The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Saturday – Part Two

Anthony Pilkington earns the points for Norwich with a superb headed effort extending his side’s unbeaten run to five. Robin Van Persie fails to score or assist for the first time as a starter for United, with the Canaries resilient defence proving too good for the most prolific attack in the Premier League:

Going Up

Norwich Defence
The Canaries came into this evening’s game having conceded a single goal in their previous four Gameweeks but the visit of United was considered a real test of their resolve. A 1-0 win continued their upturn in resilience as Chris Hughton’s influence starts to have a real effect – they now have five clean sheets this term, three more than this evening’s beaten opponents.

Anthony Pilkington
His first goal of the campaign was enough to produce the points for the hosts. Norwich have not tasted defeat since a 4-1 battering at Chelsea in Gameweek 7 and while they may not score many – netting more than once on a single occasion so far – Hughton’s side concede even less; the opposite of last season’s form under former boss Paul Lambert.

Going Down

United Defence
David De Gea was given the day off after a trip to the dentist caused problems but Anders Lindegaard could do little about Pilkington’s excellent headed winner. United have now conceded first in eight of their 12 matches and for once, their attack was unable to bail them out.

United Attack
Tonsillitis kept Wayne Rooney out of the reckoning and with Javier Hernandez selected to start, Robin Van Persie dropped a little deeper. Having racked up 29 goals in the previous 10, with at least two goals per game over that run, the visitors were snuffed out for the first time since Gameweek 1. Three favourable fixtures in the next four look set to offer Van Persie a chance to rectify tonight’s blip – this was the first time he has failed to produce a goal or assist when starting a league game for United.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    begovic (mannone)
    baines rafael culler (demel davies)
    sterling nasri cazorla michu (fellaini)
    rvp ba berba

    have 0.7m in the bank.

wanna get rid of nasri so will have 8.8m to spend bt cant think of a big hitter in that range. so shd i jus keep nasri and will get city cover thru him.

or shd i take a hit to do ba + nasri >> tevez + any mid up to 7.6 for a hit
    Or ba >>> giroud
    Or ba + Nasri >>> Suarez + Morrison/Lallana/walters for a hit.

Taking out ba when they play shampton feels wrong though bt taking out Nasri alone doesn't work since I can't get a big hitter in mid for 8.8

    Thoughts??

Which one is better? I can’t decide!

    A) Rooney & Kacaniklic

    B) Cazorla/Bale & Ruiz/Long (or any other forward under 6.9m)

        Beg (Jussi)
        Baines Mertesacker Rafael (Cuellar, Cameron)
        Mata Fellaini Hernandez Silva Cazorla
        Suarez Ba (Ruiz/Long)

Long and Odenwingie are both an intersting option.

I did actually. It was between the two of them. The reason why I went for Hernandez was because he is the most in form player for his price range, an incredible differential (approx 1% ownership) to the others that have Michu etc and great stats, which is what I was looking for. He got an assist against Newcastle earlier and I'm sure there'll be more to see from him!

hmm, i don't you should not pick a player because you'll think they'll get injured, it's just bad luck

and he definitely shouldn't be a rotation risk with the last 3 games he's played! i think it's a punt that could pay off 🙂 i may be getting walcott in myself i think

I think Wenger also likes using Walcott midweek for the CL fixtures usually which could be a problem, thats my issue. I do like a differential though! I can literally just afford it too, Berb & Walcott with 0.0 left in the bank! Team would be:

            Beg (Jussi)
            Baines Mertesacker Rafael (Cuellar, Cameron)
            Mata Fellaini Hernandez Silva Walcott

long term, having a cheap 3rd striker is going to cost you. You gotta get more money up top. Hernandez can be puncheon or Kac, Mertesacker can be Gorkks/Clyne/Demel, and then Ruiz needs to be Berb or Giroud.

I have to disagree Don. For a while I thought the same, but if you look at the points scored across the board, the most cumulative points come from midfield. I actually think having a 3-5-2 strategy would work. You could spend big on two consistent strikers who earn big points who you could captain, and then a cheaper 3rd striker like Ruiz (who is actually still pretty damn good and a differential!) would allow a top scoring midfield. In my case, it could be -Mata Fellaini Hernandez Silva Cazorla-. Hernandez played incredibly well against Newcastle and is a massive differential compared to the 40, 45% who already have Van Persie and Tevez.

