The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Sunday

Brede Hangeland’s dismissal hands Sunderland the chance to register their first away win of the season. Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson both play a part in two of the Black Cats’ three goals, while Dimitar Berbatov draws a rare blank as Fulham lose for the first time with the Bulgarian in their starting XI:

On the Up

Steven Fletcher
Without a strike since Gameweek 5, the Scot returned to form with a goal and assist as Sunderland made full use of their extra-man advantage following Brede Hangeland’s first-half dismissal. With four home fixtures in the next four, including double Gameweek 16, Fletcher chose the perfect time to serve a reminder of his capabilities.

Adam Johnson
The winger added to last week’s goal at Everton by providing a pair of assists as the Black Cats scored more than a single goal for only the second time this season. Johnson had previously failed to produce any attacking returns prior to Gameweek 11 but is starting to suggest he may be finally settling at the Stadium of Light.

Carlos Cuellar
Providing he’s injury-free, the Spaniard seems nailed-on at the heart of the Sunderland defence and found the net for the first time since moving to Wearside. His cut-price valuation means Cuellar is another likely candidate for his side’s upcoming fixtures, bearing in mind O’Neill’s side have conceded just three goals in four home games so far.

Stephane Sessegnon
For many a month he’s flattered to deceive but the Benin international fired home a superb effort to score for the first time since March. If Sessegnon can return to the form that produced seven goals and 12 assists last term, he could be another differential to consider over the next few.

Going Down

Brede Hangeland
Dismissed for a two-footed challenge on Lee Cattermole, the Cottagers centre-half now faces a three-match ban. Hangeland’s absence should afford Philippe Senderos a chance alongside Aaron Hughes ahead of trips to Stoke and Chelsea and a home clash against Spurs.

James McClean
A nailed-on starter under Martin O’Neill last term, the winger was omitted from the starting line-up for today’s showdown. The return of Lee Cattermole saw Seb Larsson move to the right and Adam Johnson shift over to the left as McClean dropped out for the second time in three Gameweeks.

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian was snapped up by over 230,000 FPL managers heading into today’s game after producing returns in five of his first six starts for the Cottagers. With injuries and dismissals disrupting the hosts’ rhythm, Berbatov returned a rare blank but was nevertheless full of creativity and attacking threat for Jol’s side.

Fulham Defence
There’s no denying Hangeland’s sending off played a part in today’s result but Jol’s defence continue to leak goals at an alarming rate. Fulham have now conceded three goals in all but one of their last four matches and have shipped 22 this term – only QPR and Southampton have conceded more.

** Just a heads-up to let you know that the Big Numbers article, which usually follows Sunday evening’s Stock Check, should now be published tomorrow. Mark has been laid low by a bug and is having a rare night off.

What is to be done with Chicarito? I got him thinking he will get solid game time during United's easy run. But now it looks like he will revert to sub role. Should I hold on in the hope he will score as a sub or ship him out? I can possibly get Rooney as united cover.

Just a very basic analysis of how much to spend on each position based on how many points each position is getting.

Average score of top 3 in each position:

    GK: 55, 51, 47 = 51
    DEF. 58, 57, 47 = 54
    MID: 76, 72, 69 = 72
    FWD: 87, 80, 79 = 82

After a bit of maths that implies you should spend the following % of your starting 11 budget on each position:
    6.7% 7.1% 9.4% 11.4%

How do we get your starting 11 budget? Let's assume you have. 4.5 4.5 5.0 5.0 = 19 spent on bench and 81+ spent on team.

Then the average price you should pay for each position in your team is:
    5.4 5.7 7.6 9.2

    Which is pretty much
    Jaaskelainen/Schwarzer/Mignolet
    Riise/Clichy/McAuley
    Michu/Fellaini
    Tevez/Suarez (start of season)/Jelavic/Giroud/Ba

Make of it what you will. Enjoy!

First you'll need to explain exactly how you think you proved the doubters wrong.

If you meant you proved you could actually win a game by any means whatsoever, yes, an extremely small number of people were proved wrong.

If you mean prove you can outplay teams, I'm afraid a lot of people are feeling rather smug.

