega also coming into the equation, Jol’s intentions are still unclear. The former Wigan man was handed the full 90 minutes at West Ham last weekend, while Berbatov replaced Petric at the break; the latter, of course, has already produced in his only home game this season and is far and away the most popular of the three across the Fantasy games.

Penalty duties look up for grabs, with Berbatov perhaps first in line to prosper. Last season’s number one and two, Danny Murphy and Dempsey, have now moved on and the Bulgarian’s nonchalance from the spot would certainly boost his appeal. Reasonable prices of 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game are also likely to tempt further – particularly at home, Jol will be relying on Berbatov to bring a spark of real quality to his attack as the Cottagers readjust to life without Dempsey and Moussa Dembele.

With five goals in their opening home fixture compared to two in two matches on the road, the Cottagers seem to have quickly settled into a repeat pattern of last season. The chance for points looks good, then, ahead of home clashes against West Brom and Villa in the next six, while away trips to (wig, sot, rdg) are as kind a run as Jol could wish for. Certainly, with Berbatov on board, it’s a schedule that Fulham won’t be approaching with any lack of confidence.

Need some help with my defence,

    Cole / Walker / Hangeland / Simpson / McCartney

I was thinking of bringing in attacking defenders like Boyce, Ridgewell and Baines. I'm probably going to get rid Walker and Cole as I can't justify their price at the moment. Any recommendations for my defence?

OK. Then Walker & Cole -> Baines & Boyce/Ridgewell/Cuellar could do it.
Don't know how much it makes sense to pay more for an attacking defender if you don't intend to play him every week.

This has compromised their attacking game a bit. It's clear that they are playing a much more patient game and letting Santi have much of the ball to make runs along with Podolski. If they adapt their style a bit more it could prove really successful. I really like Arsenal this year I've gotta say.

He's hardly a surprise package, any time he's allowed go forward he comes up with a goal or an assist. I'm always more surprised at how many people go for him. I had him at the start of last season and he let me down. It's all to do with how Mancini plays the game. I think this season could see Yaya get more attacking freedom because of his heroics at the end of last season. It's frustrating though because one week he'll be played as much more defensive and get you 2's because of this. Nasri on the other hand is just as frustrating and Silva is a no-go at his price and his current state of fitness/form.

    Kagawa/Michu/Barfa/YaYa
    Tevez/Ade/Hazard

I have 8.5 in the bank. It's pretty much enough to upgrade to any player I want except RVP. Would you leave the team alone or upgrade someone, and if so, who?

Rules are fairly similar to the Sky game. Only real differences are the pricing structure and the positions of some of the players. Quite a few guys that you have listed as Midfielders are listed as Forwards in our game

No hits, as many transfers as you want, there must be a really good reason why you can't get RVP 🙂

Is that Swansea's Davies? If it doesn't cost anything you might as well get Rangel over him, wouldn't bother with the other 2 at the minute.

Yeah, that good reason is that, in our game, RVP is currently priced at 30.5, and that 8.5 that I have isn't enough to upgrade any of my 3 forwards to get him.

                    Yes, It is Swansea's Davies

    Cazorla, Pienaar, Noble, Britton, Bale,
    RVP, Tevez, Pog.

Can't help but feel ditching Kags after the last game is a vast overreaction. Definitely a picture building up that he struggles when others cut into his space (Welbeck on LW for eve, sot as well as Rooney playing deep in eve ) but thrives when he plays with real wingers on both sides (FUL where he played well and scored). I'm sure SAF isn't blind to this and will seek to utilize him properly. Particularly as Wigan is a home match, I'm happy to hold Kags for it and see how the situation develops. Not kneejerking him out based on one poor tactical performance... from SAF 😉

Last home game he was inches away from getting 2 goals. And before he came off against Southampton he had a decent run and shot. He's being rotated because of the way the man utd games have panned out. Man Utd have started so poorly despite the 6 points. Sign of champions and all that...but they've been really shaky and nervous. I'd expect Kagawa to come alive a bit more once Man Utd solve their problems elsewhere, namely getting their defence back in order/fit.

I agree, I think it's a kneejerk and home is where he's most impressed so why would you get rid for Wigan...it's a bad time to jump ship for sure.

Welbeck may have been nominally a LW, but on offense he was always moving into the center. There were a number of times Kagawa was forced to the wing by Walbeck clogging the middle.

That's exactly the point - he was meant to play wing and didn't, so Kags couldn't play in the hole!

Once they stop faffing about with this Welbeck at "left wing" experiment and let Kagawa do his job I think we'll see his real self, the Fulham self.

It was more like Evra was operating as the Left-Winger, while Welbeck moved into the middle with Kagawa also moving slightly to the right, clogging up the right hand side and leaving so much space for a counter attack down the United left.

That comes out great in the compare tool, posted on that last night. Kagawa deep right shift is clear.

Worst of both worlds to play like that IMO.

          Evra defensive susceptibility is exposed
          Kagawa is compromised
Welbeck is playing outside his favoured position too

    Morning!

Can anyone confirm if Noble still a penalty taker for West Ham? That could be the only reason that I might keep him despite his price drop to happen in a few hours. Btw, which is best route to improve?

    B: noble -> Maloney
    C: noble -> sterling .. spend 0.5m elsewhere

I'd avoid C myself no matter how encouraging his performance have been. Comes down to WHU vs WIG i suppose. Who do you fancy to do better over the next few GWs? I'd go with Nolan myself even though Maloney is on pens (when that Spanish fella isn't on the pitch anyway).

I don't think Sterling will continue to start regularly and West Ham to do better too..
Umm.. What's about this? Are you still preferred Nolan?

