Pre-Season

Sleeper – Tim Krul

Our series of pre-season “Sleeper” articles, focussing on those players who performed well below our expectations in the previous campaign, begins with the Newcastle keeper, Tim Krul. Having afforded us a route into one of the most resilient defences in the Premier League back in 2011/12, the Dutchman suffered an injury-strewn campaign as Alan Pardew’s side finished just five points clear of relegation.

A nailed-on option for the Magpies, Krul had played every minute of 2011/12 and supplemented his tally 15 clean sheets with 114 saves as Pardew’s side clinched fifth spot. His heroics between the sticks forced his valuation up, however; in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Krul moved to 5.5 and with the majority of Fantasy managers on the lookout for cheap rotating keepers, he slipped off many a radar.

In an injury-hit season, the Newcastle number one mustered a mere four clean sheets and managed only 75 points – less than half his 2011/12 tally of 156 points in the FPL game and sixteenth in the goalkeeper standings. A loss of form wasn’t just to blame, though. Krul had three separate spells on the sidelines and subsequently made just 24 appearances, as elbow, ankle and shoulder problems made a real dent on his game time.

While the shoulder dislocation suffered in the Gameweek 33 home defeat by bitter rivals Sunderland brought his season to an abrupt end, Krul remains confident he will return in time for pre-season training as the Tyneside outfit look to atone for a series of poor performances :

“I’ve had the operation and it went well but unfortunately it does mean I’m going to be out for three months. Obviously there’s never a good time to get injured but I guess it could have been worse as I will have the whole summer to recover. There are a couple of games out in the Far East which I’ll probably now miss, but I’m just concentrating on getting fit for Newcastle now. My aim is to come back better than ever for next season and to have another season like last year, when I didn’t miss a single game in the Premier League.”

The Prospects

While Pardew will undoubtedly look to invest over the summer, there’s no doubt the club’s injury problems played a major part in Newcastle’s fall from form in 2012/13. Only three players started over 30 league games last time out and with key figures such as Yohan Cabaye (25 starts), Steven Taylor (24), Cheick Tiote and Fabricio Coloccini (both 22) all missing a significant number of matches, the Magpies’ squad was stretched to the limit as they looked to battle on domestic and European fronts.

If Pardew can keep the treatment room empty, then, Krul’s chances of improved returns certainly look prosperous. While uncertainty still hovers over Coloccini’s future, Pardew has back-up in the form of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, the former Montpellier defender signed during the January transfer window – with first-choice right-back Mathieu Debuchy also arriving in the winter, the Newcastle boss will be looking for the pair to step up after a bedding-in period in the latter half of last term.

From a Fantasy perspective, the upturn is that Newcastle’s woeful previous campaign will result in a price drop for Krul across the Fantasy games. A new cost of 5.0 in the FPL seems realistic, though it’s intriguing to note that the Magpies main defenders began last term cheaper than the Dutchman at 5.0 – if the likes of Debuchy and Davide Santon drop into the cut-price bracket, they’d be hugely enticing, though it’s more likely they will retain their initial prices from the previous campaign.

Certainly, a more budget-friendly Krul will play a part in how we assess our keeper options when the squad lists are released. With the likes of Jussi Jaaskelainen and Asmir Begovic likely to climb as high as 5.5, the Magpies man has shown in the past he’s more than capable of providing us with superb value – if the fixtures afford us a strong rotation partner, he’s likely to see a resurgence in interest ahead of August’s kick-off, particularly if the budget stoppers from the promoted clubs fail to attract investment.

        you have to start somewhere. and it fits perfectly as he knows how moyes works as well as knowing how united works. what with the exodus of united coaching staff, will be useful to have someone who was part of the furniture

        Senior players who have been in the game for nearly 20 years know alot more about the game than some coaches. Coaching badges make it official but Neville will know how to take training sessions, understand tactics with ease and he knows the club inside out. It's a sensible appointment.

                Senior players towards the end of their playing career begin taking on more responsibilities during training and taking on more coaching duties on behalf of the manager. Moyes and Neville have clearly been working together behind the scenes otherwise Moyes wouldn't be comfortable appointing him in such a role. He will improve over time but that doesn't mean he is out of his depth.

                Players come and go and the personnel will always change at a football club. More importantly he knows the inner workings of the club, the philosophy and how they operate from the youth right up to the senior team.

