Watchlist

The Watchlist – Ian Harte

When Reading clinched promotion to the Premier League last season, Ian Harte was immediately pencilled in by many Fantasy managers as a cut-price defensive option for the following campaign. With set-pieces and spot-kicks in his locker, the veteran’s four goals and eight assists from 32 appearances last time out were indicative of his potential for the Royals but Nicky Shorey’s return to the Madejski quickly scuppered the best-laid plans.

Despite starting the opening three Gameweeks of the season, Harte was shifted to the bench in favour of Shorey after back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Chelsea and Tottenham prompted Brian McDermott into a defensive re-think. As the season progressed, Shorey looked nailed-on and, handed a share of free-kicks and corners, afforded us the Reading budget option Harte was supposed to have been.

Come Gameweek 18, though, McDermott’s tinkering brought Harte back into the equation. Having shipped nine goals in their previous two home games, the Reading boss shifted from a 4-4-2 to a 4-4-1-1 and this time it was Shorey’s turn to slip out the picture – a narrow 1-0 loss at City was followed by back-to-back clean sheets at the Madejski as McDermott’s decision to tighten up paid off handsomely.

Back on set-pieces once again, Harte also supplied an assist against Spurs and has averaged four points per game since his return to first-team action – with his appeal also supplemented by a 3.8 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag, the left-back once again enters our thoughts ahead of a run of three crucial home games in the next four.

While the upcoming visit of Chelsea is likely to deter most, McDermott’s side then play host to Sunderland and Wigan in the following three in addition to a trip to Stoke. With three wins in their last four, including a couple of comeback triumphs against West Brom and Newcastle, Reading have suddenly found their form and shown a fighting spirit that has defied the many doubters who had already consigned them to next season’s Championship.

Now just a point from safety, these next few matches will be crucial to their hopes of survival and will be earmarked by McDermott as a definite source of points – the schedule is set to turn nasty around Gameweek 28, with trips to Everton, United and Arsenal highlighting the task at hand. Although Harte was omitted from Saturday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United – with Shorey returning to the side once again – like fellow Royals budget option, Alex Pearce, it’s thought that this was simply a cup rotation tactic in light of two league games within the next week.

Fantasy managers can sit back and watch for the teamsheet against Chelsea: should Harte be re-installed in the starting line-up for Wednesday’s clash, he could be primed to finally vindicate that collective show of faith he initially received last summer and looks a definite cut-price prospect for our backlines over the short-term, at the very least.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Why are people opting for Aguero over Dzeko? Just curious.

Dzeko looks to be a classic FPL points hogger to finish off all the awesome work being done behind him. No?

Can't tell if he's nailed though. Aguero's Mancini's favorite as we all know. If Dzeko could nail down that spot, I'd be very happy to keep him.

Potential - agreed. But getting a bit worried about his "security of starts" after reading the City forum. They seem to think it's Aguero or Tevez behind Dzeko at the mo

More nailed on I guess. Tevez and Aguero may well be the first choice strikeforce. Or possibly Aguero and Dzeko. But not Dzeko and Tevez with Aguero on the bench. Therefore Aguero is the most nailed on.

how much "more nailed on" though? worth the extra dosh?

city fans all seem to reckon dzeko's city's number 1 striker at the moment. he's on cracking form - why would any manager drop such a player?

when kun was fit, it looked to me as if tevez fell out of favor.

I like going for the better players - Aguero looked very sharp against Stoke before he got injured..He's on pens - but can easily roll out afew 2 pointers in a row also..It's a toughie.

"The Expensive D" - RMT; (cause I can afford it, and not sold on Aguero...yet)

    Mignolet (3.9)
Baines | Evra | Zabaleta (Clyne | Harte)
Mata | Walcott | Silva | Michu (Puncheon)
    RVP | Sturridge | Fletcher

    0.0 in the bank
I find it well balanced, especially with Baines+Evra+Zab getting midfield'ish scoring/assist points.

Love it!!! I used to have a couple of extra teams, one was "namesakes" (the ferdinands, coles... west brom even had a cech in midfield to sort out the keeper!) the other "four-letter surnames only"... so I love this b-team. Don't have them this year though, that's what becoming a father does to you.......

    Price change projections:
    Risers: none
Fallers: Westwood. Hopefully this doesn't concern you.

If you want to see how the WC momentum is going, here's the most transferred in and out players today.

    Mata
    Silva
    Fletcher
    Davies
    Walcott
    Fellaini
    De Guzman
    Giroud
    Lennon
(Michu, Evra, Gerrard after him, having just risen)

    Out:
    Hazard
    Luiz
    Ba
    Defoe
    Bassong
    Cazorla
    Yaya

Big congrats. You destroyed coates in the air and hit pool down the flanks. Really played to your strengths and preyed upon their weaknesses. The pitch looked very small, is it actually or did you just pressure Pool very well? They were all sucked into the centre, no width until the subs when their comeback started.

Say both the drafts. I prefer the one without Rooney. Offers you a lot more squad flexibility.

Thinking of captaining Bale this GW for the Norwich game, hes got a good reputation against lesser sides away from home and i think he'd due. Opinions?

So since Liverpool and Swansea are both out of the FACup, can we assume they'll play a Dgw in wk 26 giving then both great Dgws??

Good point regarding Liverpool being knocked out - I thought the only chance of a DGW was if Liverpool won and then drew the next round?

As they're out, I'm thinking there will be no DGW.
