The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Saturday – Part Two

Anthony Pilkington earns the points for Norwich with a superb headed effort extending his side’s unbeaten run to five. Robin Van Persie fails to score or assist for the first time as a starter for United, with the Canaries resilient defence proving too good for the most prolific attack in the Premier League:

Going Up

Norwich Defence
The Canaries came into this evening’s game having conceded a single goal in their previous four Gameweeks but the visit of United was considered a real test of their resolve. A 1-0 win continued their upturn in resilience as Chris Hughton’s influence starts to have a real effect – they now have five clean sheets this term, three more than this evening’s beaten opponents.

Anthony Pilkington
His first goal of the campaign was enough to produce the points for the hosts. Norwich have not tasted defeat since a 4-1 battering at Chelsea in Gameweek 7 and while they may not score many – netting more than once on a single occasion so far – Hughton’s side concede even less; the opposite of last season’s form under former boss Paul Lambert.

Going Down

United Defence
David De Gea was given the day off after a trip to the dentist caused problems but Anders Lindegaard could do little about Pilkington’s excellent headed winner. United have now conceded first in eight of their 12 matches and for once, their attack was unable to bail them out.

United Attack
Tonsillitis kept Wayne Rooney out of the reckoning and with Javier Hernandez selected to start, Robin Van Persie dropped a little deeper. Having racked up 29 goals in the previous 10, with at least two goals per game over that run, the visitors were snuffed out for the first time since Gameweek 1. Three favourable fixtures in the next four look set to offer Van Persie a chance to rectify tonight’s blip – this was the first time he has failed to produce a goal or assist when starting a league game for United.

    Currently have:
    Begovic (Rudd)
    Gorks Nelsen Rafael Clyne Cuellar
    Bale Caz Haz Fell Sterling
    Ba RVP Berba

Have 2FT with 0 in the bank.
Thinking of doing Haz > Silva for the coming week before Haz's price falls even further and before Silva's price rises. Any other suggestions for the team?
I got Haz for 9.8. When I try to sell him though, I only get 9.8 in return? Shouldn't I be receiving the average of what I got him for and what he is valued at now?

Don't. Take a look at Utd's upcoming fixtures. They have already qualified in Europe and SAF will keep playing RVP in the EPL. He is their go to man and a week's blank is not worth transferring him out.

It's too late to give up.

Played my first season last year cos a friend asked me to, but didn't really give a toss until January, when I caught the FF bug, by which time I was in the toilet. Spent the rest of the season in distant last, frantically trying to catch up.

t problem is that I don't have t edge and right feeling this year. I am selling Mata when he got 18pt haul. I am selling RVP right before he goes on a run. I am captaining him 3 times this year for 1pt, 2pt, 5pt. I am captaining Rooney and he gots injured for 1pt. Having kun when he got injured, selling him for a hit, after I am fed up and Mancini starts him after that Panam game, selling bale before he goes on a run, keeping Santi for several blanls, too many injuries, had a GW with 0 goals and assists and CS in one GW, worst in 5 years when snow isn't included.

Too much going wrong. Still isn't time to give up? MY decisions is what scares me, not the pt gap

My advice. always go with your gut. Go with always players with both good fixture and form. Stats are there only to help back up your views. what happens this week will not necessarily happen the next. you need to watch games regularly. particularly the players which your are interested to buy and those that are in your team. you need to at least see the highlights of the opponents, your players may face against to have better judgements and calls!

They got the kind of breaks that good teams get though. The return of Silva is immense for that team. He runs the show, their offence is better and thus improves their defense. They were a bit lucky but it's time to be very ready to jump on I think

Agreed. Lots of bleak outlooks. An unfortunate consequence of an attacking elite that shows no signs of slowing down. I posted on the last page that if Baines, Mata, and RVP all blank in the same week, the pain is exaggerated but should not be considered fatal.

I have Baines and RVP. I'll do well enough to swim in place I think. Knew this week could be very topsy turvy and it was in that quite a few big hitters nailed it while RVP floundered. I don't mind having someone like Baines to sell at all right now

Fair enough, but Baines seems like a steep price to pay when you have Michu and Sterling as well.

I bought Sterling cheaply so not much profit to be made there once I replace him. Michu returns good points for his price so will keep him for another while. Baines is simply putting my money on attacking returns for a forward rather than a defender who had return few points in the last six weeks. Instead of Baines at the back I'll have a defender with a better chance of a clean sheet and hopefully one who gets forward.

