The Watchlist – Christian Benteke

He may have arrived on these shores as a relative unknown last summer but Premier League defences are now more than familiar with Christian Benteke. Standing six foot three, the young Belgian has battered and bullied many a backline into submission with a series of physical performances highlighting his suitability to England’s top-flight – on his broad shoulders, Villa’s chances of survival may well just depend.

It took him less than 20 minutes to announce himself to Fantasy managers. Sent on as a 71st minute sub in the Gameweek 4 home clash against Swansea, Benteke grabbed a goal in a 2-0 win, helping Paul Lambert’s side to their first win of the season. Since then, the former Genk player has started every league match for the midlanders and has played a part in 15 of the 22 goals Villa have scored since his debut – an incredible contribution, which has seen him rack up 11 goals and four assists thus far.

With spot-kick duties also in the bag, Benteke has made a mockery of his initial 6.5 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, with 16 bonus points also accrued, has returned 115 points over his 24 appearances – an average of 4.6 points per game. As the season reaches a critical stage for Lambert’s struggling side, Benteke’s displays alone can be immune from criticism; he has scored in two of his last three at home and notched in three of the last four on the road.

Luckily for the Villa faithful, the upcoming schedule smiles kindly on their side. Having slipped back into the drop zone in recent weeks, Lambert’s troops now face the bottom two in back-to-back Gameweeks, with a trip to Reading this weekend followed by a home clash with QPR. Following that, Benteke welcomes Liverpool to Villa Park – a side he registered two goals and an assist against back in mid-December – and with games against Stoke and Fulham also on his agenda in the next five, the potential for points is obvious.

Now up to 7.0 in FPL, and priced at 7.5 Sky Sports game, Benteke has been snapped up by over 25,000 FPL managers this week ahead of a Gameweek that has just six fixtures for us to consider. While Charles N’Zogbia has hinted at a return to his Wigan form in recent fixtures, the Frenchman’s lack of overall consistency has failed to persuade many to snap up his services – instead, it’s Benteke who looks the man most likely. Granted, he may be vying for our attentions with a series of similarly priced strikers such as Romelu Lukaku, Rickie Lambert, Steven Fletcher and Arouna Kone but, as he’s illustrated already, Benteke is more than ready for the battle.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

If I get no news on Kebe I will be left with a difficult decision.

    A) Benteke and Kebe

    B) Lukaku/Remy/Holt and a mid up to 6.0(Nzogbia) -4

    C) Benteke and a mid up to 5.5( really dont know) -4

    Thoughts?

Only worth it if you are prepared to gamble that the new defender will get a clean sheet (or a goal/assist, but this is even less likely), otherwise you are better off just scoring zero with a no show - losing the gamble will most likely give you negative points!

Been just reading up on the ideas about Bonus Points changes and such.

I think introducing a system by which bonus points were given to the best players over 4 categories could encourage a greater range of choices.

So, for example, let's say we have 4 categories of: Most attacking (3), Most creative (3), Most defensive (3), Most influential (3) - similar to the member's stats page. If a player earned the highest in two or more fields, then the 3 points in the other field move down to the next highest player. In the event of a draw on PPI, 2 each could be rewarded.

The PPI would have to be restructured slightly to accommodate for these areas, simply so wingers didn't always dominate the area of creativity/ influence, or defenders didn't always steal the points from the CDM. I'm on the fence about introducing a new CDM tab, by which a clean sheet rewards 2 points, rather than 1 for all midfielders. Would greatly increase the amount picking Lucas, Yaya, Mikel, Carrick, etc. who we all know are virtually pointless in the game at the moment.

    Thoughts?

Yea or that, just something that encourages the picking of non-attacking midfields. It restricts the game too much and adds to the whole template team problem. Should reward those willing to punt on players who excel in their position, i.e Carrick and Yaya for example.

I've said it before but all you need to with DMs is reclassify them as defenders and price them the same as the top priced defender for that team. Do the maths if you want but it works out fair. (Not 100% I'd class Yaya as a DM mind you)

I think generally people should not be given an incentive to pick the likes of Lucas. Mainly because they do the same thing every game so they are effectively consistently getting extra points every game for their contribution. So you end up having a situation where it's almost a no brainer to have Lucas for that consistent 4 points a week. And that just feels wrong. It's easier to do what Lucas does every week than score a goal in 5 matches in a row like Bale because that is job that is doable each week. Whereas a phenomenal scoring run is much harder to achieve because it takes an extraordinary level of skill.

Basically what I'm saying is that an attacking players consistency should be rewarded more than a CDM's as I believe a CDM generally does these things every week anyway (tackles. interceptions, lots of passes)

But at the moment CDM's cost 5 Mill ish and provide 2/3 pts per week. Bale cost 10 and provides 2-20 pts per week. I dont think a consistent 4pts would actually be a no brainer...

