Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

    Draft at the moment:

    Boruc Foster
    Alcaraz Turner Amorebieta Chester Parr
    Hazard Bale Walcott Mirallas Thomas
    RvP J.Rod Cornelius

I have 0.5 spare. Question is should I spend it on upgrading Parr or Chester to a 4.5 or get rid of Cornelius. Is Cornelius going to be Cardiffs main striker? Cheers

I like this team. Use the 0.5 to upgrade Amorebieta, I'm expecting Fulham to leak goals now Schwarzer's not there to organise them and there's some nice 5.0 defenders around.

FPL should be basing their classification on recent history, not second guessing where they think players will play.

It should be automatic, if a player plays the majority of his games in a certain position the previous season, then that is where he should be classified.

He has played most of his life as an Attacking Midfielder, including almost most games when he was at Celta and certainly every game I saw of him when he was at Rayo Vallecano.

He spent - at best - half a season as a forward at Swansea, mainly due to their lack of options. Now Bony's arrived, he's unlikely to remain as a striker. Furthermore his move forwards was not particularly fruitful for him or his team. The fact that he is most comfortable in his Attacking Midfield role is something which has been mentioned by both player and manager.

Michu has excellent potential this season, coming in as a 9.0 Midfielder. Playing with a robust and powerful center forward like Bony should give him plenty of space to exploit. If Bony plays anything like he did in the Eredivisie, he'll certainly keep the opposition defence's attention away from Michu.

What's your strategy Chicrah? Rotating from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2 or sticking to just one or the other?

That should determine what you should do with Koren and Long. Countinho is slightly overpriced, do you have any others in mind?

The risk with attacking rotations is that you may have points left on the bench. How well does Long (who may be prone to rotation himself) rotate with Koren?

I feel Giroud will have a good season so keeping him may not be a bad idea, unless Arsenal sign a new striker. Is there anyway you can downgrade long to upgrade Countinho to Walcott?

Best 6M or cheaper midfielder? Mention two please 🙂

Thinking about these: Sissoko, Bellamy, Morrison, Wanyama, De Guzman, Pablo Hernandez, Thomas, Shelvey, Brady.

As said, please pick two out of these, or add your "own" player..

    Cheers!

Realistically what would you value Rooney at and what would you value Mata at ? Van Persie was £24m last year taking into account that it was the last year of his contract and he is older than Rooney is now. What is a realistic deal ?

I think 30-40M for Rooney and genuinely don't think Mata is much different. Chelsea are doing the poaching so offering 10M in cash as well seems fair to me.

25 and nothing more for Rooney he has 2 good years left and he is definitely on bigger wages than both mata and luiz. United are crazy to not accept if true, maybe they are scared they wont have time to get another striker in.

After 9 years service, I would be delighted with money back on Rooney if he wants to go - £28m or thereabouts?

Mata must be worth £30m? So in essence getting £38m for Rooney was a good offer.

The Mata deal isn't true, mourinho said this; The Mata bit is exceptionally heartening, as Jose clearly has a role in mind for him already. The Spanish media won't be thrilled to hear that, but it appears that Mata is Mou's "type".
With Mata, I need to get to know him better. I like sometimes to play with what I call 'wingers with the wrong foot' – right-footed men on the left and left-footed men on the right. He is the only left-footed player we have when we want to play with a winger on the right side, but the competition is hard.
He said that he wants to stay at chelsea.

They have a source, just not necessarily a reputable one:

        1009:
        FOOTBALL
The Daily Mail reports that Manchester United have rejected an offer from Chelsea for Wayne Rooney, thought to be £10m plus either Spanish midfielder Juan Mata or Brazilian defender David Luiz.

Even if your quotes are accurate he's unlikely to say Mata is surplus to requirements and that he doesn't rate him. The offer for Rooney is more of "I'd even be prepared to let Mata go to make the deal happen" scenario.

I just posted this on the last page!

The rest of the quote says...

"We will have Schurrle, De Bruyne, Mata, Oscar, Hazard and Moses for these three positions and so we have many more options than Chelsea had in the last year. These are crucial positions for me. I like these players to play with high intensity so to have five players for three positions is, I think, brilliant for me. It's fantastic."

Crucial positions needing High Intensity when that is not Mata's style so that may make him not Mou's type.I'm not saying you're wrong, just that these quotes can be taken any number of ways.
I dont want him to leave and he shouldn't, but i would pay 35m for Rooney happily 🙂

My thoughts from the other page.

People have a very short memories. His value to United over the years has been immense and he's won everything with us, included the title several times. Maybe he's just lost the buzz for the club he's had over the past years. Injuries haven't helped of course.

Imagine we sold Rooney to Chelsea and it took them to another level where they actually competed for the league. It's not even about whether Rooney is worth more than Mata in a transfer market. It's about how much value it adds to each club. Chelsea are lacking a striker more than United are lacking an AM.

        And another thing.

What if RVP got injured? Hernandez and Welbeck can play as a pair, but neither has the all round game to be a lone striker. Then we are looking at unproven players like Henriquez, Keane and Macheda.

Precisely, and why, if we want to sell Rooney, would we sell him to a rival Premier League club. If he wants to go we should offer him to Barcelona as bait for Cesc. Mata is a very similar player to Kagawa, so that's hardly improving the side either, is it?

OK, so do you think Arsenal were wrong to sell RVP to United? The focus should be to strengthen your own team instead of avoiding your opponents to strengthen theirs. Roonwy has done a lot for United and we respect that but its time he moves on and so do the club since he no longer wants to play for them.
