Captains

The Captain Poll – Gameweek 10

Maybe it’s written in the stars, or all over Arsene Wenger’s worry lines, but the fact is that the majority of us are backing Robin Van Persie to put his former club to the sword on Saturday. Having notched his third double figure return in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at Stamford Bridge last weekend, Van Persie has goals and confidence flowing through him and will come up against an Arsenal side struggling to come to terms with life without their talisman.

Robin Van Persie looks set to top our Captain poll (see homepage middle column) for the fourth time this season, with a healthy margin separating him from Tottenham’s Gareth Bale – his nearest rival so far. The Dutchman’s performances on winning our poll have been mixed to this point. While he fetched a goal and an assist to reward the faith in Gameweek 8, previously against Wigan in Gameweek 4 and Spurs in Gameweek 6, he mustered just a single assist.

Arsenal have conceded in their last three away trips, while United’s goal power looks to be bristling with Wayne Rooney operating off Van Persie, and Antonio Valenicia installed on the right to bring his reliable supply of crosses that have seen him fetch four assists in consecutive league starts. The odds looked piled against the Gunners, with Van Persie likely to be first in line to dish out the punishment.

Ironically, Van Persie will come up against last week’s poll winner – Santi Cazorla. The Spaniard returned just three points to reward a show of faith which saw 21% of our voters backing him for returns in the home clash with QPR. Cazorla’s humble tally lowered the average for the poll winner to 6.8 for the season and meant that we’ve seen just one double figure return since Gameweek 3 from the leading candidate.

Perhaps that will give some comfort to those who will go into the weekend without Van Persie, who perhaps are looking to back Gareth Bale, Juan Mata or Carlos Tevez. Those three are the main chasing pack right now but are trailing by some distance as the Dutchman dominates.

Bale continued his run of form with a opening goal in last night’s Capital One Cup defeat at Norwich, while Mata was forced to endure a full 120 minutes of action as Chelsea finally disposed of United in their ding-dong tie. Roberto Di Matteo has stressed that he will monitor his squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Swansea, although given his run of form, it’s pretty imaginable that Chelsea will start without him at the Liberty. Mata could, however, be handed limited pitch time, depending on how the match develops for Di Matteo’s side.

Carlos Tevez is perhaps the most intriguing alternative of our three in the chasing pack – his winning goal against Swansea was his first in six league matches but consistent assists and FPL bonus have kept him bubbling. The scene is set for Tevez to step into a cauldron at his former club West Ham this weekend, although with a critical Champions League tie with Ajax beckoning, we are, as always, left to second guess Roberto Mancini’s teamsheet intentions with his striking quartet all vying for starts.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    PLAYER NEWS

    Johnson (Doubtful)
    Ba (Doubtful)
    Wilson (Injured)
    Gibbs (Injured)

And still I feel good week. I don't why. Maybe its called karma 😛

P.S. No Persie but against Arsenal is not wise to have him imo. Too much emotions included in there and it will be close game

This is true! You can get by without Gibbs and Wilson for this gameweek at least. The majority of teams points come from only 3/4 players usually so probably best to save transfers and play 10 if Johnson isn't fit enough.

Who should I get rid off to get Bale in?

    a. Michu
    b. Pienaar

I was planning to replace Michu with Bale few weeks ago but his new role as lone striker last two weeks makes me reconsider it.

*the rest midfielder are Cazorla, Hazard, and Puncheon also 3.3 in the bank.

Because there is so much more you can do with the cash. He's not that far ahead on points, with the like of Ba and Tevez close behind. Many highly ranked sides don't have him. In saying all that I brought him in for the first time this week as I believe either RVP or Rooney are important considering Man U fixtures.

Cuellar yeah, got him. Gorkss, I take it you've got him for the attacking points because the CS look doomed. Even then hard to count on him for that. McAnuff is a decent call and I was eyeing him before the DGW news, he's the only one I'd really consider adding right now.

Fletcher has shown it doesn't matter how good you are if the team isn't.

B - sell Wilson for Nelsen for -4 and next GW use that 0.5 to do Federici to Begovic
C - do nothing and do Wilson to Cameron next week for free

That's a very significant factor unfortunately for Rooney owners imo...I think RVP is always going to be the spearhead of the attack in away games.

