The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

im thinking whittaker scoring was a one off thing and that he will struggle to keep his spot in that team.. but someones telling me to swap turner (norwich) for whittaker since im WC it. Turner is still a far option in my opinion.. what does everyone think?

Yeah, that mil really opens up my other transfer options. I was even considering Hazard to HBA for his hot run of fixtures and leaving 3 mil in the bank for a GW3 transfer!

Oscar has less competition in the CAM position, Hazard and Mata play there too, but will start on either wing. I think Oscar for value over the year, but who scores each week will be anyone's guess.

      I'd hold Oscar

Imo Oscars main strength is his versatility. That's why he also play so many games for brazil despite other talents. Scolari & Mourinho both realize that he can be used anywhere on the pitch. Most nailed on I feel.

I had originally planned on transferring Cech out with an early (probably after GW3) wildcard and picking up Mignolet. But with Mourinho looking like making an already good defensive unit even better, Mignolet rising in price while I have more important transfers to make, and a good rotation with Boruc, I might keep him for 10 weeks or so. I might even keep him for the season. What do you guys think? Is Cech too expensive for the long term, particularly with defenders much better priced than keepers this season?

i agree that chelsea look very strong defensively this year but that 1 mill you would save on migs or 2 mill you could save on boruc can go a long way to points elsewhere.

cech will probably be the highest scoring keeper.. but in my opinion id go migs who wont be far off at all

I also have Cech and Boruc at the moment. The plan was always to sell Cech in order to fund upgrades elsewhere, but I want to find the proper rotating partner for boruc. I can take my time, too... no need to take hits.
I like Boruc's fixtures, but I'd be wary about going for Boruc every game. I'm looking at westwood at sunderland.

I'm steering clear of West Brom completely. I don't trust that they can keep any clean sheets.
But I'm not sure about westwood either. The goalkeeper situation does not seem settled, and the manager is crazy.

Only if they rise 0.2. In which case you would gain a 0.1 profit. So in theory it could work for you but you won't gain much. Just make sure you still get players you want and sell players that might drop in price.

I think so. I never thought about it until a few weeks ago, but I think players cannot immediately be sold for .1 more after a .2 rise. I don't think you have to wait a week. There aren't many players you don't want who rise .2 inside a week though.

Thinking prices either (a) will not rise until after all GW1's games are played or (b) not until GW2 starts.

I wonder if it would make "the game" better or worse if FPL was more transparent about how prices rise and fall.

(Yes I know about FISO and totalfpl, etc.)

check FPL site, Coleman now valued at 5.1 and Barkley at 4.6. team values are still updating, so some teams reflect the higher value while others do not yet. it *just* happened.

    THINK THINK THINK

It is important not to be too reactive to what you have seen in week 1 - a lot of what you believed prior to this week is still very true!

Hazard is still a great player and can score points against everyone

City can demolish a bottom half 10 man team at home

Defenders wont get all the BAPS most weeks

    Newcastles fixtures are still great

    RVP can score against anyone

Mirallas is still a good option

Arsenal can still score big against anyone

    etc etc etc

Purely picking based on week 1 performance and results will not guarantee success so hold off on the "captain hindsight" style transfers!

Then stick by it absolutely. My plan was always Lukaku to Sturridge and and despite Hazard performance I am going that route and trusting Eden to come good.

Well of the 3 DGWers its quite reasonable to suggest that Hazard is the one to keep for United. At the moment Lukaku and Chelsea defenders are the ones that should be sold for the latest flavour of the week. Assuming of course that those players are in for the long term.

Hazard is going nowhere, he created 6 chances and apparently had a "bad" game. Can't wait to reap his returns from a good outing!

Newcastle fixtures are good, unfortunately, they are not.

Mirallas is going nowhere for me either, and that does no refer to his points haul. He should come good given those fixtures.

      Arsenal will score at Fulham.

Everyone knows City should be able to demolish a bottom 10 team at home. I, for one, questioned whether they would actually do so because of all the new players and lack of preseason for other players. Silva had hardly played with the team, and Aguero had not. It was less clear whether Dzeko was really first choice. It was (and is still) unclear exactly how good the defense will be. Now, Aguero is back and looks good, Dzeko looks first choice, Silva looks likely to play most of the time, and the defense is off to good start. I had hoped for a strong City showing. Having seen it, I'm transferring in a third City player.

As for the defenders, I think the first GW has shown that the high prices for many teams' best CBs is justified. They should be considered, though none should be transferred in at this point.

I guess I would lean towards Silva, just because I don't see any reason some combination of Negredo/Aguero/Jovetic couldn't start up top next week. Dzeko's upside is way higher though and he played well, so he should continue to start.

I would prefer Toure to Whittaker or Coleman. Liverpool should be in the top 3 this season for clean sheets, so 5.0 is an obvious underpricing. Everton will probably produce even fewer clean sheets this season than last, and both Whittaker and Coleman are unlikely to repeat their performances (particularly Whittaker).

I have switched out Ivan for Shaw, and Kos for Coleman for a 4 pt hit. Resisting (currently) another 4 for switching out Luk, but it just doesn't seem like he'll play more than 20 at Utd.

Think Coleman will do well but also rise greatly in price. Would have waited out the week with Kos, but it's not so much a potential price drop as it is that nearly the entire Arsenal back 5 (including DM) are out injured. Everyone but Mert, and he'll be playing Wed, as well. Arsenal, if they win the next few, will win through outscoring, because it doesn't bode well for them and clean sheets.
