Watchlist

The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

As a result of Alex McLeish’s horrendously negative tactics last season, very few Villa players were taken seriously by Fantasy managers when crafting initial lineups this time round. Prices were subsequently downgraded and with the arrival of a more attack minded manager in Paul Lambert, plus the emergence of several young (and cheap) players, the Villains appeared to offer a rich seam of differential talent waiting to be mined. It’s taken a while for Lambert’s young lions to establish themselves this season, however, and as it stands that talent remains largely untapped; the acrobatic Brad Guzan in goal and the muscular Christian Benteke up front are the only players to accumulate more than a 3% FPL ownership to this point.

Four goals at Carrow Road in the Capital One cup and another three at Anfield has given us plenty of reason to take another look, and summer signing Benteke has been central to Villa’s resurgent run of form. In many ways, the Belgian is a symbol of the changes taking place at Villa Park – young, energetic and strong, the comparison with forlorn and fallen team-mate Darren Bent is striking. Benteke’s performance at Anfield displayed many of the qualities missing in the England international; he won aerial duels all over the pitch, scored a powerful goal from distance, set up another with a cheeky bit of skill and capped it off by barging his way into the box to execute a cool finish. If he was English, the media would have eaten it up.

We’ve already covered Benteke once this season, back in November he made significant strides: enough to promote him in our thoughts. He duly delivered three goals an assist and six bonus points since that article but, with a forthcoming schedule that screams further returns, Benteke warrants renewed attention.

Three home games in the next four against Tottenham, Wigan and Southampton should provide plenty of chances for Benteke to boost his burgeoning reputation further. While Villa’s form could now be fragile having just taken a pounding at Chelsea, Lambert is backing his side to show their spirit and bounce back in the Boxing Day meeting with Spurs. Considering that he has scored or assisted eight of Villa’s 13 league goals so far this term, Benteke will surely be the key figure on show against Andre Villas-Boas’ side and, with a price tag of 6.7 in the FPL and just 7.5 in the Sky Sports game, there are few obstacles to investment.

An ownership of just over 3%, with the ability to free up funds for heavy midfield acquisitions, promotes the appeal and could mean that Poirot isn’t the only Belgian that comforts us over Christmas; it’s not certain that Benteke will be murdering defences but he’s surely a prime suspect.

Be brave! I've done Baines as captain, risky, but thinking of ditching Baines after this week, so gonna give him the chance to prove me wrong. If all goes well, he could return big points, he is, after all, due a big return!

Did Fellaini → Nolan earlier. An unorthodox move, but I think he will score me more before the wildcard than the runner-up choice Pienaar. Even if he should get a yellow on the 29th! I might even be lucky and have Cuellar fill in with a point or two tomorrow.

Plan to get Nolan next week myself. Those fixtures look very tempting. His recent blanks have been due to some tough games which was expected & also because he was unlucky imo.

I did Nolan to Pienaar this week for a hit to hopefully get 11 players on the field tomorrow.

So since I got rid of him he probably will score soon after getting 13 points in his last 7 games.

I think if the Clippers have a good run this season Paul will be inclined to resign. They have a really deep squad there with a lot of quality.

Carmelo vs Bryant will be epic!! The commentators on the Clippers vs Kings games seemed to think that Paul would stay so im hoping he will. Bledsoe is good but not the finished article, Crawford is amazing.... youre right the squad is deep.

Houston are on today too, i like their style of play too, Harden is immense!!

Tough one that, hate taking hits myself. Who were u thinking of getting in for defence? Personally tho, would do Tevez to Berbs as you said yourself and then do Demel To Nastasic. Even tho its a hit, they are good long term moves. Berbs good fixtures to follow and Nas seems to be Mancini's preferred choice to partner Kompany

Yeh didn't know about that first sub you made. The question is whether Nas + Berbs+ Cuellar. will make more than a blank defender and your "11th player"

Nas +Berbs + Cuellar are -8, so they need to make at least 10 points to draw level with your blank defender and "11th player in this game week.

          I think they will, personally.

    Happy Christmas all.

A gift for any member if anyone wants it...here's some season ticker settings I use based on actual form of teams over the last 4-5 games, rather than the FFS defaults. Not sure if FFS actually updates the ticker team colours, but there's some glaring issues with the defaults.

    For example...

Norwich are only down as light red if you play them at home...they're the 2nd best form team in the division at home over the last 4.