Yeah, but then you destroy the likes of Puncheon who offer a relatively consistent source of points and would take skill to notice at the start of the season.

No-one predicted that Puncheon might be an ideal 5th mid. But then you would easily be able to predict that Lucas is going to be a consistent fifth mid to score you extra points each week. So it eliminates the point of scouting for a cheaper creative player as the DM is getting you consistent bonus points each week for his contribution.

It takes the skill out of it if the no.1 thing is not predicting form/talent. Rewarding CDMs would make it so boring and predictable. It has to be all about FORM

Yes but the thing is, if we introduced a 2-point CS system, the CDM aren't going to be keeping clean sheets each week, yet with the failure of a CS, if they are the highest defending player, they could still earn bonus, which again won't happen all the time. I agree with Hutton that maybe a recovered ball system would be better, since CDM usually achieve a high number of cards. Hence it wouldn't be as much of a reward to consistency all the time. Some games they might make a heap of recovered balls, sometimes they'll get you a 2-pointer. Would all depend on the price. The like of Lampard and Yaya in the 10-10.5 mark simply for their domination and attack year in year out

As I've said though, the biggest differentiator each season is the form of the team or the form of an elite attacking player. It can vary a lot from season to season. A lot of fantasy football preparation comes from looking at the fixtures, judging form and predicting form to get ahead.

If you make it so CDMs are suddenly quite decent options to stick in each week it not only makes the game kind of boring (imo) but it means you are predicting stuff that is often a given (they will perform admirably as CDMs each week and receive balls, intercept, tackle etc all game)

But the fun of FPL is often predicting what we might not have all foreseen. I.e the rise of Fellaini/Puncheon/the extra gear of Bale/Cazorla's consistency over the season/Mata being better than Hazard over the season despite Hazard's strong start. These are kind of make or break situations whereas you can easily predict the best CDMs and their bonus points would be inevitable rather than earned by having an exceptional season that eclipsed the last.

Sorry about the long post. 😀

The thing that bemuses me about the bap arguments is how one minute people are arguing that the weighting is unfair and favours goalscorers and then the next minute you have other arguments about how a block shouldn't be given so much +ppi.

But where is the middle ground?

If you are not going to penalise strikers for shots off target, what do you penalise them for? And if you are not going to reward a defender's contribution for blocks/tackles/interceptions, what do you reward them for?

The fact of the matter is, choosing a MOTM is often highly subjective and that's why I'd imagine people got so angry about the old Baps system too.

I actually slightly disagree with Bap chap on the blocks issue. I understand that it might be a sign of a bad defender that he has to block shots constantly, but if he ends up keeping a clean sheet and he has 3/4 blocks, surely that is a great defensive contribution and worth of a highly positive ppi?

Fact of the matter is, if you complain about strikers being penalised for shots off target, then what do you do to lower their ppi in order for the bonus points system to reflect the overall game more accurately and reward the performance of a Scott Parker or a keeper who has played a blinder?

Another thing worth mentioning is that strikers might not be hugely involved in overall play but then they'll score in a counter attack and the game will end 1-0... people say this is unfair in the baps system because the striker did practically nothing all game but score and still get 3 baps...but does that matter? they scored and won the game, they did their job. A team has been rewarded with a 1-0 victory, I doubt their defensive mid goes home thinking 'God, I thought I really deserved baps today for that performance, I feel so robbed'. We all know there are unsung heroes, but this is fantasy football, it's hardly a representation of how we all feel about football in general. If we were all to choose the baps ourselves they'd all be different. The way they are now means it's based on something concrete, at least.

And one last thing, when people say it is unfair that goalscorers get more bonus points etc.

    Why??

We all pick the goalscorers/assisters on purpose! This is fantasy football, not 'let's all politely appreciate what everyone does on the pitch every week and get sympathy points' football. It's no accident that the EA sports weight goals/assists so highly for baps, if they didn't...we'd get these really confusing baps each week and there'd be points going to the Cattermoles that nobody has.

The fun of fantasy football is POINTS POINTS POINTS. There should be players no-one ever owns...it's better for the game that the points are directed to a smaller elite set of players.

The problem is not necessarily with bonus points but the fantasy scoring system in general.

Yes bonus points favor strikers/midfielders as goals/assists give large weightings. But for my mind the real issue is that you can gain multiple goals/assists in a game but not multiple clean sheets. So attacking players are always going to gain more points than defensive players.

I'd like to see FPL introduce recovered balls/blocks/tackles or some other defensive stat which would benefit defensive players. Couple this higher scoring with a price rice in defense across the board to make it harder to build template teams and therefore make the game more exciting.