    Hi guys,
Just had a pretty mixed week re FF. If only I'd captained Tevez - ah the cruelty of hindsight.
Wondering what I should do with my team now, I've got 2FT and £0.1 in the bank.
I'm happy with the majority of my team but it definitely needs a few tweaks here and there.
My transfers have brought mixed results in the past, kneejerking too quickly and then chasing points.
I feel I need to change Routledge, change the defenders, and possibly downgrade Baines to free up funds and strengthen elsewhere. I want to keep Fellaini and don't mind benching him for a week but am willing to transfer him out.
Thinking of swapping Hughes for Cuellar, but not sure about other transfers.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Team should be linked.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at those players, Puncheon interests me as I'll be able to cash in on Routledge and invest elsewhere. Maloney could be a good punt, too. Cuellar has the fixtures so should be a good move.

Isacki, I never said we could outplay teams. Not with Cattermole in your team. Folks need to give it a break though, just because they refuse to own Sunderland players in their FPL teams doesn't mean we're suddenly the worst team in the world. Every goal we scored today was world class!

When Sunderland are banging them in left right and centre and Fletcher/Sess/AJ are successful bandwagons instead of failed bandwagons then we'll be able to say Sunderland are a good team.

They were good at points last year when Sess became a beast and the passing was more fluid. Though they still had a counterattacking gameplan naturally.

We'd be lying if we said they were good now.

Don't feel it's unfair. West Ham and Stoke fans will perhaps never hear their teams described as beautiful but they don't care because it works.

Heck, Chelsea have taken so much abuse for winning the champions league by parking the bus.

That's where you're contradicting yourself. You say we are just lucky that others are worse. But you have false ambitions for us.

That's the difference really. You think we are vastly underperforming but then describe us as lucky. I think we are performing badly but it's about the same every year! Not since we came 7th twice have I ever thought we were good enough to take it to the next level. But I'm just happy we are in the prem, the years in the championship were painful. Especially as I had to watch all those terrible highlight shows! 😀

You're really confusing me, first you're saying Sunderland is not sh*t and then you're saying they deserve credit for battling relegation.

End of the day just roll with what people think of your team because it's not literally you, and it doesn't matter, and everyone gets it.

Well it's clear we are not going to be high flying this year so might as well admit we're in a dogfight with the rest. I'm also always cautious to ever be optimistic, such is the heartache of being relegated so many times 🙁

But anyway, I don't really think the abuse you get as an Arsenal fan is the same. My bro is an Arsenal fan and I'd swap our fortunes any day! When people say Arsenal are sh*t they mean they are not winning trophies/leagues. Just think it's a bit pointless saying Sunderland are sh*t when we are doing about as good as you'd expect us to.

Also my other two bros are Newcastle fans so I'm sick of the abuse 😀

Steve Bruce was sacked because he didn't do enough with the money. Despite being a good manager MON hasn't exactly made them click this year. It's because of your spending not matching results that you get abuse, like Liverpool fans, Leeds fans, etc.

If you start scoring goals more freely and get settled near Europa spots you will be playing to your potential. Not proving anyone wrong, unless they genuinely think you're gonna be relegated.

Obviously Fletcher will get some goals because he is the target man. But he's not #1 on my list of replacements by any means.

Yeah suppose but I still am happy enough at where we are now. People talk about us taking it to the next level. But I actually think just staying up consistently in mid table is where we are at. Maybe I'm just content we are not getting relegated/promoted year in year out. It was too much of a rolllercoaster ride.

I hated Steve Bruce by the end too. Was always making excuses. At least you know MON is a top manager. Even if he isn't going to play a stylish brand of football.

I don't really care how boring we play...we've still got some great attackers in AJ/Sess/Fletch. Probably the best team we've ever had. It just takes time to get things going. Best manager we've ever had too. Need to appreciate it.

    Begovic (mannone)
    rafael baines cueller (davies demel)
    michu cazorla sterling nasri (fellaini)
    rvp berba Ba

Have 1FT and 0.7m in the bank….Not sure what to do.
A: ba >> giroud…and then sell cazorla the following week
    B:. ba + cazorla >> giroud + silva…. for a hit
    C: ba + nasri >> suarez + any mid upto 6.8 i.e. morrison…for a hit
    D: ba + nasri >> tevez + any mid upto 7.5 i.e. lennon/johnson…for a hit

I want to bring in suarez and tevez but taking out Ba doesnt make sense since they playing southampton. suarez is on 4 yellows and tevez is playing chelsea.

