Scout Picks

Scout Picks – Gameweek 18

We’re bracing ourselves for a flurry of fixtures over the next few days as the festive schedule serves up as many as four Gameweeks. With home ties on their respective agendas, City, Liverpool and Spurs provide our Scout Picks XI with two players apiece this weekend – here’s who we have for your consideration:

Jussi Jaaskelainen gets the nod between the sticks as West Ham prepare to welcome Everton to Upton Park. With the visitors devoid of the suspended Marouane Fellaini, Sam Allardyce’s side will be a little more confident of registering their second successive clean sheet after defying West Brom last time round. Jaaskelainen has already kept out his opponents on six occasions this term and is likely to have the comfort of save points to fall back on if he does concede.

Glen Johnson retains his spot in the Scout Picks on the back of his strong attacking displays. The Liverpool right-back has provided attacking returns in each of his last three and with visitors Fulham scoring once in their previous three on the road, the potential for points at both ends of the pitch looks prosperous as the Reds look to bounce back from last week’s home defeat against Villa.

A home clash with Reading earns City’s Matija Nastasic a call-up. Roberto Mancini’s side look strong candidates for a clean sheet – the Royals have failed to score in each of their last three road trips and, having started eight of the hosts’ last nine, Nastasic has offered a secure mid-price option at the back for the champions of late, as Joleon Lescott continues to look a peripheral figure.

Jan Vertonghen welcomes Stoke to the Lane on the back of his highest points return of the season. The Belgian supplemented his second clean sheet in the last three with a goal and maximum bonus last time round and with the Potters scoring twice in their previous four on the road, he could be set to continue his upturn in form.

With Roberto Mancini confirming his intentions to rotate over the festive period earlier today, our faith in City’s strike force has dampened further. Instead, we turn to David Silva as the champions prepare to wreak havoc on basement-dwellers Reading tomorrow. There’s no doubt the frontmen could rack up the points against a side that have conceded 13 times in their last four but Silva’s security of starts is a safer option – his recent 16 point home return against Villa highlights his offensive potential.

Theo Walcott’s move to the lone forward role against Reading last Monday earns him a Scout Picks place as Arsenal travel to Wigan. The Latics continue to struggle with injuries at the back and have shipped at least two goals in each of their last seven – with no Boxing Day fixture for Arsene Wenger’s side, rest and rotation is surely not a factor here.

Jason Puncheon is an enticing cut-price prospect as Southampton prepare for the visit of Sunderland. With Adam Lallana out injured, Puncheon’s contribution will be more vital than ever – he has two lots of double figure returns in his last five and is up against a side with one away clean sheet since the opening day of the season.

Fit and available after a brief hamstring absence, we welcome Gareth Bale back to the fold. There’s no doubt a home clash with Stoke is far from straightforward but prior to limping off against Fulham in Gameweek 15, Bale had notched in three back-to-back matches and seems to have picked up in goal threat this term under Andre Villas-Boas – he is just four goals short of equalling his tally for the entirety of last season.

With goals in each of his last four appearances, Robin Van Persie is an obvious choice. United travel to Swansea having scored at least three times in all but one of their last six on the road and with Michael Laudrup’s side conceding four to Norwich in their last home match, Van Persie looks to have the perfect chance to maintain his scoring form.

Demba Ba gets the nod as Newcastle prepare for the visit of QPR. While the visitors remain unbeaten under Harry Redknapp, they have, nevertheless, conceded in all but one of his four games in charge –Ba has scored in four of his last five at St James’ Park, in indication of his deadly form in front of the home faithful.

Our final forward is Luis Suarez. Granted, the Liverpool forward hasn’t been in the best of form in recent matches but is set to face a Fulham side that have shipped 18 goals in their travels already – the second worst away defence in the top-flight. With 10 goals and three assists to his name so far, Suarez’s owners will be anticipating returns tomorrow evening.

Nathaniel Clyne warms the bench ahead of Southampton’s home showdown with Sunderland. The raiding right-back has a couple of assists and two clean sheets in his last five and with doubts remaining over the availability of Steven Fletcher, Clyne’s owners will be confident of another strong showing this weekend.

A move to the role in “the hole” last week saw Adel Taarabt register his most impressive Fantasy returns of the season. Unbeaten in four under Harry Redknapp, QPR will be reliant on their Moroccan magician if they are to extend that record as they travel to Newcastle – priced at 5.6 in FPL, he’s a strong cut-price option heading into the weekend and is up against a backline with two clean sheets to their name all season.

