The ScoutCast – Episode Eighty Four – Santigold

Out of his pajamas and back in the studio, Granville and I reconvene after another dull international break to resume ScoutCast duties.

Arsenal’s new playmaker dominates, with the pair of us coveting Santi Cazorla’s charms and competing for his affections, whilst, in the back of our minds, wondering if we’re being taken in.

Robin Van Persie also gets some oxygen – don’t worry, that’s not oxygen treatment – he’s just the subject of this week’s discussion as we chew the fat on the “essential” debate that appears to rage on as the Gamweek’s roll by. The regulars all find their place amongst the merriment, as heat is turned up on the mini-league and mini-game struggle between myself and Mancunian magic man.

Grab the fools gold via this link, or stream it now via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Which 2 defenders would you play from
    Cuellar Rangel Boyce Demel

On Rangel and Boyce for the attacking points, but maybe I should play Cuellar over one of the two as they've failed me so badly recently...

Range and Boyce, for me. Can see Swansea and Newcastle scoring so go with the attacking threat. Not sure if Demel will start.

      Boyce & Cuellar/Rangel.

Wigan are weak in the left of their defence so Rangel could take advantage, although Sunderland have conceded just one goal at home all season. And this is of course, Boyce's week 😉

Yeah I would agree with weakness on the Wigan left with gametime issues for Beausejour and Figueroa not looking like the man.

Rangel was looking so good until the wheels came off the Swansea defence with Naylor getting eliminated and Chico sent off. I thought he was a big attacking threat, might have to go back to the stats and look again...

Ok I feel a knee-jerk for Riise coming on...I see a 30 yarder free-kick in front of me...3 Baps and an assist for a Berba penalty...

or just keep Gibbs for Arsenal's good run of fixtures...hmmm can I afford to be this patient....

Podolski if he was classed as a midfielder, so has to be Giroud seeing as most of the chances should drop his way.

If we go by the fantasy logic of "play against Norwich", then maybe I could do the totally unexpected and high risk move of Suarez > Giroud (C) and Hazard > Cazorla for a 4pt hit. If Arsenal do thrash Norwich, the hit will definitely be paid off and I suspect several times over. IF.

Had mixed views on this last night - which do you guys think is best option? Have been on A) all week, but no Arsenal coverage for Norwich is really tempting me with B!

    (A)
    GW8: Save
    GW9: Michu & Suarez -> Santi & Berba

    (B)
    GW8: Tevez -> Giroud
    GW9: Michu & Suarez -> i) Walters & Aguero, or ii) Santi & Ba (4 pointer)

    Jaask, (Federici)
    Baines, Hughes, Cuellar, (McCartney), (Clyne)
    Bale, Barfa, Michu, Pienaar, (Guthrie)
    RVP(c), Suarez, Tevez

I scrolled down to bottom of page to see what was current and I saw this.

My view on this_____ Bale expected a clatter from keeper__just like someone who would raise his hand to your face and give you a false slap______you would flinch!

I don't blame him getting out of the way of that challenge especially as what has happened to him before! nearly ended his career etc.

If he planted his leg on the turf and the keeper went through with his false WHACK!___then it coulda been a leg breaker____woulda prefered Bale to jump over challenge though rather than go down like a sack of spuds.

In the crux of dives though I would say that was a 2/5

Where as (i won't mention names) if they do a 5/5=Cheating fookers BAN THEM

I think my frustration over the last few weeks has been playing teams that look good "on paper" but get very disappointing points. It really took the piss last week when I scored below the average LOL. I think the fact is that the upside of players is much lower than we think. Most of the time it's smaller things like CS and captaincy that decide good and bad weeks.

True, plus I think patience plays a big part. Rarely do we transfer in a 'bad' player. They come good if you're prepared perhaps, to wait for the 'nice' fixtures to pass. That's the hard part.

Finally listening to the scoutcast and have got to say...totally agree with some of the stuff Mark and Granville are talking about when it comes to 'spreading the value' without RVP.

This is something that was in my head all week...when people question RVP's 'value' because his PPG might not be exactly equal to what you'd expect of his price tag...I think that is missing the point. What he gives you...or at least you hope he gives you is value in regular POINTS. There will no doubt be players who show far better value than RVP over the season but are these gems going to be as easy to predict? No...and the reason is that involves a lot of luck. However, we all know how good RVP is and can be as an FPL player in terms of consistency. And therefore the risk is in theory much lower than spreading your cash across the team on various punts.

Buying a 9m+ Midfielder and a mid-priced striker because you've sold RVP does not give you better value necessarily. You have to have faith in that expensive midfielder and like they say about Bale..players like him are likely to let you down with the captaincy...And then you have your mid-priced striker who you will be always nervous captaining.

RVP may not be this year's main man but for the moment you have to believe if you have him that he will be worth the cash because of the points he stands to get you from a 20-30 goal season. Having that extra 4/5m to splash on your midfield/defence does not represent better value unless it yields points for you consistently...which is the name of the game.