Michu, Lambert and Sterling are your last three attackers, but would Baines money guarantee you two guys with better returns week in and week out? Mind you, I shipped Lambert last week, but that was because he was my 2nd striker. I am stuck with Pog as my last attacker so that's why I'm interested in your Baines logic. I don't have the money to upgrade but you might be able to.

At least Pog has a half decent fixture next week or you could go 4 at the back. Midfield choices are tough right now and that's why I'm taking a wait and see attitude over the next couple of weeks. You're in the same boat - just have to keep a close eye on players and prices.

Oh ok, I guess it isn't too bad. Gutted I did not stick with my ut n captain tevez but listened to a lot of people on here re rvp. And unfortunatly Demi can not be 100% trusted anymore for early line ups. In an alternate game I had Enrique captain but aw he wasn't even playing accordingly and lost the points. It is not the first time this season either. It is still nice to have an inkling I guess but now has to be taken with a definate pinch of salt

Despite my annoyance that everyone are beating my score this week, it has been a good one for the game itself I think. During the first half of last season pretty much everyone had Silva, RVP, Vorm, Aguero and a couple of other big hitters I can't remember.

Now - however - there are so many greats to chose from. Suarez, Ba, RVP, Tevez, Berba, Defoe, Aguero, Rooney and Giroud are all great expensive picks. Midfield is even more varied because of the huge amount of semi-OOP budget players like Michu, Morrison, Nolan and Sterling, and the fact that teams like Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs have a lot of viable options depending on how much you want to pay. Defensive strength has become complicated by the bigger teams not really delivering and a lot of budget options keep delivering assists and goals, and there are many many viable keeper rotations. I know there is a template floating around, but that is not the only way to build your team.

In essence, I'm not going to freak out and knee-jerk in Silva and Aguero because next week I might be the one that has all the right players.

Well summed up at the end there. At the end of the day half the template players did well and the other half didn't. How many you had on either side determines how good your game week went. Swings and roundabouts.

Yeah, I honestly think this GW would not have been so bad if it wasn't for that result. It just makes me a little sick to see Silva - 14 points. I love the guy and want him in my team really badly. But I just don't know which avenue to go to get him in. It just feels impossible. I can't believe Mata was benched too. That was just agony.

If I were to downgrade Baines and another defender I could have this front 8

      Mata, Silva, Bale, Walcott, Sterling
      RVP, Suarez, Berbatov

Baines wouldn't have much appeal in the face of that team.

        bale mata caz silva maloney
rvp berb giroud(maybe change him to ba).
        its very tempting
so i suppose the question is would you have that midfield or would you have three of them and baines with one of michu/fellon/nolan?

I'm strongly considering ditching Baines. While it's fun to own him. What's the point when Everton's defence is atrociously bad at keeping CS. And if it gives you extra coverage of other teams I'm starting to feel a bit peeved by his expensive presence.

Bad move. Players should be judged long term, not by weekly performance. Baines will be right up there as the top scoring defender regardless of CS because of his assist and goal threat.

But the top points scorers in FPL wont all necessarily have Baines over the season. Yes he probably will be up there. But is he worth having if you can get more points from certain midfielders/strikers you would prefer?

Well I'd say nothing is certain, so its not as if you're transferring him out knowing you'll definitely be better off. Personally I always feel safer having Baines in my team. Sometimes on fantasy football there are too many transfers, too much over thinking and over planning. Look at the guy who scored the most this week with 102 points. He's made 2 transfers. Now I know a lot of that is down to luck, but I like having certain players in my team who I will stick with even if they miss a couple of clean sheets because I know they will still pay off long term rather than gambling by spreading the extra cash about elsewhere. Its a personal choice!

Man Utd's midfield this year is woefully bad at times. People have said Fergie might have had regrets signing Kagawa...but in my opinion that midfield needs some creativity and FAST. They are not going to win the league with Giggs, Carrick, Scholes plodding along slowly up the pitch and creating nothing. There is such a naivety about how they approach games. It's like they've forgotten how to even play football half the time.

United really missed Rooney yesterday, he is the guy that really brings the attack forward. Giggs starting was a mistake and I'm still not convinced he's good enough to play CM. Scholes or Cleverly should have started instead.

It's like you said I think, they were plodding, Scholes in particular. They have no pace, no spark and just shows how essential Rooney is to that team. Kagawa will help but they need another to step up.
