Scout Report – Diego Lugano

West Brom boss Steve Clarke made his third move of the summer transfer market late last week with the acquisition of Diego Lugano from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer. The 32-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a two-year contract and is the third signing of the close-season, after Nicolas Anelka penned a permanent deal and Goran Popov returned on another year-long loan.

Speaking to the club’s official website at the weekend, the Baggies Sporting and Technical director Richard Garlick admitted the Uruguayan has been on West Brom’s radar for quite some time:

“We identified central defence as one of the areas within the squad in which we wanted to increase competition this summer. Diego is a player we have been aware of for the past couple of years and when we discovered he wouldn’t be re-joining Malaga, we made our move. We have very much done our homework on Diego. His CV speaks for itself and we’ve also received glowing reports about him as a person. He had other attractive offers but we’re delighted he has agreed to join us. His game is very much suited for the Premier League.”

The History

Lugano’s career started back in 1998 with hometown club Atlético Libertad before he was snapped up by Uruguayan giants Nacional the following year. The centre-half failed to make an impact in his new surrounds and, with just 13 league appearances over the course of three campaigns, was farmed out on loan to Plaza Colonia – installed as skipper, he notched four times in 46 games.

Brazilian side Sao Paulo came calling in 2003 and Lugano soon established himself as a key figure at the back. Scoring eight times in 96 league games over three seasons, the Uruguayan’s most successful campaign was back in 2005, where he helped his side to a league title, a Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. A Brazilian title followed once again the following year, with Lugano voted the best defender in the division for two years in a row.

In the summer of 2006 Lugano was on the move again, with Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe shelling out €7.5m for his services. During his five-year tenure, he won the Turkish league twice and also picked up the domestic cup on a couple of occasions, while his attacking potential came to the fore again, with 22 goals and five assists from 125 league matches. He also proved to be something of a card magnet, though, and picked up 38 yellows and three reds over his time in Turkey.

A move to PSG in August 2011 proved to be somewhat disastrous for his career, though. Lugano made just 12 appearances (with seven bookings accrued) in his first season as a result of injuries and poor form and was farmed out on loan to Spanish side Malaga midway through last term, playing 10 times in La Liga before returning to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

On the international stage, Lugano has turned out for his country 85 times and found the net on nine occasions, with his most recent strike arriving in this summer’s Confederations Cup against Nigeria.

The Prospects

While the move has been hailed as a coup by some, Steve Clarke wasted little time in warning the new boy he faces a challenge to break into the Baggies first-team for the season ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Diego to the club. He’s an experienced centre-half who will increase competition in that area of the team. This is a tough league. You need as many good players in your squad as you can get – and Diego is undoubtedly one of those. Like some of the others we have here, Diego is another player who captains his country and is a leader. He has a real hunger and ambition to play and succeed in the Barclays Premier League and he will hopefully get a platform here to show everyone what he can do. However, Diego knows he’s got a fight on his hands to get into the team.”

Given that the World Cup is just a year away, Lugano clearly requires a consistency of game time after a miserable last couple of years. While Clarke had a tendency to rotate his attacking midfield and forward options, centre-half was the most secure of any position – both Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley were afforded 36 starts apiece in the new manager’s first year at the Hawthorns’ helm.

Further analysis of the Baggies defensive displays may afford Lugano hope, though. Having picked up four clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks of 2012/13, the midlands outfit registered only four more over the remainder of the campaign and managed to keep out their opponents once in 15 matches between Gameweeks 11-28.

Lugano’s arrival is likely to be a blow for Craig Dawson’s hopes of breaking into the Baggies’ first-team, with the 23-year-old already linked with a move to Bolton, having spent time on loan at the Reebok last term. Priced today at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the ideal scenario would be for Lugano to oust McAuley in the pecking order, given that the latter will set you back 5.5 to Olsson’s 5.0. Lugano has also been added to the Sky Sports game at 5.2 – cheaper than both McAuley and Olsson.

At the moment, though, his arrival merely poses questions for Fantasy managers and is likely to increase the appeal of Ben Foster as a Baggies backline option. The stopper looks assured of starts under Clarke and his rotation with Southampton’s Artur Boruc is already a popular option on the site, with a run of 11 strong home fixtures in the opening 12 Gameweeks (SOT, SUN, SWA, WHM, SUN, CPL, SWA, sto, FUL, CPL, HUL, AVL). Clarke’s selection policy will be one to watch, then, and if Lugano can cement a place in the first XI his attacking threat certainly looks prosperous, though his disciplinary record may persuade many to steer clear regardless.