To me the easy answer is to give each player a value of zero, then make a list of the players you would most want in your team in order of preference..

Nice idea, and as a bit of a purist I like to think the same kind of way. Let's be honest too we all have our preferences and biases. I had RVP right from the start last year and I never looked back...I have faith in his magical powers. And most of all, I got burned by bastards like Suarez..hence why I avoid like the plague...sure I missed out on 20 points but am I particularly sorry for that? No because at that moment I would never have made such a wild punt on a player I had bad memories of. Cest la Vie...

Agree with your thinking, we haven't got a crystal ball, however the one advantage of having RVP is if he moves up a gear, which is probable, the people without him have a major problem. The 13mil I spent at the start, I have not had since, so I don't miss it. Should he not produce, I have that cash banked to use when I opt to wc.

If you're being dead serious here...I think RVP being bad value (which is perhaps inevitable considering the obscene price) is balanced out if you have a team of great value around him. Like you said...getting gems like Nolan/Morrison at the right time but still having other essential guys like Baines elsewhere.

      Ey up lad.

R, V and P, are three letters that I am growing tired of very quickly. I still have him until either tomorrow or most certainly next week. What concerns me is that I personally am only keeping him for Stoke this weekend and hoping for a 30/40 point return at captain. it's quite simple, he stays he captains, he goes I get in Santi, Berba and Ba/Ivano/Rafael and they return 30/40 points.

This goes with your breakdown of how RVP ownership works. Shit I don't even know where to go from here and im now babbling.

I do feel though, that there will be times where RVP only gets 20-30mins or comes off after an hour and doesn't return anything...hell, it could even be this week. It's those weekends like you mention where he does blow up and gets a hat trick and you miss out because you don't have him, and 80percent of your league does and you pray the rest of your team make up for it, however knowing full well that the other 10 people in their teams could include plenty of big point getters. He is just that one man that you either have or you dont.

ffs I am really babbling. Im done sorry.

No problem mate, I get what you're sayin'...

My main point is these so called alternatives to RVP are seen that way because of how the season has progressed so far. But we all know at the end of the day the manchester clubs score so many more than any others on most gameweeks. So when you're in doubt it's good to have the likes of RVP to sweep up when you're team is falling flat on it's feet. I may change my RVP rose-tinted glasses but I'll wait and see who is better to have faith in before making the move.

Hi Pinkfish. You should not need to download adblocker. Our agency should not be serving ads that deliver with audio on by default. We have previously taken them to task on this and they have assured us that this will no longer happen. If you, or any other user, is getting ads with audio blasting then I need to know about it.

I'll need details on what country you are based, how often these ads are being served, where on the site they are appearing (sidebar or header), whether they are loading as part of a sequence of ads.

Without such details I cannot get to the bottom of this. Rest assured I am upset and angered that this is still happening and need your help to get it sorted.

OK so the site owner wants to make bucks by having ads fair play but an audio is an invasion.

I don't want to have to do all that ad_blocking s*** or explain it to others who may not be so "comp wise".

I am looking to reshuffle my midfield and my forward line with the hope of getting Rooney into the Fold arnd gamweek 9 or 10. Following is my current team:

    Nani-Dyer-Michu-Mata-Kacaniklic

    Torres-Tevez-Lambert
    In the Bank= 1.6 m

I was thinking of either replacing Nani or Dyer for either Piennar/Gervinho/ Walters/ Morission. And eventually replacing Tevez witth Rooney.

Would appreciate your thoughts on it. Thanks

swans fixtures turn sour soon, id be dropping a swan, though nani is so pricey for a player not guaranteed starts.

id either do nani to santi or perhaps michu to pumpkinhead. i know folks like michu for the season, but there has been cheaper value found still out of the likes of dyer and routledge. by the way, I tried talking up routledge as a prospect after sinclair left, and was laughed at. whatever, what do i know.

    Hi-de-ho!

    Ive got Reina/Begovic

    Baines/Gibbs/Olsson/Demel/Gorkss

    1 FT, .1 in bank

Im bummed cause i was planning on dropping Reina next week, for McCarthy or Gazzaniga ;), freeing up a ton of cash and rolling with begovic until January. Im here to ask, whos safer to bring in? I dont know how long federici is out and i dont know if davis is in line to fight for his spot back.

If both were equal, id prefer Gaz, as i already have a reading defender.

as far as this week goes, with demel also a doubt, and having to play olsson v citeh or gorkss @ Anfield w/o gibbs, i suppose i need to drop gibbs.

Choices are Kolarov or Clichy? Evans? .1 short on Rafael 🙁 , Riise? for GIbbs.

or keep gibbs and drop olsson for Santon? Wisdom? Hangeland?

there. thats all im asking, now is anyone here.....

On wc and really fancy him hitting his stride, if he fails I won't be too upset. My vc will be berba who may not even play. If he doesn't produce the goods, having got 4 points on a captaincy will soften the blow of shipping him out for Ba in 2 weeks time.