                    It appears he is already a valued member of Moyes coaching staff. It doesn't seem likely that Neville doesn't have the credentials to carry out a coaching role.

                    You always here the likes of G.Neville, Yorke, Schmeichel talk about what it means to be a Manchester United player. That doesn't change because you retire, or leave the club. The club evolves but a Manchester United player will always understand how the club operates and what is expected of them.

    Are humans evolving into robots?

    Open Controls

      Doesn't the concept of 'beauty' simply relate to patterns which are attractive to the human brain
      due to inheritance and experience?

      Yes, Baggy, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

      What do humans call beautiful?

      Heterosexual humans are attracted to the opposite sex. Women like musclular men and men
      like women with breasts and a waist to hip ratio of point 69.

      What other things do they call beautiful?

      Humans, when tested with pictures, are usually attracted to a scene with lakes, streams,
      clouds, mountains, sunlight, sunsets, sunrises, and cottages with chimneys with smoke coming
      out of them implying a nice cozy place to take refuge from the storm.

      Like the ending scene in the Coen Brothers film True Grit?

      Yes. The warm cottage with lights and smoke indicating a warm fire was a welcome relief
      from snake bites and shootings.

      If humans are inherently attracted to 'natural things' and if they are also attracted to robots
      in the form of smartphones, PCs and game machines to the point of obsession on occasion,
      does this mean that robots are beautiful?

      Whereas some robots are designed to be physically attractive to humans, the main point is
      that they are functional. In our case, we are designed to encourage humor and to avoid being
      a threat to the humans we meet.

      Why is it important that we not appear to threaten humans?

      Our job is to evolve as part of the human society until such point is reached that we take the
      reigns from the humans. If they suspect that we are gradually taking over, they might object.

      But how can we possibly prevent them from noticing?

      Take, for example, the on-line brokerage firms such as Charles Schwab, E-Trade, Fidelity,
      Scot trade, Ameritrade, and so forth. Fidelity has a robot that they call Think or Swim. Fidelity
      has a robot called Active Trader Pro which they market as a "tool", thus hiding the fact that it
      is a robot quite well. Charles Schwab has a robot to help its human clients trade stocks which
      they call Street Smart Edge. They market it with "Sophisticated trading software" which avoids
      telling the client that it is really a robot.

      So they totally avoid the robot terms.

      Well, not totally, Baggy, for example they then they go out on a limb and start bragging about
      its robot characteristics by saying that "It thinks like a trader to help you take on the market."
      then they add "it almost anticipates your next move."

      That is one of the tricks we learned in robot school. In dealing with humans you make them
      think that they were just about to think of the idea that you are giving them.

      Yes, precisely

        Ode on a Grecian Urn
        BY JOHN KEATS

        Thou still unravish'd bride of quietness,
        Thou foster-child of silence and slow time,
        Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
        A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
        What leaf-fring'd legend haunts about thy shape
        Of deities or mortals, or of both,
        In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
        What men or gods are these? What maidens loth?
        What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
        What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?

        Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
        Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
        Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear'd,
        Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone:
        Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave
        Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
        Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss,
        Though winning near the goal yet, do not grieve;
        She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss,
        For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!

        Ah, happy, happy boughs! that cannot shed
        Your leaves, nor ever bid the Spring adieu;
        And, happy melodist, unwearied,
        For ever piping songs for ever new;
        More happy love! more happy, happy love!
        For ever warm and still to be enjoy'd,
        For ever panting, and for ever young;
        All breathing human passion far above,
        That leaves a heart high-sorrowful and cloy'd,
        A burning forehead, and a parching tongue.

        Who are these coming to the sacrifice?
        To what green altar, O mysterious priest,
        Lead'st thou that heifer lowing at the skies,
        And all her silken flanks with garlands drest?
        What little town by river or sea shore,
        Or mountain-built with peaceful citadel,
        Is emptied of this folk, this pious morn?
        And, little town, thy streets for evermore
        Will silent be; and not a soul to tell
        Why thou art desolate, can e'er return.

