Scout Notes

The Stock Check – Tuesday

Calamitous defending hands Swansea three points as Wigan slip to a defeat that seems likely to finally cost them their Premier League status. The five goals at the DW Stadium dwarf the efforts of City and West Brom at the Etihad, as the two managers shuffle their packs, much to the frustration of us Fantasy managers. Here’s the Stock Check from Tuesday’s pair of matches…

On the Up

Carlos Tevez
The Argentine had started the last seven prior to Saturday’s trip to Swansea, scoring three goals in that run. Dropped to the bench as Roberto Mancini went with Sergio Aguero in a 4-5-1, Tevez was recalled against West Brom tonight and fetched a smart fourteenth assist of the season for Edin Dzeko’s well taken first-half goal. While that was some reward for his frustrated owners over the double Gameweek, Tevez’s starting role against Reading and Norwich perhaps remains uncertain, although his prospects may well be improved should he be benched for the FA Cup final this weekend.

Angel Rangel
Selected on the Scout Picks bench, the Spaniard added to his clean sheet against City with a beautifully taken goal at the DW Stadium tonight – he is currently the top scoring defender in the Gameweek pre-bonus. Rangel has largely been a mainstay in the Swansea back four and, while his return of just one assist is hugely disappointing, he will remain a consideration for our squads next term should Michael Laudrup’s side be handed a kind opening schedule.

Pablo Hernandez
A brace of assists tonight took the Spanish playmaker to eight for the season and helped fill the void left by Michu’s absence with a hamstring injury. Like Rangel, Hernandez’s returns have perhaps dipped below expectations but he will be another worth monitoring: having settled in his first season in the Premier League, there is surely good things to come next term under Laudrup.

Going Down

Roberto Mancini
The City boss won few fans amongst the Fantasy fraternity after fielding a much-changed side that included eight tweaks with a completely different back four to the one that took on Swansea. With the FA Cup final beckoning at the weekend, we perhaps shouldn’t be too surprised to see changes although, having made significant investment in City over the double Gameweek, many will find it hard to swallow. City’s remaining two fixtures at least promise returns, presuming that Mancini recalls his big guns following the Wembley date.

Steve Clarke
Identified as a minor villain in our recent “This Much We Know” article, Clarke lived up to his billing to rival Mancini but juggling his assets for the trip to the Etihad. While we expected changes up front with Shane Long dropping to the bench, the absence of Ben Foster and Gareth McAuley were not anticipated.

Michel Vorm
Stretchered off on 85 minutes, the Dutch stopper looked in a bad way following a clash of heads with team-mate, Ben Davies. The latest reports stated that he was “up and about” post-match: it remains to be seen if Vorm sustained a degree of concussion which would make him a potential doubt for the weekend trip to Old Trafford.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'll put it on record that I wouldn't be opposed to David Moyes taking over. Who cares if he isn't a big name European manager, he's done an amazing job at Everton with hardly any resources. 26 years ago we signed a dour Scotsman and look where that got us.

I'm afraid it's a totally different ball game when it comes to managing title contenders and getting into that habit of winning. Be it in League 2 or the Premier League, winning titles is something else than ensuring an above average season.

No doubt, he's a good manager. If I give you the list of managers who you'd rather have over David Moyes, I'm sure you'd be able to get atleast 25 managers?

Where does stability come from? All boils down to performances and objectives.

If Sir Alex had failed to achieve his objectives in his early years, you wouldn't have seen stability.

Doesn't matter. Moyes has achieved loads. You can no longer measure achievements with trophies since there a fewer and fewer managers winning all the trophies. You could send Moyes up to Scotland and win some trophies, but it won't make him any more qualified. That's not to understate what Fergie did up there, it was incredible, but it's a totally different climate now. I can't imagine Fergie doing that at Aberdeen in 2013

Tom Brady, QB for the New England Patriots (and arguably one of the best players in NFL history) was picked up in the 6th round (out of 7 rounds) of the NFL draft, he didn't think he'd even make it at one point and for a guy that didn't have many good attributes he made a career for himself. It's a one in a million chance, i don't think Moyes will cut it when given those resources and that pressure.

I'm an Everton fan, and think Moyes has done an incredible job with us, but I'd have doubts about the appointment if I was a Utd fan. Will he be able to do it at a huge club with a huge budget? He may well be able to, but I'd be a bit concerned.

I'd love him to succeed though, would have no grudge whatsoever.

I wouldn't describe his job as "amazing'' personally, Everton have been stagnating between 10th and 5th place for 10 years now, he hasn't won anything which is something I'd look for in a new Utd manager! I think Laudrup would be a better pick, Moyes has spent money, Fellaini, Yobo, Beattie, Kroldrup, Yakubu, Bilyaletdinov, Heitinga and the list goes on, Moyes would ruin your great club from the inside I feel.

Everton went 3 years without buying a player. All loans or free transfers.

Of course Moyes has spent money, but in relative terms next to any number of other clubs, he's overachieved.

Your biggest worry isn't the next manager but forgetting about the old one...United went years and years with the Law Best and Charlton routine holding them back...same with my home town club with Tom Finney...The biggest hurdle will be not to create a "Golden Fergie era" that is set to undermine what has yet to come...

Problem with Moyes is that's he's a bottler. Whenever Everton get close to winning anything he uses negative tactics and they are beaten. FA Cup final v Chelsea, FA Cup semi v Liverpool are two prime examples. In fact, in every BIG game against Liverpool, he has completely bottled it.

His record in the transfer market also has to be questioned as when he did have a decent(ish) sum to spend when Lescott left, he wasted a fair chunk.

As far as saying Everton have overachieved, if you actually look at their budget on what they've spent on fees and wages, they are actually top 8 and have been over the years. He's achieved pretty much what he should have done.

I think it is time for Fergie to call it a day.

With each passing year it's becoming harder and harder to understand what he's saying in his pressers and after match interviews.

It's now reached a point where the majority of what he says is pure untranslatable mumble.

The current Arsenal shirt deal (Nike) is worth around £8m per year. The (rumoured) Puma deal would be worth £34m per year. 5 yrs £170m.

    Nasri, Hazard, Bale, Maloney, N’Zog
    Lukaku, RVP, Tevez

Sort yourself a good keeper, leave the rest alone. You should get an XI out and many will take hits to chase leagues.
