Scout Report – Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Alan Pardew made his second acquisition of the winter transfer window yesterday by snapping up Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier on a five-and-a-half-year contract. The centre-half moves to Tyneside for an undisclosed fee and follows fellow French international Mathieu Debuchy to the club this month as the Magpies look to bolster their bid for survival.

Having accrued a single point from their last five league games, Pardew’s side sit just two points ahead of the drop zone following last Saturday’s home defeat by Reading and are in real danger of being dragged into a relegation fight. With club skipper Fabricio Coloccini apparently keen to return to his native Argentina, the Newcastle boss has turned to the highly-rated 23-year-old to shore up his defence:

“We needed to strengthen the team and bringing in Mapou will give the whole squad a boost. He is precisely the sort of player we’ve been looking to bring to the club. He is a good age for us but has plenty of experience at club and international level. Mapou is a talented footballer, good in the air and on the ground and has all the attributes to succeed as a quality defender in the Premier League. He’s a good character too and that will be important for us over the next few months.”

The Statistics

Born in the Central African Republic, Yanga-Mbiwa moved to France as a youngster and joined the Montpellier youth set-up in 2005. As an 18-year-old, he made his debut towards the end of the 2006-07 and, quickly establishing himself as a regular in the heart of defence, helped his side gain promotion to Ligue 1 a couple of seasons later.

His leadership qualities saw Yanga-Mbiwa named skipper of the club and last term he captained Montpellier to their first ever Ligue 1 title, where they ended the campaign three points ahead of big-spending PSG. Over the course of seven seasons, Yanga-Mbiwa made 186 league appearances, scoring four times and providing three assists. Having featured five times for the France U21 side, he has since picked up three senior caps and was narrowly omitted from the final squad for last summer’s Euro 2012.

The Prospects

With reports once again surfacing this morning of Coloccini’s unrest, it’s looking more likely that Pardew will be without the Argentine by the time February comes around. The Magpies skipper has had an average season by his own high standards in a campaign also blighted by injury – a situation similar to that of Steven Taylor. Without the stability of his first-choice central defensive pairing at the back, Pardew has seen his side register just four clean sheets all season – a far cry from the resilient displays that kept our their opponents 15 times last term.

As a result, Pardew has mainly relied on Mike Williamson but with Taylor edging towards a return, Williamson – who has started 18 of the Magpies’ 23 league matches – could well be edged out the picture and revert to the role of squad player once again. Strong in the air, Yanga-Mbiwa reads the game well and is composed on the ball at the back – there seems little doubt he’s set to be installed in the heart of the back-four.

Faith in Newcastle’s Fantasy assets is understandably low right now, though. Pardew’s side started the campaign with two defeats in their opening 10 but, in a season which has seen many of their main men sidelined by injury, have since lost 10 of their last 13 matches – it’s little surprise the Newcastle boss has been linked with a handful of new players as he looks to quickly address his side’s dire form. Confidence may be dented at present but as the new acquisitions continue to arrive, we may once again find the Magpies offering us a source of mid-price Fantasy alternatives.

Likely to come in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Yanga-Mbiwa has a trip to fellow-strugglers Villa up next and while games against Chelsea and Tottenham dent his appeal, Newcastle then face a kind run of matches (SOT, swa, STO, wig) that look crucial to their prospects. While Pardew is clearly delighted with his new arrival, reports in the French suggest that Montpellier boss Rene Girard is set to leave the club this summer as a result of his annoyance over Yanga-Mbiwa’s sale – a show of appreciation over Newcastle’s new boy if ever there was one. His lack of attacking returns in France, however, suggest Yanga-Mbiwa is likely to be overshadowed by 5.0 priced Debuchy for goals and assist potential, though the stability he brings at the back could well boost his side’s appeal from a defensive perspective.

Having points on the bench is not a bad thing. Rotation is good if it increases your probability of gaining a cleansheet over playing one keeper constantly. If you are rotating 2 keepers and getting 6ish pts from the one you play it doesn't matter whether the benched one gets thrashed 8-0 or gets 5 pts from a bucketload of saves. It actually doesn't matter if they get a penalty save, clean sheet and bonus points - your playing keeper doesn't suddenly lose points. The only issue with this is value for money for instance if playing Mignolet gets you 4pts per week average and you can pair him with a 3.9 keeper that might be better value than 2 5ish keepers to rotate.