    Cech (Davis)
    Kompany - Collins - Zabaleta (Brayford,Parr)
Zaha - Hazard - Mirallas - Cazorla (Koren)
    Lambert - Soldado - Benteke

That's it now, no more playing around unless some significant event occurs (Rooney out meaning Kagawa in). Man City points are so much more reliable at the back and not having RVP won't be detrimental until GW 6.

I think this is the right team at the moment, my only slight problem is that I'm effectively booking 2 weeks of transfers having Cech there, my transfer next week is arranged having Benteke in so I'm pretty much stuck with this team for the first month. Still, it's never easy is it?

I enjoy that Zaha pick, it is looking like he might play a bigger impact then most will expect this season - I'd go for a Chelsea defender over Kompany though (since you have Zabs and then you could downgrade Cech)

May I just say, that if Rooney goes to Chelski, it will be a disaster all round.

    1. For Lukaku, who will get less minutes.
    2. For Mourinho, who will have to sort out this unfit, unprofessional and immature player.
    3. For Chelski.
    4. For Rooney himself, who will have been NOT confronted with the boundary he needs.

and last, but not least ...

5 For the many people on here, who will persuade themselves to get him.

if Fellaini goes to MAN U as is reported he will be the most expensive midfielder at 8.5.

I'm not at all sure about that, Fellani's high price tag is based more on his attacking ability than his defensive midfield role. Utd have players such as Carrick who have nailed down DM duties as it stands.

    How does this look?

    Boruc
    M. Tuner - Collins - Clyne
    Hazard - Walcott - Snodgrass - Oscar
    RVP - Lukaku - Džeko

    Lewis - Pennant - Brayford - Parr

I started out with a much more balance squad, but over time all the money from defence has drained down into RVP - who I originally was definitely not intending to get.

I don't quite feel happy about the weak defence, but getting RVP started to feel unavoidable. Of course, there are some question marks over him as well.

I like this and have taken a similar approach. I do wonder about picking Dzeko and Lukaku as there is slight doubts on there nailed-on-ness. Have gone for Lukaku myself. Looks good though.

I would downgrade one midfielder (probably Oscar) to get Cole in defense and then swap Cole for Mertesacker or Touré and free up more cash to improve defense. But quite nice other than a light defense

I think top 10 is realistic.. anything less than that will be a poor season.

Challenging the top 6 would be nice, but I can't see us keeping up with Liverpool... maybe top 8 and a decent cup run (for once).

Lukaku is surely being picked as a GW1 punt and not a long term option. If Torres is in the Spain squad, Lukaku could easily get 90+ minutes against two terrible teams. Worth the risk for one week.

Not going to get RVP he is too expensive. Noone else from that team is worth touching. Can't see them finishing higher than third this season.

Manchester city have too much rotation and a new coach.

Arsenal I'm worried about but people say santiago cazorla and mikel arteta might get called up and also they have champions league qualification so I think they'll start bad and end strong.

Well, it's certainly different. Far too much spent on defence for my liking and I also think Dzeko and RVW are bad picks. I'd downgrade Luiz or Baines, maybe even heart too, and look to upgrade RVW to someone like Bony or Giroud.

I was hoping people would comment on the midfield and forwards rather than defence and GK. Am pretty set on using them. I read a statistical analysis of FF that suggested bolstering defence and keeper is better than midfield and attack due to price vs points haul differences.

Well I think you can justify 1 or 2 expensive defenders, but 3 of the most expensive along with the most expensive keeper is surely overkill. Cheap keepers often score very nearly as many points as the expensive ones and you are better off having a couple of cheap defenders who rotate in your third defensive spot.

But if you are really set on having them, the rest of your team looks decent. I still think Dzeko and RVW are very risky though. Maybe throw Lambert in there instead of RVW.

if your that set on a ott expensive defence then at least make sure they are all attacking as possible as u cannot solely rely on clean sheets. Especially when they're cheaper options with similar cs opportunities.

e.g. downgrade hart to 2x cheapies who will get more save points and get GJ or enrique for luiz imo.