Edin Dzeko gets the nod as City prepare to welcome Reading to the Etihad. As mentioned above, rest and rotation will be on the cards for Roberto Mancini’s side but with Mario Balotelli sidelined through illness, the Bosnian’s chances of game time are that little bit more enticing against the porous Royals backline – costing just 7.3 in FPL, his potential outweighs most other mid-price forwards this weekend. Even if he is handed a sub role, Dzeko has proven he needs little time to make an impact.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Ya I had Berba starting too, but now I'm more leaning towards Sterling. Fulham defense are slow as well, which could play to Sterling's advantage

Can anyone explain to me why I cant captain Luis Suarez this week in the Sky game....it is letting me captain any other player. But not Suarez. I had Suarez captain last week, but it wont let me anywhere near him this week. Whenever I select him as captain it dont want to know. I had this before with van Persie, but that was 2 games in a week so you couldnt change, however, I cant captain Suarez for Fulham. Anybody? :s

noone knows really, just think Rafa can't particularly afford to rotate his star man this season when he's just got the job, and Chelsea need to win games constantly to stay competitive for the title. Plus Mata just seems really involved with everything they do in the prem, more goals in him than Silva

Villa are a funny team they could well stifle Chelsea. Same with Stoke and Spurs.

Personally I think you are safer with City offensive player or a Utd striker. They are pretty much the safest bet for this gameweek.

Chelsea = Exhausted and Villa have tightened up defensively.
Bale = Back from injury against the most physical side in the league and one of the best defences in the league. Charlie Adam also wishes to end Bale's career and will do so at any opportune moment.

None of them looking essential to me this week.

I agree with you. I'm just concerned that if Chelsea do win by a few, everyone will benefit apart from myself. I might steer clear of Bale for this week at least, it's not the ideal game for him to come back to.

I'd prefer Chelsea to Spurs this week anyway but my issue would be that you could see someone like Mata rested. They have huge depth in midfield selection so can easily change around. I actually think the only nailed on way into their attack this week would be El Nino.

Looking at Aguero's game week history does not merit spending 11m in my opinion. Tevez has 6.4 points per game and Aguero has 3.9 points per game, and Aguero is 1.5m more expensive.

But he isn't a rotation risk. And City looked good last week. Both Silva and Aguero have had season starts with injuries while Aguero seemed to be prioritized for important CL games earlier in the season.

He's still class and I think his form will turn for the better.

Well Everton won't find it easy. They've not been potent of late with Felliani and they'll need to adjust...From Moyes today...

"I don't know if anybody can fill the void of Marouane. I think he's an individual player. I may have to alter the way we play a little bit without him, so we'll look at it and see if we can find the right solution. I don't think you work on something like that, but now that we know we've not got him, we've been on it. But I don't think you work without someone beforehand; there's no need and there's not the time to. When these things happen, you have to deal with it and find solutions and, I've got to say, it's not an easy one to find."

All in all, I preferred the punt on Jaaskelainen that go for someone like Cech.

get Yaya if you want someone who just might play 90 minutes every game, even through this crush of games.

    Bego
    Rafa Enrique Nelsen
    Caz Silva Bale Taarabt
    Ba RVP Berba

    Sterling Cuellar Shorey

No frees. Rafa inured foreseeable future. Enrique is baby daddy. Hit for Rafa as there is a good chance both my defenders need to play? 0.4 in bank and Rafa sells for 6.3. Suggestions?

Evening all - Lost/ignored on last page

Real headache with what to do with Fellaini. Help appreciated!

    Option A – Enrique + Fellaini –> Nelsen + Silva (-4 pts)
Option B – Do nothing & save transfer
Option C – something cleverer that the Scout community comes up with

I like A but it would mean benching either Puncheon or Dempsey or Michu, all of which seem crazy

Well option B would be the best but it all depends what your team is looking like. i'm going holding on to Fellani cos I want to get bale for him, to do that I'd need to take hits so gonna wait til next week.

It all depends on what you have left behind to play.

Enrique will prob play this week so any hit involving him out doesn't make sense to me anyway...

Already used my only FT to boot Fellaini.

Worth a -4 to do Shorey to Clyne to avoid playing Davies or Shorey this GW? I was going to do this transfer on my WC anyway..

    Defence for this week:
    Foster (Begovic)
    Rafa Nastasic Cameron (Davies, Shorey)

hmm, might be worth it with those 2. I know you're in the UCL hunt in La Liga, but you play Boom Shakalaka who can win the title this week. If you don't care too much about that (you could still make Europa) then go for it. I think you will be up against it anyway, he looks very strong

My preview is on the Council site if you're interested.

I will have a look. Thanks for indicating, I had no idea I am up that high now. I have not seen UEFA H2H for a month as generally been pissed off with H2Hs this year.

Boom Shakalaka has it sown up irrespective of what I do. I will probably lose anyway given fact I have 5 players against Wigan or Reading this GW..

Same with me, I hadn't looked for ages either, then I remembered I'm on the council and needed to do a preview, so I looked at the table, and find myself locked in a relegation battle

Think I will just whack Davies as first sub for the GW and hope he gets more than Shorey. Clyne may have to get an assist to be worth it..

Plus already take -24pts in hits this season
