The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Built a team to avoid using my WC early and has worked out so far. Went Ivanovic to Coleman for next week. Need to find a way to use my 3.5 in the bank to improve Anelka. Ideas? Soldado? Save more money and get RVP?

    Mig, Boruc
    Zab, Coleman, Collins, Ward, Chester
    Silva, Hazard, Walcott, Jarvis, Mirallas
    Lambert, Sturridge, Anelka

        Thanks. I was impressed with Soldado's movement but not his service last week. He was lucky to be give the penalty. Better fixtures to follow looks promising.

    After a pretty strong GW so far I am now trying to decide whether to go all "knee-jerkery" or "stick to the plan".

    The plan= lukaku to Sturridge

    The knee jerk = lukaku to Aguero and Hazard to Nolan both of which have tasty fixtures. (-4 pts)

    What do you think guys? Knee Jerk or Plan?

      would always suggest stick to the plan but the knee-jerk looks good. Id be happy with the plan and if i was to go knee-jerk i would wait till the wednesday game in an ideal world but i guess with price rises your options are limited

      Personally, I still prefer Sturridge to Aguero. More nailed on, more likely to complete the 90 minutes, similar threat. He was really close to a monster haul week 1.

      Not a bad knee jerk really. Both new players will probably rise multiple times with another good performance and those fixtures suggest they will like you say. I say go for it. I am thinking of Lukaku>Sturridge -4 myself.

    Looking to transfer Hazard out for a few weeks. Who seem the best candidates?

    Walcott?
    Michu?
    HBA (likely not after today)?

    Who are others considering?

    Guess I should mention that I have Silva, Coutinho, and Mirallas already!

      I'm considering Taarabt, against my better judgement. It would allow me to Aguero in for Lukaku and complete my remix of last year's misery!

      But I'll probably just go Mirallas.

    Super Frank continues to deliver for me and strangely I keep transferring him out. In a short career of 2 seasons and 0.5 GW, here are his performance stats for me.

    2011-12

    3 GW
    4 Goals 2 Assists (for the Bolton hat-trick)

    2012-13

    2 GW
    3 Goals

    2013-14

    0.5 GW
    1 Goal (should have been more)

    Which one

    A)
    Lukaku -> Dzeko
    Benteke -> Sturridge

    Will leave me with Ivanovic, Coutinho, Dzeko, Sturridge

    or

    B)
    Lukaku -> Sturridge
    Coutinho -> Silva
    Ivanovic -> Zabaleta / Coleman

    Will leave me with Zaba, Silva, Benteke, Sturridge

    or

    C)
    Lukaku -> Dzeko
    Ivanovic -> Zaba (can be this week or GW 3, but preferably this one as City vs Cardiff)

    Will leave me with Zaba, Coutinho, Benteke, Dzeko

    Kinda nervous not having Sturridge.

        I dunno. WHU, FUL, avl, HUL in the next 4. The home games still look nice. West Ham were completely useless away from home last year. Fulham tend to draw blanks quite a bit. Hull does not exactly look prolific up front.

      Problem is, your six to play are against each other. That'll seriously limit your points. If you're hoping for Benteke to score, Ivan doesn't get his cleanie, etc. Breaking 100 will be tough.

    I really don't understand why people are shipping Hazard! He's a weapon and pivotal to Chelsea's scoring most of the time... at that price he's a bargain, yet one week without getting on the scorecard and he's out by the droves! Sell at your peril I say!

    “I trust Edin Dzeko. It was a pity he didn’t score because he had a lot of chances and he played very well. We knew with the ball that he’s a very good player but he played very well without the ball tonight. He had some important chances and he deserved to score today.
    “I spoke to him when I first arrived and I told him that he will do very well for us. I am sure we are now going to see the Edin Dzeko that City bought from Wolfsburg two years ago"

    Manuel Pellegrini

    So
    .........does this mean "Good Job Edin....I trust you to lead the line as our feature striker"
    or
    .........does this mean "Good Job Edin....I trust you will not whine when i start Negreado ahead of you as you continue your role as "Super Sub"?

    @ 7.5 There will not be a better barging in FPL. What scared me is that Dzeko was subbed for Negredo(not Aguero) around 80mins. Meaning Aguero more nailed on than Dzeko!

      It's a numbers game up front for City. They haven't spent the boatloads to bring in Negredo and Jovetic and Navas only to have them (or Aguero or Silva) sit on the bench. Rotation is inevitable, the best we can hope for is to catch them whenever they get a few games in a row, and always have a playable bench on hand.

            Aguero is building up his fitness so 90 mins was an ask, given that City spent the best part of £40m on Negredo and Jovetic means Dzeko playing 90 mins makes him less likely to start as Aguero needs minutes for fitness.

            Don't get me wrong Dzeko had a good game but it was a bit - should've, could've, didn't against a pitiful Newcastle team. If he'd missed those chances in a close game he'd be getting crucified now...

              All depends on how much you have to spend in attack & if you want RVP.

          Same here, will likely shift Toure for a 5.0/ 4.5 defender to facilitate it.

        Uh, yes he is champ.

        Anyone that joined after the GW1 won't be counted in the overall standings until next week.

        He is the last player listed in the current overall standings.

    Anybody understand how transfer bids work? I'm trying to figure how Arsenal's bid for Cabaye unsettled him. Arsenal would have submittted the bid to the team, not to Cabaye. Why did Newcastle not keep it under wraps until after the game?

      Because the story is a load of fetid dingo's kidneys. Like most transfer stories. Take no notice, he's been rumoured to be off all summer.

      Also, how worthless is a player who's so frazzled by another team wanting him that he can't play? That can't really be the reason he was left out today. I'm guessing he got excited when he heard about leaving Newcastle, was told the bid was being rejected, and then he told management to go f**k themselves. Or words to that effect.

        9.5 for is a lot for a dude with match at Old Trafford and then a blank. I'm also convincing myself that Lampard is better value, even though he likely won't play enough to be viable long term.

          Hazard is class, just as likely to score points against a big club as he is a smaller one IMO

      You crazy

      Just do Lukaku > Dzeko or any other single transfer that you like. If you picked Hazard last week his performance against Hull should not have you wanting to shift him out....