Arsenal are down as red if you play them at home...their last 4 WDL at home is 2-1-1 (9th best in the league), hardly invincible.

Chelsea are down as red if you play them away...their away form WDL is 1-1-2 (12th best in the league), again this should be down as an easier tie.

Anyway, here it is if you want to use it. Use 'Import Rankings' in the Team Ticker area of the members section.

    {"ARS":{"Home":"1275","Away":"1050"},"AVL":{"Home":"1200","Away":"925"},"CHE":{"Home":"1050","Away":"1000"},"EVE":{"Home":"1125","Away":"1125"},"FUL":{"Home":"825","Away":"850"},"LIV":{"Home":"1150","Away":"1125"},"MCI":{"Home":"1425","Away":"1125"},"MUN":{"Home":"1425","Away":"1425"},"NEW":{"Home":"775","Away":"900"},"NOR":{"Home":"1125","Away":"1425"},"QPR":{"Home":"825","Away":"925"},"RDG":{"Home":"750","Away":"850"},"SOT":{"Home":"1050","Away":"1025"},"STO":{"Home":"1125","Away":"1275"},"SUN":{"Home":"1125","Away":"775"},"SWA":{"Home":"1325","Away":"900"},"TOT":{"Home":"950","Away":"1125"},"WBA":{"Home":"1250","Away":"1125"},"WHM":{"Home":"1050","Away":"850"},"WIG":{"Home":"950","Away":"775"}}

Not sure I understand your approach fully but I absolutely locve you thought process. I myself was wondering If the scouts update the ticker eg. Last year playing the swans and castle at home was a very hard fixture since Vorm and Simpson were pulling in the clean sheets. However this year they are very leaky so I wonder if this is taken into account. Also Stoke at home this year should be instant red I don't care who you are

Basically I rank all the points per game for home for each team over the last 4-5 games, and those teams with the highest PPG will be a harder fixture. Then I stretch the colour ramp to make sure there's at least 3 dark blue and 3 dark red teams (so even if all teams always won at home, there'd be 3 dark red and 3 dark blues).

        Do the same for away.

Which gives hopefully a better snapshot of team difficulty at the moment

How do people think United will rotate over this period with regards to Rooney and RVP? I own RVP and considering bringing in Rooney, and then there's the option of whether to captain them incase they start on the bench.

For tomorrow's game, are either of them expected to be on the bench or has there been no news? Thx

I think Rooney had a bad game v Swansea (opinion), so it'd make sense for Ferguson to give him a break midweek. However Rooney has a great record against Newcastle so both might play again. I'll still be captaining RVP

The general feeling is that Rooney will be rested after his performance v the Swans. Also take into consideration that both RVP & Rooney sit on 4 yellows & have to negotiate the next two games to avoid a 1 match ban,

I reckon Fergie will not play them together again until the New Year - Rooney to miss the next game, RVP the one after.....

    Good write-up.

I must admit I am certainly envious of Christian Benteke and his ability to not only outmuscle defenders with relative ease but also prove that he has a touch of class on the ball as well (e.g. the back-heel at Anfield). Without the obvious 'Ooh err' comments, big, strong, skillful black forwards are my favourite breed of footballer, with Stoke adopting many of them since Pulis took over a good 7-8 years ago. Obviously, not in the same mould as Benteke, but more recently, not far off, particularly Ricardo Fuller, more recently.

Benteke possesses the ability to turn a game in an instant and can pull something out of the bag from seemingly impossible positions. He's an excellent player in the air and, like Lukaku, is one of many talented Belgians taking the Premier League by storm this season. I'm thinking Mirallas, Fellaini, Kompany, Vertonghen and various others.

In fantasy terms, he's a player I haven't touched this season - primarily because my current front three has been penned in for a good 10 gameweeks at least now. Berbatov, Suarez and van Persie give me no reason to change, especially given the former's encouraging fixtures over the next 6 and the others' unarguable ability playing for better clubs than Villa. However, if he continues to put performances in like the one at Anfield, he'll be difficult to ignore over the next 6 gameweeks.

I like Benteke but playing for Villa does worry me somewhat.

They don't score a lot of goals and one does wonder what the 8-0 destruction by Chelsea may have done to their morale.

On the other hand, downgrading Suarez for him allows me to upgrade Morrison to Mata or Hazard and still keep Cazorla for Arsenal's gorgeous run of games from GW20 onwards.