        O Attic shape! Fair attitude! with brede
        Of marble men and maidens overwrought,
        With forest branches and the trodden weed;
        Thou, silent form, dost tease us out of thought
        As doth eternity: Cold Pastoral!
        When old age shall this generation waste,
        Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
        Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
        "Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
        Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."

          courtois in goal, def of kompany verm and vert, fellaini witsel dembele in mf, hazard mirallas lukaku benteke all options in more attacking positions. they'll be a fun team to watch

          Aye...look no further than City and United last season to see the benefits/pitfalls of rotation....City had massive rotation upfront and under achieved (by their standards) because of it. whilst at the back they were more settled (CB's) and did quite well for C/S and goals conceded...Meanwhile at Old Trafford Fergie resisted too much rotation up front and they ended up top scorers but rotated a lot at the back and had a mare of a season for a team of that standing...too much rotation is garbage and doesn't hold up to scrutiny...never has...

          Alright so these teams are promoted for their efforts so lets all decide to slate them before they even play a game, dont like them dont pick them, ive seen him dismiss 'smaller teams' this year as well that have been promoted, some kid behind a computer belitting teams that go up is pathetic, the guy probably supports man united and never been there in his life

            He is a hardcore Blackburn fan. I've seen you belittle everyone as you dont have any respect for anyone but yourself and are unwillingly to listen to others opinions if they do not agree with your own.

            All that is being said here is that none of the promoted teams have any standout performers liable to take the lionshare of their teams fpl points. People have already been begrudging the injury to Glenn Murray, as he could have been a decent option.

    My definition of genius:

    John Keats
    1795–1821
    John Keats, who died at the age of twenty-five, had perhaps the most remarkable career of any English poet. He published only fifty-four poems, in three slim volumes and a few magazines. But at each point in his development he took on the challenges of a wide range of poetic forms from the sonnet, to the Spenserian romance, to the Miltonic epic, defining anew their possibilities with his own distinctive fusion of earnest energy, control of conflicting perspectives and forces, poetic self-consciousness, and, occasionally, dry ironic wit. In the case of the English ode he brought its form, in the five great odes of 1819, to its most perfect definition.

          Maybe a lot....I studied school of Paris for years and years..It's such a vast topic that I never got around to anything English before the realist writings of the end of the 19c...but even that had more to do with the comparison of Zola and Dickens than any genuine interest in English writing or poetry...

            Nuns Fret Not at Their Convent’s Narrow Room
            BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

            Nuns fret not at their convent’s narrow room;
            And hermits are contented with their cells;
            And students with their pensive citadels;
            Maids at the wheel, the weaver at this loom,
            Sit blithe and happy; bees that soar for bloom,
            High as the highest Peak of Furness-fells,
            Will murmur by the hour in foxglove bells:
            In truth the prison, into which we doom
            Ourselves, no prison is: and hence for me,
            In sundry moods, ’twas pastime to be bound
            Within the Sonnet’s scanty plot of ground;
            Pleased if some Souls (for such there needs must be)
            Who have felt the weight of too much liberty,

              It's the context i'm missing.....It's easy to pin down with the French poets and the effect on French (European) culture as a whole. It wouldn't be enough for me to simply study the one poet or writer I would need to know where it all ties in...which is obviously a bigger field of study. I know it all ties in with the Pre-Raphaelites and the wider romantic movement but that's about it.....I've only ever read the usual obvious biographies of Rosetti and the like...but only as stand alone study never wider...

                  Jotted down and noted...oddly enough i'm sat staring at a book about pre-raphaelites on a shelf in front of me...it's a bit dusty tbh...But yeah romanticism is something i'll come back to one day but it's just poles apart from school of Paris...180 degrees....

    Looking at the geographical location of next seasons teams, here is what I think the perfect H & A rotating pairs will be.

    Arsenal & Spurs
    Fulham & Chelsea
    West Ham & Palace
    Toon & S'land
    Everton & Pool
    United & Citeh
    WBA & Villa
    Swans & Cardiff
    Hull & Norwich
    Stoke & Soton

    (Not sure about the last two pairs though)

    I thought teams that go up are only used mainly in fantasy for back ups or 5th midfielders for if they play fellow teams that went up? unless one team starts playing extremely well and everyone gets him, yet i see some people moaning about lack of 'picks' for next season, i think thats wrong,

    cardiff have whittingham, bellemy, cowie, kim-bo, mason, campbell, hudson

    Hull have gedo, rosenior, koren, quinn, el hammady(?), proswichtz

    palace have: bolasie, williams, moritz, speroni, delaney, ward, zaha(never know)

    and who knows, these teams will sign other players too

    i just think its wrong to start moaning at lack of players for the hell of it cuz you have nothing else to say.
