Scout Report – Matija Nastasic

Roberto Mancini returned to his native Italy on transfer deadline day to plunder Serie A club Fiorentina for the services of Matija Nastasic. The highly-rated centre-half moves to the Etihad for an undisclosed fee, with Stefan Savic moving the other way as part of the deal.

In his first interview since joining the club, the 19-year-old Serbian spoke of his determination to quickly adapt to his new environment.

When I started to play in Italy I needed some time to adjust, for sure. But I’d made an extra effort to limit this period of change to a minimum and I’m hoping to do the same in England even though the style of football is different from Italy.

The Statistics

Nastasic’s career began in Serbia in the 2009-10 campaign when he was loaned out to at FK Teleoptik Zemun by parent club Partizan Belgrade. The centre-half went on to play 21 times over two seasons for the lower league side but he failed to make a single first-team appearance for Partizan before they sold him to Fiorentina in 2011. Nastasic – nicknamed “the new Nemanja Vidic” – turned out 25 times for the Serie A outfit in 2011-12 and also found the net on a couple of occasions – he featured in the club’s opener this season before Mancini came calling at the end of August.

The Prospects

Although there’s no such thing as a nailed-on City defender aside from Vincent Kompany, Nastasic’s prospects are perhaps not as bad as bad as many fear. First of all, the six foot one defender is more than familiar operating as part of a three-man defence; the majority of his appearances for Fiorentina came within such a system and with Mancini utilising a 3-4-1-2 as a tactical alternative this term, he offers the champions greater mobility at the back than the now-departed Savic.

Also, the club’s Champions League schedule may help him domestically. A group that pits City against Real Madrid, Ajax and Dortmund is unlikely to see Mancini take any chances at the back – given his penchant for rotation, it may well be that he keeps Nastasic for league games as he eases into the first-team fold, with home clashes in particular, a better source of game time. A berth on the left of the three, with compatriot Alex Kolarov on the left of midfield could help make the transition a little easier; Saturday’s game at Stoke saw three of Mancini’s four summer signings handed a starting role, suggesting there will be plenty opportunity to stake a claim as the City boss utilises his squad around the European schedule.

At 5.5 in FPL and 5.0 in the Sky Sports game, Nastasic is relatively cut-price amongst the City backline but his acquisition – like the majority of his defensive team mates – will always carry a degree of uncertainty. Mancini has already been quick to rotate at the back – only Kompany has started the four league games so far, yet Joleon Lescott and Gael Clichy both still have over 10% ownership in FPL. Mancini’s next few team sheets should give us an idea of his thinking and certainly if Nastasic earns some starts he could be a real punt, though the risk of rotation will no doubt deter the vast majority.

I've got MOTD2 recorded to watch later on, but would appreciate the views of people who watched the match: did Spurs (and Bale in particular) look to have turned a corner, or were they just playing a poor Reading side? Bale's goal looked scrappy, but I wonder if the confidence boost will mean he goes on a run now. Seriously thinking of a knee-jerky Cazorla->Bale move this week.

Spurs looked decent IMO, but Reading did stand off them way too much.

As a Bale owner, it was still inconclusive with regards to the long-term I'm afraid.

Spurs looked ok but Reading were very poor. Bale was barely involved in the match, Lennon was the bright spark. Personally, i would stick with Cazorla.

Spurs looked a bit more organised and purposeful in attack, they seemed to have something approaching a plan. There's cause for cautious optimism in defence too, this run of leaking very late goals can't last. Personally I didn't think Bale looks the biggest threat for Spurs whilst Defoe remains first choice, and his goal was a complete and total fluke, he should pick up points but Cazorla to Bale feels retrograde to me.

Good point - Bale is nowhere near as dangerous as he would be if he had Ade to aim at and make inter-play with.

Defoe shows no intention of passing to anybody when near the 18 yard box.

