The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Am an RVP owner but am curious to know what the affordable frontline of choice would be for those who don't have him.

I have Soldado, Dzeko, and Altidore. Altidore is a bit of a punt, but I didn't have enough for Giroud or Sturridge. Some combination of Soldado, Giroud, Dzeko, Aguero, and Sturridge is probably the way to go. I think RVP is essential in the long run, though. I'll be wildcarding to bring him in shortly.

Why Dzek to Soldado? Dzek played really well, was praised by Pelle, and Soldado was lucky to get a goal in a Spurs squad that really didn't look all that formidable in front of goal. And Dzek is so much cheaper.

Higher risk + Potential higher reward= Dzeko

19 goals away and 28 goals at home last season. Good enough for me. More importantly I feel that Bony could have a high goal involvement for Swansea. Their style seems to benefit the man up front (unless its Graham).

    Hi guys!

    My team:

    Mignolet Lewis

    Coleman M.Turner Mertesacker Chester B.Turner

    Walcott Hazard Coutinho Mirallas Ravel

    Soldado Dzeko Lukaku

    Bank: £2.5mil

Already made my free transfer before the price rise: Ivanovic->Coleman.

I am tempted to do Lukaku->Lambert (would keep him for his good fixtures) for a hit. Is it worth it or should I do something else?

none of them are "nailed on" to start. thus, its a bit of a crapshoot. ask yourself who has defenders that will often play ahead of them that are most likely to get injured if that's the choices you think are okay.

however, this is your WC now. you don't want to ever have to do another transfer again for a GK the rest of the season, except in January when you can play the January window wild card. (why don't you want to do another GK transfer: because it is a waste of a free transfer that could be used on players that score goals).

      that said:
      - Marshall is better coverage for Mignolet's bad GWs
      - Boruc is better cover if Mignolet is out injured for a stretch of games

How do Boruc and Migs rotate? If it's halfway decent, I'd go with Boruc. Southampton's defense should be the most improved this season.

Since you are on WC now, I would get a 4.0 keeper to partner with Migs. Play Migs all the way. Should be able to get around same points if not higher than your rotations.

People are saying Whittaker isn't nailed on, so you should be looking for alternative. But his price will rise..

Okay guys, here is an unfortunate(not really, but ive got myself stuck in a sticky situation) owner of 3chelsea players (cole,lukaku,hazard),1 villa player (bentekkers) and Kompany
    Nothing left in the bank

Who should be my priority to transfer out this week and why?
Im thinking lukaku to dzeko with a view of captaining him against a pretty helpless Cardiff defence

I have him and think he's a good one but it remains to be seen how much rotation will affect him and right now it seems that you need a few players who are really nailed on. Another injury this weekend and you have a real can of worms.

lukaku probably goes first as his value seems destined to go down. i'd love to tell you to wait until after Wednesday's game, but I'm not sure his price will hold through (it should, but I can't promise that).

kompany probably goes 2nd, not because his price will go down, but because you probably need another quality starter to replace him

(good explanation of price changes if you haven't seen it: http://www.fiso.co.uk/forum/crack-the-code-2013-14-the-fiso-guide-to-fpl-price-changes-t103498.html)

the rest can wait, and after GW2, you can think about whether you want to hold Bentenke and/or Hazard through the GW3 blank... Bentenke looks like a keeper right now

Thanks a lot for the help mate, well the issue with lukaku is that if i replace him, i need to get a striker of 8 million or below
I dont think i have any good captain options this week
If i replace lukaku i can get dzeko but thats a bit of a risk
If i replace bentekkers i can get sturridge who i think can easily get a couple past villa!

Kompany to Zab picks you up an extra .5 which means 8.5 and below

Giroud/Podolski are options (wait for Wednesday's Fenerbache game). Podolski looks like he will drop .1 this week.

Bony is possible though fixtures stink.

Lambert hanging at 7.5, nice fixtures

Aspas, Altidore, Van Wolfswinkle all at 7.0 - nice fixtures for all, more or less

            and nobody likes a

Crouch at 6.0... but he's playing Crystal Palace this week at home

I'm off to bed now... good luck to you

This is my team for gameweek 2....

    Migs (Davis)
Mert Toure Shaw Coleman (Baker)- Shaw came in for Ivan
    Coutinho Silva Hazard Mirallas (Colback)
    Giroud Dzeko (Lukaku)

Thinking ahead to my gameweek 3 transfer.... I should probably get rid of Lukaku, I have 3m to spend, who should I get?
    A) Sturridge
    B) Soldado
    C) Bony
    D) OTHER??

    Defenders BPS Stats:

I know it's kinda late/early but I couldn't sleep. So instead I created a custom stats table in the members area, that shows the key factors positively influencing defenders scores in the new BPS.
