The Numbers Game – Budget Midfielders

Starting the season priced at just 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Raheem Sterling quickly cemented his place in many a five man midfield thanks to a consistency of game time under new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers. Handed a first-team chance in Gameweek 2, the winger rose steadily in price to 5.7 as the bandwagon showed little sign of slowing down but a run of 16 consecutive starts was brought to an end in Gameweek 18, with Rodgers citing signs of fatigue in the youngster’s play:

With the arrival of Daniel Sturridge added to Fabio Borini’s return from injury, the attacking options are increasing for the Merseysiders – having started just three of the last six, Sterling’s owners are starting to get twitchy. He’s now dropped in price to 5.5 but, with a 17% ownership, remains the most popular sub 6.0 midfield option in the FPL game at present. As winter wildcards continue to be flourished, we take a look at the upcoming six Gameweeks and, in accordance with our Rate My Team projections, analyse the likely protagonists for those Fantasy managers eyeing up a potential transfer out…

    On a wildcard right now, this team look ready to go?

    de Gea - Bunn
    Bertrand, Zabaleta, Cameron - Davies, Harte
    Mata, Walcott, Michu, Fellaini - Marveaux
    Van Persie, Podolski, Sturridge

    2.0 in the bank.

        Agree pod not in WC......the rest is a personal choice.

        Maybe Guthrie for Marveaux? Save the cash.

    Bego – Bunn
    A.Cole – Gibbs – Davies – Demel – Gunter
    Mata – Walcott – Michu – Fellaini – Puncheon
    RVP – Suarez – Lambert

    Decided on using my ft to do Lambert -> Fletcher as he is in good form and has good fixtures to complement his form leaving me with 1.5m to play with.

    Should I take a hit to do:
    A) A.Cole -> Baines
    B) A.Cole/Gibbs -> Evra
    C) A.Cole/Gibbs -> Zaba/Nasty
    D) Mid -> Bale
    E) No hit

      Lesson 1 I learned in this game. Don't drop a player after a points haul, regardless of opponent in next game.

      I wouldn't either. Swans with Vorm back could keep Sunderland out.

    Anyone of the same school of thought that Bertrand should get some serious minutes now Hazard is banned? 3.9 million bucks. What a steal that would be

    WCing GW25 but have this team in mind, pending a GW24 check on Southampton and QPR defensive form.

    Federici Boruc
    Zabaleta Evans Davies Clyne Onuoha (to Wilson when he returns in late-February)
    Mata Walcott Gerrard Fellaini Puncheon
    RVP Aguero Sturridge

    Reasonably solid?

        Cheers, knowing my luck zab and evans rotation will strike me out of nowhere!

        It's funny how quite a few of the punts have become so heavily backed they look 'template'. Aguero and Sturridge for a start. Have to keep remembering it's very early days for these bandwagons...

      Double Liverpool attack? Presumably you seen them continuing to thrive in attack sufficiently enough to justify having two attacking players from the team?

      I can't say I'm comfortable with two uber cheap goalies either, I know Fed will probably remain nailed on unless another attack of the jitters, but can we really be sure Boruc is? I'd much rather have a Mignolet and 3.9 myself, it's only 0.3 dearer...

      Everything else is as good as it gets...

        Yep I know Boruc is a risk given the information we have now because no one nailed the spot under Adkins. I would be banking on the new guy having a less schizophrenic attitude towards one of the most important positions in the team. I'm very keen to have two playing keepers who could in theory last the 13 GWs to the end of the season, hence haven't gone Bunn or a 3.9.

        Very tempted to save a little money somewhere and just go Begovic and Fed.

        I've stayed off Liverpool for the 3 awful fixtures out of 4 in January (I sold Suarez) after which the fixtures clear up of course. Just one really bad fixture right after the January wc (GW25) and then the only tough ones for the rest of the season are Spurs GW29, Chelsea GW34 and Everton GW2?36. Plus Gerrard is a points machine in big games.

            Great point about those games being at home... Gerrard will be a vital piece of the puzzle in those games...

            Duly noted...

    Repost:with additions.

    This is the first year I’ve gone on a bit of a cup run and I would love to keep it going. My opponent has an almost identical team. His defence is weaker and he has Gerrard to my Suarez and Ba to my Podolski. He hasn't made any subs yet. Was thinking I might do Pod to Ba as a 1 week punt anyway. Would this make sense? Any suggestions?

      Basically if I do Pod to Ba it would come down to suarez vs gerrard and my defence vs his (assuming we both captain RVP).

    Would you care for any of these players (yes they are United but I have RVP...spits)...........

    De Gea
    Smalling
    Cleverley
    Carrick

    I may have a bit to play with at the back and if I go 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 with Aguero, I would only have enough for say a Carrick/Cleverley....AND....I don't feel comfortable enough with only one Rag ahead of their upcoming fixtures.

    I think Cleverley could be a great punt personally here for this run of the Rag scum