I'd rather have 20 points on my bench every week than 0 points on my bench every week.

A little frustrating, but I pick 15 players who can all score points, I just select the XI who I think will score the most in that particular week.

This is what I always think. Can't understand why people moan when their benched players score good points - it helps increase their value and means that they are "on form". And, at the end of the day, you chose who to play and who to bench.

I agree with a lot of what you just said, and with defenders, midfielder and forwards I would suggest that it is wise to not own any Danny Guthries. However, with keepers there really is no combo that could offer anywhere near high enough value to justify using a rotation pair rather than a 3.9 keeper.

Not sure where someone got Bale -98% from... from what I see he's on around -93% and pretty much no chance of dropping 0.1 in price, unfortunately.

Only 8 people have sold him so far today - about another 2,000 to go.

    Begovic (WIG)
Azpilicueta (rdg) - BDavies (sun) - Mertesacker (LIV)
Bale (nor) - Walcott (LIV) - Michu (sun) - Noble (ful)
RVP (SOU) - Suarez (ars) - Podolski (LIV)

    bank: 0.5
    1 FT

Noble + Podolski for a 4-point hit to:

    A. Pienaar + Benteke
    B. AJ + Benteke
    C. Walters + Fletcher
    D. Walters + Berbatov

Eurpoopa games aren't until 14th Feb though.

It looks unlikely that the same player will start both GW24, 30th Jan (rea) and GW25, 2nd Feb (new).

I'm hoping Torres plays 90 mins against Brentford so that Ba starts against reading and then I can wave bye-bye.

    Just my thoughts:

    Me: 2 + Nolan + Jussi
Cup opponent: Gibbs + Noble + Reid

Currently, leading on goals scored (thanks to Davies) and less number of goals conceded.

Assuming, West Ham players contribute the same to each team, need one of the following combinations:

    1. Gibbs rested.
    2. West Ham score.
    3. Arsenal CS + Gibbs yellow + 9 saves for Jussi.

    Hmmmmm.

So it's back to the talk of Aguero.

I understand we'll see City's lineup prior to the GW24 games, so anybody else having a Plan A and B, depending on whether he's starting?

If he does start, I'm thinking RVP Aguero Fletcher. If he isn't - RVP Fletcher Suarez, who will then become Sturridge for GW26.

He seems to be Mancini's preferred pick and scored 2 double digits prior to his injury. Looks to me like the ultimate differential as many teams will struggle to squeeze him in once the WC period is over.

wow filter keepers by PPG and factor out Ruddy as he's injured

    Bego 4.1 (current price 5.8)
    Lloris 4.1 (current price 5.9)
    Cech 4 (current price 6.4)
    Migs 4 (current price 5.3)

refects fairly well on Migs, essentially that 1 goal conceded but 6 saves every GW. Not bad if you got him at 5. Of course if you got Bego at 4.5 even better.

I'm an American and I've never been completely convinced by Howard. Good shotstopper and that's about where it ends for me. Everton haven't been keeping CS this year, until the last 2 weeks. I might think about Distin if you are convinced their recent form will continue.

Everton traditionally have a strong second half, but then again they traditionally have a poor first half (which hasn't happened this season) so it will take a brave man to punt on Everton seeing their current form through to the end. They have consistently been tight at the back over the years though, and Howard has proved a decent punt in previous seasons.

I just think - if you are spending in the mid-5s for a GK - that perhaps Szczesny or Reina might be better bets for CS in the run-in. But I agree Everton tend t come strong in the second half and Everton's failure to keep CS has been curious so far.

I like it except for Guthrie. Find a budget mid who plays regularly for those GWs when one of your attacking players is unexpectedly dropped. If you are out of money you might think abut either Reina or Szczesny as your full-time GK as Arsenal and Liverpool will probably keep about as many CS as Chelsea in the final 14-15 games.

He's started recently with nothing to show for it. I could see him dropped as he was after his poor start to the season. He is cheap, so if that's what your budget requires, he's your man.
