From The Physio

From the Physio – Gameweek 12

As a string of leading Fantasy assets line up with sick-notes for their International Managers, we cast an observational eye from the physio over Wayne Rooney’s ankle and Theo Walcott’s hip…

Wayne Rooney

First in line and nursing what Alex Ferguson described as an “ankle knock”, comes Wayne Rooney. If we observe Rooney’s movements throughout the second half in the dramatic 3-2 win at Villa Park we witness the versatile forward moving with ease and agility, twisting and turning with pace. These are movements of high intensity that test the full integrity of the ankle joint; they would certainly isolate any injury if present.

The only incident of note involving Rooney occurred in the 76th minute as the United frontman nudges the ball past an Aston Villa defender and, in an attempt to twist and sprint away, gets caught with a late tackle around the front of the mid-shin area. A tackle more akin to a forceful “ankle-tap” where the players own forward momentum, rather than the force of the impact, causes the fall. The tackle and the fall looked innocuous and of a type not readily associated with ankle damage. Rooney did, however, look totally fatigued at this point.

Rooney continued playing for a further five minutes in which time he demonstrated the same movement fluidity shown consistently throughout the half, performing several high intensity manoeuvres without impediment or reaction. Movements around the ankle joints were performed fully and without constraint, indeed, when substituted, Rooney jogged at a mid-pace to the side of the pitch, where he spoke to Sir Alex and, in fairness, appeared to look just a little anxious.

All things considered, I would suggest that Rooney sustained only mild soft tissue damage of a severity that, with treatment, should resolve within a week. This would give him every chance of being fit and firing as United take on Norwich at Carrow Road.

Theo Walcott

We can also be positive with our assessment of Theo Walcott’s hip. Following the clash with Fulham Arsene Wenger offered this initial appraisal:

“Walcott has a Glute muscle problem. We nearly took him off at half-time, he nearly went down, but we left him on. In the end, it got worse. At the moment, he is limping so I do not know whether he will be able to join the national team or not.”

This statement suggests that the Arsenal medics were aware of any problems and deemed them minor enough for Walcott to resume playing with a low risk of further deterioration. This would indicate that the injury wasn’t a major concern and could dissipate with further activity.

An observation of his subsequent physiological movements adds credibility to the half-time judgment. Walcott can be observed moving with the freedom, fluidity and versatility, performing a range of high intensity movements that would offer no cause for concern from the perspective of a physiotherapist.

Walcott did, however, appear to be involved in a collision that the camera didn’t catch. In the aftermath of the incident the camera cuts to him looking forlorn, leaning forward with hands on knees, not touching anywhere specifically, actions that would not indicate significant injury. Indeed, immediately after this incident Walcott can be seen sprinting and turning with the ball to cross high into the penalty-box, movements at the hip joint that would cause a reaction if any problem lingered.

Substituted in the 84th minute the England International can be seen jogging to the side of the pitch, he then slows to a walk, with just the faintest hint of a limp.

In summary, barring no underlying problems, it would be fair to suggest that Walcott is nursing a soft tissue injury of minor severity, that, with treatment, should be resolved within seven days. Chances are high that the Arsenal winger will have his hat to throw in in the ring as Arsenal go toe-to-toe with local rivals Spurs at the Emirates this weekend.

Wondering if anyone has some outside the box type advice for me as im considering upgrading a 3rd defender...?

    team is

    bego / jussi

baines / rafael / ben davies / nelsen / gorkss

valencia / ben arfa / michu / fellaini / sterling

    rvp / tevez / jelavic

    1.7 bank / 1 FT

i know barfa is a stuttering commodity somewhat and michu's fixtures arent great so either could be shipped, plus playing 3 everton since fellaini came back could lead me to ship jelavic, but really im ok with holding all of those players most of which have risen significantly...

really my weakest spot is the 3rd defender (scored on gorkss asst and cs but benched him vs qpr)...

choices im pondering so far are:

bardsley for decent fixtures and double gw...
ridgewell for solid run on fixtures...
huth --is he going to start scoring again?
wisdom --cheap l'pool defender but how long is he nail-ed on for?

or i could just play nelsen/gorkss and next week drop jelavic/tevez for some extra cash and buy g.johnson, which im seriously considering...

any thoughts, is there anyone i should be considering but am not..?

Never mind that-defenders are always low priority. Valencia and HBA need booting first preferably for Bale and Mata.

You have two top tier defenders that you will play every week. Just rotate the other 3 based on the fixture.

My concern wold be your midfield which is discernably lightweight. I would probably downgrade Jelavic and look to upgrade HBA (probably to Mata)

thanks for advice, not really interested in dropping either of those players this week but i appreciate the effort(s)...

barfa seems a solid shout and i just bought valencia for the upcoming run of fixtures, and jelavic will be shipped as needed but for now he is a solid points threat at great value...

i cant stop thinking about ridgewell.....

    Ah, cut off 🙂

    P.S. I have £2.2m in the bank...

Am I mad for benching Fellaini this weekend? I just can't find a place for him. I'm looking to sell him as soon as possible but hopefully I'll get one more game (Norwich) out of him before I do - a booking against Reading, however, vetoes that.

I haven't yet made a transfer this week - I need to wait and see if Szczesny is back first.

I think Liverpool will trounce Wigan at Anfield and Sterling is getting time up front as well. I have a feeling Rooney could be rested anyway - injury concerns coupled with weak opposition (Norwich) and Hernandez pushing for a start, means it's the ideal match for him to sit out.

        But I dunno...

Last time I checked Wigan haven't been getting trounced. In fact the one time they did was at Old Trafford and that's to be expected. Even Stoke got obliterated and they've been keeping games low-scoring all year elsewhere.

