Vidic Blow for United

Manchester United have this afternoon confirmed Nemanja Vidic is set to be sidelined for around eight weeks. The Serbian missed Sunday’s trip to Liverpool and while reports had initially suggested he would return for this weekend’s home showdown with Tottenham, they have proven to be way off the mark, as the club announced:

“Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks. Sir Alex, as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem. The central defender was operated on this week and will be sidelined for about eight weeks.”

It’s a bitter blow for Ferguson as his side square up to a run of fixtures that pit them against four of last season’s top six in the next five Gameweeks. Faith in the United backline has been dented by a single clean sheet accrued in the opening first five matches and today’s news will only lessen confidence in their ability to nullify opponents.

It’s perhaps a worry for Rafael’s newly-acquired owners – the right-back has been transferred in by over 31,000 FPL managers in the Gameweek so far, second only to Leighton Baines for defenders. If the right-back is to prosper, he’ll likely need to continue the attacking output that has so far harvested two goals in four starts – a tough ask, with games against Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal on the horizon.

The Vidic news will – once again – promote Jonny Evans in our thinking. The Irishman benefitted from his skipper’s absence last term and looks set to establish himself as a regular in the first XI until the Serbian is ready to return. Bearing in mind that Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are still injured, there’s virtually no competition for Evans or Rio Ferdinand to worry about. Intriguingly, the two centre-halves and Rafael all come in under 6.0 in FPL – with starts looking assured and rotation threats in goal and at left-back, they seem nailed-on until Ferguson’s injury worries begin to ease.

With a threadbare backline that has struggled so markedly to produce clean sheets, it may well be that Ferguson has no option but to go on the attack in order to win games right now. If the same defensive pattern continues, returns at the back could well be minimal – such a scenario would place even greater reliance on Robin Van Persie and co to produce the goods up top, as United look to ride out what is a potentially difficult period.

Michu's got two cracking home fixtures coming up and is basicallly playing up front. If you've had him from the start it'd be crazy to ditch him.

I'm not a big fan of the heavy front 8. I think you need one bench-able cheapie rather than figuring out who to bench each week. I also think it limits you if you want to upgrade one of the cheaper MF/FW's since the cash is tied up.

I'd go either Michu or Hazard to someone like sterling and then just sit on the cash for a rainy day

i don't think so, City have got great fixtures coming up. Even if he comes on as a late sub in some of them, there's still a lot of scope for points.

Opinions on Aguero as a differential?

I am almost set on bringing him in for Tevez on Saturday evening. H is nearly always a captaincy option and the money saved on RVP is massive. The difference in price between Tevez and Aguero is now minimal and Aguero is more explosive.

But dead team usually have the expensive guys starting. We have seen plenty of dead top 1000 teams. And the percentage is the same with every player. Check Stevie G at 3.7 now that is good LIV cover if you wanna go expensive.

Yeah but I'm assuming your aim is for a good end rank to win MLs rather than caring overly about individual GW ranks right?
There will be no dead teams in the top 1000 by the end of the season.

I agree with what you are saying but the way I would look at it is the players who are high owned at the beginning will end up being kept with a lot of ownership from dead teams. Suarez is one of these; Shawcross another. However a player like Felliani at 26% had low ownership at the beginning and is a much owned player by people who are actively playing the game; Michu is another.

So to finish off Shawcross, despite high ownership, would actually be a differential. Whereas Jenkinson, with a lower ownership, is far less of a differential.

Good point actually both you guys, but a case with only a few players. And even good players seem to go for Suarez with good fitures despite Gerrard at 3% a much better option even with higher ownership.

Considering him. With RVP and Aguero you barely have to think about captaincy if you assume that Aguero will start the majority of PL games even around CL fixtures.

This was my initial aim but by picking up Aguero you can pick up a captain and cover some risk. Suarez (or other) allows a very tidy midfield. Aguero and RVP doesnt leave a lot of money over (however I suppose Snodgrass, Nolan and Sterling could help cover the points at a cheap price).

I think Motty had it about right on Saturday when he eluded (spelling??) to the fact that Matta Hazard and Oscar all want to play as a number 10. Mata started the season very deep and hazard was a focal point but now Mata and Oscar seem to have decided that they want that role.

            10k, nice.

I'm keeping players until the launch, they go for double/treble/quadruple what they do the rest of the year on the opening weekend. Have a decent enough selling team. Szczesny Lindegaard Dunne rare Olsson rare Brown Evans Downing Carrick Palacios Fletcher Carrick Cleverley Borini Adrian

And another from OptaJoe, relevant to the subject matter of this article - and a bit surprising:

"64% - Manchester United's PL win percentage with Nemanja Vidic in the last two seasons, compared to 72% without him."

The worry is that Rio is injury prone (chronic, fairly minor back injury which often leads to other injuries as he compensates), Evans often picks up injuries and Smalling and Jones are both out.

have a good sub GK who can rotate with jussi

Improve on strikers and have at least one of big hits like RVP or Tevez

Decrease the amt of money spent on mids. Sell Cazorla or Yaya as they won't get you goals very often imo. Get someone like Kacaniklic or any other mid priced midfielder near 6.0 m

thanks for the advice, not going for rvpp due to cost and not going for tevez either due to mancini unpredicability and aguero coming back. was thinking the same with the midfield but had the money do thought i might aswell go big

similar points scored and Lambert has had very tough fixtures. plus on pens/freekicks and not really subject to rotation.