If i had the cash, i would have just done nasri >> silva but in order to do that now, i have to take a hit…

    thoughts??

NEXT WEEK - 2FT - Stirling for Nolan and Fellaini for Pienaar. I have a feeling Afro Man will come back better (and cheaper) after a break. This would make my attack look like the following:

Silva - Mata - Ben Arfa - Fellaini - Sterling
    Berbatov - RVP - Ba

    and also free up 0.5

    Thanks.

    Morning,

Last two weeks pretty much ended my season and I only one I can blame is myself (of course).
I did berba => ba gw11 altough I wasn't happy for that tranny.
Then tried to admit my mistake and did tevez => berba gw12, altough I knew it had massive potential to backfire, long term transfer blaah blaah blaah.

I went from 70k to 320k in two weeks and I'm 100 points behind my ml leader + there's 20 teams between us.

    Would you give me your toughts on these please..;

    1. pointless to use wild card now and get suarez in because all my rivals already have him - stick with rvp, ba, berba. If things don't change in couple of weeks, forget season rank and start focusing on monthly competitions (no need to worry hits and money prices also there - not happy to sacrifice season rank tough).

    2. wild card now, point gab can't get any bigger!
Something like: baines, williams, hughes, mata, pienaar, guthrie, ba =>
rafael, sagna, gorkks, a.johnson, sterling, walcott, suarez

    2. has couple of players for big backfire potential (baines, mata even pienaar), but then again if it goes tits up again, I can still start playing those monthly competitions...of course wc would come handy in there too.

Looong loooong post, but at least couple of opinnions would be nice.
I was all set to keep going what I have, but while writing this, I'm leaning towards to wild card..

    thanks

But even if I downgrade rafael, I would be tempted to upgrade berba for giroud, more than a.johnson to mata tbh.

Currently I have also fellaini in my wc draft, maybe get rid of him then instead..

100 points is very achievable for one team, but since there's 20 teams between me and leader, it's getting damn difficult.
And have to say I'm starting to think how nice it would be to make your team for only 4-5 gw's and stop worrying this shitty season 🙂

How about taking hits to fix your team? Like 12pts for a short term pain. Save wildcard for dgw imo. A lot of us scored 100-150 during the big dgw last season, and even some people score 100+ pts in gw1 where che and rea had dgw.

tought that, but I can't really make that gap even bigger anymore, if I don't start getting points now I'm free to play monthly competitions and then I can re-make my team for every month without worrying hits.

On the other hand I could take that 12 pointer and look how it turns out and save my wc for those monthly competitions too...

I agree, I think Mignolet is one of the best keepers around. It's amazing that we had him before we signed Craig Gordon for a whopping 9m (Thanks Keano)

He's the reason I'm so confident about our defence too.

Think about what you just said. A week after SOUTHAMPTON! Fletcher was a 'must not have' just 24 hours ago, a goal/assist vs a 10 man Fulham shouldn't change that. They have West Brom who are on fire at the moment, Norwich away who are very good defensively now and a DGW which includes Chelsea. Ba scored a hat-trick away to Stoke last season, I know that doesn't mean much but still, and then he has Wigan (H) to follow. Fellaini is suspended for a week and then is up against Arsenal and Spurs in the next 3. Despite them being 'top teams' they will struggle in containing Fellaini and Arsenal/Spurs haven't been any good defensively lately, Spurs all season. He offers far more goal threat than Silva and is 2 million cheaper. He is arguably the best value mid at the price and he is one of the highest scoring.

          Good luck.

Always wanted Fletcher, never had him till now. A sole point striker for a team coming into form with high bonus potential, is a good prospect. Agree with the fixtures, but NewC really are crap right now, and if it wasnt for the Ba last min goal last week, he would be another GW casualty.

Stoke he mightve scored last time, but along with wigan two fixtures I wouldnt really bank on. Southampton yes, every chance hell get good points.

Fellaini, time to leave mate. Im not a kneejerker and hardly take hits, but with Ars and Tot in the next 3, there is stoke away and whm away as the other fixtures. Thise a 4 tough matches, vs the class of silva.