Liverpool are not Man Utd. Unless there's a red card or they catch them on a bad day...I'd expect a tight match.

Rooney will at least equal van Persie's point tally from now until the end of the season. And besides - we all know van Persie's health record. Keep Rooney. RvP is overhyped. ... Even if he's doing well (which he is), the amount he costs detracts so much from the rest of your team, he's just not worth it. For him, even a goal a week is only making par for his price.

I would maintain that Ba is a cheaper Suarez and lacks an impending Suspension. Ba is the dominant striker getting the most chances in his team as is Suarez. The difference is Ba is cheaper and has equally good fixtures and is only 'off-form' because of an injury. He's also prone to scoring big in games so I would be pretty cautious selling Ba right now.

Michu - poor fixtures, one booking away from a suspension

K.Nolan - HORRIFICALLY poor fixtures, one booking away from a suspension

Fellaini - poor fixtures, one booking away from a suspension

Sold Michu three weeks ago and he's done nothing since. I'll be seeling Fellaini after the Norwich match (if he doesn't get booked against Reading!). It's time to flog these "in the hole" midfielders!

Basically I think that because Rooney was injured Fergie banned RVP from moving from his house this week. Welbeck was in action too last night so he could have winded up with Hernandez as his only fit striker potentially and you know how Fergie likes to fake player injuries.

I have no idea what Rukawa's monkey banana is..? 😐

I'm still debating it in my head. I don't feel this game coming up is the ideal time to sell as I see goals in the NL Derby. I also don't want to be disappointed by buying Silva and not getting instant returns off it. Especially as I think Cazorla has more goals to his game. And he's already scored half of Silva's total goals for last season.

That's the obvious transfer...there is also Walcott which I'm considering but not sure if I'd do it right now as it seems too sideways. Especially as Walcott is always there to downgrade to if needed. I also have a feeling Giroud might be the best Arsenal cover ultimately and he's cheaper than the lot. But then I don't want to lose Ba in a hurry and he's who would have to make way.

The only reason I'd sell Santi is the impending price fall...I'd be a bit annoyed if I lost value and then lost patience after a 2 pointer...if you know what I mean?

I've done a lot of thinking about it and I still don't know what the solution is. I've tried to look ahead and imagine my feelings about each move.

              Santi > Silva (2 pointer) B*LLOCKS, ASSIST A BLOODY GOAL YOU ASSH*LE
Santi > Walcott (2 pointer off after 60 mins) WALCOTT YOU PIECE OF SH*T, WHAT ARE YOU EVEN GOOD FOR???
Keep Santi for 2 points...ARRGH I GUESS I HAVE TO SELL YOU. BUT THANKS FOR THE GOALS AND THE MEMORIES

The last one seems the most bearable. I'd curse myself if Santi got an assist or a goal in it really is what I'm saying. As I think then he'd have kept up a pretty good rate of attacking returns since I've owned him.

I bought Lambchops after this 10+ haul vs Villa and thought he would be the bargain of the season. He might still be. He did sweet blow all after that while I owned him for 5 or so weeks. Yes, South have the fixtures and he is on peno's, but face it they are shit. They have conceded the most goals in ALL the English footy leagues I believe!

I bought in Berba on Sat eve as I wanted him anyway from gw 15 on.

You have money in the bank so maybe Lamb to Suarez/kun? Just check Tootprick's susp and Citeh's CL exit.

Don't do it this week, just roll your FT.

I bought Berba last week with Arsenal away...that worked out splendidly...

He's on pens, and is leading the line in the second highest scoring team in the prem. And they were high-scoring before he even joined so it's no fluke. Their best defence is attack really. And Berbatov is a class above.

Those fixtures aren't as hard as they appear.

3 home games and 2 London derbies (all the london derbies have had goals in them this year)

Sun, tot & new @ home are great. Che away is comparable to arsenal away. That leaves stoke away which is hard on paper but i would atill never bench him for that one. Cliche fixture proof

    Mignolet (Federici)
    Cameron Saylor Demel (Gorkks Clyne)
    Bale Cazorla Pienaar Mata (Sterling)
    Rvp(c) Tevez Ba

    0.3 in bank 1 FT

Thinkin of goin against my better judgement and doin Tevez to Berbatov as long term it will pay off(though this week tevez may make me cry) and gives me some much needed cash to upgrade Demel/Clyne next week.. OR do i save my transfer and re-assess next week?

Save FT and re assess. A lot happens in a week and how much can Berba really outscore tevez by this gw? If Tevez gets benched you have Sterling anyway.

I may do something similar. The old Citeh/United captaincy rotation could be lethal. When Aguero is on form he's unstoppable.

Flying under the radar (except the radar of the astute) I'd say its the perfect time to buy him. Or at least after this weekend.

Looking to lose him this week, if only temporarily. Worried he won't start this w/e, then he has Chelsea away.

A question for the DeadZone. How would you rank the following strikers in order of FPL desirability right now?

    Aguero
    Ba
    Berb
    Giroud
    Jelly
    Suarez

    Curious on opinions....

Thanks - I'll tell you the reason. I'm thinking of ditching Kun, as he may not play this w/e after 90 for Argentina and the CL next week. He then has Chelsea away. I was trying to work out who (if anyone) to get in for him.

My top options were Berb and Suarez, but thought of the others too. Still undecided, basically.

But losing Aguero would allow me to fund Pienaar -> Fellaini.

What bandwagons are waiting to happen? Basically anyone who may score this weekend prompting immediate pandemonium.

I think a goal from Aguero or Silva would see everyone looking to get one of them in.

    Is there anyone else?
