Scout Report – Leroy Fer

Norwich boss Chris Hughton dipped back into the summer transfer market on Saturday evening to acquire the services of midfielder Leroy Fer from Dutch club FC Twente. The 23-year-old, who arrives at Carrow Road on a four-year contract, is believed to have cost the Canaries around £7m and is the club’s sixth new signing over the close season as Hughton strengthens his squad in an attempt to improve upon last term’s eleventh place finish.

Fer – whose mooted move to Everton last winter was cancelled after he failed a medical – sailed through the Canaries assessment and will now join up with Hughton’s side once he receives international clearance. In an interview with the club’s official website, the Norwich boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

“We are really pleased to have acquired the signature of a player with the qualities that Leroy has. He’s a very versatile Dutch international and at 23 he has that pleasing balance of having acquired experience playing over 100 games in the Dutch League – but still having plenty of time ahead of him to continue his development as a player here with us at Norwich City.”

The History

A product of the Feyenoord youth academy, Fer was handed a first-team opportunity midway through the 2007-08 season as an 18-year-old. After establishing his place as a regular, he went on to play 103 times in the Eredivisie for the club, producing 14 goals and 12 assists, before he was picked up by FC Twente just prior to the closure of the 2011 summer transfer window in a deal believed to be around the €5m mark.

Fer then spent two full seasons at FC Twente and despite being utilised as a defensive midfielder, still managed to chip in with 13 goals and seven assists over 52 league appearances. In Europe, in particular, his contribution was key, with six goals and a pair of assists during Twente’s Europa League run last term. On the international stage, Fer has featured at every level from Under 17 to Under 21 a total of 50 times, finding the net on 10 occasions, including two goals in four appearances at this summer’s Euro Under 21 Championships. He has also represented the senior Dutch side on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Bouncer”, the six foot two Fer will add a real presence to the Norwich central midfield. While he’s versatile enough to play in “the hole” and has even featured as emergency right-back for Feyenoord, it’s a fair assumption that he’s been purchased as a defensive midfielder and should jump ahead of the likes of Bradley Johnson, Alex Tettey and Johnny Howson in the first-team pecking order.

While Norwich were defensively decent last term from a Fantasy perspective, with 10 clean sheets accrued, Hughton will still be looking to address a record which saw the Canaries concede 58 times in his first season at the helm. Fer’s physical attributes look tailor-made for the Premier League, with a decent disciplinary record of just eight yellow cards in the last three seasons suggesting he’s timely in the challenge, too.

Fer’s attacking output will also be key to his guaranteed game time. Bearing in mind that Johnson, Tettey and Howson managed a mere three strikes between them all season, Norwich certainly need to improve upon a measly 41 goals in 2012/13 – a tally only better than Stoke and QPR, with 34 and 30 respectively.

Yet to be added to either the Sky Sports game or the Sun Dream Team, Fer is expected to come in around the 5.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Despite a strong opening schedule which sees Hughton’s men host Everton, Southampton and Villa and travel to Hull in the opening five Gameweeks, the Dutchman is likely to struggle for our attention – with Robert Snodgrass priced at 6.5, the former Leeds man looks the obvious candidate in the Norwich midfield after registering 152 points last time out. Fer’s installation in Hughton’s starting XI could see him benefit from the new FPL bonus system, however, and should also bode well for their defensive resilience in the season ahead, making the Norwich backline options just that little bit more enticing.

This new baps system seems to favour midfielders. The 352 threatened to emerge last season, but now I think it will dominate the 343. The age of the strikers is over, the age of the midfielders has just begun...

There was analysis I read yesterday which showed the spread of baps last season IF the new baps system was in place. I remember defenders and mids taking the most.

i think the only reason the 3 5 2 looks so appealing is the lack of quality forwards and Van Persie is starting to look over priced. If Chelsea and Arsenal buy quality forwards the status quo will be restored . Benteke at Spurs is starting to look appealing

Surely if anythign his reputation is enhanced? He can beat people who take performance enhancers through his own natural ability.

If you are insinuating that it means he must be taking as-yet-undetected drugs, well that's just hugely cynical. As GO says, innocent until proven guilty

I've posted this off season, now more people is back, so I'll repost.

How do you rate Stekelenburg as Fulham's new goalie? At 5.0 he could be a great pick, if the Fulham defence play well. Though Schwarzer is old (and now at Cfc lol), Stekelenburg has a big name to follow:
With Fulham finishing "only" 10th last year, Schwarzer was the 6th best scoring goalie this season in terms of fantasy points. Only selected by 4.3% by the end of this years season, he finished the season as the best scoring GK, with 10 pts in GW38. Schwarzer saved 3 pens, more than any other last season, though he only received 2 bonus total.

If you look at his last 5 season in the PL, his average points score is 135.6 and his average ending price at 4.94. Impressive of a player turning 41 in october!

Just had to get him in. If we have no Chelsea DGW, i quite like this. Just need to shave off 0.5M.

    Boruc Mannone
    Zabaleta Alcaraz Turner Clyne Chester
    Bale Silva B.Arfa Snodgrass Thomas
    RVP Caroll Lambert

I love meself a good strikeforce.

Also, look at Rooney, 2 goals away at City and basically in the whole of the middle part of the season, (20+ gameweeks here from like GW10 to GW30 or so), the two players were evenly matched with Van P just edging it.

That to me does not suggest a 3.5M price difference.

Rooney still got 12 goals and 10 assists last year and he only played just over half a season.

People have short memories it seems.

I'll be interested in seeing what you make of this. Any constructive criticism appreciated.

    Boruc // Mannone

    Coleman // Rat // Turner // Turner // Chester

    Bale // Hazard // Walcott // Mirallas // Thomas

    Aguero // Aspas // Lambert

I'd rather upgrade Aspas to Sturridge by downgrading Walcott but I'm not convinced by any of the mid-price mids.

    Any thoughts?

Like everyone else I have been tinkering, and have come up with two team options (both not taking into account a possible DGW1)

    Option 1.
    Ruddy . Boruc
    Clyne . Saylor . Rat . Coleman . Nastasic
    Bale . Bellamy . Hazard . Mirallas . Snodgrass
Benteke (should he go to Spurs) . Rooney . Helenius

    Option 2.
    Ruddy . Boruc
    Turner . Saylor . Rat . Alcaraz . Nastasic
    Bale . Bellamy . Hazard . Walcott . Kagawa
    Benteke . Bony . Helenius

Which option do you guys prefer?

okay didnt want to bother u good folks with a rmt so far, figured u have enough of those around here these days.
But now im pretty satisfied with my team and i might even keep it till the start. just wanted some feedback.

    Boruc - Mannone

    Coleman - Clyne - Rat - Olsson - Chester

    Bale - Kagawa - Walcott - Hazard - Mirallas

    Lambert - Altidore - Aspas

Only thing i dont really like is altidore/aspas as i think one of them will surely flop, and it could be a nightmare deciding who to bench each week

With a Midfield like that i guess you play 3-5-2 every week? If so downgrade one of Alitdore/Aspas to super cheap striker and upgrade the other one. You will always be benching your 3rd striker.

    Aguero, Altidore, Gayle

    What do ya think??
