Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matthew Lowton

Snapped up from Sheffield United last summer, Matthew Lowton fitted the bill as part of Paul Lambert’s restructuring program at Aston Villa. Young, ambitious but with plenty yet to prove at the top level, the right-back arrived from Bramall Lane for a fee of around £3m and was immediately installed as a key component in Lambert’s first XI.

As the season unfolded, the defensive problems that plagued Lambert at Norwich continued to blight Villa’s backline. An attack-minded philosophy looked naïve at times as the midlands outfit found themselves on the wrong end of some serious goings-over – shipping five to City, four at home to Spurs and eight against Chelsea, Villa leaked 69 goals over the course of the campaign and managed five clean sheets all season, conceding in every match from Gameweek 17 onwards.

Key Factors

  • Few defenders, if any, afford the same consistency of starts as the Villa right-back. Lowton missed just one match all season – the Gameweek 37 loss at Chelsea – after being subbed off early in the previous league fixture and was fourth overall defender in terms of minutes played. Lambert’s faith in the former Blades man is unquestioned – if he’s fit, he should start every match for Villa.

  • After altering formation on a number of occasions last term, Lambert finally seems to have struck upon a 4-3-3 as his preferred option. As the Villa boss tinkered with his tactics in order to get the best out of his charges, he trialled three, four and five-man backlines with varying degrees of success – as he steels himself for a second season in charge, a greater degree of consistency looks key to Villa’s improvement under the Scot.

  • Villa’s form across the final few months of 2012/13 affords reason for optimism. The midlands side registered five wins and a couple of draws in their last 10 games, tasting defeat only to United, Chelsea and Liverpool and scoring 21 goals over that period – given that they had won five of their opening 28 matches, scoring 26 times, their improvement is marked.

  • Lowton also stepped as the season went on – he managed a single goal in the first 24 Gameweeks but followed that up with a goal and four assists in his final 13 appearances, with his penchant for a spectacular strike from distance always a threat. A 4-3-3 formation looks tailor-made for his talents – with a couple of defensive midfielder sitting deep, he should be afforded plenty licence to bomb forward and supply width from deep.

  • Let’s face it – Villa’s defence can barely get any worse. From a Fantasy perspective, then, a price rise for Lowton looks unlikely across the games – if he continues at last term’s initial 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has the potential to be a real bargain, providing Lambert can instill a little extra resilience at the back next time round.

Southampton are going to be a really interesting outfit next season, especially since the arrival of Pochettino. The way Southampton have set up against bigger sides(pressing in midfield) has allowed the Saints to steal possession and hit them on the counter, and not having to break down big teams when the Saints are in possession.

Results vs the big sides since Pochettino's Arrival:

Man United 2-1 Soton(best away performance at OT this season)
    Soton 3-1 Man City
    Soton 3-1 Liverpool
    Soton 2-1 Chelsea
    Spurs 1-0 Soton

    Results against weaker teams:

    Wigan 2-2 Soton
    Soton 1-2 QPR
    Norwich 0-0 Soton
    Soton 1-1 West Ham
    S'land 1-1 Soton

However, when Southampton have played against some of the weaker sides in the league they have failed to break down the opposition, especially when they have lots of possession. It is also intriguing to note that Southampton have conceded more goals on average against the big sides than they have against the weaker ones, this may be something to take into account when buying Saints defenders. The Southampton defence was also very poor last season, with no recognised centre-back pairing, Lovren's signing should bring some stability to the backline, as will Boruc if he maintains his place and doesn't do anything silly.

Overall Southampton under Pochettino have performed much better against the top sides than they have against those around them. This is mainly because the Saints have possession and have to break down two banks of four, rather than stealing it and hitting on the counter at speed with Rodriguez, Ramirez and Lallana.

Pochettino's side have also been linked with many European midfielders(Nainggolan, Banega) to try and combat this breaking down the opposition issue, it will be interesting to see if the Saints can pull yet another surprise signing to go alongside Ramirez & Lovren.

Yes but they were there last season and they didnt get many CS's. And personally I think that the holding mid is the most important position when it comes to keeping CS's in a counter atacking team.

Deserves a vote simply for effort.

Southampton went through a very lacklustre final 8 weeks and were closer to the drop than people think. I'm not too sure with Pochettino's motivational skills.
Do you have any insight into howhe likes to set up his team different to the way Adkins did? Ramirez was a huge disappointment after all the hype of his signing. Much of that might have been down to his injuries,

I read that before. It was his first 4 games where he has much to gain and little to lose. As the season went on the high line and pressing the ball became less and less apparent as they struggled to control games. In the end they went into their shell as they tried to eek out points. I'm sure they had a couple of nil-nils at the end.