I like your midfield pretty template but your strikers suffer and they are the main points making unit early on- ur gonna struggle with dzeko and his lack of minutes with ur below par bench

No, got my three Chelsea but not Mata or Hazard.

Not convinced by Giroud either I'm afraid.

In case anybody has missed it; Fulham's signing of Taarabt ruins Kacaniklic as an FPL prospect. Sad but true

He did quite well in the end and would have figured more this year. He would have been a good fith mid at 5.0

Theres a rule in place that only teams that were in the English league on a certain year (cannot remember what year) can compete in the competition and no new teams are allowed

Any thoughts on the Lukaku vs Lampard/Oscar for the double gameweek?

It seems to me the natural way to transfer Chelsea players out will be to one maybe two Man City players once its clearer what the starting City team will be.

Trying to transfer out Lukaku and Ivanovic in Gameweek 2 can go to
    A) Negredo + Coleman or
    B) Dzeko + Kompany

Trying to transfer out Oscar and Ivanovic in Gameweek 2 can go to
    A)Silva + Zabaleta
    B)Navas + Clichy

Which of these options do you think would be best?

I am personally more interested in Oscar and Ivanovic to Silva + Zab

I like the Lukaku option as I want Soldado and Coleman anyway. I just may stick with two though as I'm not sure i want someone who is not nailed just for one week only to have to transfer him out the next.

Man, you're already planning for a -4 hit in GW2? I don't know if I can justify that, hence I've currently not got Lukaku / Lampard / Oscar in my team.

Of the above, I'd pick Lukaku and then b) but I can't see Dzeko being guaranteed the gametime, especially if Aguero is back fit.

No I'm not planning a 4 point hit, these transfers will be done after GW2. Exactly my point, Dzeko may start the first two games but after that its a lottery

THE BEST 4.5 OPTION - ELLIOT GRANDIN

As I know many of us are keen to have a 4.5 mid who can potentially get the points when needed one player has caught my eye. As I was updating the spreadsheet (below) and how well he played at Blackpool was amazing, 6 goals, 6 bench apps with 3 goals and 2 assists. So I have put a few reasons to get him. (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6W3Px_oyV6-bXprWTJWMXlHYnc/edit?pli=1)

    1. He is actually a forward who is in the FPL as a midfielder. With Murray out he could well be OOP as a forward - always great news!

    2. Ian Holloway signed Elliot Grandin for Blackpool when he was there. He has now bought him again. There must be some fondness here at therefore assured starts even though they have had a little squabble in the past.

    3. He will fly under many peoples' radars. I bet he hasn't really been mentioned on here either (unless I missed a bandwagon last night)! Therefore not only a cheap option but a differential as well.

He is certainly in over Thomas in my team!

      Bandwagon alert!

Don't think he'll get the minutes - expect more attacking players in before the window closes.

I don't think we'll sign any more wingers this window because we have more than enough now, but definitely more forwards to come in (Bent, Chamakh, Bale 😉 ) so that could have an effect on Gayle

For me he's a no go. Although he may have a great past record, he will struggle to get regular appearances at Palace. He's not going to play as a striker because we've signed Dwight Gayle to be the forward and Dobbie will be in the hole. We've also signed an absurd number of wingers which means that he probably will not get regular starts (neither will Thomas tbh). I reckon the amount of rotation that will go on in the Palace midfield will be more than the front line of Man City. Just thought I should let you know before you get carried away 🙂

I have a really balanced squad that no doubt i will continue to tinker with until MatchDay,

    Migs,
    Zaba, Ivanovic, Mertesacker
    Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho, Snoddy,
    Lukaku, Dzeko, Giroud,

    Boruc, Shaw Turner, Colback,

OR i could do ZABA IVANO MERT and GIROUD to Collins, Baker, McNaughton and RVP....which completely ruins the balance..... added t this the fact that Utd just do not look good sadly in preseason and have a tricky start...

    A few Qs.

    - Is Sturridge going to be back for GW1, would he be a better pick than say Giroud or Dzeko who both also have excellent fixtures and better form? (I will probs get rid of Lukaku after GW2)
    - Is Coutinho worth the 9.0? I will onlz have one of Cout or Studge...
    - Do we still feel that there is good value in defence this year? I have seen a lot of teams recently with very cheap def compared to 2 weeks ago...
    - Snodgrass, Nolan or other similar priced mid? (Ideally penalty/set piece taker)

    Thx
