The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Everybody Hurts

It didn’t take long. As the template squad took shape over the international break, it has taken just one day of Gameweek 4 for it to show cracks.

The script seemed very unlikely. Robin Van Persie rested. Carlos Tevez withdrawn on the hour mark. Eden Hazard and Michu traveling home empty-handed. Santi Cazorla delivering just a single assist amongst an Emirates goal glut. Form was on their side but today’s failure of fancied “big guns” offered a rapid reminder just how fickle Fantasy fortunes can be.

To compound matters, some notable differentials stepped up. Dimitar Berbatov delivered on his full debut. Steven Fletcher scored his third goal in two games. Gervinho tempted us with a brace as the Gunners ran riot and, in the same match, Lukas Podolski notched his second in consecutive matches. We just need the likes of Gareth Bale and Nikaca Jelavic to break the shackles and we’ll have real movement; real discontent amongst the pack who threw Wildcards at the two-week break only to find the humblest of returns at the end of the rainbow.

It was inevitable that the cast would be extended, that we’d have new names to add to our watchlists and edge their way into our thinking. The failure for the early season form players will doubtless spark reaction – the pace of Berbatov’s bandwagon will be interesting and likely to be fuelled by those looking for an immediate fix to a hugely disappointing day.

Of course there should be faith that class will win through, that today’s events will be a rarity, but the timing is poor. Having procrastinated and tinkered over the break, the expectations were high and that will doubtless find knees jerking and cats kicked. For the majority, it’s been a day to forget but then perhaps we got what we deserved.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Jaaskelainen
Cuellar, Hughes, Clark, Rangel, (Mariappa - 3.9)
Yaya Toure, Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, (Gunnarsson - 4.3)
    Berbatov, Van Persie, Tevez

    2.8 mil in the bank.

tooked my free transfer on Berbs

    have on mind:

    1. Sterling instead of Gunnarsson
    2. HBA instead for Gunnarsson but that required -8 hit, which means Cuellar out for Gorkss

The second option looks fine in principle but you'd have way too much money on the bench so, of the two, I'd go for the first option (though Guthrie and Maloney are also good low price options). Then use the money to upgrade a defender.

I see more tears on the horizon.....

Once Aguero's back proper it might be a bit harder to keep RVP with that price and all the other options. He might not even be on penos now.

You would imagine RVP will still feature for Utd up front most every week.

Rooney likely to drop deeper in the hole behind him in exactly the same way he did when he and Hernandez were flavour of the month with SAF.

RVP will be subject to the same rotation risks as Man City players I would imagine. Arsenal and Chelsea have fewer options so their strikers may be less prone to rotation, possibly?

Last offensive player to touch it. According to rules I think that's his assist.

As long as they are consistent with it then no one really minds if its a bit iffy. Same as Sterling's assist I think, no?

Morning all repost from the deadzone, hoping for bit of feedback i have reluctantly hit the wc button after today I realised my team was a sorry state of affairs
    Ddg/Fed
    Cuellar/Clyne/Zabaleta/Demel/Cole
    Michu/Cazorla/Hazard/Noble/Kacaniklic
    Rvp/Tevez/Graham

I wanted to hold on till the next international break but seeing how people didn’t make the money they expected to and looking at my team I felt action had to be taken, my current draft looks like this

    Jaask/Beg
    Baines/Davis/Ridgewell/Clark/Hughes
    Michu/Cazorla/Hazard/Pienaar/Sterling
    Rvp/Tevez/Berba

Sorry for the long winded post but would really welcome some suggestions on this proposed team, and possible ways to improve it, slightly worried about the defence. I could stick with Kacaniklic instead of Sterling or downgrade to Gutherie and upgrade Clark to a 4.5?

      Next week you can play

      DDG

Cole - Clyne - Zaba (Clyne if Zaba doesnt play)

      Michu - Cazorla - Hazard - Kaca

      RVP - Tevez - Graham

And that's even without using a transfer, which could be DDG -> Foster or Zaba - Ridgewell, to mention a couple. I see absolutely no reason to WC this now.