            Is it?

Keep in mind that every United away game coincides with a City home game so if you want to rotate captaincy based on that then Rooney seems to me a good option.

RVP on the road takes away your City home captaincy options, and leaves you with possibly weak scores (relative to Rooney) for his home games.

I don't think it's as simple as RVP >>>> Rooney even if he will score more points overall.

But if we're talking about consistency of points...aka goals then I think Rooney's deeper role hinders his chances long term. Rooney seems to perform so many more duties than RVP in any given game...whether it's tracking back, dropping back to receive balls or generally dictating play from a deeper position. RVP won't be performing the same kind of duties in my opinion, rather he'll be used as the focal point of the attack in most games...

I'm not saying this is set in stone but Rooney's deeper role is hugely significant to his FPL potential. It could be a massive hinderance. And the Chelsea game showed us why RVP looks to be the main man in away games.

I'd also add...Rooney's two goals against Stoke came from RVP crosses. For the first RVP drifted into a wide position allowing Rooney to go central and drifted in a perfect cross. The second goal was from an RVP corner...alllowing Rooney once again to go central and tap the resulting cross home. I'm not saying this is the only time Rooney will ever be in those crucial positions but you can't deny that Rooney has more faculties to his all round game and thus is used in many different ways to suit the team tactically. RVP however isn't susceptible to these kind of tactical alterations...for the most part he will be up front and will be the target man as usual.

I don't have anything against having Rooney...I think he will do well regardless...but I would not sell RVP for Rooney as I don't think it's a like for like replacement.

But that's exactly the thing, his "deeper role" is *not* hindering his chances in home games - and he's outperforming RVP in all areas of goal threat there.

In 174min this season Rooney has had 10 goal attempts, 4 on target (~17.4min/shot) where RVP has played 310min (!) and only had 6 goal attempts, 2 on target (~51.7min/shot).

I still don't think there's a question of who scores more overall (RVP, he outperforms Rooney massively away from home) but neither of these players are going to represent 'value' in the traditional sense. You're paying for an elite forward option that you can captain.

Then when you get to the away fixtures that RVP performs so well in he's only keeping pace with the likes of Tevez/Aguero at home (which are *always* available with City/Utd rotation) both of whom come in significantly more expensive.

Sorry to beat on about this, but it's a very expensive decision in our squads and deserves more analysis than the usual mid-level swaps.

I wouldn't disregard Rooney as a viable alternative for one second. And if you are banking on the City/Utd captaincy rotation then Rooney aint a bad option...especially if you are looking to free up cash elsewhere. Just to let you know, I am currently without a City striker so this rotation thing hasn't been top of my thoughts lately...although getting Tevez back could be something I'll look at sooner rather than later.

I get what you are saying...the deeper role has not hindered Rooney's attacking threat much over the last few games. In fact he has performed very well.

If the City/Utd rotation captaincy is your planned strategy then perhaps Rooney's stronger attacking threat at home makes him preferable value-wise. Man Utd have a nice run of fixtures coming up and I expect Rooney will do well...also there's the penalty issue that might be crucial.

Yup, tbh I'm probably going to stick it out with RVP as I need a week in/week out person too (Tevez and Aguero may have their own problems hindering that rotation plan) but for someone who was happy to go with Tevez each home game (and already had cash tied up in him) then I don't think they should dismiss Rooney out of hand.

I actually have little against Hazard. He still gets good points it's just Mata is cheaper and is clearly capable of getting similar points. As for Caz....Well he was never that prolific a scorer in La Liga and didn't get a huge number of assists either so if he does have a big GW (possible) I wouldn't expect him to do it all the time.

Looking at Williamson; at 4.3 he's a steal considering his fixtures.

But is he nailed on or is he threatened by S Taylor? When reading some comments he's playing great, but is this enough?

I personally think Taylor will eventually oust him.

Gibbs > Sagna for a 4PT hit, only got 2 defenders playing this week and its a long term move?

People may advise against t but d always take a hit to have 11 playing. Maybe look at switching another player though as cant see much joy for Sagna.