        Thanks for replying.

You see, the problem I find with broadening the points system to reward defensive players is that you make it into a socialist-style system where things are rationed out in a fairer way.

While this seems like a moral thing that appeals to our sense of justice it also means that the elite players (as they are now) would find the likes of Cattermole and Lucas hot on their heels.

Now if you reward these CDMs and defenders more it means that the incentive to pick goalscorers/creative players is reduced significantly. Which for me is wrong. FPL should be mainly about predicting form and who the elite players will be before they become elite.

If you are picking the likes of Lucas/Cattermole and getting points for it you are predicting something that is already known as FACT. That they make a really positive contribution to the game without actually scoring/assisting etc.

But this is already set in stone. Whereas Fellaini being an elite attacker this year wasn't. Or Michu being the top scoring mid for a while being a major surprise. If you make it so DMs are valued highly then it's SO easy to predict. And there is practically no difference between Lucas and Mikel. They're just clones of each other.

re shots off target, it's not so much the fact that they are penalised, it's more that the system does not distinguish between the different types of shot off target.

There's a difference between say, Torres taking a shot which goes for a throw in, and Suarez who gets a shot off from a ridiculous angle having run past 3 defenders but which comes off the post. PPI will penalise these equally, but the striker who elects to pass to a teammate instead of taking a shot will not be penalised at all.

Also, the reason people say it's unfair for goalscorers to hoover up the baps is because goalscorers are already rewarded with points for their efforts. Giving them more points on top merely accentuates the fantasy appeal between goalscorers and other players, which reduces the effective pool of players to pick from. This is partly the reason why you get identikit teams, and teams which tend to be top heavy (i.e. more investment in players who play further up the park).

Sure, I can understand the frustration over this. And you make a good point, it isn't always a case of 'they blasted it 30 yards wide', hitting the post can sometimes be extremely unlucky.

However, for the ppi system to work efficiently it must reward and penalise players for SOMETHING substantial. If it's not shots off target for strikers then there isn't really much they CAN do wrong, is there? 😀

OK, so penalise shots off target based on how off target they are. Surely this is not beyond the wit of man to measure?

Going back to one of your other points, if you focus the game on elite players who score goals, you will get identikit teams. So Michu was a great pick at 6.5, but he's also a great pick at 8.0 when half the universe owns him. Same goes for Fellaini.

I think the game is more interesting when there is a wider pool of players who are viable picks. This would mean there are many ways of succeeding in the game without seeing the same old players time and again at the top of the points charts.

In the real world, a football team is not just comprised of goalscorers, and I think the FPL game should aim to emulate that by rewarding those other necessary components of a team such as DMs.

Oh, and I disagree about Lucas and Mikel. Have a look at Gerrard's statistics pre- and post Lucas' comeback. I don't see a similar effect when Mikel wasnt' playing.

I didn't mean Lucas and Mikel are actually the same player, I believe Lucas is better (for what it's worth). It's just I meant is there much different about them in FPL if you suddenly reward them bonus points each match? Is there much to separate them over a season?

While I agree with you that real life football is not this heavily biased towards goalscorers, this is FANTASY football. I appreciate real football stats and unsung players as much as the next guy. But I just think you get into muddy waters if you are going to try make FPL more and more like real football appreciation.

Ultimately, I think differentiation is the key thing. We all love to talk about value and we all love to predict the next big thing or the best cheap midfielder to have. And that is often done by studying the underlying stats and predicting form. If you make CDMs equally valuable in this game then a lot of that goes out the window. If the CDM is scoring relatively well consistently for things he will inevitably do every game then the incentive to search for a rough diamond decreases. Why bother if you can get consistent bonus points from your 5th mid CDM each week?

Shots off target is the one major flaw in my opinion. I think it would fairer if they didn't count at all in ppi. I'd rather my strikers were having attempts on goal but shots that don't even test the keeper shouldn't be coveted. Hitting the woodwork is possibly the exception.

I think the gist of the Bap Chap's previous post was that it's the errors in the current PA system which are the problem.... there are not the same level of errors in the OPTA, so if we just moved to a less error prone system it would reflect what actually happened in a game. On the other points no one will ever be 100%.

See what happens against Chelsea, he might be out to prove a point and win a place in the team, or he might've given up on united and is disinterested.

Not a straight up decision. But probably Nzog(6.0 available) if I get Remy or Lukaku up front.
But if I want Benteke than I only got 5.5 to work with.

This would be a 1 or 2 gw punt as I would want Maloney long term as my 5th mid.

Tevez -> Suarez, maybe Fellaini -> Sissoko for a hit.

I like the idea, but if i get Suarez I can't afford Rvp/Rooney next week, which is essential imo

                1.Tevez to Suarez
                2. Fell to siss