No worries, I wanted to hold on but by the time the international break comes round I think
Quite a few of my proposed players would be too, expensive to bring in, therefore my wildcard team would prob be better now than if I was to wait. What are your thoughts on Kacaniklic or Sterling? Or go with Gutherie and a 4.5 instead of Clark?

I'm probably too late here, but I think I prefer Kaca if you don't have Berbs, as he's likely to get more minutes imo. I kind of like Clark myself. And Guthrie. The 4.5-decision is actually pretty hard now. I have Maloney myself, but I'd be willing to have a 4.5 myself and rotate them.

I don't like Baines and another Everton mid. Just Baines or Pienaar for me.

I also still think Guthrie offers the best cheapie mid as he is guaranteed for gametime and is on Reading set pieces. At just 17 yrs old Sterling is not going to play a full 38 game season, or anywhere near. Kaca is not guaranteed to start on any given gameweek.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd appear to be the best CS options at the moment so I would dg Baines to one of their nailed on defs. Clark is OK as far as cheapies go as he will get you a few cleanies and the odd goal/assist so he's worth keeping.

He remains under the radar due to Liverpool's slow start - plus the fixtures weren't great - Arsenal at home and Sunderland away brought one goal for Liverpool - that was pretty predictable. We have him climbing in the Watchlist this week and there's an article on the way - he won't stay under the radar for much longer.

Well, if yesterday was a sign of things to come ( and I'm sure it was ), then how about this WC team-

    Foster Begovic

    Vidic Baines Gibbs Demel Gorkss

Hazard Santi Cazorla Ben Arfa Michu Yaya

    Tevez Berbatov Lambert

0.4 in the bank. Berbs & Lambert rotate home and away. Play 3-5-2 every week. Goalies rotate and are nailed on, ditto defenders. I really like this.

I didn't say I was going to do it but it's mighty tempting. I mean, how many games is RVP going to sit out or make a 10 minute cameo when Rooney is back? And what happens at Christmas when they have to play 5 games in 10 days or whatever it is? There's no way RVP will play them all, just like Rooney didn't last year.....

I brought RVP in for this week as a much needed captain choice, I feel very let down by the whole thing...

It is situations like this that have me doubting his ability to justify a 13.5m price tag...

      Rotate defenders?

Surely you would play Baines, Gibbs and Vidic every week??? That doesn't seem like a bad shout then as the other defs are only £4.0m ones so easy to leave them on the bench.

Strong midfield too and 3 decent strikers.

I actually like it and its nice to see a non template team!!!

Sorry Nomar, I guess it wasn't clear. I just meant play Vidic, Baines & Gibbs every week, plus the five mids and rotate Berbs and Lambert. It doesn't have to be those exact players of course, depending on form and fixtures, but I was looking at finding a different template to the one that is prevalent now.
I like the 5 big midfielders approach and having guaranteed starting defenders that can pretty much be played in any fixture. The forwards are the problem though and the amount of budget that RVP takes up. Someone has to be dropped from the front 8 every week and it strikes me as daft that many people have Guthrie or someone on the bench to afford a third striker like Graham or whatnot when you could bench a striker and have a much stronger midfielder in his place.
I'm going to have a play around with this later to see if I can make a better combination.

Hehe...in the same boat. I need a cleanie from Reading and then Baines and Pienaar to catch fire. Sitting on a something awful but philosophical about it - still early days and I'm still shaping the team up. Slightly regret not playing the WC last week now though - the team I had in place would have done rather well this week - sneaky Granville might have known what he was doing talking me out of it.

I am very glad I never played my WC last week, Mark. Took an 8 pt hit for RVP but still rather I did that than use my free WC.

3 weeks does not produce a large enough amount of data to completely revamp your team, in my opinion. The next international break, GW8 is a much better time as lineups will be more settled then and you get a better idea of the consistent performers.