I know you have both in your team, and you make a good argument, but I still think this will do better.

Cheers for the insights! Hope to see you in 3 weeks and goad a bit;)

He's not really a defender though. See him as a 6th mid who gets 4 points for cleanies instead of one and an extra point when he scores, if you will. Significantly more chances created than ANY midfielder.

Also, do you really think your targeted big hitter will outscore Nolan/Fellaini?

I'd rather own a solid set of cheaper differentials if I could to be honest. If it meant I could afford that extra Silva/Aguero...it'll be worth it.

Classify him how you like but he's producing an eye watering 2.4 ppg as a £7.6m defender or midfielder with lots of big hitting teams to be played in the next 3 weeks.

I have noticed that he hasn't scored well over the last few but I'm looking at potential points, not what he's scored in the last few games.

I don't have any attackers that I would upgrade and there aren't really any similarly prices defenders who I think offer much value so I'm holding on. I'm sure he'll get attacking returns soon and everyone who doesn't have him will be trying to discourage others from owning.

I don't really think those are particularly good reasons not to own Baines. You're basically telling me that assists aren't the only way to score points in FPL.

No-one is telling you who to buy and who not to buy. If you have some kind of evidence to suggest he's not worth owning, I look forward to hearing it.

    Is it worth getting Ruddy?
    Have Mignolet and Hart...
Have had Hart since the start and he's only just started getting CS's but faces a run of games where I think he'll let a few in....and he's heavy on my budget (along with Baines but I'll leave that one until after NOR 🙂 )
Thinking he rotates well with Mignolet but will probably only play him once in the next 4 weeks....
In short...anyone think Ruddy will shoot up in price this week and over the next 4 GW's....?

£0.3m in the bank and Fellaini suspended. Not selling him so will have to play both of Jarvis and Taarabt if I don't buy a midfielder.

Leaning towards Pilkington as I had him last year (good returns in a purple patch), he's rounding into form and his fixtures are good until Xmas.

Will add Gardner or McAnuff next week with the DGW in mind but who is the best choice for this week?

Ruiz out for 'atleast' three weeks.

Is it just me or is that really a huge blow to Berbatov? It also means that Petric comes in to the side which would make Berbatov playing the #10 role rather than the #9. Thoughts?

It's a good point. I'll be watching carefully this week to see what happens. The axe is falling on many of my squad members.

I think he plays better with a striker ahead of him, but not doubt Ruiz is a creative force.

Petric is not bad, he started really well but got injured and ever since he's come back he's got limited gametime due to Berba, Ruiz and in a way Rodallega did their part. Petric is even worth a punt for a couple of weeks if you can't afford Berba. Fulham will score.

1 assist? How about consistent clean sheets, 2 coming against Arsenal and Man Utd. He is the most nailed on bar Ruddy.

I don't intend on playing my Norwich defender every game. I'm buying one to catch the rise and potentially have a bargain.

Utd need to look at their defensive shambles and take a lesson or two from Norwich
on how to turn it around.

      CS's against Arsenal & Utd don't lie.

The reason I kept Baines is everyone said he has created most chances in the league. Problem is how they definte a 'chance' in stats? Seeing Baines play, he had some good crosses every games but actually not dangerous for opponent and the strikers hardly convert them to goals.

Yup. But you would bank on him to score like has has done over the past year or 2. and he has to average out the last few weeks. Im being patient with him for another 2-3 weeks atleast.

I think Jelavic on form is good news for baines and vice versa.

well said. You can 'create' a million chances in a game, but if they are not converted what effing good is that?

If Everton have kept cleanies , he was worth the money.
But they never look like keeping one , he has to go , that extra money can do wonders.

You raise an interesting point regarding the difficulties of forecasting assists. I think chances created offers the most reliable indicator we have however and until we find something better, we just have to stock to that.

You can't say the stats are meaningless because you're seen Baines play (once? twice?) though.

    plan for transfer
this week – foster to mignolet
next week – baines and pienaar to silva and gariddo (4 point hit)

Then my team will be like that
    mignolet jussie
    gariddo cameron gorkks nelsen taylor
    mata bale silva michu sterling
    rvp giroud ba

    look good?