I think that initial period showed the direction of travel he wants to take. The drop off in form might be attributed to player fatigue, since it takes a lot of energy and high fitness levels to play the high defensive line/high pressing game.

If they can have a decent pre-season and get their fitness levels to the required standard to play this type of tactics, and if they can get some new players in who are comfortable playing this way, then I can see them being quite successful next season.

I think the main difference between Pochettino and Adkins is the high work ethic involved in Pochettino's high pressing game and high defensive line, Pochettino attempt to win the ball back as quickly as possible, unlike Adkins who tried to absorb the pressure, to little success.

I can understand why the guys decided to change things around and stuff and initially I was impressed by those changes. But it has been to the detriment of the old banter and kind of fun chaos that made this place alright.

Okay. I'm clearing up some threads. Folks need to calm down a tad please. Banter is one thing but it's all getting a tad out of hand.

Re: moderation. The fact is, we had hardly any moderation before HC and now we have some. This is the way it has to be. Apologies if this appears to put some constraints on things but, in my view, with a community of our size and activity, some moderation was long overdue - things were getting too unruly at times and were becoming far too difficult for me to manage alone.

It will take time to find a balance and we're talking about a group of individuals who are trying to work to guidelines. Community management is a difficult task and this is a very active and lively place to start.

If you can mail me with examples of where you feel moderation has occurred unfairly then please let me know - this is much bigger help to me than criticising the guys who are going out of their way to help me with what is a very big and difficult task.

          This

Can it just be pointed out that a very brave decision has been made to launch HC when there is a lull in football related activity, specifically FPL.

Business as usual when the season starts and i'm being voted down for Joe Hart bashing. In the meantime sit tight.

Yep - I think that will be the case. In some ways this is the best and worst of times to launch this - folk are bored and therefore off topic discussion is inevitable and that makes moderation that much more difficult.

I like the idea of restructuring interesting threads. But don't see the need to remove raw data, surely let people choose the filter that suits them. Why can't no filter be an option for those who wish to ramble off topic etc.

The sticky thing is great if you haven't been on for a while.

Well if you allow all raw data to be listed where is the problem?

I'd of thought you should at the least operate on a complaints procedure i.e. only intervene when someone has complained, otherwise the banter point made earlier kicks in.

I love the sticky thing and when I want to quickly look at a couple of topics thats great, but sometimes you want to be open to random stuff, and frankly people behave less 'out of the box random' now.

I take on the point about teething problems of starting this ambitious HC system.

I just hope the results will leave all users with an approach that suits them.

    Back to FPL.

What do you think about the forgotten ones? Will they be signed or will they sit on the bench for another season?

Moses (played a bit part for Chelsea last season)

Sinclair (What a waste of a season)

Moses is more of a prospect then Sinclair - most of his points came from pens. Bent is the one to watch out for.

I think the rumours of Moses to rejoin with Martinez at Everton makes some sense. Chelsea know they dont need him, even more so now that Lampard and Terry loving Mourinho is in charge. (home grown player rule)

Sinclair will remain imo, someone needs to sit on that bench.

Sinclair will move on - he is a good player but not for a top 4 yeam.

Moses did play a decent role for Chelsea in late part of the season, but it will depend on Jose and who he brings in, but Moses may stay for another season.

Oh and on an FPL related note i sincerely hope Henrikh Mkhitaryans move to Liverpool goes through. Next seasons Michu for definite and I dont need to write a hulked essay if he signs get him in your team guys. He was sensational in a game vs ROI and i remember on the teamsheet when the mighty Derry City FC played FC Pyunik in a Euro qualifier. Fantasy beast for 2013/2014.

Classification and price is a guessing game. Id imagine midfielder. As for Aspas being more likely the new Michu in my opinion no. But its a game of opinions. Mkhitaryans statistics are crazy. I personally think he will get the Suarez role of playmaker / second striker in his absence and paired with Suarez if hes still there. If anything Coutinho will get the wing role. As for too many attacking players ill say quality over quantity any day and Mkhitaryan is pure quality guys. I hope the ink drys this week hes by far and away the most exciting FPL newcomer next year.

I think it's interesting, Coutinho considers LW a position he likes to play and he can play it well, whereas 'Heno' plays more centrally. He'd be a good addition and his pace could see him link up well with our other options.
