The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Hazard to Silva and Lukaku to Sturridge seem sensible? need the 0.5.. and the bony bandwagon seems to have hit full flow.. shirley we gotta wait till tot and wba out of the way. he's not exactly proved himself with just 45 mins and europa midweek

      Hazard>Silva,
Lukaku>Dzeko, (as I have Coutinho, and not enough .5m short)

      I am planning on
      Dzeko>Sturridge,
      Coutinho>Oscar eventually

    Morning all,

I'm trying to consider which route is best to get RVP by GW4 and I've come up with these 2 options - would be interested to hear your views. Cheers

    ROUTE 1 - WC after GW3:
This was my initial strategy when picking my squad for the season:

    GW2: Lukaku -> Dzeko/Lambert
    GW3: Hazard -> Santi/Yaya
    GW4: Wildcard

ROUTE 2 - Downgrade over GW2 & GW3 (with a 4 point hit), and then get RVP in GW4, and save the WC:

    GW2: Hazard & Lukaku -> a 5.5m or below mid & Aguero (4 point hit)
    GW3: Terry -> Collins
    GW4: Aguero -> RVP

    CURRENT SQUAD
    Boruc, Davis
    Zabaleta, Terry, Toure, Chester, Ward
    Silva, Walcott, Hazard, Mirallas, Morrison
    Sturridge, Soldado, Lukaku

        Morning tina,

Yeah I'm fairly pleased with my team, hence the potential change of heart re wildcarding.

Aguero for the next 2 is mighty tempting also, especially if it engineers RVP come GW4

we have a lot of common players mate! entire back 7 is identical and 4/8 from attack... got Lambert/ benteke / kim / snod instead of mir, morrison, soldado, lukaku

I'm thinking Terry is the priority to lose this week... Lukaku still has potential.. I'm thinking Aguero is a decent enough pick to not warrant owning rvp, much better value at 11.0

Perhaps, although I think Terry has a much better chance of starting than Lukaku, especially if Lukaku starts against Villa. My bench is so tatty that I kind of need my first 11 to start if possible, plus Lukaku's replacement (Dzeko/Lambert/Aguero) should in theory have a far greater ceiling than Terry's replacement. RVP for GW4 is almost a must for me. He's so damn good and consistent. Nailed on captain.

I think I prefer the second option. You can always decide to wildcard anyway if necessary, and Aguero is probably safer/better than Dzeko for the next two, and a budget midfielder with good fixtures (maybe Jarvis?) could outscore 'azard over the next two.

Yeah, think I'm swaying that way too.

Rosicky/Jarvis/Cole/Noble/Dembele/Koren/Hoolahan look like the best options for a 5.5m fixtures wise. Would probably be relying on them starting most weeks given my bench though, so would ideally want them to be fairly nailed on. Rosicky is tempting for the next few given his role in the hole and probable starting place given all the injuries.

I like your team but I think you should retain the WC and carry on as usual with someone like Lambert coming in this week... downgrade a Chelsea player next week and take a hit to get RVP in GW4 by downgrading your last remaining Chelsea player and upgrading one of Soldado/Sturridge...

The only difference with this is that you would have to lose one of Soldado/Sturridge since I think a RVP Sturridge Soldado front 3 leaves your midfield too weak... and Lambert's next 7 home fixtures are amazing...

Also, with regards to the Route 2 option, it would have to be a 5.0m mid or lower this week in order to fit in RVP for GW4...

Yeah that's true, but there are way better options at 4.5... while there aren't that many viable 5.5 mids, that are worth having over any good 5.0m ones...

Probably blind, bias faith, but Rosicky is tempting me @ 5.5m. He should play in the hole for a few weeks more and I expect an Arsenal backlash at the w/e. Could be a great value short term punt.

Which 5.0m options do you fancy? None really appeal that much - maybe that Koren fella from Hull for the set pieces (if they get any)?

Hmmm, yeah that's an option for sure, although I'm thinking that Soldado and Sturridge could be medium term holds as both are the focal point of attacks for top 6 teams with great fixtures.

Also, to be able to get RVP via your suggested route I would need to generate circa 5m from the 2 other CHE downgrades, which would mean only 10.5m for Hazard's and Terry's replacements (so my 4th mid would still be fairly budget). Triple City for car, HUL is also a factor - they looked pretty damn good last night, and very attacking.

What I don't understand here is why, if you knew you were going to want RVP by GW4, you didn't just bite the bullet and go with him from the start?

You had unlimited transfers in the weeks leading up to the start of the season, so plenty of time to build a team with RVP in it using all the free transfers that were then at your disposal.

Now, by not having him in from the start, you have to either spend a WC early or take hits to do it in stages.

Was it really worth going without a proven fixture proof player for 3 weeks after all?

        Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

At the time of tinkering, there was merit in the option of allowing for greater balance throughout the squad with the omission of RVP.

If he had blanked, the guys who took the risk to go without him would be vindicated...

I'm not even sure the risk hasn't paid off. I have Giroud/Sturridge for 17.5 million, they returned me 14 points. I could have had RVP and Anelka for 19.5 million and gotten 14 points. Short term at least, going without RVP has worked out fine.

It has nothing to do with hindsight though and everything to do with logic and common sense really.

And none of the "well my alternatives to RVP did alright this GW" arguments justify not having him from the start because you are still now going to have to perform some level of surgery to get RVP into your team.