        A: noble -> Nolan
B: noble -> Matt Taylor .. and Zabaleta -> Baines

I have money in the bank exactly to do the Baines transfer or upgrade to Nolan. I'm not sure which way is better..

Sterling is risky and may just need a transfer later. Nolan looked good this weekend, and could benefit points-wise with Carroll in the side. I've had Maloney since the beginning, it was nice to see him get a penalty!

Looks good, similar to what I was looking at for my WC team. I might be tempted to downgrade Dembele to a Maloney or other 5m option and upgrade Nolan to Pienaar or another 7m midfielder....or just keep the cash handy in case you want to upgrade a defender. Dembele is a great player but not sure about his points return

Dembele not a good fantasy pick. Defense needs at least one stud. Downgrade Dembele to a cheap 5th mid and upgrade Gibbs to Baines. Baines is essentially a mid who could get a clean sheet

Cheers guys. I think Nolan is solid. Dembele I'm open to downgrade to help out with defence. Don't think it'll stretch to Baines though unless I downgrade someone else. Maybe Foster.

Think the key is to start with Hazard / Cazorla / Michu / RVP / Tevez and build best you can around that.

He's the ONLY Arsenal attacker that has any attraction but i'm finding his price tag a big problem. Directly affecting my choice of 3rd striker which i think is absolutely critical right now.

It's basically Tevez, RVP and one other. If you can get that 'one other' right it'll be a huge differential

I totally agree, and I struggle with that position as well.

The one who has caught my attention lately is Pogrebnyak. Comes in at 4.9m now and should be their main man. Enough cheaper than the other decent options to make him an option.

That said I'll probably stick with bloody Danny Graham for some games more. Eww.

lol i was just playing around and Pog is just about the only viable option at that price. Trouble is it feels very wrong to have him taking up one of my precious striker spots. I want those 3 guys playing every week and i reckon i'd struggle to pick Pog most weeks. It does allow for a killer midfield though... Cazorla-Michu-Hazard-HBA-Nolan

I am looking at Lambert. I like to be able to put my third striker out there every game and not worry about who the opponent is. Doesn't matter if the team wins or loses as long as the striker has the capability to score. Lambert has shown that he can score against the Manchester teams. Good enough for me to have him as the third striker.

I like the thinking. Makes very good sense. I'd have to downgrade my defence a bit i think to afford that but it's doable (i'm on a WC) and i'd certainly rather have Lambert than Pogrebnyak.

wild carded yesterday and set for 6 price rises... is it worth bringing nolan in tonight for cazorla and hope he double rises before cazorla does and thus makes me .1 and then i can swap him back for cazorla in a few days or just before a cazorla price rise

If you've wildcarded it's worth bringing in anyone for now who is set to price rise....then swap to the team you actually want to go forward with nearer the start of the game week.

Nolan would have to rise 0.2 before Cazorla rises 0.1 for that to work.

Providing you're going to monitor it nightly you've got nothing to lose by trying.

Good idea in theory, but it wont work because Cazorla is being transferred in quicker than Nolan.

I think I'm managing to stave off the wildcard demons, but if I id my team would probably be:

    Jaask / Begovic
    Baines / McCauley / Cuellar / Demel / Davis
    Hazard / Cazorla / Yaya / Michu / Kacalicinic
    RVP / Tevez / Lambert

Someone talk me out of it!!

I don't know if it's really worth a hit, Torres is up front in a good team and will get lucky goals because that's all he does is try to score and moan when he doesn't.

RE: Gargamel, just had a look at your team, harsh luck having De Gea and Jarvis last week, saw you made 1 transfer, Bale out? (excuse the pun)

Haha. Bit of a Bale out, yes. I got Cazorla in. Didn't really want to have to carry a 9.5m player who also dropped in price.

I blame bad luck for the Jarvis incident - this injury was reported nowhere and any player can have a training ground injury. The De Gea debacle was my own fault, I should've known that he would make a silly mistake and that SAF wouldn't have it. Can't wait to get rid of him.

The manchester teams and their rotation is the worst, I can't believe I temporarily forgot pre-season how much mancini plays around with his defence. I went for Lescott and he's just not worth it, keeping him for one more game but definitely downgrading soon. It was hard to predict De Gea would be dropped after only 2 games. But looking at it now it's best to jump ship on De Gea if you can long term. Are you WC'ing?

I've considered it yesterday and today, but I think I'll stick with my boys a while longer. If it's necessary I'll take a hit or two to stay afloat, but I think the team is strong enough to save the wildcard a bit. If I have international injuries too I'll have to do it.

I don't really think this is a great time to wildcard unless you have to, so I'd rather save it for a time I feel fixtures 'switch' for more teams.

Ye I think your team looks fine for the moment, plus you have RVP so you don't need to make any drastic changes to get him in. I'm in a more precarious position of possibly avoiding RVP and hoping I can ride my luck for a week or so. I'm certainly not very happy with my defence and GIROUD! (don't ask) I feel like WC'ing right now purely to get in RVP and value would prove regrettable if it doesn't pay off immediately. If things go pear-shaped GW4 I will seriously consider WCing but right now I'm happy to have just made the move to get Hazard in. I'm pretty confident a bit of luck will see me through the sticky patch. For some reason I just can't convince myself WCing right now is a good idea for me. Everyone will have roughly the same team and you might be in an advantageous position to still have it in a months time. Here's hoping...best of luck to ya.

Oh, ah, yes I understand. Good enough reasoning. Might want to avoid watching the United game then ;). Giroud should score this weekend I'd say. Going long term without RVP is a gamble still, hmmm.

Oh I've got to go to bed, my thoughts are coming out all at the same time. Good night and goo dluck.