Having a 3-4-3 is the most common, and your strategy will work well for an above average score, but I think 3-5-2 with a couple of differentials will really rake in the points long term.

I hadn't considered a formation change for a while, but its an interesting argument (if I'd benched RVP for Puncheon this week I'd be 8+ points better off). I wish FPL maintained archives of past years, because I remember noticing and arguing over the summer (when last year's stats/points were still accessible on the site) that the strikers out-competed comparable midfielders overall. The top 8 strikers scored more than all but the top 3 midfielders, or some stat like that. The bonus system favoring goals so much gives strikers an advantage, which is why I think its important to have money up top. With so many teams playing with an "in the hole" MF though, that strategy could be shifting.

Exactly, thats what I mean. Most of the time I would agree, but there are several midfielders this season who are now playing virtually as strikers (Michu, Fellaini, Nolan to name a few) which makes it much more worthwhile to have 5 playing from mid with two up front. Its always going to be a gamble of course, but without risk there's no reward right! 😉

33 points, four point hit from transfers, and probably some bonus points to come. It doesn't look great, but I have Begovic, McCartney, Nolan and Berbatov (C) to play. Think that I could still get an above average score this week?

So I have 2 frees but with fella out and baines easy fixture I think my best move is to get rid of davies for Cuellar in preparation for double as my only transfer this week. Then next week I can get in Enrique for baines and fella for peanut.

I just can not see what else I can do at this stage. Mata or hazard? Walcott or carzola? I don't think either is worth a transfer. Thoughts?

A: shd i take a hit to do ba + nasri >> tevez + any mid up to 7.6 for a hit
    B ba >>> giroud
    C ba + Nasri >>> Suarez + Morrison/Lallana/walters for a hit.

Taking out ba when they play shampton feels wrong though bt taking out Nasri alone doesn’t work since I can’t get a big hitter in mid for 8.8 so need to take nasri out along with someone else...

    Thoughts??

      😀

I watched the game. He was unlucky not to have a few goals. Great that he got one in the end.

The most frustrating part about FPL right now is that Ba/Berbatov are doing well but these heavy hitters keep smashing them in too. It's impossible to say what is the best long term solution. It's driving my mad! I mean people are going to sell Ba this week now despite him scoring. It's outrageous! 😀

Dont mind the yellow as long term move. I sctually think tevez is pretty nailed on and that ba will underperform as newc formmhas dipped, they miss cabayemand hba off boil. It would suck to lose santi but given prices i could reverse the trades easily too. Doing ba and santi out gives the best strikeforce in the game, whilst maintiang balance in defe and midfield

I'm starting to believe that the hardcore FPL players don't so much enjoy the results of the game itself as everything around it.

Today was incredibly frustrating and if I didn't love football so much I'd probably give up playing FPL. The stress levels go through the roof sometimes. Today was particularly horrific for the senses.

But now I'm back to looking at stats and judging things objectively and taking it all in, I actually feel much more at ease about how things have gone. It's the madness of the gameweeks that can be heaven or hell. There's nothing better in FPL than a fresh slate, a new GW, a new batch of stats to observe. As for the experience of a low-scoring week...well I think we would all prefer not to have this much interest in it when that happens!

In saying that though he is back to his inaccurate ways perhaps. 7 shots with only 2 on target. Its perhaps lucky that the two on target both resulted in goals. Non Suarez owners will be hoping his wayward shooting will come back to bite.

The problem is Suarez simply can't be on my watchlist right now. If you go RVP you've got to stick with him for this run of fixtures. He'd be only one I could swap straight for Suarez and that just isn't a wise move.

you cannot take into consideration any arsenal players performance against spurs today. it is not a true reflection of a gameweek, a statistical anomaly. playing against a 10 man spurs outfit with the amount of injuries and totally utter horrific defense (spurs fan here, honestly).

Walcott looked great, everyone else capitalized. Like hyenas on a carcass

baines out this week for gorkss to raise money to bring silva in for ramirez (the southampton one)
even if he scores or smthn next week his fixtures after that are not the most tempting so it is a bit of a long term transfer
also silva will definitly rise in price and i wnt be able to buy him

sounds like a good move to me, possibly a week too early but you would lose out on price rises i guess