It's about compromise though, and ultimately points. Yes, RVP had a great first week, but it's the sacrifices required to have him over a period of tough fixtures that make it a valid argument to not have him. I still think Soldado & Sturridge will outscore Anelka (would have been my 3rd striker if going with RVP) & RVP over GWs 1-3, plus the extra 1m saved meant I could get both of the likes of Silva/Zabaleta, which I otherwise may not have been able to.

It's all opinions though, and points scored will ultimately decide whether or not it was worthwhile.

A 4pt hit should cover it...

IMO the risk of going without him for 3 weeks (with new manager and 3 difficult fixtures) for the upgrades elsewhere balances out with a hit...

            Time will tell...

My thinking was that RVP perhaps wouldn't score so well in his first 3 weeks (average preseason and tough fixtures), and by not having him I could capitalise on max CHE cover, and a pretty solid first 11. Not having RVP wasn't ideal this week, but I would have probably had him and Anelka instead of Sturridge & Soldado, so it actually turned out slightly in my favour to go without RVP. In addition I probably wouldn't have captained RVP in any of the first 3 GWs, which made the 14m price tag seem hefty.

Early WC strategy has its merits also. Capitalising on early bandwagons/price risers post all the transfers in the window.

Well for me it was about utilising the DGW transfer outs as much as possible. For instance I didn't know who the best budget mid was. So my plan is to sell Hazard for the best budget mid once we have a few games to go by.

      Lukaku> Remy for GW2

this would leave me with RVW, Soldado, and obiously Remy

I know Newcastle looked bad today but they played a top side with a new manager so Man City was motivated. Its a punt but I think Newcastle will bounce back with Ben Arfa, Cisse, and Remy.

The thing is, every time I've seen Navas play (mostly for Spain), he looks very good. But he hardly ever scores, and doesn't get an incredible number of assists either. Silva is better in fantasy.

Maybe we watched different games. I must admit that I was impressed by his movement. However I tend to think most of his crosses were not spot on and in many cases he lobbed the ball onto the top of the goalkeepers net.

some of his crosses were perfect.. maybe 3-4 out of 10 went wayward but he attempted so many. no way is he good for fpl but City got themselves a gr8 winger. gonna change the dimensions at city and make negredo/dzeko even better options due to their heading ability

I will agree to that but partially though. Some time back I had great optimism for Valencia after MUFC signed RVP. From a second half of good performances in FPL, he was made an out and out winger and I noticed that a large portion of his crosses were speculative. I was not surprised when Tony V. disappeared from the radar.

If you have players in teams with 18 Internationals and don't expect rotation, have another coffee, sober up and have another think.
A lot of people suddenly thinking the player they want is nailed on and the ones they don't want aren't.

Will he stay there when Carroll is back? I'd be tempted if he was.

    So who's getting Dzeko?

We might not have the luxury of waiting until after the Chelsea game to find a Lukaku replacement as he's already on -70%

I am thinking of getting Aguero for long term... But I really think Dzeko will outscore Aguero in the next game.. so i am confused

Got Dzeko already so considering Lambert. Dzeko is a decent choice though, albeit still a bit risky in terms of gametime.

Dzeko's benching after his 4 goals vs Wigan wayyyy back still hurts.

      Not for me.

        What about Negredo?

What hurts most is having no City cover 😕

Yeah no Citeh cover here either.

The thing is I held 1.5m back for Negredo...then he only gets 10min cameo.

And what worries me is he came on for Silva.

I think I'm risking the biscuit with Jecko...played full 90 and even stayed on longer than Aguero/Silva..

The thing is I can do Luk->Lambchops rather and then Benteke->Kun for gw 3.

              I prefer that I think.

Not that I disagree with getting Dzeko, I dunno if I agree with your reasoning. Aguero was building up fitness and was never going to complete the 90. And both he and Silva had already gotten their goal and with the game put away it may have just been Pellegrini protecting his two key players for future fixtures.

as much as i want to have man city striker for gw3, i'm still undecided to do the transfer as the main plan is to get rvp for gw4, playing at home against crystal palace..definitely a captain material for that gw..it become more difficult as i have benteke and soldado, which i want to keep, so if i get dzeko/aguero/negredo for gw3, it doesn't make sense to transfer them out for rvp for the next gw

I am getting Dzeko, my plan is Hazard+Lukaku>Silva+Dzeko,

then afterwards, when Dzeko died up/ ot of favour,

      COutinho>Oscar, Dzeko>Sturidge

I'm waiting until after the Aston Villa match regardless. He may drop but Totalfpl had Alberto going down last night and he didn't. I'm hopeful that they don't have the formula quite right yet.

Wasn't Lukaku a risk from GW1? Therefore you can take another one replacing him?

Soldado & Tekkers are 100% nailed on so roll the dice man, could come up trumps

    3. Silva managed three shots inside the box last night. This is particularly significant when you consider that he averaged 1.19 shots in the box per game last season. Interestingly, he didn't monopolise the chances created as he did last season, laying on only two of the 16 chances created by City.

Eat your heart out Tommy 😉

next week i have mcgregor and turner, & toure and benteke facing each other..anyone want to suggest who should i play?

at the moment i'm playing mcgregor and benteke, with turner and toure on the bench..but that will force me to play m.burner at home against rampant man city

Play Toure and Benteke. If Benteke doesn't get points, Toure will.