I liked the siggy chance. Defoe ran and ran then realised he had nowhere to go, stopped in utter confusion, took a breath, looked up and then passed to Siggy.

both caused their win, Reading didnt play for a whole month and their defence(especially their keeper) were horrible, so many mistakes, but Spurs also played quite well

Only watched the second half, and am a long time sceptic of AVB, but to be fair Spurs played well. Passing was very fluid and they were efficient in the second half. Bale didn't look involved much to me apart from one lung bursting run down the left, remains to be seen to me if playing in the centre really plays to his strengths. Dembele - Sandro - Siggy midfield may be gelling. Defence was largely solid but switched off at the end, typical. Playing a deep line, maybe AVB is learning.

That said Reading did look totally championship.

The first half was very different defensively - they were playing a frighteningly high line for the first half hour but they seemed to be pulling it off and dominating possession.

Ah it's falling into place now. See you'll remember Reading were having a spell of possession early in the second half, when Spurs switched to a deep line and stood off them. Whereas with the high line it was the reverse in the first half. I gotta say the central defence largely cleared their lines well.

Bit of both. Reading were pretty bad but by the same token this was much closer to a 4-3-3 that AVB wants (evidenced by Sandro and Dembele putting in a superb blend of attacking runs, hard graft and positioning in the centre). I didn't think Bale looked great but he's the only one I'd consider currently from Spurs attack. Wouldn't do that move.

Bale will outscore Cazorla over the course of the season, but I guess we all knew that anyway. I think this will be the confidence booster (scuffed or not) that will set Bale off on one of his scoring runs now. Just a shame I got rid of him!

One assist in a six goal romp (and even that was accidental!) does not bode well - he won't get that many opportunies to be involved in most games. He is a great player just maybe won't translate into as many FPL points as it should

The creative player tends to get bypassed in goal rampages. You dont need creativity to break Reading, so why not just dribble past on your own?

We shall see. I probably have to make a decision of bringing in either Cazorla or Bale for Hazard in a couple of weeks, and I'm not counting either out - but the Cazorla/Fabregas comparison is definitely a factor.

There's a feeling that M'Bia is first choice when he's fit and that will be soon. Gorkss is reasonably nailed on and also carries goal threat.

Sorry, poorly worded - M'Bia may be first choice over Nelsen which would make Gorkss the best 3.9er

Don't ditch Guthrie just because of one game (played after a month without a game for Reading). Kaca is likely to be rotated, especially for away games. Sterling is still very young and Rodgers has already said that he needs to be careful with him.

Thing is, Rodgers can say that all he wants, but who else is there? Downing is likely to be Borini's replacement, only other one is Assaidi, who hasn't been given a crack yet (and if he is, its probably going to be in the Europa League).

I'd be looking at your def for the next few GW's - are you happy with three from your five for the next few GW's?

I've a similar defence to you and i'm getting the jitters

FWIW I already have Sterling but their fixtures are gash so I am expecting nothing

If you've got absolutely no other issues, possibly, but even then its debatable as those two are more a rotation risk than Guthrie - I like my "5th midfielder" to be nailed on so that he's there when I need him!

Its a great series - first thing I've watched where the central character is a likeable serial killer! Good storyline, good dialogue, good action and a lot of humour as well - can't go wrong at that price - might put it on my Xmas list!

While I recommend getting no Milan players in UCL, this seasons Milan punt is Acerbi at 4.5m in the defence. I do not have confidence in this going well like Nocerino in the knockouts last season.

He has his suitors every year, but his prospects are entangled with Liverpool's, and until they can demonstrate a bit of a solidity he's not going to seem a credible big money pick for most.

        I can handle the odd crappy gameweek, but I'm annoyed at the fact that I've failed to learn from my mistakes. After last year I vowed not to do the following;

Have Charles N'Zogbia anywhere near my team
Have Adel Taraabt anywhere near my team
Not to buy Danny Graham - however logical it might seem
Not to invest in Man City and Man United defences early on
Not to judge Bale on his early season form
        Not to Wildcard early

        And yet, guess what?
